Edgar lunged.
"Look out!" screamed Olive as they all dived for cover and Edgar ploughed into the ground.
Tasting dirt, he raised his monstrous head and spat out the massive chunk of soil in his mouth before returning his attention to the enemies that lay before him.
Mandy and Lucinda hovered high and on either side of him before firing a barrage of magic at Edgar, distracting him long enough for the Ogres and Giants to rush at him en masse.
They latched onto Edgar, the muscles in their mighty arms burning in protest, only to be bucked off when he flexed his serpentine body.
Having already exhausted themselves from escaping the Red Guard just now, the Giants and Ogres lay groaning in pain where they landed, unlikely to rejoin the fight anytime soon.
Areida had left them much earlier.
Being the only one who knew how to control Dragons, she's likely halfway to Ayorthia by now, returning the beasts back to their native habitat.
Mandy and Lucinda wished that she'd stuck around.
They could use some extra firepower right now...
Having freed himself, Edgar found himself peppered by a frantic succession of magic blasts descending on him from above.
He angled his monstrous reptilian head upwards at the two Fairies circling him overhead, taking potshot after potshot from their high altitude perch.
Edgar whipped his tail in their direction, unleashing a volley of venomous spines.
"Mandy, look out!" screamed Lucinda.
She nose-dived towards the smaller Fairy, swiftly shoving her out of the way.
Then, Lucinda felt a single soft thump, and her stomach stung badly.
A quick glance downwards confirmed that several small spines had embedded themselves in her flat abdomen.
The venom had already entered her bloodstream, her wingbeats weakening as she began to lose consciousness.
Soon, Lucinda Perriweather stopped fluttering and plummeted towards the ground.
Mandy swooped in, hooking her arms under Lucinda's armpits.
"I got you!" she grunted.
Although slender and trim, Lucinda's greater physical stature meant that Mandy had to strain, summoning all of the strength in her wings in order to support the former's weight.
She set Lucinda down as gently as she could.
Slannen (all the other Elves had fled back to the forest once they teleported out of Lamia) and Benny rushed over and examined the spine sticking out of her middle.
"Keep pressure on that wound!" shouted Benny, as Slannen planted both hands on the statuesque Fairy's midriff.
Mandy wanted to remove the spine, but her boyfriend stopped her.
"Don't! We pluck that thing out now and we might lose her!
For now, all she could do was apply pressure on Lucinda's abdomen, and hope that the four of them won't wind up as dinner.
Olga, Hattie, and Olive stood bravely beside Char's men, ready to fight the beast but unsure if they'd even be able to walk out of this situation alive.
Char stood behind them, and Ella beside him.
Looming over them all, Edgar was about to strike... when he suddenly stopped.
He seemed to be in pain, writhing and twisting and fidgeting.
Ella, Char, and all their companions stared in confusion.
What was going on?
"It's Heston!" Ella suddenly spoke up. "He's rebelling against Edgar!"
Olga had an idea. "If we can get him to break free somehow... "
"We'd finally stop him!" exclaimed Olive.
She was met by dozens of surprised stares.
"Can't I have good ideas?"
"Let me do this," Char declared, about to step forward.
"Char, no!" Ella cried in protest.
"Ella, I know Heston and my uncle better than anyone here," he insisted. "If anyone can get through to him, it's me."
After boldly marching forward a few steps, Char gently lay his sword at his feet.
Edgar raised a scaly brow, unsure of what to make of this gesture.
"Heston," Char began. "I understand that you're eternally grateful to my uncle, ever since he took you in after rescuing you from that circus."
His words appeared to be reaching the Heston in Edgar, as he flinched back a few yards.
"But can't you see that what he's doing is for his own selfish gain? He doesn't care about you, even after everything you've done for him. Uncle Edgar only wanted power and used you to get it. You're nothing but a tool to him! An object!"
Heston struggled in the empty void, exerting himself harder than he'd ever done before.
"Heston, what are you doing?" boomed Edgar's omnipresent voice. "Obey me, you treacherous snake!"
Heston closed his reptilian eyes.
"I'd say the same... "
And reopened them.
"But about you!"
Edgar tossed his gigantic head backwards and let out a bloodcurdling shriek that made Ella, Char, and all the others cover their ears and double over.
Just before anyone could be rendered deaf, the noise died away and Edgar collapsed.
He landed on the ground with a thud.
Everybody stood up and walked over, standing in a circle around the unconscious Edgar.
His great, scaly body twitched, then began to shrink.
As it did so, his form altered and shifted until he reverted to his frail, pitiful human self.
Then, Edgar threw up, ejecting a very traumatised Heston coated in saliva and vomit.
"Lucinda!" cried Ella, hurrying over to her unconscious Fairy Godmother.
She dropped to her knees beside Mandy, cupping Lucinda's face with both hands as tears started to well up in her eyes.
Lucinda was still breathing and a weak groan left the Fairy's mouth every now and then, but Ella had no idea how badly Lucinda was hurt.
Or even when and if she'd wake up again.
By now, Ella had let go of whatever resentment she'd held towards Lucinda for thoughtlessly giving her the Gift when she was born.
Within the past two days alone, Lucinda had turned over a new leaf, saved her life, and perhaps helped saved the entire known world from Sir Edgar's plans for conquest.
She'd already lost her mother.
Was she going to lose her Fairy Godmother too?
Olga suddenly appeared beside Ella.
The girl was so worried about Lucinda that she didn't notice her stepmother beside her.
Hattie and Olive showed up right behind Olga, who'd ordered Ella to move aside.
She examined Lucinda, her Witch abilities allowing her to monitor the unconscious Fairy's vital signs.
After a moment, she gave her diagnosis.
"Her condition's stable. She's a strong girl."
Saying so, Olga looked back over her shoulder, instructing Hattie and Olive to search for any medicinal plants nearby.
It will help stabilise Lucinda's condition, but the Fairy would still need to see a doctor soon.
Edgar's eyes snapped open, he spluttered and coughed before glaring daggers at Char's men surrounding him at swordpoint.
"Well, what are you lot waiting for?" He wheezed, turning his head and scowling at Olga a short distance away. "Finish me."
One of Char's men looked at him, deferring to him for orders. "Your Highness?"
Char drew his sword and raised it high...
Before levelling its point at Edgar's face.
"Men, arrest Sir Edgar," Char announced with power and authority in his voice. "He must be made to stand trial and answer for his crimes. Take him away."
Olga had overheard what had transpired, but before she could react, she heard...
"Lucinda's awake!" piped up Slannen.
"Oh!" exclaimed Lucinda, as she felt a pair of arms tightly wrap around her shoulders.
Between venom still inside her system and the spine lodged in her stomach, getting bear-hugged by Ella was not the way she intended to wake up right now.
"Oh, easy!" gasped Lucinda, who managed to crack a small smile.
Ella was so relieved that she burst out in tears.
Tears of joy.
As did Olga, who uncharacteristically teared up and broke down crying, joining in the embrace with her daughters.
All three of them.
And, for perhaps the first time in several years, she felt at ease at last.
Her husband had finally been avenged.
The Royal Coronation went off swimmingly.
King Char sat on his throne with a crown perched regally atop his head.
Beside him, his faithful wife, Queen Ella.
"To a nation of equals. To my good friends. And to my true love, Ella."
So, such is the story of Ella of Frell, a spunky young woman once under a spell.
lf there's one thing to learn, it's you just can't go wrong if you follow your heart and end with a song.
Don't go breaking my heart
I couldn't if I tried
Honey if I get restless
Baby you're not that kind
Don't go breaking my heart
You take the weight off of me
Honey when you knock on my door
Ooh, I gave you my key
Woo hoo
Nobody knows it
When I was down
I was your clown
Woo hoo
Nobody knows it
(Nobody knows... it)
Right from the start
I gave you my heart
Oh-oh I give you my heart
So don't go breaking my heart
I won't go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
Nobody told us
'Cause nobody showed us
Now it's up to us babe
Whoa I think we can make it
So don't misunderstand me
You put the light in my life
Oh, you put the spark to the flame
I got your heart in my sight
Woo hoo
Nobody knows it
But when I was down
I was your clown
Woo hoo
Nobody knows it
(Nobody knows... it)
Right from the start
I gave you my heart
Oh-oh
I give you my heart
Don't go breaking my heart
I won't go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
Woo hoo
Nobody knows it
(Woo hoo) When I was down
(Woo hoo) I was your clown
(Woo hoo) Right from the start
(Woo hoo) I gave you my heart
Oh-oh I give you my heart
Don't go breaking my heart
I won't go breaking your heart
(Don't go breaking my)
(Don't go breaking my)
Don't go breaking my heart
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
(Don't go breaking my)
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
(Don't go breaking my)
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
(Don't go breaking my)
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
(Don't go breaking my)
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
(Don't go breaking my)
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
(Don't go breaking my)
I won't (aaah) go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
"Good luck, Ella!" cheered Olive, joyfully standing beside her sister and mother.
King and Queen were all smiles as they warmly waved back at the cheering crowd of beloved family and close friends as their carriage galloped off towards their honeymoon.
Today, there were no monsters or tyrants or villains.
Today only had true love and a whole life of happiness ahead of them.
And wherever their new lives took them, so long as they were together, they were sure that they had nothing to worry about.
A/N
This is where the film canonically ends, but there are still some loose ends to tie up, which I'll be addressing in the next and final chapter.
