One Kick Too Many
CHAPTER 1: WHEN AN INVITE TO THE MOVIES BECOMES A VISIT TO THE HOSPITAL INSTEAD!
Marcie was in a very good mood. She had just gotten her allowance and wanted to treat the boy she liked to a movie that Saturday afternoon. The boy she liked was, in fact, Charlie Brown. For all the times he said no one liked him, she carried a torch for the boy since the day they met. Maybe even more so than her best friend Peppermint Patty, which is through her that they met. When she reached his front door, she rang the doorbell. Her mood brightened when he answered it.
"Oh, hi, Marcie," he greeted her.
"Good afternoon, Charles," said Marcie, happily. "I wanted to invite you to the movies this afternoon."
"Sure, I'd love to come," said Charlie Brown. "Is there a double feature playing?"
"WHAT?!" she shouted, mood changing on a dime. "YOU EXPECT ME TO PAY FOR TWO MOVIES?!"
"No, Marcie! A double feature is two movies for the price of one! You pay for one movie and the other is free."
"SO IT IS PAYING FOR TWO MOVIES, EH?!" And before Charlie Brown could continue to explain what a double feature was, Marcie swiftly kicked him in his shin. He hollered in pain and fell to the ground.
"That'll teach you for taking my kindness for weakness, you blockhead!" she sneered, before heading back home in a huff. Charlie Brown was wincing in pain. Sally came out.
"Did you trip over yourself again, big brother?" she asked, expecting him to do something clumsy like he usually did. But then she saw that it was more serious than expected.
Later, Marcie had received a call. It was from Peppermint Patty. She wondered what she was calling about. Her temper had died down, but she was still upset. She went to answer the call.
"Marcie, what did you do to Chuck?!" demanded her tomboy best friend.
"He insulted me, so I kicked him in the shin, sir!" said Marcie, still upset. "The audacity of expecting me to pay for two movies."
"Marcie, a double feature is two movies for the price of one! You don't pay for the second feature!"
"You don't?"
"No! It's included with the first feature."
"Charles did say that you paid for one movie, and the other was free. I guess I never been to any double features, sir."
"I gathered, Marcie. Anyway, that kick you delivered Chuck landed him in the emergency room."
"WHAT?!"
"That's right! I just got off the phone with Sally, as I was calling him to see what he was up to today. She told me about your invite to the movies and how you mistook his asking if it was a double feature for trying to pay for two movies, thus kicking him in the shin. After you left, he couldn't get up, and his parents took him to the hospital. According to Sally, he has a fractured shinbone."
"Good grief! What have I done?!"
