Jason Isaac Shepard internally analyzed his options. He had just destroyed the Alpha Relay, sacrificing over 300,000 Batarians to delay the Reaper invasion. The Batarian Hegemony would surely use this incident to try to declare war against the Alliance. To prevent this, Admiral Hackett told Shepard that he should surrender to the Alliance and stand trial, in order to avoid a war that would weaken both the Batarians and the Alliance.
Shepard knew it would be the right thing for him to surrender, but something inside him said otherwise. The Alliance was full of racist idiots who didn't like aliens, and Shepard hated that kind of person. They also never helped him with anything and discarded him as soon as he was no longer useful, and because of their lack of action, thousands of innocent humans were killed by the Collectors. Shepard was already tired of them and there was another reason too.
Liara.
Shepard and Liara had suffered a lot in the past two years, with Shepard dying and Liara changing completely because of that, sinking into a sense of revenge that nearly cost them the love they both felt for each other. With a lot of suffering and hard work, Shepard and Liara finally rediscovered their love, which was now so strong that it would resist everything and it was something they would both not give up so easily, Shepard had made his decision.
"No." Shepard said coldly to Admiral Hackett.
"What do you mean 'no'?" The Admiral asked confused.
"I'm NOT surrendering myself." Shepard turned and looked deeply into Hackett's eyes. "You have no choice here, Commander. It's either that or a war with the Batarians." Hackett said.
"I don't care, I'm not surrender." Shepard said with conviction. Hackett sighed irritably. "Listen here, Shepard..."
"No, listen you!" Shepard yelled angrily as he began to glow blue. "I'm already tired of sacrificing myself for the Alliance. You just used me and discarded me right away. You didn't care about the missing colonies and just kept enjoying your new seat on the Council. Now, you expect me to surrender and be treated like a terrorist?!" Shepard yelled angrily as he glared deadly at Hackett. "You consider Cerberus to be a terrorist organization, but you two have a lot in common."
Hackett sighed irritably, he knew there was no way to convince Shepard anymore. Since he started in the Alliance, Shepard has always been a troubled soldier, being reprimanded several times for insubordination and disrespect to his superiors. "Is that how you want to play it, Commander?" Shepard calmed down and controlling his biotics. "Yes. Now get the hell out of my ship and good luck in the war against the Hegemony."
Hackett turned to walk out of the Normandy SR-2 infirmary, giving a small look back, annoyed. "I tried to make it easy, Shepard, but you're forcing me to take extreme measures." After saying that, Hackett leaves. Shepard sighed as he lowered himself into a chair. His decision might have doomed the Galaxy, but he didn't careed.
"EDI." After a few minutes, Shepard called for the ship's AI, then a blue hologram appeared beside him. "Admiral Hackett has already left the Normandy, Commander." The AI said, already knowing what Shepard was going to ask. "Good. Tell Joker to set up a course to Hagalaz." Shepard was exhausted, all he wanted most now was to get some sleep and be with Liara. "Right now, Shepard."

Liara was monitoring a lot of information that came to her through the Shadow Broker's network, most notably that involving the recent destruction of a Mass Relay that resulted in the deaths of more than 300,000 Batarians on the Bahak system. It had been over 2 days since Liara had heard from Shepard, and that worried her. She couldn't gather any information on where Shepard could be, and he never went that long without contacting her.
"Shadow Broker?" The small information drone that Liara now calls Glyph caught her eye, snapping her out of her reverie.
"Yes, Glyph?"
"The Normandy SR-2 shuttle is asking for perdition to dock." Those words made Liara's heart start to race, it could only mean Shepard was here. "Permission granted!" Liara squealed in a rush as she got up from her chair and turned to the door. Several minutes later, the door opened and a figure that always made Liara's legs tremble entered the room. White skin, very well cared black hair and beard, bright blue eyes with a huge scar in his right eye, wearing a black formal suit that was perfect on him.
"Jason!" Liara screamed and ran towards Shepard, kissing him fiercely as she hugged him as if he were going to disappear. Shepard was very shocked by Liara's manner at first, but soon calmed down and returned the kiss with equal love and passion. Unfortunately for both of them, they started to get short of breath and had to break apart, yet Liara hugged Shepard, burying her face in his shoulder. "Goddess, you worried me so much!"
Shepard only smiled. Since they rekindled their relationship, Liara was much more worried and possessive with him, not that Shepard was complaining, as he act the same way with Liara. "Sorry, love. It was not my intention."
"What happened Jason? Why haven't you talked to me for the past two days?" Liara asked worriedly as she gazed into Shepard's bright blue eyes.
"It's a long story..." Shepard said before sighing. "You must have already heard about the Mass Relay that exploded and killed over 300,000 Batarians, didn't you?"
"Yes. My agents have only been investigating this for the past…" Liara trailed off as she connected the dots. She looked at Shepard startled. "Please tell me you had nothing to do with that..." Shepard didn't say anything, he just nodded his head, confirming Liara's fears. "Goddess…but why? What happened?"
"Admiral Hackett asked me to rescue an agent who had information about an imminent Reaper invasion on Batarian space. I rescued her and confirmed her suspicions, the Reapers would invade the Milky Way in less than two days, but before I could do anything I was captured and sedated for two days. When I woke up, I had less than an hour to destroy that Mass Relay and delay the Reaper invasion. I tried to warn then, but there was no time to evacuate the Batarian colony, so I had no choice but to destroy the Mass Relay and cause the death of thousands of Batarians to delay the Reapers." Shepard sadly told Liara everything. She was shocked by all this.
"Goddess, I… I'm sorry Jason." Liara then hugged Shepard once more as she ran her hands gently down his back. She knew Shepard was suffering a lot from it, even though he didn't show it. "Don't worry, I'm here for you. Always." Liara whispered in Shepard's ear. Her soft voice and her touch soothed him, that was what he needed now
"Thanks." Shepard muttered as he pulled away from Liara and looked deep into her sapphire blue eyes, eyes he'd loved since he first saw them. "I love you." Liara smiled at those words. "I love you too." Both then kissed once more, but this time in a slow, lingering kiss where they declared their undying love for each other.
After parting their lips, Liara and Shepard pressed their foreheads together and enjoyed a small moment of silence alone, but Liara had a strange feeling, she felt there was something else Shepard wasn't telling her.
"You know you don't have to keep anything from me, Jason. What's wrong?" Liara asked softly. Shepard just sighed, he couldn't hide anything from her. "Admiral Hackett wants me to surrender myself to the Alliance and go to trial to prevent a war with the Batarians."
"What!?" Liara screamed at that. She couldn't lose Shepard again, she had already spent two years without him, suffering day after day, she would do anything to not have to suffer like that again.
"Don't worry. I've already made it clear to him that I'm not going to do this, even if it means a war against the Hegemony. What I did was tragic, but necessary, and I'm not going to be treated like a criminal in from of an Alliance court only because of that. I'm staying here with you." These words soothe Liara. Shepard then kissed her tenderly on the forehead and hugged her protectively as she buried her head in his chest. "Thanks." Liara mutters and Shepard smiles. They didn't care about the Galaxy burning around them, only about themselves. Sometimes it feels good to be selfish.
