Chapter 1
The sun rose above the horizon. It crept over the quiet town of Adventure Bay. It spread and soon rose up to the lookout. It pierced through the blinds of Ryder's bedroom and landed on his face, warming it up.
But Ryder didn't wake up, he didn't want to. He knew he could be doing something productive, like starting work early and answering some emergency calls or fixing some breakfast for himself and the pups.
Well, they really weren't pups anymore. It had been six years since Ryder had first established the Paw Patrol, all of them had grown so much. Ryder was sixteen now and the pups were now dogs at 7 years old or around it. They had moved out of the old missions like making pizza towers or helping Cap'n Turbot find his keys, to saving people from forest fires, rescuing hostages, and busting illegal operations, and moved from just helping out Adventure Bay to helping the five cities around it: Meadow City, Foggy Bottom, Queenview, Mt. Capo, and Swamptown.
The lookout had grown too. All the pups had their own rooms below the lookout. The dogs' used-to-be pup-houses had now turned into their beds. The lookout had more rooms below the surface too.
All the pups now lived at the lookout. Tuck, Ella, Rex, Everest, and Tracker lived with everyone else. Tuck and Ella had become the observation team, since The Lady Bird was caught and locked away for good, the two would also be backups in case someone else needed help.
But anyway, the sunlight was now filling the room, urging Ryder to wake up. He could either A) suck it up and start the day or B) shut the sunlight out and fall asleep for a couple more hours. The choice was clear. Ryder rose out of bed, put his hand on his nightstand, and took a sip of water. And pushed the button on his cup. The blinds suddenly turned to something like steel doors. It was now almost pitch black in the room. Ryder laid back down and fell asleep.
It felt like a minute, as soon as Ryder dozed off he was up again. This time to the sound of barking. He knew that there was no shutting it off. This time Ryder rose out of bed for real. He pressed the button on his cup and finally let the sunlight flow in. It momentarily blinded him, he squinted down and saw his beloved dogs playing around.
Chase was doing his usual morning drills at the obstacle course. Zuma, Marshall, Everest, and Rocky were playing tug of war. Ryder could hear Tracker, Rubble, and Rex doing Pup Pup Boogie downstairs in the main living room. And Skye, Ella, and Tuck were laying down beside a tree. The tug a war crew was in a fierce battle
"C'mon Dude we can win this," Zuma said through his clenched teeth on the rope.
"I wouldn't bet on it," Everest responded.
Zuma and Rocky pulled and pulled, but it looked like Everest and Marshall were going to win. Marshall tugged but tripped on his tail, and landed with a thump. He quickly tried to get back up but the break was just what Zuma and Rocky needed. The two pulled with all their might and caused Marshall and Everest to cross the line drawn in the dirt. The two tumbled onto each other and laughed.
"Oops sorry Eve," Marshall apologized.
"It's fine my clumsy dally," Everest said, giving him a lick on his face.
It warmed Ryder's heart to see his dogs having fun, most people would be broken and depressed if they did the kind of work Ryder and the pups did.
Ryder loved his pups they were some of the best things in his life, he wouldn't give them up for anything and he would always protect them.
Chase was focused, locked in on his goal. He did some quick footwork and easily passed the tires on the ground. The German Shepard crouched down to get past the barbed wire above him. Each movement brought up dust, getting all over his fur. After getting past that obstacle next was the wall.
He jumped up and latched his paw on the first foothold. Chase then went on a speed run and did them faster and faster inching closer to the top. He tried to be careful but his paw slipped. Chase was about a couple of feet away from the top. He was hanging on from one foot.
Usually, in the movies, everyone is watching, as the main character is hanging on for dear life. The police and firefighters would start to run in and lay a mat down for the character to land on. But this wasn't a movie, there was no mat, no one to help him, it was all Chase. He used his front leg to propel him up a little. Enough for him to clamp his jaws on the next foothold. Next, he used his back legs and launched himself into a flip. He let go of the foothold and landed at the top of the wall.
The accomplishment was met with barks and howls from his friends.
"Nice one Chase," Marshall congratulated.
"Thanks, bud," Chase responded.
The whole thing was an in-the-moment thing. Chase had learned to be quick on his feet and in his thinking. It was like a reflex for him. Chase had never tried to do the flip thing before. He just had a goal and reached it.
But the overarching goal was still standing out. He still had to finish the course. There was one more obstacle standing in his way. The fifteen-foot jump. No one had ever made it. Luckily there was a net at the bottom to catch them. But Chase was determined.
Chase started at a line drawn. There was an eight-meter platform to get a running start. He looked where he was trying to get to. He noticed that the air was still. All eyes were on him.
He started to run.
7 meters till jump, his paws thumped the platform.
6 meters till jump, the wind was picking up.
5 meters till jump, started to pick up speed.
4 meters till jump, faster speed.
3 meters till jump, his fur ruffling.
2 meters till jump, eyes locked on target.
1 meter till jump, ready.
As the end of the platform was near Chase jumped. The air was still, silence. Chase was getting closer and closer. He was almost there when something caught his nose. It smelled like a cat.
Oh No, Chase thought, he knew what was coming. He felt a tickle in his nose. It kept building up then.
ACHOO!
Chase's speed was lost and he was starting to fall. The ground was getting closer, he closed his eyes and braced for impact. Until he hit it. The net caught him but he was falling so hard that his mouth still his the dirt. He tasted metal in his mouth as the blood filled his mouth.
"Chase!" he heard Skye shout. He opened his eyes and saw Skye and Marshall running toward him.
"Are you okay old bud?" Marshall asked.
"Yeah I'm good," Chase replied getting up. His mouth was tingling and a bit of blood was dripping down from his lip.
"I think we should clean this up a bit," Marshall advised. He ran inside, stumbling a few times, then came back with a wet towel. He placed it on Chase's lip and told him to keep it there for a while. After he made sure Chase was okay he engaged in a game of tag with Rocky, Tracker, Rex, and Everest.
"It was a good try," Rubble said trotting over to Chase, "You were almost there."
"Might I ask what made you sneeze?" Tuck inquired.
"Smelled some cat," Chase answered.
"Must have been that one," Zuma said, pointing to a man holding his cat in his arms. Strands of the cat's fur came floating upon the breeze and into Chase's nose.
He gave another great big, ACHOO!
"Well, maybe next time you try that jump we should do a cat check," Skye suggested," so you don't get hurt again."
She nuzzled him with her muzzle and licked him on the cheek.
Chase and Skye had been boyfriend and girlfriend for 3 years, but finally last year Chase had enough courage to pop the question on Skye. She had said 'yes' and for the first time in his life, he was knocked down by Skye. They planned the wedding and then had it. It was one of the happiest days of Chase's life. Since then the two had been happily married.
"Yeah, pups!" a voice greeted from the entrance to the Lookout. It was Ryder dressed in his emergency wear. He looked at Chase, "Whoa what happened to you, Chase?"
"Just fell a bit Ryder Sir," Chase responded," But Marshall says that I will be just fine."
"Well that's good to hear," Ryder said. He gave Chase a scratch behind the ears. Suddenly Ryder's phone rang, he quickly picked it up and headed inside.
"Paw Patrol," he answered, "Ryder speaking," The door closed and the dogs could no longer hear Ryder.
"Guess it's time to get to work," Rubble declared. Then a second later all of their pup tags went off.
"Paw Patrol to the lookout!" Ryder's voice rang.
"Ryder needs us!" they said. Chase pressed a button on the ground and the obstacle course sunk into the ground and was covered up by some large plates covered with grass.
The dogs started to run to the lookout. Rex gave Marshall a last "Tag you're it!" and ran to the elevator. Marshall started to run after the Bernese Mountain Dog.
He was getting almost close enough to tag him, "Taaaaaaaagggggg," Marshall said slowly almost grazing Rex's fur. But Marshall being Marshall tripped over the raised part of the entrance.
Marshall yelped in surprise and fell onto a skateboard that was laying around him. The dalmatian started to zigzag all around in the lobby. Everyone was in the elevator.
"Watch out!" Marshall called out as he headed toward the elevator. But it was too late, the dally smashed into everyone.
"Think I can tag along," Marshall quipped. The elevator erupted in giggles. The dogs got up. They were used to it. Every time they got in the elevator Marshall would trip on something and cause everyone to fall down. It was one of the things to always look forward to.
The elevator doors closed and started upwards. It made a stop at about the middle of the lookout. Robotic arms came and put the dogs' gear and uniforms on. Everyone's uniforms had gotten an upgrade. They no longer wear the vest they did when they were puppies but now, thanks to Rocky and Ryder, they had more sophisticated looks. Then the elevator ascended to the top of the lookout. The doors opened with a ding and all the pups jumped out. They quickly got into their positions.
"Ready for action Ryder sir," Chase said.
"Thanks for coming pups," Ryder thanked.
He pressed a button on his pup pad and a hologram-like picture appeared in front of the dogs.
"We just got a call in Meadow City," Ryder began, "There has been a break-in, from what I can tell there are at least 4 children in a room upstairs, while the adult is downstairs." The hologram zoomed out and showed the pups what the house could look like with the locations of the people. "The kid who called us said that the robber was downstairs but would probably head for the master bedroom where all the valuables are." The hologram then lined the path of where the robber might go. Ryder pressed another button on the pad and the hologram faded away.
"For this mission I need Chase," Ryder said as Chase's pup tag logo appeared, "You're in charge of stopping the robber and catching him."
"These paws uphold the laws," Chase barked.
"Next I'll need Tuck and Ella," Ryder said, the twins' pup tag logos appeared, "You help Chase and follow his orders." He swiped their pup tag logos on Chase's typed commands on the pad.
"Tuck and Ella are on the case with Chase," the golden retrievers chimed in unison, their usual bright teal uniforms turned into a dark blue.
"Finally I'll need EMT Marshall," Ryder announced as the fire pup tag appeared on screen, "I need you to make sure everyone is all right and no one is hurt."
"I'm ready for a ruff-ruff rescue," Marshall said.
"All right Paw Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder announced. He ran and slid down on a pole. Chase ran to the slide followed closely by Tuck and Ella, he stopped in front of the slide as a sensor scanned him to collect his vehicle for him. Then Chase slid down the slide. He landed in his vehicle.
"Ruff car," he said. The vehicle became a police car around him. Tuck and Ella came down the slide and landed in the seats behind Chase. The roof closed and Chase started the engine. Ryder was on his ATV and riding ahead. Marshall was following. Chase started the car and was off along with them.
Meadow City was about 10 minutes away on the regular road-going about 60 mph but the Paw Patrol didn't go that way. They took a series of back alleys and went as fast as their cars could take them.
After about two minutes they popped out on a neighborhood street. Ryder stopped his ATV in front of the second house on the right.
"This is the place," Ryder said. Chase squinted and could see the door slightly open.
"Tuck, Ella," Chase whispered, "You guys go scan the house so we can see what we're dealing with."
The two hopped out of the car and started to circle the house. After a minute the two came back around to Marshall, Ryder and Chase.
Ella pulled a tablet out of her pup pack.
"From what we can tell the thief has moved to the master bedroom," Ella stated," The dad is unconscious in the living area."
"How did they enter the house?" Chase asked.
"Well we think that they broke through the window in the back of the house where the keys were sitting on a counter," Tuck said, "They then proceeded to the front door where they opened it with the keys."
"Ok so Marshall check out the dad and make sure he is ok," Ryder instructed, " Chase, Tuck, and Ella you guys stopped this thief."
"On it Ryder." They replied.
The dogs crept up to the front of the house and pushed the door open
Marshall went into the living room to check on the man.
Chase and the twins headed to the stairs. As he placed his paws on the stairs they let out a soft creak. The dogs waited there for a second then continued to move. When they reached the top Chase heard whimpering coming from a room to the left and the sound of shuffling in the one to the left.
Chase signaled for Tuck and Ella to go to the left, they nodded and quietly went off. When they were gone Chase made his way over to the bed room where the noises came from. He peeked through the door and saw a tall man pulling open draws and stuffing jewelry and money in his pockets.
"Ruff Taser," Chase quietly barked. A taser gun popped out of his pup pack. The German Shepherd inched closer and closer. Then about a foot away from the door, he jumped in.
"Hands in the air!" Chase yelled.
The robber quickly put his hands up and turned around. But one look at Chase, he laughed and put his hands down. Then went back to what he was doing.
"I said hands in the air!" Chase repeated.
"Yeah yeah I heard you," the robber said in a bored voice, not turning around," I'm just not going to follow the orders of a dog."
"I am a police officer," Chase stated, raising his taser.
"Yeah right," the robber taunted, "Why don't you be a good dog and put the taser down."
"I'm warning you," Chase said, "this is your last chance." Creeping closer to the thief.
But the guy just ignored Chase.
Chase started to count down, "3, 2, 1." But he was still ignored, "Ruff fire!" The taser went off and hit the guy's leg. He yelled in pain and fell down. The taser was on stun mode, so it wouldn't last long.
Suddenly the robber looked at the German Shepard with hate in his eyes, "Oh you just made a big mistake little puppy."
The man lunged at Chase and dug his claws into Chase's front leg. Chase let out a howl. He twisted out of the man's grasp and ran to a corner. He then set his taser to paralyze. The man got up and made his way to Chase.
"Ruff Fire!" Chase barked. The robber fell to the ground and was unable to move.
"Yeah fleabag what did you do to me!" he yelled.
"Don't worry it will wear off in about an hour," Chase reassured, "But by that time you'll be behind bars."
The robber was trying to move but couldn't, "You'll pay for this!"
"Yeah, that's what they all say," Chase remarked as he dug into the robber's pockets and retrieved the stolen items. Chase looked back at the robber and saw him looking under the bed.
"No nothings there!" the robber said. But Chase had already looked and saw a black duffel bag. He dragged it out and saw it stuffed with more valuables.
"Nothing there huh," Chase said.
The robber sighed in defeat.
"It's clear!'" Chase yelled down the hall. Ella and Tuck walked in with three kids trailing them and Ella clutched a baby gently in her mouth. The oldest looked like he was at least 9 and looked down at the robber.
The middle child, probably 5, was frantically asking where their dad was. And the youngest one of maybe 3, was petting Tuck and hanging on him.
"Good job Chase!" Tuck congratulated.
"Thanks," Chase accepted, "Easy one didn't have a weapon on him."
"But he looks like he got you," Ella said with a muffled voice, pointing at Chase's arm.
"I'll have Marshall look at it," Chase brushed off.
The dogs lead the kids downstairs where their dad was sitting on the couch with a bandage on his head. Marshall sitting beside him. The kids embraced their dad, while the police came and took the thief. Ryder told them that they were good pups and gave them some treats. Marshall called one of his doctor friends and told him to check in on the dad everyone in a while. The dogs started to pack up their things.
But they didn't notice a shadow watching them from the bushes.
Ok, this chapter was longer than I expected I wanted to have it shorter but also cramp stuff in any way hope you liked it anyway.
