Something different for today.
While this story is more recent, it doesn't touch on anything that's happened in my other stories aside from the very beginning of "A New Home". Plus, I thought it was neat to share something from Kirby's perspective for once.
No major trigger warnings for this one (not that I can think of anyway).
It was night time, and a young Puffball was stargazing with two of his friends. One of them was a hamster with orange spots, the other was an orange creature called a Waddle Dee. There would've been a fourth in the group, but the Puffball hadn't seen him since the incident where he pinned the sun and moon against each other.
Right now, said puffball was staring at the sky with a blank expression. From what he'd been told, the puffball originally came from the sky. He came to Popstar like a white comet, and at some point he was taken in by his friend, Coo. It was only after getting food back from the king that the Puffball turned pink and started living on his own.
He wasn't the only Puffball living on Popstar of course. He knew Meta Knight, and he'd met Keeby a little while ago. But the puffball had to wonder if there were others out there that were like him. Maybe they fell into different planets and lived a life similar to his?
"What's wrong, Kirby?"
"Hm?" The puffball looked at his hamster friend and tilted his head. "Nothing's wrong, I'm just thinking about stuff."
"What kind of stuff?"
"Just...stuff."
It wasn't really a helpful answer, but the hamster decided not to press further. Kirby stayed silent for another moment before he decided to give a real answer. "Hey, Rick...you guys said I fell from the sky, right?"
"That's what Coo says, anyway," Rick told Kirby. "Why do you ask?"
"Well, what if that's where some babies come from?" Kirby asked naively. "Besides, I can't be the only one, right?"
"Er..."
"Of course they do," Waddle Dee interrupted. "Every once in a while a baby will fall from the sky, and whoever gets to them first can be their parents."
"But what if you're too young to be a parent?" Kirby asked curiously, Bandana had a puzzled look on his face.
"Well, you don't always HAVE to be the kid's parent" Rick told Kirby. "You could be an uncle, a cousin, and even a brother if you wanted."
"So if a baby fell from the sky right now...that means I could be their brother!?" Kirby asked excitedly, it was as if he had stars in his eyes.
"Why bring all this up, anyway?" Asked Waddle Dee.
"Because I know there's more people out there that are like me," Kirby said confidently. "Who's to say one of them won't come to Popstar and live with me?"
"But I thought that Puffballs liked being alone?" Waddle Dee asked naively. Kirby pouted in response. "If that were the case, I wouldn't be hanging out with you guys right now!"
"...Right."
The duo paused as they saw a shooting star in the sky. It left a white streak in the sky before vanishing.
"You know...I'll bet that's just another baby flying by," Rick teased. Kirby playfully bopped his head in response. "Yeah, well...I'm gonna wish for a little brother!"
"...You know wishes don't come true if you say 'em out loud, right?" Rick asked.
"And besides, a little brother would be a lot of work," Waddle Dee added. "Are you sure you'd be able to handle it?"
"I could handle it just fine," Kirby said confidently. "I could teach him all sorts of things, like how to eat noodles...or when to take a nap."
Rick and Waddle Dee looked at each other with faces full of concern before turning their attention to the Puffball.
"I really hope you know what you'd be getting yourself into, Kirby," Waddle Dee said quietly.
The very next day, Kirby left his house to see if his wish had come true. If Rick was right about that shooting star being a baby, then maybe it landed somewhere in Dream Land? The young Puffball headed over to the forest in order to look for it, despite the confusion of others who happened to walk by.
He searched through different bushes and different trees, but there was no little brother yet. He eventually searched through the leaves of the largest apple tree in the forest, much to the tree's annoyance. Said tree was named "Whispy Woods".
"What are you doing, Kirby?"
"Looking for my little brother," Kirby told him. "We saw a falling star last night, so I figured it that there would be a baby hiding somewhere around here."
"The only babies you'll find in there are squirrels and caterpillars," said Whispy. "Now would you please get out of my leaves?"
"Aw..." Kirby jumped out of Whispy's leaves in disappointment. "Well, do you know if there are any babies lying around nearby?" Kirby asked.
"I'm afraid not," Whispy replied. "You'll just have to look somewhere else."
Kirby huffed in disappointment. But if he couldn't find his brother here, then he had no other choice than to keep looking.
Soon, Kirby made his way over to a river. Maybe he'll find his little brother around here somewhere? But so far, all he could find here were rocks and fish.
What he DID find, though, was a certain blue penguin who sat by the river, he had a fishing rod in his hands while a couple of Waddle Dees rested under his red robe. It didn't take long for the penguin to notice Kirby.
"Hey, Kirby...did you get anything for my birthday?" The penguin teased. "It's comin' up, y'know!"
"I'm not worried about that right now, Dedede." Kirby said bluntly. "Have you seen any babies lying around anywhere?"
"The only baby I see out here is you," Dedede replied.
"I'm being serious!" Kirby said bitterly, which earned him a confused look from Dedede. "Why are you lookin' for babies, anyway? Did someone lose their kid or something?"
"I wished for a little brother last night, but I can't seem to find him anywhere!"
Once again, Dedede was confused. However, he figured he'd go along with what the Puffball was going on about. "Like I said, I didn't see any babies here besides you, but if you keep lookin' then maybe you'll run into him eventually."
"I KNOW I'll run into him, just wait!" Kirby said as he took off.
"Yep, keep tryin'!" Dedede said while turning his attention back to the water. With all that said and done, Kirby was even more determined to find his brother, even if it killed him.
It was the afternoon, and Kirby was STILL looking for his "little brother" He looked under every rock and in the branches of every tree. He made sure not to leave any stone unturned, but he wasn't able to find his "brother" despite his efforts.
Kirby let out a defeated sigh as he let himself fall to the ground. He sat there kicking his feet as a certain hamster headed towards his direction.
"Hey, Kirby!" Rick greeted. "Did your wish come true, yet?"
"...No, I haven't seen anyone, yet."
"Well, I'm sure you'll run into them, soon." Rick said optimistically.
"But what if I don't?"
"Well, then...you'll just have to find Nova again and make your wish THAT way."
"...I don't think they'll want me to make any wishes after Marx tried to butt in."
"Ah, you've got a point, there." Rick said with a paw on his chin. "Tell ya what, how about we have a sleepover later? That's always cheered you up."
Kirby thought about it for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, I guess a sleepover won't hurt."
"Great, I'll see if any of the others wanna join us, too." Rick said happily. "I'll meet you back at your house, OK?"
"OK," Kirby said as the rodent took off. Yeah, he was always happy to have a sleepover with his friends, And though he was still a little bitter about not finding his "little brother", he was sure that he'll run into him eventually.
Soon, Kirby began to head home himself. But as he did, he noticed something bright falling from the sky. A shooting star, maybe? Or maybe it was a bright comet? The biggest question, though, was why was it so visible when it was still daytime?
...Whatever it was, it was getting closer. Kirby screamed as he tried to get away from it. As the "comet" crashed, Kirby flew forward and he landed on his face.
The Puffball sat up, thankfully he wasn't too injured. But when he looked at what had crashed near him, he could see a black blob with orange orbs attached to its body. Both of its eyes were shut tightly.
"H-Hello?" Kirby called out as a way to get the blob's attention. There was no response, Kirby placed a hand over the blob and tried to nudge him. Not only was it injured by the crash-landing, but it also had a high fever. Fortunately, that meant it was still alive.
"Hey, are you all right?" Kirby asked the blob. It refused to move, but it was still breathing. Kirby started tugging at one of the orbs. "Come on, wake up!"
The blob opened its eyes, Kirby yelled as the blob tried to take off. Unfortunately, it couldn't move very far and collapsed within seconds. He was so sick and helpless. Surely, this couldn't have been the brother Kirby wished for, right? Either way it didn't matter, because he wanted to help this thing.
"I'm sorry!" Kirby said as he gently placed a hand on the blob's side. "You weren't waking up, so I thought that maybe..."
The puffball couldn't finish his sentence, he didn't want to think that the blob couldn't be saved, but he also didn't want the blob to freak out more than it already did.
"A-Anyway, how are you feeling? Do you need food? O-or water?" Kirby asked. The blob let out a bitter "huff", but nothing else.
"You can't talk, can you?" Kirby asked. The blob's silence confirmed it.
There was a first-aid kit stored away back home, and though the nearest doctor was pretty far, Kirby would at least have somewhere to go should the blob's condition get worse.
Then there was Rick, who planned on being at Kirby's house later. Given the circumstances, he hoped that the hamster didn't mind having another "guest" at the sleepover. Besides, he might even want to help.
"Wanna come to my house?" Kirby offered." "You can stay with me until you're better, OK?"
The blob was still silent, and yet it didn't resist when Kirby carried it onto his back. It even tucked its orbs inside its body as Kirby carried him.
This really wasn't what he had in mind when he wished for a little brother, and there was a good chance that the blob would decide to leave once it got better. But Kirby was determined to watch over him for as long as he could.
If only he knew what this blob was or why it was here in the first place...
