Xander was sitting at a table alone. It was the first school dance of the year and his best friends Buffy and Willow forced him to go. It would be good for him they said as they left him at the table alone to dance with their significant others. He could have been ignored at home, instead of paying the five dollar entry fee.
He looked around the gymnasium seeing everyone either in groups or duos. Well, almost everyone. William sat at the table beside his alone with a book in hand. Xander wondered who forced him to be there. William had moved to Sunnydale last year from England. He really didn't have friends, preferring to read than interact with others.
They shared a few classes together even being partnered together in science class. William was incredible smart and didn't seem to mind that Xander didn't bring a lot to the table academically. He would always explain what they were doing in simple terms which really helped Xander when it came to exams.
Xander would be lying to himself if he said he didn't have a crush on William. He was intelligent, kind, patient, he actually seemed to like to talk to Xander even though they really didn't have anything in common and he was cute as hell in his glasses.
The one thing Xander would love to do is go over to him and ask him to dance, but he couldn't... could he? What if William said no? Worse what if he said yes!
"Would you just ask him to dance already?" Buffy said as she sat down beside him. Angel, Willow and Oz decided to take a break. All of them hoping Xander would get bored of being alone and finally make a move on William.
"I can't. I don't even know if he's into guys," Xander explained. He couldn't ask a straight guy to dance. That would be awkward.
Oz was watching William. "He's reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda." He took a peek at the cover of the book.
"I love that book," Xander replied. That book gave Xander the courage to come out to his friends.
"Looks like you might know the answer than," Willow said as she got Xander out of his chair with the help of Angel.
Xander cursed Angel's strength. "He might just like the book."
"Then go talk about the book," Buffy said helpfully. She then pushed him away from the table in the direction of William.
Buffy pushed him a little too hard and he ended up hitting the table William was sitting at making William jump in surprise. William pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose as he looked up at who disturbed him. "Xander," William greeted.
"H-hey, William. Can I join you?" Xander asked ready to go back to his own table with his tail between his legs.
"Please," William said as he placed his book down on the table.
Xander sat down quickly before his legs gave out on him. "Hi."
"Hello," William said confused.
"I um... I wanted to ask you something."
What could Xander possibly want to ask him? "Is it about our homework assignment? We could go over it now if you'd like." He pulled his backpack from under the table and started to pull out his textbooks.
"It's not about homework though I didn't understand anything Mr. Blair said." Xander closed the booked William just opened. "I wanted to ask you to dance."
"Dance?"
Xander swallowed hard. "With me."
William gathered all his books up and put them back in his backpack before standing up.
"Where are you going?" Xander asked in a panic. He should have just left William alone.
"I thought we were going to dance," William said wondering this had been some sort of prank.
Xander's eyes widened. "Really? You want to dance with me?"
With a smile William held out his hand. "There is no one else I'd like to dance with."
Leading William out onto the floor where other couples were dancing Xander placed his hands on William's hips leaving William to wrap his arms around Xander's neck. "Is this okay?"
"Yes," William confirmed with a nod.
Xander had no idea what song was playing and he didn't care. Thanks to his friends he had the courage to do something about his crush. "Do you want to sit with us?"
"At the dance or lunch?"
"Both," Xander said quickly.
Normally he liked to eat alone but William could get used to eating with other people as long as one of them were Xander. "I would like that very much." Taking a chance he leaned in and gave Xander a very soft peck on the lips.
It didn't go unnoticed by Xander's friends who started whistling at them.
William pulled away his pale cheeks now pink. "Your friends are a bit of an acquired taste."
"Tell me about it, but they're good people."
"I guess they have to be if they have you as a friend," William commented this time making Xander blush.
The music went from soft and slow to loud and fast causing Xander and Spike to pull apart. "Thanks," Xander said for the dance and kiss.
"Thank you for asking. I was upset with my mum for making me come here but I think I'm going to have to buy her some flowers as a thank you."
Xander pulled out his wallet and handed William a twenty. When it looked like William didn't understand Xander said, "Tell her thanks for me as well."
"Mum's really going to like you," William replied with a smile. Xander must really like him to want to buy flowers for a woman he'd never met.
"Want to go get a drink with me?" Xander asked. The doors to the gym were unlocked for the bathrooms, they could slip out to the vending machines.
The gym was louder than William liked and being alone with Xander sounded too good to pass up. Maybe if he was lucky maybe he and Xander could kiss a little more, away from prying eyes this time.
"Yes, I'm suddenly parched."
They left the gym together and didn't return until Willow came and told them the dance was wrapping up.
The End
