Mariano sat on the church steps. He was fiddling with the emerald ring in his hand. He didn't even present Isabela with this ring. His Abuela insisted that the perfect Madrigal daughter needed her own ring. She was "too perfect for a hand me down." He wanted to propose to the love of his life with this ring because it was left to him in his mother's will.
"Hey, Mariano," Angelo said.
"Hola, Angelo," Mariano responded.
"Is that an engagement ring?" Angelo asked. "Moving onto the next Madrigal girl, are we? Are you sure you don't wanna wait until Mirabel is legal? We know you love bouncing from Madrigal cousin to Madrigal cousin. Esas Madrigals son unas putas."
"What did you say?" Mariano asked.
"Those Madrigal women are total whores," Angelo said. "They're practically treating you like a toy. They're passing you around. You're probably not gonna marry any of them. Just get passed from Pepa's side to Julieta's side. You're oblivious to it. What did you say? 'You just have so much love inside.'"
"I'm not bouncing from Madrigal woman to another," Mariano snapped. "And they're certainly not whores."
"Amigo, Dolores isn't here," Angelo explained. "She probably can't hear a thing you're saying. You don't have to lie to her. Why even bother with the marriage thing? We all know you've been sleeping with her since you were bothered to Isabela."
"I never slept with anyone," Mariano said. "I'm waiting for my wedding night. I don't know about Dolores, but what she did before we got together is her business. I never touched anyone when I was with Isabela."
"Sure," Angelo said with an eye roll. "I'm sure Isabela will be thrilled that you're now dating her cousin."
"She was the one who called of our engagement," Mariano said defensively. "She even set us up."
"Okay," Angelo chuckled. "Marry the town ramera. Don't come crying to me when she gets knocked up with some other guy's baby."
Mariano was often described as a gentle giant. He wrote poetry and was a hopeless romantic. When in conflict, he often went for a diplomatic approach. However, no one was going to disrespect his future wife.
Mariano ran his fist into Angelo's face. Angelo, after being stunned for a moment, quickly returned the favor. The two men were quickly on the ground, rolling around and exchanging blows. Only Luisa was able to separate them.
Dolores had been informed that they were going to the town. Since Isabela was now dead, he had to find someone else. He decided having a woman with him would be more helpful when picking people up. She didn't want to go along, but she didn't want to die before she could find out if Camilo was okay.
"Perra, sé una muñeca y tráeme el archivo de Rosa Gómez," the man said. They were in his room. She had been to his office a few times. It was better than being in the lonely room or being stuck in here with him. "Tiene una hermana y podría ser un buen objetivo."
He watched her closely as she walked to the office. Dolores always felt she shrunk under his gaze. She opened the office door. She walked over to the files. She lifted the file he asked for. That's when she saw another file that caught her eye. 'Camilo Madrigal.'
She slipped the file under her shirt. This will come in handy later.
