Chapter 1
Ana turned the switch and the car wouldn't turn over. "Ana, no! I'm going to be late. I knew this piece of junk would ruin my day." Ana shook her head at her best friend exaggerating as usual. Ana tried again, but nothing happened. Kate's head fell into her hands.
Ana tried not to get frustrated, "Well, Wanda definitely won't start with you talking to her like that. And let's not forget why I had to drive you. Your sporty car is getting a new bumper, so be nice." Ana rubbed the dash, "It's ok Wanda, start for me." When Ana turned the switch, they both heard the engine. Kate smiled and her eyes apologized.
They were best friends. They met while they were still in high school during the college tour. They came from completely different backgrounds. Kate's family owned Kavanagh Media, the biggest media outlet in Washington state and they were loaded.
Ana moved a lot because of her mother, Carla who was on marriage number three, didn't exactly put Ana first. Her mother wasn't like other mothers. Ana always wanted more, a better relationship. She never cared what Ana did and she always used to ask her when she was going to get a boyfriend. She should have been glad Ana wasn't wild, because she had every opportunity. Carla was too busy trying to please her husbands, but that never worked out either.
After she left her second husband Ana moved back to Montesano to live with her father, Raymond Steele. He wasn't actually Ana's biological father, but he was always her daddy. Her biological father died before she was born. He was a hardworking ex-military man. He lived in the country and worked on cars for extra pay. He didn't have to do anything, his retirement pay was more than enough. He was the only reason she could afford school and her apartment that her and Kate shared. He was a real father even though they divorced when she was young, very unlike her mother.
Ana drove through the busy city. Along the way she saw a coffee shop and thought about the lunch she missed. She pulled up to the tall building. It was stunning just like every time they drove by and saw it, Ana wondered who worked there.
Ana had no idea who Christian Grey was until Kate came home excited with the chance of an interview. She definitely didn't know he owned the entire building. She didn't understand it, "Who cares about interviewing some old man with tons of money? His speech at graduation should be lots of fun."
Kate rolled her eyes at Ana's sarcasm. "Ana did you Google him like I asked?" Ana shook her head, because why would she, it wasn't her interview. She wondered why Kate was giggling so much about the whole thing. "Well, you should have, he's not that old."
Kate fumbled through her bag. She couldn't find her pen, she dropped her phone, and her paper was crumpled. "Wow Kate! Are you nervous?"
Kate gripped her papers and looked at the questions. "A little. Do you want to come in? It looks like rain." Ana nodded and they walked into the building together. Everything was gray, white, clean, or made of glass. Kate checked in at the desk.
Ana looked at the young blonde type nervously. Her badge said Olivia, "I'm sorry Miss Kavanagh, you are the only one on the list. Miss Steele is free to wait on the couches over there." Ana turned and saw beautiful white leather seats. She actually thought that was the perfect spot to read her book, but she felt out of place as she looked around. She was wearing blue jeans, a teal shirt, and blue converse. Every woman was blonde, even Kate's strawberry blonde hair and green eyes made her match.
Ana had blue eyes, but her long brown hair was always out of place. Her mother was always after her to do something with her hair. She would often harass her saying she was ugly and would never catch anyone's eye. "I'm just going to drive to the coffee shop, then I'll come back. Kate looked at her, Ana hated coffee. "I'm just going to grab some tea. I didn't eat lunch." Kate smiled as Olivia tried to offer her tea or any refreshments she'd like, Ana turned it down. "Good luck Kate!"
Ana went out and Wanda started right away. She smiled driving her, Ray had gotten it for her when she got her license at 16. She didn't want to get rid of it, plus she couldn't afford anything else. Ray's retirement from the military was sending her to school. Because of him she received her health insurance and a monthly stipend. She was still struggling money wise, but she didn't tell him anything. He would have given her anything, but Ana never asked.
She walked in the shop and grabbed a cup of tea. She should have had a sandwich, but she was short on money. What she needed to do was look for a job. She had already applied to SIP, a publishing company in the city. If she didn't get a job there, she could always take Mr. Kavanagh's job offer, but being an editor was her dream.
She sipped her tea as she walked back to the car. She wanted to get back before the rain started. When she tried to start the car, it didn't even click. "Oh no Wanda. Not now." Usually she would start to turn over and then stop, but this was different. She grabbed her bag, tea, and started walking. "I should have stayed and taken Olivia's offer, Kate is going to kill me."
The walk didn't seem far or bad, but then Ana felt a drop hit her face. "Great, rain." She picked up the pace but so did the rain. She grabbed her hoodie from her bag, but that wasn't any protection when it started pouring. She ran to get to the Grey building faster. She chucked her tea along the way. When the building was in sight she ran even faster.
She stepped in and immediately saw everyone staring at her. She looked for Olivia, a familiar face, but didn't see her anywhere. She just saw a new woman at the desk and she was blonde too. Her feet made an awful squeaking sound as she made her way to the all white leather couches. She was embarrassed to sit on them drenched from the downpour, so she stood there. She breathed a sigh of relief as she saw Kate step off of the elevator, but that quickly faded when she saw tears. "Ana, let's get out of here."
Ana pulled her back. She wanted to know what made Kate that upset. Kate only cried when her boyfriends broke up with her. Plus she had to tell her about Wanda. "Kate, what's wrong?"
Kate finally looked at Ana. "Ana, you're soaked. Forget me, what happened?" Ana broke the news and Kate hung her head, "Great! Just one more thing to add to this lousy day. I messed up the interview. I asked him if he was gay?"
Ana's eyes became wide. She hadn't looked at Kate's questions, but she couldn't understand why Kate would be so bold and stupid. "Kate, why would you ask something like that?"
Kate explained, "He's never photographed with any girls, I don't know what I was thinking." They both stood there not knowing really what to do. It was pouring rain and the car was blocks away. Ana saw Olivia walking off of the elevator and she was crying too, "Olivia, excuse me." Olivia wiped her tears and asked how she could help. Ana thought everyone was having a bad day. She started to explain what happened. Olivia and Kate straightened up as a tall man walked off the elevator in a gray suit.
Ana thought he was extremely attractive, but guys like that didn't notice her. She was talking and then she didn't feel good. Getting tea and not the sandwich was a bad plan. She was about to add to the lousy day, "Kate I…" then she fainted.
