The mortician groaned. Why did All the weird stuff happen on her shift?
The body lay on the table. He had been killed by a long thin blade 3 inches wide. A sword. The kid had been impaled on actual sword.
She began to type up the report when the sound of her phone ringing made her look up. She frowned; It was a video call from an unknown number. she answered and the terrified face her fiancé appeared on the screen. She was bound and gagged, silent tears streaming down her face.
There was a sign hanging around her neck. It read; 'the boy you are examining right now; his report must read that he was killed with a knife otherwise she is dead. Nod if you understand'. The mortician nodded with a shuddering breath and the call ended.
She began to re-type the report.
The police officer looked up
"Richards, you're on labelling evidence" Mahony informed him, his words tinged with sympathy.
Richards ground his teeth "seargent, I was
The police officer sighed. He had drawn the short straw; bagging and labelling evidence. It hadn't been all bad, at least he got on this case. Of course, that meant due to staff shortages if you wanted interesting cases you couldn't complain about having to do the grunt work.
It had been sad though; poor kid, they had found him in alley. The body had been moved, that much was obvious from the severity of the wound and the conspicuous lack of massive amounts of blood. They hadn't found a weapon but, whatever was used it must be big, a machete or something. However, they did find fingerprints on the body's face clearly outlined in blood. Whoever did this was probably an amateur or extremely arrogant.
He was jolted out of his thoughts by the sound of his phone buzzing, he didn't recognise the caller ID. It was a video call which was unusual. He picked up.
Thirty minutes later all trace of the original evidence collected from the crime scene was replaced with new evidence, new fingerprints, and the kid's empty wallet safe for ID, just a mugging gone wrong.
The police officer had wondered if the murderer was an amateur or extremely arrogant.
Now he had his answer.
Buzz Buzz
May Parker rolled over in bed in an effort to block out that infernal buzzing.
Buzz Buzz
She was now awake enough to notice her phone screen light up.
Buzz Buzz
Groaning, she fumbled for her phone when on her nightstand appearing extremely dishevelled. Who would be calling her at 4 am?
Buzz- "hello" she croaked
"Hi" a male voice answered, "are you the parent or guardian of Peter Parker?"
May shot up in bed Peter had gone out that night for 'intelligence gathering' which was apparently different to patrol "that's me, is he in trouble, did something happen"
A long silence proceeded. The man sighed "I'm detective sergeant Mahony and I'm afraid we found a body we believe to be Peter early this morning, we're just going to need you to identify the body".
May dropped the phone and ran out into the hall. Peter should be back by now. Yes, he would be in his room, this was just a misunderstanding. His room was empty. He should be back by now. Slowly she walked back to her room and picked up the phone.
She could hear the man asking, "ma'am are you still there? ma'am?"
The sound of his voice was muffled as was the world around her. "Yes, I'm here" she said dully.
She barely remembered the officer telling her that he had been stabbed with an ordinary kitchen knife by a known addict and that it was 'just a mugging gone wrong'. She didn't remember writing down the address for the hospital where they were keeping his body or how she had got there.
She walked through the hospital almost in a trance. It felt like a bad dream as she took the elevator down to the mortuary. Reality finally crystallized for her as she looked down at Peter's pale face. Sobs wracked her frame, and she sank to the ground. Ten minutes later she had identified his body and calmed down. The bus ride back to her apartment lasted an eternity but finally she got home and settled back into bed and sank into an uneasy slumber.
