Two schools, both alike in dignity: one of Magic and the other of Technology.
Each of a society enslaved by the other in different ways.
The people of fantasy forced to work the mines, recovering gemstones to build the technology of the people of science. Insodoing they destroy their own bodies.
The people of science forced to do useless busywork and keep up with the Joneses on literal threat of imprisonment and death, being constantly monitored and micromanaged on all sides while being forced to pretend otherwise. Insodoing they destroy their own souls.
This method is used to control what the people of science are allowed to believe, for if they believe something different than their peers their faces and bodies betray it and they are punished. Those who refuse to punish them are also punished.
Since magic is fueled by belief and willpower, controlling the beliefs of the people of science allows them to be easily manipulated by the people of fantasy, so their spells can be cast undetected.
Those of the people of science say that with more knowledge you can use the love you already have more efficiently, so you don't have to grow your love as much to attain the same results.
Those of the people of fantasy say that with more love you can motivate yourself more and overcome more obstacles, so you don't need as much knowledge to attain the same results.
Who are these two peoples? They are the peoples of overconfidence and complacency.
One ate from the fruit of the tree of knowledge, decided they had enough knowledge and so stopped growing their knowledge.
The other ate from the fruit of the tree of life, decided they had enough life and so stopped growing their life. (Life is the product and source of love, and in many ways simply IS love made manifest.)
In their overconfidence they rushed on ahead, heedless of the dangers and forgetting to steer. Then they forgot how to steer because they were out of practice at it.
In their complacency they lost their momentum and so became stuck in their complacency. For it is much harder to move forward when you are no longer moving.
And from these two societies were born two schools, both alike in dignity: one of magic and the other of technology. From each a student is given to the other:
One who grew his scientific and technical knowledge enough to trick even experienced mages into believing he has magic.
The other who grew her magical powers enough to fool the scientists and technologists into believing everything she does is by science and technology alone.
But magic works by belief and willpower. So if the mages believe you have magic, does that not mean you have magic by definition? Or are you only reflecting their own magic back at them? Does it depend on whether you believe you yourself have magic of your own or not?
And science and technology work by testing, observation and application. First you see, THEN you act upon what you see. But if you believe that your mere sight can also cause actions, then perhaps you are merely more observant, conducting more experimental tests in rapid succession, and applying the results in little ways every so often without being consciously aware of it?
Do you just have more powerful magic than the mages? Or do you just have more advanced science and technology than the scientists and technologists? Or perhaps both? Or neither?
All things begin where opposites meet.
