Blacknot Castle
The meal took place in the courtyard that led into the basement level of the castle.
It was a beautiful setting, with ivy on the high walls, tables lined with lace and floating candles lighting the entire area.
The bridal party were all close to the head table; Salvadora Nott sat with Lotus Cauldwell, Narcissa and John and Elizabeth Granger.
At the next table were Sorenson and Clara with their growing family. Oscar had been married to the muggle-born he had fallen in love with at Hogwarts for seven years now. He and Cassie's six-year-old daughter, Sage, had been the flower girl today. Sorenson and Clara's two daughters Josette (Josie) and Coraline (Cora), who had been born almost a year apart to the day, were also at the table. Josie had just turned 15, and Cora had just turned 14, so Sorenson wasn't quite at the point of worrying about boyfriends yet.
At the next table sat the Sheppard family. John and Elizbeth had quite the growing brood too. Their eldest son, Jackson, was sitting next to his wife, and Lacey was glowing. Her hand was resting on her bump, and she had been checking up on Theo all day, but he was doing okay. There were far fewer tears today than there had been on her wedding day. Grayson, the Sheppard's younger son, was sitting with Marcella and Johnny, who was bouncing around hyperactively thanks to the chocolate bar his grandfather had given him earlier.
The Black-Nott kids were sitting together – Charlus with Vic, the rest dateless. Sharing the table with them were the Potter and Longbottom kids. None of them had brought dates either. Most of them were too young or just not in committed relationships.
And the horseshoe-shaped head table had all of the most important people at it. Nina, Nick, Teddy, and Almina sat at the top from left to right. Then down one side sat Sadie, Hermione, Harry, Rob and Addison. Directly opposite them on the other side of the horseshoe sat Theo, Draco, Daphne, Jen and Delphi. It was perfectly laid out so that everyone sat opposite their partner.
"Well worked out, Daphne," Jennifer had noted with a smile.
Daphne smiled back and remarked that "Oh, it only took a little bit of brainpower and a few glasses of wine."
Harry snorted quietly on the other side of the table and muttered to Hermione, "It took a week and a few bottles of wine."
Hermione laughed and whispered, "Don't let her hear you say that. You won't be getting any for weeks."
"Days, maybe," Harry returned in a whisper, "She couldn't hold out that long."
Hermione smacked him under the table, and Harry chuckled, "I'm surprised that you weren't a control freak about the wedding, to be honest."
Hermione shot him a smirk and whispered, "I have a country to run. I figured Marchioness Potter could handle planning a wedding on her own."
Harry grinned and then noticed Daphne giving him an exasperated look.
Hermione followed his line of sight and laughed, "How did she know?"
"We were laughing, and I was trying not to grin," Harry said with an amused shake of his head, "Therefore, she knew we were talking about her."
They were silenced by the start of the speeches. The first was the first father of the bride speech, a joint effort by Draco and Theo.
"This is going to end in disaster, isn't it?" Harry whispered to Hermione.
"For Almina? Probably," Hermione returned with a smile.
From the look on Almina's face, she felt the same.
"They say that nobody will ever love a little girl more than her father, even when she's not little anymore," Theo began, "Sadly, that's not always true. But for those of us who feel blessed to have children, it is."
He smiled over at Almina, "When she was a little girl, I had a whole host of dreams for Almina, but I was scared about the day she'd decide to go out and chase them too. I remember tucking her in at night, back when this castle was cold and draughty because the wonder girl here hadn't introduced us to the merits of double glazing or electricity yet."
Hermione smiled, and a chuckle went around the courtyard.
Theo smiled at Almina and said, "I would say, I hope you see the seven wonders, I hope you sail the seven seas, I hope you let the whole world in your heart, but you still keep room for me."
"And then we became a family," Theo said, looking over at Draco, "And suddenly, there were two of us who didn't want her to grow up and chase those dreams."
Draco got to his feet and took over. "But you can't hold a strongminded girl like that back, so she fell in love with Teddy, and it was a bittersweet moment, watching her graduate and go to him, not one of us. I think that was the moment we realised that Teddy was going to be around for a long time."
Teddy smiled and put an arm around Almina.
"I still remember what Theo said to Almina on her graduation night," Draco continued. "He said, 'I know you have to go out on your own, and I'm so proud of you, you know? You're the best thing that we ever did.' And I think we probably both cried that night."
Theo nodded, "Yeah, I think we did. And we hoped this day would come, but we dreaded it too. We always hoped Almina would find a guy who treated her right, and she did. She found herself a whole family."
Theo reached down and squeezed Almina's shoulder.
"And this is it," Draco said, not ashamed of the tears in his eyes, "The point where we let go. It's like we've gone back in time, and we're watching Almina flying off on a broom with the height assist turned off for the first time. Only this time, her adventure is a lot bigger."
Almina smiled tearfully.
"But all the more rewarding," Theo continued, "Because she gets to live her life, she gets to explore, love and raise a family of her own. And she can do it without us, so this is the point we let go. But we do it knowing we gave her everything she needs to get through this crazy adventure we call life."
Draco nodded, "She trusts her gut and holds her own when she needs to."
"She forgives the wrongs of those she loves, and she loves herself," Theo agreed, "Which is the hardest thing to do."
"And whatever life throws at her, she'll make it through," Theo said with a tearful smile, "Because she's a Potter-Wolfe now, but she was born a Black-Nott, and we're nothing if not survivors."
Harry wiped his eyes and smiled up at Draco. He knew how much this meant to his former Auror partner. Draco smiled tearfully back at him.
Then he and Theo raised their glasses.
"So I hope you two understand," Theo said to Nick and Teddy, "That no matter what you do, we'll always be the men who love her the most."
Draco nodded and said, "To Almina on her wedding day."
This toast was echoed, and everyone had a drink. Theo and Draco then sat down, gripping each other's hands under the table. Theo pretty much downed his champagne, and Draco took a few breaths to steady himself while Harry got to his feet to give a speech for Nina.
She looked nervous, and Harry knew why. She probably wasn't expecting much, just a basic little thing, something to fill a gap. But Harry would never do that, not to a girl as wonderful as Nina Frost.
"Thank you for making me cry already," Harry said, glancing over at Draco and Theo, "I thought I'd last a lot longer than that."
"You're welcome," Theo said, holding up his once again full glass.
Harry chuckled and said, "Thank you, everyone, for making an effort to come today. It was last minute, but you all showed up, and everyone is grateful for that. Thank you, Delphi, for being Teddy's best person and keeping him and Nick right today. And thank you, Addison, for keeping the nerves at bay for the brides. I know that must have been hard, I've met Nina, after all."
There was a little laugh at that, and Harry smiled at Nina. "I remember when she went to Hogwarts and panicked that the sorting hat wouldn't fit her or that it might spit her out and tell her she was actually just a squib. Of course, it didn't do either of those things. It just yelled 'Hufflepuff' the minute it landed on her head because she is a Hufflepuff through and through."
Nina looked up at Harry in surprise, and he smiled fondly at her.
"Nina lost her parents when she was young," Harry continued. "And she was a little tearaway, always running around Lupin House after Nick and Teddy at every gala while her guardian and I would talk politics for hours."
Howard Abbott, who was sitting close by with Hannah, Hamish and their two children, laughed and nodded at that.
"And I always had a soft spot for her," Harry admitted. "From the moment I saw her sitting in a DMLE waiting room, feet hanging down, a Quibbler in her hand, and a kind smile on her face even moments after she had lost her parents. I just knew this girl would be special, and she had a place in my heart the minute I met her. I'd have taken her home myself, but I think my wife might have killed me since we were 19 years old and barely married, and we'd just adopted Teddy."
Teddy smiled warmly, but everyone else chuckled.
"All the same, Howie gave her a damn good life," Harry said with a nod, "And I saw her grow up, and she is just as wonderful as I thought she would be. Nobody had to teach her manners; it's just the way she has always been. She holds the door for anyone behind her. She said please and thank you before she had even ridden a broom. She doesn't steal, cheat or lie. She has climbed mountains to get where she is, Paediatric Healing is such a hard field to break into, but she's perfect for it because she is what she has always been – humble and kind."
Nina smiled tearfully, and Nick put an arm around her shoulder, placing a light kiss against her cheek.
"I said it as soon as I met her," Harry finished, "That Nina Frost was an amazing name so that the girl who bore it would do amazing things. I never in a million years expected that one day Nina Frost would become Nina Potter-Wolfe. But I admired her when I met her, and she was only a little girl, so I can understand why my son fell in love with her when he met her as a woman."
Teddy reached over and grabbed Nina's hand. She brought her free hand up to wipe her tears, and Harry realised his eyes were a little wet too, but he didn't lift a hand to wipe them away.
"I think if more people in the world were like Nina, it would be a far better place to live," Harry said softly, "More people should be humble and kind. So, here's to Nina on her wedding day."
He held up his glass, which of course had no alcohol in it. But everyone echoed the toast and drank from their glasses all the same. Harry reached over to kiss Nina on the cheek, and she whispered tearfully, "Thank you."
"I only spoke the truth," Harry promised with a smile before taking his seat once more.
Rob nudged him in the side, and Harry glanced at the man to his right.
"You've not lost your touch. Nice speech."
Harry noted the slight hitch in Rob's voice. He smiled slightly and patted him on the back. But they didn't exchange any other words before the next speech.
It was by the grooms, who had elected to do it together.
Like Draco and Theo had, Teddy and Nick stood up together and took turns to speak.
"Like my dad said," Teddy began, "Thank you to everyone who has come to celebrate with us today. Thanks to Angel for keeping us right and Addison for looking after our girls. Thanks to Mum for organising this thing. We'd never have made the ring exchange if she hadn't forced us to practice for two hours."
Everyone laughed loudly at that.
"And thank you to Almina's Pops for getting an army of house-elves together to get this all ready with only a couple of weeks notice," Teddy finished.
"He really took one for the team," Nick agreed, "How long did that cursed broom hit you on the arse for?"
Everyone laughed, but Theo took it in his stride, "Ten minutes. Thank you for that, by the way, princess."
Hermione smirked, "Elf welfare is paramount, Theodore."
"That's an exclusive!" Theo joked, "You heard that right here, from the Minster herself!"
Almina shook her head and muttered, "Pops, stop."
Theo just grinned. Embarrassing his children was a speciality of his, after all.
Nick continued with the speech, "Thanks to Natasha for coming back from the dead at the perfect time."
Natasha stood up and did a mock bow, to everyone's amusement. Addison shook her head and pulled her back into her seat with a grin, muttering, "Idiot," as she did so. Natasha's grin just widened as she stole a kiss from her girlfriend.
"But most of all, thank you to the wonderful women sitting on either side of us today," Nick finished with a smile at Nina. "Not many girls would take the sentence 'I think I'm in love with my best friend' too well. Especially when it comes out two days after you've moved in together. But Nina just laughed and said, 'What else is new?' and I think that was when I thought, yeah, I'm marrying this girl."
Teddy laughed and added, "And meeting someone, then having a whirlwind romance with them is one thing. But when I told Almina that I loved Nick, she didn't blink."
There was a soft chuckle at that, and Teddy smiled broadly at Almina, who smiled right back.
"I never dreamed I would get to marry one amazing person, let alone three. But the four of us, we fit together, like our souls are made to be next to each other, and I am incredibly thankful to all of you today."
"So am I," Nick agreed, "So thank you, Nina and Mina, for loving us and for being so open and accepting."
"Love is love," Almina said softly.
"It knows no boundaries," Nina agreed.
Nick and Teddy held up their glasses and clinked them together.
And someone, Harry was pretty sure that it was Theo, yelled, "To the Potter-Wolfe's!"
"To the Potter-Wolfe's!" Everyone echoed as they toasted the newlyweds.
The meal was had, and everyone chatted away and made small talk. Then the tables were cleared away, and many photographs were taken. At the same time, the courtyard was turned into a beautiful dancefloor beneath the stars.
The cake was cut, and then it was time for the first dance. As the opening riffs of a muggle song with a strong country vibe began to play, Nick led Nina onto the floor, and Almina dragged Teddy onto it.
"I was born to a family of jokers
Gamblers and smokers living on the line
I was raised by strong-headed women
Men who tested limits and did a little time."
Draco held his hand out to Hermione and said, "The song is appropriate for Almina, isn't it?"
Hermione let him drag her onto the dancefloor, "Are you calling me strong-headed?"
"You know you're strong-headed," Draco said, pulling her in close.
Next to them, Sadie danced closely with Theo and murmured, "You definitely tested the limits."
"Of magic or your patience?"
"Both," Sadie joked, kissing him softly and falling into rhythm with him.
"And it ain't a mystery you fell for me
We're just two lost souls trying to find our peace."
Harry smiled at Daphne and pulled her in close, "I still think it's a mystery that you fell for me."
"I would always fall for you," Daphne murmured, "In any universe, in any version of reality, I would find you and fall in love with you."
Harry smiled, "You're stealing my lines."
Daphne kissed him and rested her head against his shoulder, "I'm happy today. Despite Dad not being here….I'm happy."
"So am I," Harry said softly.
"Love like ours ain't a masterpiece
It's a good day in the sun."
Rob had been forced to dance by Jen, and while he wasn't a natural dancer, any excuse to sway close to his wife was okay by him.
"He's so happy," Jennifer whispered, motioning over to Nick and Nina.
Rob smiled and kissed the top of Jen's head, "Yeah, he deserves to be."
"They all do," Jennifer murmured.
"I was born to love you
Out where the water is wide
Make me your country bride
You'll be my prince of tides."
"I love you," Nina whispered, kissing Nick softly.
"I love you too," Nick whispered back.
"You're going to make an amazing father," Nina said, holding him tightly and looking over at Teddy, "You both are."
"You're going to be brilliant too," Nick promised.
"You were born to heal me
Under a velvet sky
Cattails dancing in the light
We were born to live a long and happy life
A happy life."
Almina kissed Teddy and wrapped her arms around his neck.
Teddy grinned, "Thank you for loving us."
"Thank you for letting me into your family," Almina countered.
"Our family," Teddy corrected.
Almina smiled and kissed him again, "Our family…I like the sound of that."
"Hm," Teddy murmured against her lips, "Me too."
"Yeah, folks like us
We may lie down in darkness
But we don't lose our sparks we bring back a good story to tell
'Cause we grew up around beauty
Sunsets better than a movie
We knew it was our appointed duty to love like the world might end
And to toast to good nights with friends."
Nick and Nina reached Teddy and Almina, and the blue-haired man said, "Swap?"
Nick laughed, and they swapped partners. Almina drew Nick into a faster rhythm because she was more of a natural dancer than Nina, and Nina pulled Teddy close to sway with him.
"How are you doing?" Teddy asked quietly.
"I'm fine," Nina promised, "Those drops you gave me this morning are perfect. I've not been sick once today."
"More than just a pretty face, huh?" Teddy joked.
Nina smiled and reached up to kiss him, quite a feat because the most significant height difference between the four of them was between her and Teddy. He ducked his head down a little to meet her lips, and when she broke away, Nina murmured.
"You're so much more than a pretty face, and you know that."
"I know. And I promise I'll stop putting myself down," Teddy said, answering her unasked question, "For you."
"Hm," Nina mused, "You better, because like I said to Nick just now, you're going to be an amazing father, both of you."
Teddy smiled broadly and nodded. It was a silent thank you.
"I was born to love you
Out where the water is wide
Make me your country bride
You'll be my prince of tides
You were born to heal me
Under a velvet sky
Cattails dancing in the light
We were born to live a long and happy life."
"Man, you can dance, Mina!"
Almina laughed and twirled out, then let Nick pull her back in, "I had a choice when I was five – Quidditch or dance classes, and I out-smarted my parents and picked both."
"Course you did," Nick said with a fond smile.
They slowed down and danced a little closer together, "I always thought Teddy would pick you, you know? Cause you always seemed to get what you wanted. I never thought it would end up like this."
"You never thought I'd want you too," Almina said, reading between the lines.
Nick met her eyes and nodded.
Almina smiled and reached up to kiss him lightly, "Well I do, Nick. I really do."
Nick kissed her back then spun her out a final time, letting go of her this time. She squealed then was caught by a grinning Teddy, who had obviously known exactly what Nick was planning.
They all laughed, and Almina said, "Well, go on then, aren't you two going to dance?"
Teddy scoffed, "To this? Nah."
The song had just come to an end anyway, so the band launched into upbeat Irish folk, with a rendition of Whiskey in the Jar.
Nick grabbed Teddy's hand and pulled him over to dance. Nina and Almina laughed as Rob suddenly yelled, "Now this is more like it!"
The Celtic theme continued, and upbeat folk music was played all night long. Harry would have danced all night, but even he needed a break every so often. And during one of those breaks, while he was drinking soda at the pop-up bar, he spoke to a middle-aged woman with blonde hair and blue eyes.
"You fancy dancing?"
"Oh…no…no, I shouldn't."
Harry smiled slightly and glanced around, "It's okay, Lareina, I know it's you."
Lareina's eyes widened, "You….how?"
Harry finished his drink and slid a firewhiskey towards her, "Do you honestly think Daphne and I don't talk? She told me what happened, and I understood why you wanted to be here."
He looked out at the dance floor, where Teddy was flinging Almina around. Nick was laughing with his arm around Nina's shoulder from the sidelines.
Lareina followed his gaze and smiled, "He is so happy."
"He is," Harry agreed.
Lareina's gaze shifted to her other grandchildren. William wasn't dancing. Instead, he was hanging around outside with Arthur. But Andrea and Thea were dancing with Ella and Laurel and having a great time. Alastor occasionally threw his sisters around the dancefloor. Still, mostly he was dancing with Delphi or Addison when she wasn't with Natasha. Ever the showman, which made Harry smile.
"They all are."
Harry tore his gaze away from his kids to look at Lareina. She was smiling, but she had tears in her eyes too.
"You raised them so well," Lareina said, "You and Daphne…you did everything right."
Harry held out his hand to her, "You did a pretty good job with Daphne too. And that's coming from the man who fell in love with her."
Lareina laughed tearfully and shook her head, "All I see are my failures. I suppose that's what Azkaban does to you."
"D'you know what helps chase those feelings away?" Harry asked.
Lareina raised an eyebrow, "No?"
"Dancing," Harry said.
Lareina looked at his outstretched hand, "Why would you want to dance with me?"
"Because you're my mother-in-law," Harry replied softly, "And despite what she says, Daphne loves you and…I never got to dance with you at our wedding like I should have done, so there's no time like the present, right?"
The band finished playing Galway Girl and broke out into a jaunty rendition of Belle of Belfast. Lareina caved and took his hand, and Harry pulled her onto the dance floor to throw her around.
Daphne was chatting away with Sadie, but she smiled when she saw Harry throwing her mother around. Lareina was laughing and looking happier than she had in a long time as he did so.
The dancing and music went on until midnight when it came to a very cheerful and loud end with a song that everyone loved. It never failed to get every witch and wizard on the dancefloor at the end of a wedding.
Harry was drunk on happiness, even though he hadn't had a single drink. He was still having the time of his life.
"By yon bonnie banks, by yon bonnie braes," He was singing as he danced with Lilly, who he had danced with pretty much all night. Neville's back gave him bother if he was on his feet too long, and when Daphne wasn't socialising, she did dance. But Harry and Lilly had only really stopped for drinks and toilet breaks.
"Where the sun shines on the Black Loch!" Lilly sang loudly and badly.
"Where me and tea tree my true love spent many days. On the banks of the Black Loch," Harry sang with her as they swayed together happily.
"Too sad we parted in yon shady glen, in the shadow of Hogwarts," Everyone on the dancefloor was singing. Nina was gone; Nick had taken her up to bed about an hour ago then had come back to join the party when she promptly passed out. He, Teddy and Almina were still partying. Almina was in the middle of the two men at the moment as they all sang.
"Where the broken heart knows no second spring. Resigned we must be while we're parting."
The band kicked up the speed, and everyone started to dance and sing at the top of their lungs.
"You'll take the high road and I'll take the low road, and I'll be in Scotland afore you. Where me and my true love will never meet again. On the bonnie, bonnie banks of the Black Loch!"
Harry and Lilly were both laughing at how off-key the other was.
"You're shit!"
"I've drunk half the Nott's fucking whiskey store!" Lilly snorted, "You've got no excuse!"
Harry grinned, "You're so far gone. I've got the full east end girl here."
Lilly grinned at him mischievously, "Come with me, I've got an idea."
The 'Secret' Greenhouse
Between the Potter and Longbottom Estates
Harry and Lilly were giggling and acting like teenagers. They were well aware of that, but they didn't really care either.
"It's a good thing you're an ex-alkie," Lilly said as she kicked her feet, and they swung absentmindedly on the porch-swing inside the greenhouse.
"Why? Cause you'd have splinched us if you'd try to take us home?" Harry asked.
He took a pull from the joint she'd given him and handed it back to her.
"Uh, yeah, exactly," Lilly said.
"Daphne's gonna kill us if she finds out what we're doing," Harry said.
Lilly snorted, "Daphne? Pfft, come on, Daphne likes her men and women on the 'bad' side. Her first love was Draco."
"He wasn't a bad boy. He was just an idiot," Harry said.
Lilly handed the joint back and giggled.
Harry sniggered, "This is perfectly rolled, by the way. I've confiscated less convincing joints from people who deal this for a living."
"Hm, maybe I should quit my day job and start dealing in mandrake leaf," Lilly mused.
Harry snickered and said, "Would pay better."
"Oh, but Harry," Lilly teased, "A life of crime never pays. Isn't that your catchphrase?"
"Fuck off," Harry laughed, handing her the joint back, "It was one stupid poster, which I didn't even agree to, by the way. Fucking Draco Malfoy….honestly."
Lilly took a pull and tried to stifle her laughter as she handed it back to him.
"You and Neville do this all the time, don't you?" He asked, giving her a knowing look.
"All the time," Lilly said with a grin.
"Hm," Harry murmured suggestively, "What would you have said if the Head Auror caught you?"
Lilly leant forward and lowered her voice, "I'd have said, but Harry," and somehow she managed to make his name sound sexual, "Head Auror Potter, sir, it's for medicinal use."
Harry chuckled and handed her the joint back. Then he lowered his gaze to her lips, "Oh, is that so, Miss Moon?"
Lilly grinned and moved over to straddle him. She took a pull from the joint and said quietly, "I'm a Healer. I can show you just how miraculous the effects are if you want?"
Harry laughed and took a final pull from the joint, then banished it, pulling her in for a kiss which she returned readily. Mandrake leaf wasn't a hard drug; it just set the nerves on fire. Everything felt a little sharper, every touch burned just that little more.
No wonder Lilly and Neville used it all the time, he couldn't help but think. Lilly sucked his lower lip in her mouth, and Harry groaned and ran his hands under her dress. She gasped at the feel of his cold hands against her warm skin.
Neither of them noticed the greenhouse door opening.
Daphne shook her head at them and looked over at Neville, "Unbelievable."
Neville grinned and chuckled, "Inevitable," he corrected.
Daphne's heeled feet clicked into the greenhouse loudly, "Honestly! You're worse than teenagers! Getting drunk and smoking mandrake leaf then making out in the greenhouse?"
Lilly broke the kiss and fought back a laugh, "Are you jealous that we're kissing or that we didn't wait for you?"
"I'm pretty sure it's both," Neville, who had been drinking for the first time in a few years, chuckled. He wasn't drunk by any means, but he was definitely happily tipsy. On the other hand, Daphne must have sank nearly a whole bottle of tequila, but she was as steady on her feet and sure of herself as ever.
Neville pulled a joint from his back pocket and said, "And do you really think you're the only one packing?"
Lilly tutted, "And to think of the berating I just got from our former Head Auror here," she shot Harry a suggestive look.
Daphne raised an eyebrow and lit the joint in Neville's hand with a click of her fingers.
"How can she do that so drunk?" Lilly complained.
"I don't know, but it's hot," Harry said. He and Lilly hadn't actually moved from the compromising position that Neville and Daphne had found them in.
Neville took a deep drag from the joint then passed it to Daphne.
"It's really hot," He agreed.
Daphne pushed Neville onto the swing next to Harry and casually swung herself onto his lap. He groaned and took the joint back from her.
"So what makes us hornier, weddings, alcohol or this?" Daphne asked, gesturing to the joint.
Lilly swiped it from Neville, "All of the above?"
Harry groaned and let his head rest against the back of the bench, "Our houses are full of bloody kids though."
Daphne grabbed the joint from Lilly and smirked, "Well, we've ticked a lot of things off your bucket list. What about sex on a greenhouse? Is that up there?"
Neville nabbed the joint and took a final pull before vanishing it away.
"It's definitely on mine."
