Notes: I'd like to thank merendinoemiliano for leaving a review and saying that's a "quite well written story". Seriously, it's the little things that make you want to keep going when writing a fanfic.
Chapter 5
They were both still panting after they both had reached their climaxes. The sorceress had her legs wrapped around his waist as he firmly pressed her body with his against the wall, still inside her. Dante was slowly biting the crook of her neck, when his enhanced hearing caught the sound of keys on the door. He stopped and turned his head to the sound's direction.
"What's wrong?" Phoebe asked as he looked confused while looking around the bathroom.
"Pheebs... Where did you teleport us to?"
"... The office?"
"Yeah... This is not my bathroom." He said each word slowly as he finally realized the situation.
"I thought it looked different, but I thought you just had it remodeled."
"With what money?"
"I don't know, how didn't you notice this sooner?!"
"I had my attention on something else."
"Awn."
She would always scrunch her nose whenever she thought something was cute, and he couldn't help himself whenever he saw it, he loved when she did that. Dante kissed her passionately until they heard footsteps around the place, and quickly pulled away from each other, coming back to reality.
"How did this happen?" The devil hunter whispered, and it took a while for him to get an answer as the redhead wondered.
"Oh, shit. I used too much of my magic, I forgot it limits my teleportation distance." She widened her eyes as she finally reached that conclusion. "Quick, put on your clothes." Phoebe said as she got out of the shower and got herself dressed with magic.
Dante was grabbing his clothes when she told him to wait and used some sort of spell at his clothes, he arched an eyebrow and looked at her.
"I was cleaning them! Hurry!"
The steps were getting closer with each second, so she decided to teleport them to the street as soon as the white haired man finished putting on his pants and boots.
They stared into each other's eyes and after a sigh of relief they burst out in laughter. They laughed so hard that a person opened their window to throw a bottle at them and yelled for them to shut up. However, that only made them laugh even harder.
"Shit, that was intense!" Phoebe said.
The devil hunter took a deep breath as he tried to recompose himself so he could finish getting dressed.
"So, what are our options now?" Dante asked.
"Sit and wait for my energy to restore a little."
"Well, we're still in Fortuna, at least you didn't teleport us to Nero's bathroom."
"That would've been awkward, but at least we wouldn't have to flee."
They started walking down the street, looking for a place to wait.
"We would need to flee if his girlfriend had seen us, that would definitely give her a heart attack."
"Oh, yeah, I remember you telling me about this crazy church she and Nero were in. Is she really such a prude?"
He shrugged. "It looks like it."
"Ooh, we definitely have to do it some time. It'll be hilarious." The sorceress had a mischievous grin on her face, and the devil hunter laughed. "But wait, if this church worshiped Sparda, doesn't that mean she's basically dating Jesus Christ's kid?"
"Only if you wanna offend Jesus by comparing him to Vergil." They both laughed and finally found a bench to sit down on.
Not very far from there, the other twin sat awkwardly on a couch as he felt his son staring at him. They both had been silent for hours now. Nico was there with them, pretending to help Kyrie to cook as an excuse to listen to s conversation that still hadn't happened.
Deep down, all that Vergil had ever wanted had been affection. That became pretty clear when he split himself into two beings: the human V and the demon Urizen. However, he considered that need a weakness and his stubbornness remained after becoming whole again.
A clear picture of that impasse would be V screaming at him to try some sort of communication with the boy sitting across from him, after all, he was his blood. He was family. On the other hand, Urizen wouldn't stop mocking him and urging him to leave. After all, his search for power could never end as he could always become more powerful than he already is.
Sparda had never been very affectionate towards him nor Dante, but unlike their mother, he would often compliment Vergil's behavior rather than his younger brother. Honestly, he didn't know what to do and his inner child just wanted to open a portal with Yamato and leave.
"So... Blake, huh?" Nero attempted to start a conversation. He clearly didn't know what to do.
"Did you even know who that was before reading the book?" The half demon didn't even bother to look at him while talking.
"Never needed to."
"Reading is means to achieve a sharp mind. A sharp mind is always coming up with a strategy, so, in the end, knowledge is power." He stood up and went towards the door.
"Wait, where are you going?"
"To the library."
At least there was one thing that uncle and nephew agreed on: leaving Vergil alone was too dangerous. He rose to his feet and went after his father.
"Well, I'm glad my father left me." Nico gladly said as Kyrie looked at her with an arched eyebrow.
Not being his first time in the city and since it hadn't changed at all in years, the half demon already knew his way to the library. His son silently followed him, not knowing what to think and even less what to say.
The man started looking through the books, every now and then mumbling something about that particular author or work being good, and practically throwing it in Nero's hands.
"Are you picking up books for you or for me?" The boy decided to ask as the pile he carried between his hands reached about 15 units.
"For you, of course."
"I can't read all of these in such a short notice!"
"You're not only reading, you'll be also writing a paper about each one of them."
The young devil hunter burst out in laughter. "I didn't know you had a sense of humor."
"I don't. I leave that for fools like Dante."
All signs of happiness disappeared from his son's face while he added another book to the pile.
"I'm starting to regret my life's decisions." He sighed. "Look, Kyrie is gonna be really mad if we get late for dinner."
"Who's Kyrie?"
"My... girlfriend. I introduced the two of you."
"I thought the brunette was your girlfriend."
"Nico?!" Nero's expression changed from surprise to disgust. "Hell, not even in a hundred years!"
"Good, I don't like her, she's too loud."
The son held back the urge to smash his own head against a wall.
Meanwhile, Phoebe and Dante were finally back at the original Devil May Cry, with the woman filling him in on the situation of the demonic building while they laid in bed.
"I thought everyone plotted to bring me back because they missed me!" He playfully pretended to be offended.
"Anyway, Trish and I went there to investigate. It reacted the same way it had with Nero when she touched it. But when I used demonic magic, it opened."
He furrowed his eyebrows. "Why did it work for you but not for her?"
"Because it wasn't recognizing me, Dante, it was recognizing your power." She noticed he still seemed confused. "You'll understand in a few seconds. When the wall opened, I saw something inside..."
"Lemme guess: a fucking big demon."
"Not any demon." She stopped talking for a few seconds, wondering how to best deliver that news. "It was your father."
Phoebe had known the devil hunter for years, practically half their lives, and for that reason she knew very well that there were very little reasons that would make him turn pale. Like when she made an April's fools prank about being pregnant – she admits that one was a little too far.
But now she had gotten extremely worried, all blood seemed to had left Dante's face and his entire body had turned stiff. He stood there, paralyzed, until his brain finished processing the information. The sorceress held one of his hands and caressed its back with her thumb trying to soothe him.
If his relationship with his mother was the best he could've asked for, the one he had with his father was the complete opposite. There wasn't a thing in this world that he could do that would get Sparda's approval. For years he had rejected his demonic side thanks to him.
When he finally understood the situation, his eyes changed to his demonic ones and he quickly stood up and started pacing around the room.
"Dante, it's okay."
"First that bastard disappears and in the end he actually survived?!" His voice was also the deep, demonic one.
Phoebe stood up and hugged him from behind, leaning her cheek against his back. He stopped pacing and she kept reassuring him until the half demon finally calmed down.
"Sorry." He said so quietly that she only managed to listen because was clinging to him.
"It's fine. Look, it could be just a corrupted memory that materialized."
"Or could be him corrupted just like Vergil was Nelo Angelo."
"Let's take one step at a time, okay? You need to rest before heading down there anyway."
"Who else knows about that?"
"About the structure, everyone. About Sparda, only Trish and I."
"Good." Dante unwrapped her arms from his body and turned around to kiss the top of her head. "Tomorrow I will go there to face dad dearest, then."
"Wait, you're planning on going alone?!"
"This is too much for Nero and... Shit, there's also Vergil that may decide to do something stupid and I planned to keep an eye on him.. he definitely can't know about this because he'll definitely go back to the whole I need power thing and..." He was interrupted by an index finger against his lips.
"One step at a time. Go back to bed."
The white haired man did as she told him and they both went back to bed. However, he soon noticed there was something weird about how the sorceress had fallen asleep.
"Pheebs, when was the last time you really slept?"
"This is sleeping."
He couldn't see her astral form floating above her body with her legs crossed, but he could listen to her like an echo on his head.
"Babe..."
"I'm just trying not to have a nightmare."
"Go back to your body."
Phoebe's consciousness returned to her body and she rolled her eyes and sighed.
"You do know if I have a nightmare, I might wake up pointing one of your guns at you."
"I'll take my chances."
Dante did have a point, after months of not sleeping in the right way, she was practically comatose on that night. Her mind needed that rest more than anything else.
On the following day, the half demon woke up first and silently got up, getting ready to go all the way to the demonic tower. The redhead was so tired she wouldn't even hear him. His plans of sneaking out silent, however, were stopped by Lady and Trish waiting on the lower floor. They were both sitting on the desk and noticed something different on his face.
"You shaved." The brunette started.
"And got back to your old haircut." The demoness added.
"They're on again, pay me up." She stretched her hand but the blonde slapped on it as she furrowed her eyebrows.
"That doesn't prove anything."
"Good morning, ladies! Nice seeing you too." He mockingly smiled as he opened his arms.
"There's something we need to discuss." The human devil huntress crossed her arms.
"About the demonic tower. Pheebs already filled me in."
"Just for scientific purposes, where were you exactly when she told you that?" Trish was determined to not lose that bet.
"In a room." He grinned as the blonde rolled her eyes.
"So, are we leaving already?" The brunette asked.
"I'm sorry, girls, this is a family issue, which means you sit this one out." Dante pointed at the couch and tried to make a leave, but Phoebe showed up in front of him and cleared her throat. She was wearing one of his black shirts.
"Pay. Me. Up." Lady whispered and Trish angrily placed some dollar bills in her hand.
"Sit down." The sorceress growled at him.
"Hey, babe, has someone already told you look absolutely stunning today?"
"No, but I'm pretty sure someone you'll give the same compliment to your corpse when I kill you."
"Look, I underestimated Vergil last time and those two ended up inside demons completely naked to serve as battery."
"And you were in a coma for a month." The blonde demoness argued.
The redhead tilted her head to the side. "You don't say."
"If Vergil was that powerful, can you imagine what's Sparda is like, even if it's just a part of him?" She continued.
"Wait, wait. Sparda!?" The human widened her mismatched eyes.
"Yeah, Sparda's inside that tower." She had to use her index finger on the other woman's jaw to close it as it became agape with the answer.
Dante opened his mouth to speak again, but was interrupted by the sound of the phone ringing. He went behind the back and answered it.
"Devil May Cry."
"Please tell me you're mistaken and he's not my father." It was Nero on the other side, whispering.
He chuckled. "I'm sorry, kid, this is the cold, hard truth. Look, we're pretty busy right now."
"Is this about the demon tower?"
He heard his brother's voice on the other end but couldn't understand a word. The devil hunter closed his eyes and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Nero, shut up, don't tell him anything!"
"Hey! Where are you going?!" The boy yelled and there was a pause on the call. "Shit, Dante, he opened a portal and left!"
The man took a deep breath and violently hung up the phone.
"Guess what? My nephew is dumb and my dumbass brother is gonna get there first."
"Well, guess we're all going, then!" Trish gleefully announced.
"Sparda thinks you're Eva, who knows what he's gonna do to you, especially if he finds out you're not actually her." Phoebe said.
"What if you guys need a distraction or a bait?"
"You're out of line, but you're right."
Dante had facepalmed at some point after the call and his hand was still on his face.
"Just teleport us, Pheebs, I don't wanna be far behind Vergil." He muttered.
"I think we'll just meet you guys there." Lady said as she dragged the demoness outside. She would always throw up a lot after being teleported.
The sorceress got dressed up with magic and grabbed the devil hunter's hand to teleport them to the place. Vergil already stood up in front of the tower, he turned his head to stare at his twin with the corner of his eyes. The building now seemed to be completed, being so tall it was almost impossible to see its top from the ground.
"You can't crash into other people's parties like this!" Dante approached his older brother with his arms wide open and had a mocking grin on his face until he took a good look at the tower. "Is that...?"
"A copy of Temen-ni-gru."
Although they were too busy to notice, Phoebe had teleported away.
"A trip down memory lane, huh?"
"Stay out of this, Dante." He growled.
"Do you know what's in there?"
"I can feel it."
"Wanna fight over the honor of punching father in the face, then?"
"Are the two of you seriously at it again?" Nero showed up between them, however, he had to raise a palm in a wait sign so he could turn his head to the side and puke.
The legendary devil hunter stared at the redhead with furrowed eyebrows, but only receive a shrug as response.
"My point is, whatever's inside is strong as hell, so let's do this together."
"Not a whatever, it's actually your grandfather." Phoebe pointed out.
"What?"
"Yeah."
Vergil grew tired of talking and approached the fake Temen-ni-gru, he unsheathed the Yamato and the demons that made the walls started to move to open a path to him. There was no sign of life on that level.
"Father's at the top. How about this: whoever reaches him first, wins." He teased his younger brother, who grinned in response.
"As long as you don't go crying to him when you lose."
The walls closed again with the older son of Sparda inside. Phoebe approached the devil hunter and asked:
"What are the odds of him trying to kill you if he finds some sort of power in there?"
"Fifty-fifty."
"I'm gonna keep an eye on him."
Dante grabbed her arm and stared deeply into her eyes. "Be careful."
"Relax, he won't even know I'm here."
"Shit, all of my devil breakers are with Nico!" The young boy realized.
"All of your what?" His uncle asked with an arched eyebrow.
"My devil breakers, the powerful prosthetics!"
"You do know your arm is back, right?"
Nero rolled his eyes. "Of course I know, but Nico modified them so I could keep using them like a glove."
Phoebe placed her palm on Dante's chest. "You go on ahead, I'll help the kid." They each turned to opposite directions and she approached the white haired boy. "Where's Nico right now?"
"On her way here."
"Give me a minute."
She teleported to the inside of the RV, which Nico drove at maximum speed. The brunette saw her reflection on the mirror and her expression immediately turned to panic.
"For the love of God, please don't teleport me!"
"Geez, you people get too traumatized by that." She crossed her arms over her chest. "Nero needs one of those hand thingies."
"A handjob?! Tell that maniac to ask Kyrie!"
"What? No! That thing that it's also a weapon... Unless there's one that actually..." The sorceress made the jerking off gesture.
Nico stared into her eyes for a few seconds before she had her eyes back on the road. "You didn't hear it from me. They're in the back, you can grab some and bring them to him."
"How do I know which ones to grab?"
"Just grab one of each!"
Phoebe did as she said and teleported back to Nero, handing him a bunch of devil breakers.
"Thanks, that'll be enough for now."
"For now?!"
"Those break pretty easily, okay?!"
"Whatever, let's go." The redhead slapped his shoulder with the back of her hand as he equipped one of the devil breakers.
She repeated the process of opening the wall and they got inside.
