It was a perfectly normal morning at Sakanoue Church where Hibino Hareluya and his father Harebane lived. Hibino was in his room sound asleep and dreaming of being the ruler of the world when he was rudely awakened by his father's voice.
"Hareluya! Wake up!"
Hibino rubbed sleep from his eyes as he got out of bed. "Damn it, old man ore-sama was having a great dream." He looked over at his father, fully expecting the old priest to be annoyed at him for being late for school. But rather than looking annoyed at his son's laziness Harebane instead looked dismayed.
Hibino frowned. He couldn't recall ever seeing his father so upset before. He followed Harebane to the church hall and his jaw dropped at the sight that greeted him.
The stained-glass windows had been smashed, leaving the floor littered with multi-coloured glass. The benches had been overturned and the walls had been spray-painted with red symbols resembling goat heads and the words "Mad Satan rules!"
Hibino clenched his teeth and thought to himself, someone is going to pay for this.
Later that day Hibino met up with Makoto Ichijou and Yamana Michiru in the corridors of Rakuen High School. They listened as he told them what had happened.
"That's awful" said Michiru sympathetically.
"You think Mad Satan have returned?" Ichijou asked. "Last I heard they had disbanded."
"They must have re-formed" Hibino replied. "You had better watch out closet pervert. They'll probably be after you too."
Before Ichijou could reply one of their classmates walked up to them with a nervous look on his face.
"Um, excuse me Ichijou-san" he said hesitantly.
"Can I help you with something?"
"Some guys came up to me and asked me to give you this" he said as he handed over an envelope.
"Were these guys wearing purple jackets with a red symbol on them? Like a goat head?" Ichijou asked.
"Yeah."
"Damn it." Ichijou opened the envelope and took out a piece of paper. He read out what was written on it.
"Dear Ichijou, what we did to your buddy's church was just the start. Come to the abandoned Kyodai chemical factory. Bring your buddy Hareluya too. If you don't show up, we'll let you guess what'll happen next. Signed Mad Satan."
"Ichijou, you know this will be a trap," said Michiru.
"I know, but I have to answer their challenge" he replied.
Hibino scowled. "How dare those ******** refer to Ore-sama as second-fiddle? Ore-sama will show them. Come my minions, let's get to that factory!"
The abandoned chemical factory was an eyesore. The towering cylindrical smoke stacks and networks of pipes were a dull, drab grey and marred by corrosion. As they stared at the desolate structure Ichijou and Michiru could all too easily imagine plumes of oily smoke pouring out of the stacks to befoul the blue sky above.
Hibino paid no attention to the surroundings as he marched towards the main building with a grim expression on his face. "Those guys are going to pay for wrecking Ore-sama's home."
"Hibino don't be so reckless. You need to think before you act" Michiru warned.
"Heh, it will be fine. Ore-sama can beat those chumps with ease" Hibino replied. "Even Ichijou could beat them."
"This time we'll stop Mad Satan for good" Ichijou agreed.
She didn't reply but she had a feeling it wouldn't be that easy this time.
Soon afterwards the three of them were exploring the factory. The floor was a rusty steel grate and the walls were lined with pipes. Grey paint was peeling to reveal bare brick.
"This place is disgusting" Ichijou complained.
"Fitting for a closet pervert" Hibino taunted.
Ichijou glared at him but before he could reply Michiru spotted something. "Look, over there." She pointed to a trail of green slime on the floor that led around a corner.
"Not slime again" Ichijou complained. Being sprayed with toxic ooze was an experience he had no wish to go through again.
Hibino grinned. "Let's go" he said as he hurried down the corridor.
The trail led to a large room filled with haphazardly stacked chemical drums. Gathered there were over a dozen hoodlums all wearing Mad Satan's signature purple jacket with a red goat-head symbol. In front of them was a tall, heavily built man whose face was covered by a purple mask with the goat-head emblem on his forehead.
"Ah there he is, the invincible Hibino Hareluya himself," said the masked man. "And the traitor Madman Ichijou. Glad you could make it."
"Let me guess, you're the new boss," said Hibino.
"That's right. I'm Akuma and I'm going to make you guys pay for crossing Mad Satan."
Hibino laughed. "Come on Ichijou, let's clear out the garbage."
"Right behind you."
But as they approached the gang members Akuma raised his hand. Two of his goons pulled out jars of clear liquid and threw them to the floor in front of Hibino and Ichijou. The jars broke and a roiling cloud of white mist engulfed them. Before they could stop themselves, they had inhaled some of the gas. Coughing and gasping for breath they both sank to the floor. Within just a few seconds they lost consciousness.
As the gas dissipated Akuma laughed triumphantly. "Wait until you guys see what we have planned for you."
"Wait, where's the girl that was with them?" one of his henchmen asked.
"No sign of her. She must have run off" another one replied.
"Pity" said Akuma. "Still, let's get on with it. Take them to the vat."
As the gang dragged them away nobody noticed Michiru looking out from a pile of drums she had hidden behind. She carefully followed them out.
Hibino and Ichijou both groaned faintly as they started to come to. The first thing they noticed was an unpleasant chemical smell that filled their nostrils. Their eyes opened and promptly bulged as they realized the situation that they were in.
They were in a large chamber similar to the one where they'd been gassed. Both of them were securely tied up with their arms pinned to their sides by coils of rope wound tightly around them. They were also gagged with oily rags tied around their mouths. Worst of all they were suspended in mid-air from hooks over a huge vat of bubbling green ooze.
"Mmmmph! Mmmmmmph!" they cried into their gags. They struggled against their bonds but without sufficient leverage even Hibino couldn't break loose. Looking down they saw that the members of Mad Satan were gathered in front of the vat.
"You boys are finally awake," said Akuma. "Good, I wouldn't want you to miss a second of being dipped into that toxic slime."
Ichijou's eyes bulged in fear and even Hibino looked worried. They strained even harder against the ropes but still couldn't get free.
At least Yamana got away Ichijou thought.
No! Ore-sama will not be defeated by these weaklings! Hibino raged.
Akuma held up a remote control. "Enjoy your bath" he said mockingly as he pressed a button. There was a faint whirring of machinery and the hooks started to lower.
"Mmmmph! Mmmmmmph!" Hibino and Ichijou cried as they began to slowly descend into the ooze.
From her hiding place behind another pile of chemical drums Michiru watched what was happening in horror. "I've got to do something fast" she whispered.
She looked around and spotted some drums that hadn't been stacked properly, leaving them precariously balanced. Moving quickly but quietly she hurried over, climbed up the pile and pushed the drums over.
Several Mad Satan members yelled in surprise as they were bowled over by the falling drums, even Akuma. The remote went flying from his hand and skidded to a halt on the floor.
Michiru raced over and picked it up just in time to stop Hibino and Ichijou's descent as their feet were about to touch the ooze. With a quick sigh of relief, she then used the remote to slide them away from the vat and lowered them to the floor.
"Are you okay Hibino?" she asked as she untied him.
"Ore-sama is fine" he replied as he ripped the gag off. "Now it's time for those guys to pay."
While Michiru freed Ichijou Hibino leaped forwards and landed a flying knee strike to a Mad Satan goon's face, then lifted him overhead and hurled him into a group of his comrades, scattering them all like ninepins.
Ichijou faced off against a pair of chain-wielding punks. He ducked under the first attack and jumped over the second. As he landed on his feet he drove an elbow into the goon's gut, doubling him over, and then finished him off with a chop to the back of his neck. The other one swung at his head but again he ducked it while snatching up the dropped chain and looping it around his foe's ankle. A quick tug sent him to the ground and a left cross finished him.
A Mad Satan goon charged at Michiru but she dodged out of the way and he ran right into a bank of machinery, knocking himself out. Another goon came at her and she took him out with a punch to the face. She looked over and saw a thug creeping up behind Ichijou with a pair of nunchuks. "Ichijou behind you!" she yelled.
He ducked in time to avoid a swing at his head. The nunchuks hit a wall and bounced off, hitting the thug in the head and knocking him out.
Hibino took out another goon with a roundhouse kick to the chin only to find himself face to face with Akuma, now armed with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. He grinned, reached behind his back and pulled out his own baseball bat.
Akuma charged forwards and swung his weapon. Hibino blocked the blow and counter-attacked but it was also blocked. For a moment they dueled, clashing baseball bats against each other. As Akuma brought his bat down in a huge overhead swing Hibino casually blocked it and with a sudden twist, he tore his foe's weapon from his grip and sent it clattering away across the floor.
"I give up! I give up!" Akuma cried as he dropped to his knees. "Please have mercy!"
Hibino laughed. "How sad. How did you ever delude yourself into thinking you could beat the invincible Ore-sama?"
While he was talking, he didn't notice Akuma taking a knuckleduster out of his pocket and slipping it onto his hand. With a roar he sprang to his feet and delivered an uppercut to Hibino's jaw!
Hibino stumbled back a few steps and then steadied himself. He smiled broadly.
Akuma's eyes bulged. That's impossible… How can he be smiling after that hit?
"Not a bad punch" said Hibino casually. "Now try Ore-sama's." With that he landed an uppercut of his own to the jaw of his opponent. Akuma toppled over like a chopped down tree and lay still, out cold. Hibino glanced around and saw that the remaining Mad Satan members had also been defeated.
"Hahahaha! Ore-sama wins again!" He gloated.
"Let's not forget who stopped us being lowered into that sludge and gave us the chance to fight back" Ichijou reminded him.
"Yes indeed." Hibino's face took on a rare expression of gratitude. "Thank you Yamana."
"Thank you" Ichijou added.
She smiled. "It's okay."
"Now to deal with these losers" said Hibino as he turned his attention back to the Mad Satan members. "Receive your penance… at my back." With that he reached behind his back and pulled out a feathery fan. "Ore-sama's secret technique… Tickle Hell!"
The next day the three of them were strolling casually down the street.
"How's the church coming on Hibino?" Michiru asked.
"It's fine" he replied. "My old man's insurance covered all the damages."
"That's good."
"Yes." He paused for a moment and then went on. "Ore-sama has been wondering about what you said before about needing to think before acting. Perhaps Ore-sama could be more… Look there, a sale on ramen!"
He sprinted across the road and disappeared into the shop. Michiru chuckled and shook her head.
"Never change Hibino. Never change."
