"Where is Rev when you need him?" Beka muttered under her breath. She wasn't real good at caring for sick people. Yes, it was true that Harper got sick a lot and while she was always there to comfort him as best she could the medical stuff was left to Rev. Or Vexpag, when he had been here. And Trance, when she signed on as his replacement.
But now both Rev and Harper were gone. Rev was on a Wayist retreat and Harper was surfing on Infinity Atoll. Which meant that she was the only one here to deal with Trance's flu? And it wasn't fun.
"Beka!"
"Yes, Trance. What is it?"
Trance pointed to the bucket on the side of the bed. It was filled with vomit. "I'll take care of it. Don't worry." She had her happy face on and didn't grimace until she was out of Trance's sight. Then she hurriedly disposed of the disgusting mess. That wasn't the end of it, though. She still had to scrub out the bucket, which she managed to do without vomiting herself.
Once she was done with that, she plopped down on her bunk to rest. It was exhausting trying to care for someone with the flu. Hopefully Trance would be over it soon.
After a few minutes, Beka got up and went to check on Trance. She had her head under her pillow and was clutching it for dear life. "What's wrong?"
"My head hurts so bad that it feels like it's going to explode. And I wish it would. Maybe then it would stop hurting. But I doubt it."
"I'm sorry. The aspirin didn't help." It was a lame question but Beka was out of her element here.
"No duh. If it helped I wouldn't be saying it hurt, now would I?"
True. And this was very unlike Trance. She never complained about anything; her disposition was always sunny. She was really sick and miserable to be acting this way. Beka wished she could make her better. But she couldn't. All she could do was do the best she could and continue doing what she could, even if it wasn't much.
"I'm sorry, Trance. I hope you'll get over this soon. Why don't you try to sleep? I'll make it dark in here."
"I won't be able to but O.K." So Beka left her in a darkened room. Eventually, Trance did sleep, if only from exhaustion. So it wasn't much but it was something.
Beka wasn't sure how long this would last. You couldn't judge by a typical human bout with the flu because Trance wasn't human. But eventually it would go away; it had too.
"Beka!" And she hurried back. This time Trance needed her sheets changed and help to get to the bathroom. So Beka helped. Because as hard as this was on her, it was harder on Trance, being the one who was sick.
"Will Trance get better before the guys get back or will she still be sick when they do? All I know is I'm not sure how much I can take of this."
"Beka"
"Rev, is that you?'
"Yes." The monk stepped into view.
"I'm so glad you're back. Trance has the flu. I've been trying my best to care for her but it's not really my forte."
Rev grinned. That was an understatement. "It's all right, Rebekah. I'm here now. I'll take over."
And he did, much to her relief. And when Trance got better everyone was happy.
The End.
