Chapter 4

As Haley was trying to scrub the colour out of her hair for nearly an hour and the sun began to rise through the small stain glass window in the bathroom. Haley decided it was a lost cause and got out to dry herself off. She looked at herself in the mirror again.

For everything that had happened recently she was actually looking relatively good. All of her wounds were healed and only a handful of them left more scars. She wasn't sure why her hair like this but she assumed it had something to do with Voldemort. There had been so much red and green light then.

Looking at herself, she figured she could eventually get used to it. It was a little loud for her taste but it was two colours she had been fond of.

As for her lightning mark... it could almost be confused for a tattoo. She wondered if that was from Voldemort as well. Her arms were very sore after that. Or perhaps it was caused by the vortex.

That is if that all actually happened...

She looked at her meagre belongings that were set on the counter. A pair of hospital pajamas, her wand, and the pouch.

She grabbed the wildly decorated pouch that just screamed 'Luna' and finally examined it closely. The cord was made of some sort of black leather. It seemed very sturdy. The bag itself seemed silkier and a light blue and was hand stitched in beautiful multicolour runic patterns.

Haley wanted to cry just looking at it. There were a couple blood stains on it but it appeared as if someone had cleaned it as well as they could.

She untied pouch and opened it as wide as possible. It seemed looking in it looked as if there were four sections.

The first one was clothes. She pulled out what there was. It wasn't much (a tank top, a long sleeve shirt, a hooded pullover, legging, jeans, a pair of pajama bottoms, two pairs of undergarments and socks, and a pair of familiar shiny silver trainers.

The shoes were Luna's favourite pair. The ones she and Haley hunted for all over Hogwarts a week ago to find when that bitch Cho hid them on her.

Aside from the shoes however, Haley had never seen any of the clothes before. They weren't hers or Hermione's and they were not something Luna would wear. Too dark. The shoes were the only thing in the bag of any colour. All the rest were plain black. Somebody must have bought these for her... Probably Luna...

Haley grabbed an outfit. She went with the tank top and leggings as it felt like it was gonna be a warm day and it was easy to run in if she determined that was necessary. Once she had slipped on Luna's shoes she put the rest of the clothing back before opening the second section.

Toiletries. Luna went all out. She got all the basics: toothpaste and brush, shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. But she had also gotten her the hair potions she liked to try to tame her fathers tragic hair she inherited, as well as her muggle eyeliner she liked.

She turned back to the mirror and quickly brushed her teeth before using a drying charm. She pulled out a beautiful golden brush from the bag and pulled it through her hair before adding her taming hair potion that made her hair simply wavy rater than uncontrollable. She parted it in the middle and admired how the colouring had occurred so precisely down the middle perfectly the whole way down. Even the bangs she grown to hide her scar were perfect. She added her eyeliner before cleaning up and checking the next section.

Food and Potions. Well, she was actually feeling fairly well a side from her confusion. She also didn't want to eat any of her food until she knew for sure she would have a regular supply of food.

She quickly took inventory and saw the food was all canned or packaged so it wouldn't go bad quickly, and that there was also bottles of water and juice.

Then she went to the last section. Personal items and money. She saw the map, cloak, and her album along with a couple other books that Hermione must have decided were good for her to have on hand. There was pouch with a handful of galleons and 60 pounds of muggle money.

She put everything away before swinging the pouch around her neck. She grabbed her wand and stuffed it in the wand pocket in her legging.

With one more quick look in the mirror she opened the door and stepped out.

As either he or his husband had done every morning since Haley's arrival Severus immediately went to the hospital wing after getting ready for the day to see if there were any new developments.

He was stunned to find the bed empty upon arrival and even more shocked that James and Lily were still asleep.

He quickly woke Lily worried.

She started at being rocked, "Sev, what is it?"

"Where is she?" he asked quickly.

"Where is wh-?" she cut off her own question when she looked at her daughters empty bed. "JAMES! Where is she?!"

James promptly fell from his seat and then bounced up, wand at the ready.

Severus rushed to Madam Pomfrey's quarters to question her on the girls disappearance.

Lily had begun to breath to quickly, "James, where could she be? Why didn't she wake us?"

Poppy sprinted out of her rooms, shaking her head, "She couldn't possibly be gone! The wards would have woken me if anyone had stepped through that doorway. Entering or exiting!"

"Well maybe she didn't walk through! Maybe she flew," James offered getting a credulous look from the healer.

"What about another vortex?" Lily offered panicked.

"Or maybe you should have checked the bathroom before freaking out...," a voice offered.

The four adults looked at her immediately.

"I mean maybe she doesn't find those hospital pajamas as fashionable as Madam P does," Haley continued.

"You're awake," Lily whispered.

Haley shrugged comedically, "Seem to be." She watched her parents closely. She had never really had any interactions with them and really couldn't tell if they were similar to the dead ones she knew of or not.

She did know that if her memory was correct they were the ones that actually had her though and that meant they were supposed to be her parents. But after 15 years who knows what they thought of her.

The other people in the room were just Madam Pomfrey and Snape. While Madam Pomfrey was the safer choice, Snape was the most consistent person in her life... Even if it wasn't for a good reason. Oh well, no one ever accused her of being a coward.

"Snape!" she yelled loudly pointing at him making them jump at the sudden noise.

Snape's eyebrows rose to his hairline in surprise at not only her recognizing him but also her picking him out from the crowd.

"Haley," he responded gently nodding his head to her. If they were close in the other world he may be able to help her here so he would handle her with kid gloves for now.

"Wrong!" She shouted again. She then slid toward Madam Pomfrey making her go stiff.

When Haley was close to a clearly confused Madam Pomfrey she stage whispered, "Do you see them too?" shoving a thumb in James and Lily's direction.

"You mean... your parents?"

Haley hummed thoughtfully rubbing her chin. "How peculiar..."

They all heard a gasp from the doorway and turned to see two teens staring at them.

When the adults saw who it was they immediately turned back to Haley. Haley on the other hand was fascinated by the two students. If they had been normal students Madam Pomfrey would have asked why they were there. At least her Madam P would've. She skipped over to them before anyone could even register what she was doing. When she was about a meter away from them she looked up into there faces. They were both significantly taller than her.

"I'm Haley Potter," she said, "Who the bloody hell are you?"

James nearly choked at her bluntness.

"I-I uh..." the boy stuttered.

Since Olivia was usual a quite blunt person herself she found herself answer. "I'm Olivia and this is Xavier. We're twins and your siblings."

Siblings? She had siblings. Her James and Lily couldn't have kids... but these ones could have as many as they wanted. So having siblings made sense.

"Birthday?"

"December 15, 1978."

"So you're sixth years."

The twins nodded together.

Haley turned away from them and back to the others. "What's up with Voldemort here?"

Lily spluttered at how fast Haley's topic's changed. When thinking about it she understood that she would be curious about her new world but it was making her head spin.

"What's a vol-di-more?" asked James.

"Voldemort," Severus corrected. "It sounds like a minced way to say flight of death in French."

James rolled his eyes, "Why would you know that?"

"I do have a good grasp on the language, Potter."

"That's it!" Haley shouted.

Everyone looked at her confused. "What?" Snape asked as her eyes never left him.

"You had it wrong before. You called me 'Haley' and said it all nice and stuff," she explained as if it was perfectly obvious. "Potter," she said mimicking the man drawl. "Potter... POTTER... Pot-ter... Ms. P-ot-ter." It seemed as if Haley was trying to do it perfectly. "Turn to page three hundred and ninety-four. Detention! Fifty points from Gryffindor because Potter is still breathing! See that's how it goes!"

Haley looked at his confused expression expectantly but when Snape said nothing Haley shrugged it off.

"So Voldemort?"

James shrugged, "I don't know what this flight of death thing is."

Lily shook her head, "Perhaps there is a miscommunication happening." Lily slowly approached her daughter. "I believe we are lucky to be speaking relatively the same language as it is. Perhaps we could all sit down and relax and you can explain what a Voldemort is."

She stopped in her tracks, "You do know that you travelled into another dimension, right?"

"Bloody well aware of that," Haley said, "I think anyway. I may just have gone slightly insane from the torture as well. I have no idea where I am on the crucio scale but if I were to make a scale from 1 to Longbottoms, I would place myself somewhere in between but slightly more towards the LB side. Cause I got some kind of mind I just ain't got a clue where its at."

"Longbottom?" James questioned confused.

"Yeah, Frank and Alice Longbottom. Totally crucioed to the point of permanent hospitalization," Haley said before gasping, "You can't keep me forever Madam P! I will escape if necessary."

Lily approached again this time making it to Haley's side and slowly putting an arm around the girls shoulders, ignoring the raised eyebrow she got, "That won't be necessary Haley... You do still go by Haley right? You don't have another name you prefer?"

Haley nodded, "Haley James Potter. But if you had a more kids here why would you wait for your bloody third born to give them your middle name? Especially since you had a boy. Or are you as arrogant as Snapeidy Snape said and named all you children after yourself?"

Lily snorted at the put out looks James gave for being called arrogant and Snape gave for being called 'Snapeidy Snape'.

Lily shook her head as she guided Haley to the bed, "No, nothing like that. You see long ago before we were even married we knew we wanted two or three children. It sounded like a nice number for both of us. And when I first got pregnant with the twins we were overjoyed but we quickly got into arguments about names and godparents. While your father and I love each other very much we also have many differences. So to finally stop fighting we decided that for the first pregnancy one of us would choose the godparents the other would choose that name. And then we would switch on the next pregnancy. We even put it in writing. A magical contract so neither could object. We could ask for each others opinions but in the end the choice was our own. Well I had a feeling that baby would be a boy so I let your father make the decision for godparents on the first born because I knew he really wanted to use his best friend as one of them..."

"Sirius!" Haley cut her off.

Lily nodded, "Yes, Sirius. And I wanted to be the one to name the boy that I was sure I was having because your father wanted to name him Godric! I was not having that. I mean what if he was a Slytherin! He would have been picked on the poor kid. Well, I also knew that James wanted the child he named to have his name so I saved that for him in case the next was a boy as well. That was all before we knew that we were having twins however. When we found that out we had briefly thought about doing one each but then remember our contract said per pregnancy not per baby. So I named both twins, Xavier Severus Potter and Olivia Rose Potter. Your father picked their four godparents."

James nodded, "Got pretty lucky there. Had more than enough slots for all my best friends."

"The marauders," Haley nodded.

James smiled that his pals were all the same in multiple universes.

"But wait that would mean... Please tell me Pettigrew isn't my godfather here!"

Olivia quirked her head, "No, he's mine. So is Remus Lupin."

Haley sighed in relief.

"I got Sirius and Alice," Xavier put in his two cents.

Haley questioned, "So if you named me," nodding to James, "that mean you chose my godparents." Haley looked at Lily.

Snape cleared his throat and stepped towards the two that were now seated on the 'Potter Bed' then said, "That would be me."

"What?"

"My husband Thomas and I are your godparents..."

Haley's eyes looked like they were gonna pop out of her head, "You're married!"

Snape nodded.

"To a man!"

Another nod.

"Named Thomas!"

"Yes, was I not in the other world?" Severus questioned wondering what happened to Thomas.

Haley vigorously shook her head. "I've been running on the assumption that the only feelings you had were anger, annoyance, and vindictiveness... Vindictiveness... Vindictiveness... Is that a word? It sounds funny. Vindictiveness."

Lily and James both looked over to Madam Pomfrey... Haley was acting very... odd. The healer just nodded in a sign that they would talk later.

During the look Snape and Haley continued there conversation. Severus wanted to to keep the girl talking as much as possible, even if it was just random rambling. The more they learned about her the better. "Well I can assure you that here Thomas and I are very much in love."

Haley made a face, "Well good for you I guess but that's really weird... Maybe that's why you were an asshole! Maybe he died!"

Severus shrugged, "Is there anyone else that you know is dead there but not here?"

"Yep!"

"Like who?"

Haley pointed at her parents whom gasped. "We're dead?" James asked. "How? When?"

"Voldemort killed you, of course."

Severus hummed before asking, "And what is this Voldemort?"

"VOLDEMORT!" Haley yelled in frustration.

Lily sighed, "Haley, sweetheart, we don't know what this flight of death is... We don't have it here."

Haley blinked at her before muttering, "They will be snatched from a world that has no use of them..."

"What was that?" James questioned.

"You didn't need me here because there is no Voldemort... But they had a Voldemort but no hero. That's why I was taken there," Haley solved out loud.

"Hero?" Snape questioned uncomfortable with where this was going.

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord has arrived," Haley quoted.

"Dark Lord?" Lily gasped paling.

"Only to return when the deed was done... Both prophecies make a lot more sense now," Haley stated to herself.

Severus cleared his throat to get her attention, "Let me get this straight. There was a prophecy saying that if someone summoned you from this world you could defeat some Dark Lord named Voldemort. Someone that no one from that world could defeat. And you somehow completed this task and were brought back here."

Haley nodded.

"And this... Dark Lord... killed us," James added. "You did know that we are your parents, right?"

Haley nodded again, "Yeah, when I arrived over there Dumbledore tested me to see if I had living relatives and learned i was your kid. Handed me over to them."

"Then why didn't you know us?" Olivia questioned.

Haley answered immediately, "That Lily had been hit with a cutting curse. She couldn't have children. Which is why the 'hero' wasn't able to be born either. It needed to be James and Lily's child."

"But you were raised by us?" James said. "Even if it wasn't the real us." That thought made him pleased. He couldn't see any version of himself not taking care of his child. Or any child in his care for that matter. To this James children were the most precious things there were.

"Oh yeah! You were great parents, right up until your death."

"And when was it that Voldemort killed us," Lily asked.

"October 31, 1981."

James cocked his head, "But that was exactly a year after you were taken. Did you run on another timeline?"

"No. A year is accurate."

Lily looked horrified. Her daughter had thought she had lost her parents at the age of one.

She was just about to continue when Haley changed topics again. "I'm hungry." The girl immediately stood and started walking to the exit.

"And where do you think you are going?" Poppy questioned.

"Well since I'm not technically a student here I figured it would be odd of me to eat in the great hall so I decided I would go down to the kitchens and get something for breakfast."

Lily stood again and swooped Haley back towards the bed. "Or we can call a house elf and have them deliver breakfast in bed," Lily insisted as she pulled back the beds blankets and guided her into it.

"But the result of that is me staying in here and I don't like it in here and want to escape," Haley protested even as she let her possibly real mother tuck her into the bed.

"Ms. Potter," Poppy rolled her eyes, "You are my patient not my prisoner."

Haley pointed at her, "Wrong! I believe those two words to be synonyms. My Madam P knews that! Knews? Knows? Knew? I don't knew now."

Lily gave her best friend a nervous look. Severus just gives her a sad smile and nods. His friend was not an idiot. Her husband kind of was, but Lily was smart. She knew what was going on.

The girls confusion, babbling, the quick changes, mixing up words. It was all bad after effects of prolonged use of a strong Cruciatus. They were lucky Haley wasn't completely mindless by the way they were going. But she was still there. She had a mind and that meant that given enough time she could be back to a semi-normal state.

Lily blinked a few tears away mouthing 'later' to her husbands confused looks. "What would yo like to eat?"

"Fruit."

"Fruit? Any in particular?"

"Fresh ones."

Lily nodded, "Fresh fruit it is."

Poppy summoned the hospital wing elf.

"Twinkie, can you get us all our usual breakfasts and a bowl of fruit for Haley."

Before the elf could answer Haley added, "Fresh fruits! I don't like the rotten ones."

As if offended the elf grabbed her bed sheet dress over her heart, "Twinkie never serves rotten fruits."

The elf was only gone 3 seconds before she popped back levitating the plates toward the proper recipient.

When Haley caught her bowl and fork she smiled at the elf and thanked her. The elf was once again startled by Haley. House elves were rarely ever thanked and while Poppy occasionally thanked her out habit Haley was one of the few people to ever thank her and really mean it. She was also the first student to ever thank her.

"You is not needing to thank Twinkies Missy Potter. Twinkies job it is."

Haley smiled softly, "But that would be rude. You did something for me. I am grateful for what you did and to show that I am grateful I must thank you."

"But Twinkies is a house elf, ma'ams."

"So what?" Haley said popping a grape in her mouth. "I have friends that are house elves."

"Friends?" Twinkie squeaked.

Haley just nodded focusing on her food.

"That will be all, Twinkie," Poppy said softly and the elf without another word.

They all ate in mostly silence. The twins were already late to class so they assumed they would be excused for the day again. Severus only had two classes that day and both were in the afternoon so he decided that after second period when his husband also had a spare he would go get Thomas so the two could meet as it seemed Haley had never met any version of him.

Once breakfast was finished Haley excused herself to use the restroom and the adults stood up to have a quick meeting in Poppy's office.

Lily looked at her other children and quickly said, "We'll be back shortly. If Haley's back before us distract her for a second. If you need anything call."

Lily, James, Severus, and Poppy left the door open a crack while they spoke in short whispers.

"What was that?" James asked.

"It the Cruciatus Curse," Poppy stated.

"A few years ago Thomas and I were studying the Unforgivables as research to one of his cases. The Wizengamot was discussing whether or not they should lower the sentence of the two unforgivables that didn't actually kill. Obviously Albus and Thomas were opposed to it. We focused our objections on the Cruciatus because it could be even more dangerous than merely killing someone. You see, from our researching we found that there were different layers to how far into the curse you can go. The first layer is minor. Small curse for short amount of time. You have the shakes for a while, maybe a little stiffness. Once you start getting deeper it gets worse though. You can get a fever or just feel ill. Then you get to the level were you start having spasms. These are all fairly curable or temporary effects that the Liquid Tormentum Sanitatem would help all these. It depends on the amount of time under the curse and how powerful the casting was it but from this we can assume that Haley spent way to long under an incredibly powerful curse. It would be safe to bet that it was this Dark Lord she speaks of."

Lily shivered, "I'm glad we don't have him here."

Severus nodded, "Once you get that deep you start to have problems focusing on reality. You start dreaming away the pain. Usually once its ended in this general area you have a few mental issues. The main ones are becoming bipolar or depressed and have severe moments of confusion but I believe Haley went one stage deeper. In fact I believe she went to the point just before the point of no return."

"No return?" James questioned horrified.

"The point of no return is often compared to if someone were to be kissed by dementors. You're still there physically but you're not truly there. Haley was most likely moments away from this before the curse let up."

Lily wiped away a tear that tracked down her cheek and Severus immediately felt bad for making her cry but they needed to know.

"She got to the point of numbness. The point where her mind blocks out all pain. It's why she hasn't reacted very much at all to all of this. She is still numb from pain including her feelings. She speaks her mind no matter what she thinks because she had no fear to any repercussions."

"Can we fix it?" James whispered as they heard the bathroom door open.

Haley looked around the wing and only saw her two siblings. Did she imagine everyone else? Or were these two the imaginary ones?

"Where is everyone?"

"They just needed to have a small meeting for adults only," Xavier said waving her over to them but Haley didn't move at first.

"Is it about me?"

Xavier didn't lie, "I think so."

"Then I should be in the meeting," Haley stated.

Xavier shook his head, "Na, that's what mum and dad are for. Kids don't go to meetings. They get represented by there parents."

Haley thought about that for a minute before going back to her bed. "I suppose that makes sense. I never had a parents so I'm not an expert on that area."

Olivia tried to ask, "Who raised yo-?" But was cut off when the adults rushed out of the office.

Severus spoke quickly so they could get back.

"I just need to get as much information out of her as possible for now. Maybe then I'll have a better answer but for now I just want everyone to keep her talking. I feel that talking enough should start bringing up come emotions and he numbness may eventually disappear. But keep a close eye on her. If we manager to get her out of the numbness we may be bringing her up to the bipolar and depressed stage which is just as dangerous as leaving her in that state she is currently in. Now we should go now."

Lily wiped her face one more time before going back to her children.
