Sorry, I couldn't write it yesterday, I fell too mentally broken to write anything. I'm feeling better now, I think. So, here's out Kutau story! And also, Kukai playing drums is I guess a teaser for... something. So... Minna no Kokoro: UNLOCK!
Utau looked at the lyric sheet. She played at the midi file that contained the melody of her upcoming song. She was singing well when she tripped up. She asked to stop the recording and told them to play the midi file again. There was something wrong. She would expect to hear the three notes take the form of a half note and two quarter noted, or two dotted quater notes and one normal quarter note, but not... whatever this is. She told the people outside the recording room. "I need to take a break" Kukai was waiting outside, like he always did since they started dating. "What's wrong, Utau?" he asked. "There's something wrong with the new song." Utau said. "Oh, right" Kukai said, "Haven't they told you the new song would contain polyrhythms?" "Polyrhythms?" Utau asked. She heard the word before, but didn't really know what it meant. "Come, I'll show you" said Kukai. He got out two drumsticks. "Since when do you play drums?" Utau asked. "Well, you know, if I was in a band, then I would certainly be the drummer. They are cool" Kukai replied.
"Let's start with something simple." Kukai said. He tapped his left drumstick in a steady beat. "Try to sing two notes, in the time it takes me to tap three beats." said Kukai. Utau did some mental maths in her head and figured that she needed to sing in dotted quavers. Utau started singing. "La... La... La... La..." "That was the easy stuff" said Kukai. "Now do the opposite." Kukai said, "Sing three notes in the time it takes me to tap two" Utau stopped. You can't take a third of a beat, right? She then remembered that triplets existed. "I... I can't sing triplets." Utau said. "Just feel the beat" Kukai just said. Utau listened to the beat in her head. She then started singing. "La, La, La, La, La, La" "That's great, Utau!" Kukai said. "Now, the song has both 2:3, 3:2, and 3:4 polyrhythms." Kukai said. "So, try to sing three notes in the time it takes me to tap four"
Utau tried to calculate when she should start the next note. Each note has to last 1 and a third of a beat. Maybe she could mentally block out the second and fourth beat and think of it as a long 3:2 polyrhythm? She remembered Kukai's advice. Just feel the beat. Utau started singing. "La... La... La... La... La... La..." "That's it, Utau!" Kukai said. "Thank you for helping me Kukai" Utau replied. "No problem." Kukai said, "Now let's record that new song" Utau nodded. She went back into the recording room and Utau started to sing. After a while, the song was all done. "You were amazing, Utau!" Kukai said, "You sang the polyrhythms perfectly!" Utau smiled. "Thanks, Kukai" said Utau. "No problem" Kukai said, "Now, how about I treat you for ramen as a reward" "Sure, I would like that"
