Chapter 2 - Pinned

I sit silently, waiting outside in anticipation. She should be out anytime now….She always goes on walks so if I just wait here she'll come to me at some point. Of course I could just go inside and do what needs to be done, but I rather play around with her for a bit.

"Here she comes!" I think to myself when I hear the door close.

I smile wickedly as I hide behind a tree. I wonder if she saw me. I let my shadows become visible. I might as well play around with her before I kill her.

I quickly dash out from behind the tree, past her vision and behind another tree. I know she saw it when I hear a her jump back and then scold herself, calling herself stupid.

I smile when she still walks deeper into the forest, to her favorite spot to read. She goes there every time she comes outside, so it's easy to follow her. Being completely silent I follow her to the great oak and I watch her sit down at the huge trees base contentedly.

Coming up in front of her I expect her to scream, but instead she turns around to look at a bunny that was stepping on leaves, and making noise.

She insults herself again for being so paranoid and then she turns around.

I smile wickedly when she screams again because she caught another glimpse of me.

I reveal myself and start walking towards her, but she doesn't run. Perhaps she still thinks I'm not real.

I pull out my poisoned dagger and she screams again. I love how she screams. It's like music to my ears.

She jumps up and starts running for her life. I give her a second to collect her thoughts and then I pounce onto her pinning her to the ground. I revel in her scream of pure, unbridled fear, and then she passes out.

Wow, this job is a lot easier than I thought it would be.

The person who hired me made it out like she was going to be dangerous, or at least more than just this. I mean, this is an Angel after all, so why is she so why is she so pitiful?

Anyways, back to business. I stand up, and dust myself off. She's out cold. Guess I hit her harder than I thought. Oh well, not like I expect a real fight out of something so weak.

I pull out my dagger, and look at it for a moment. With just one swipe, I could end her life, and no one would ever know. I kneel down on the ground next to the girl and sigh. I clench my dagger in my hand tightly, and hold it above her neck.

"Better get this over with," I tell myself with a sigh.

I watch the slow rise and fall of her chest as she breathes in her unaware, unconscious state. "Pull yourself together," I think to myself, as my hand seems to be frozen in its place.

I close my eyes tightly, and stand up. I take in a deep breath, and take a few steps away from the girl.

"Come on," I say in an aggravated tone "You do this all the time, so what makes this any different?"

I think back to last night for a moment. I was supposed to kill her then to. For some reason, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I just stood there, and watched her father beat her till she passed out. Something about that scene just made me click, and I couldn't kill her. The way she played there unconscious, with blood dripping from her cheek.

"Am I going soft?" I ask myself internally, while looking down at my hand, still clenched around the dagger.

I shake my head, and remember something my employer told me. He said she has a mark. Of course I didn't believe him, but I don't care as long as I get paid.

"But there's no harm in looking if I'm just going to kill her," I muse as I walk over to her head.

I kneel down again, and grab her sleeve. I pull it up, and smirk.

"You really are something," I say quietly looking at her shoulder. That guy really wasn't lying, she's marked. Then that means...

Suddenly, I drop my smile, and back up. S***.
