Hailey could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she and Jay watched the doctors try and revive Anna after she had coded. She prayed, which religion being something she didn't really use often, she prayed some kind of miracle that the young, traumatised informant would be alright but glancing at the doctor's sullen faces, it was clear.

They had done all they could.

But, it wasn't enough.

She was gone.

As she watched Voight limp, still in a state after a bullet had been put in the right side of his chest, remarkably still breathing and somehow upright, her mind flashed back to all those months ago, when it was Kim in that situation, laid battered and bruised after being shot. Hailey herself had to shoot a battered Roy Walton before he could shoot Voight. She had no other choice.

Just like earlier when Anna had shot Voight.

Hailey did what she had to do.

Didn't mean, like last time, it didn't sting.

She had no one then, she felt so alone, lying to the team, her and Voight whispering away in corners, the secret only the both of them knew before Jay connected the dots and he found out.

And it could have ruined everything.

It almost did.

Until it didn't.

But this time, Hailey wasn't alone. She had Jay in her corner from the start and she was grateful, entirely grateful for that. She didn't know what she would do without him sometimes, she honestly didn't.

He just made everything make sense the way the world continued to turn in the atmosphere.

Hailey, with tear stricken eyes and a sullen frown on her lips turned to glance at Jay. She could see the same expression on his face that mirrored her's, one of hurt and disappointment.

They had tried to save her.

Tried to save Voight from himself.

But it never worked.

You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved, Hailey had learned that throughout her experiences.

Now, they all have to live with the choices they made.

However hard and sullen that may be.

"You two should go." Voight's gravelly voice interrupted the swarming going around in Hailey's head.

"What?" Hailey asked.

Voight's hardened expression was as ever visible on his face but to the people who are close to him, they knew he was struggling to process all of this.

Hailey couldn't help but feel sorry for him, all he wanted was to protect his CI but it's never that simple, not for him. And someone eventually but unfortunately had to pay the price.

"Go. Check in with the others with the search warrant and then go home. There's nothing else to see here." Voight ordered, his hand still clutched in Anna's.

"We can call-"

"Hailey," Voight interrupted, his face sullen but hardened. "I said go. That's an order."

Hailey stayed rooted in place, her gaze still focussed on Voight and Anna until Jay laid his hand on her shoulder.

"Come on," is all he said in his gentle tone only meant for her and before she knew it, she was walking out of Chicago Med's ER department with Jay by her side.

They caught up with the rest of the team who had found enough from the search warrant to finally see the case be closed and The Los Temido's case officially ended. Not without its losses though, the amount of people who had been hurt and affected by this, the people who gave their life for this case, Blanca Consuela, Paco Guitterez, Joshua, and now Anna. It had wholeheartedly affected everyone who had crossed paths. But, a saving grace was that they were no more and no one else would be hurt.

The ASA who was still at the district ordered all of Intelligence to go home, they had gotten what they needed. The case was closed. Time for everyone involved to get some rest.

Jay was the first one to make it home, Hailey said she would pick up the Chinese takeout they had decided on. He took a shower, washing the day's events from him, changing into some black sweatpants and a blue hoodie before making their couch nice and comfy with blankets, Hailey's request of a film she had been dying to watch and after the day they had, he wanted to treat her.

Jay just got done with closing all of their blinds when the door opened and Hailey walked in.

"Hey," she smiled.

"Hey," he couldn't help but smile back. He didn't think anything would replace that familiar warm feeling he got in his chest when he saw Hailey walk through their front door. She was coming home, she was coming home to him.

"You getting comfy without me?" She teased as she put the food bag on the counter.

"No," Jay chuckled. "Just wanted to make it nice for you. I figured after today we could both use it."

"Agreed." Hailey sighed as she moved towards him. "Thank you."

"Of course." Jay nodded as he wrapped his arms around her waist. "You can go shower if you want. So you feel comfortable."

"I might just do that," she nodded. "The food is still hot so you can plate it up."

"I'll wait for you, first." Hailey nodded at that and squeezed his sides before letting go of him.

Jay watched as she made her way towards their bedroom where he heard the shower turning on, not a few seconds later.

His wife truly was one of a kind.

Jay wasn't waiting long because Hailey soon emerged in some shorts and a large red sweatshirt.

Jay already had her plate waiting for her when she returned, handing it to her to which she smiled softly at him as she went to join him on the couch, Jay immediately pressing play on her requested movie.

"You didn't have to do that," Hailey took a bite out of her food to look at him as she noticed that the film she had requested to watch was playing.

"I wanted to," Jay shrugged. "Besides, you've been asking to watch it forever and we've been so busy we haven't had time."

Hailey smiled softly at him, "Thank you."

Jay just shrugged, it was no brainer for him. Making Hailey happy was a priority he took very seriously and after today when he could've… well she deserves all the best things in life.

Clearing the lump in his throat as he thought about the unthinkable, he finally took a glance at her. She looked calm, beautiful. But most importantly alive. "You deserve it, you know? It was no issue."

Anyone else would have missed the hesitation in Jay's voice as he answered, his cloudy gaze as his mind went into overdrive. But not Hailey, she wasn't most people.

"Jay, are you okay?" Hailey stopped eating to look at him.

"Sure, why wouldn't I be?" Jay said quickly.

"Don't," it was soft but Jay sensed the determination in her voice. "Don't do that."

"Hailey, I'm fine. Alright, honest. Nothing to worry about." Jay brushed it off again until he felt his plate of food being removed from him and Hailey's soft hands in his.

He took a look at her, her gaze was understanding and full of warmth. Full of love. Just for him.

Soon, he felt his resolve breaking and he sighed, clutching her hands tightly in his. He just needed to feel her, know that she was alright.

"I'm alright," she said softly. "I'm still here, right with you. I'm not going anywhere."

"God, Hailey," his jaw clenched. "You scared me."

"I know." She nodded, guilt ridden in her voice. She never wanted to do anything that would intentionally scare him. The blast came out of nowhere. "I'm sorry."

"Not your fault," He chuckled, feeling tears in his eyes. "I was just… I saw you lying there and my heart stopped, it was like all my breath had been knocked outta me and then you were okay and clutching onto my hand… trying to get up because you are so stubborn," he chuckled watery, tears were streaming down his face now but he didn't care. He could be vulnerable around Hailey, she wasn't just some girl. She was his partner, his best friend, his wife. "And I just," he took a moment to sniffle. "I don't want to think about a world where you aren't in it because I don't think I could live in it without you. It's you and me, you know?"

"Yeah," Hailey sniffled and placed both of her hands on the side of his neck, leaning towards him. "Yeah, I know the feeling."

"But hey," she started causing Jay to look up at her. She was smiling but her eyes were full of tears, with some already having fallen out. "No matter what, no matter what happens. I promise to always do my best to come back to you."

"I know." Jay lightly squeezed her sides.

Hailey pressed a sweet kiss to his forehead before wrapping her arms around him, burying her face in his neck. Jay's hands immediately went around her waist where he blew out a sigh of relief and a silent prayer to the God's that she was still here with him.

"I love you, Jay Halstead." Hailey murmured.

Jay felt himself smile as he breathed in her scent. She was still here with him. "I love you, Hailey Halstead."

Because it's true. He did so much, it was honestly scary but nothing scared Jay when it came to Hailey.

Hailey pulled slightly away from Jay, smiling down at him, as he was smiling up at her. She pressed her lips to his, once, twice, three times.

Jay was the one to initiate the fourth one to which Hailey happily obliged to. It was a sweet kiss and both were more than happier for it to last.

Hailey's smile is soft as she leans forward and presses her lips to his forehead once again, thumbs brushing against his cheekbones. "I think our food has gone cold."

Jay's laugh is music to her ears which causes Hailey to grin widely, she loves seeing him happy. "Yeah, I think so."

Hailey presses a kiss to his cheek, her head resting in the crook of his neck. "You tired?"

"Not much," Jay answered. "Why?"

Hailey starts tracing the outline of his hoodie with her index finger. "Well… let's say if I was hungry."

"Want me to heat up your food for you?" Jay asked nicely, it almost caused Hailey to laugh. Always so sensitive to her feelings and ready to do whatever to help.

"I wasn't talking about that kind of hunger."

Jay didn't say anything and just as Hailey was about to ask if he heard her, he picked her up, bridal style.

"Jay!" Hailey squealed in surprise, wrapping her arms around him.

"What? You said you weren't hungry." Jay laughed as he hoisted her in her arms.

"Are you going to take me up on my offer?"

"I'm going to do you one better."

Jay made full intent on his promise to do her one better and Hailey was more than happy for him to fulfil that promise.

Their plates of Chinese takeout on the coffee table being long forgotten.

They didn't have it all figured out at times, that's true. Everything in their lives seemed to be at an upheaval but Jay and Hailey knew they would be alright, because they had each other.

And as the saying goes, I go where you go. And it has never not rung true.

As long as they have each other, they can weather any storm, climb every mountain.

Because they have the other waiting for them on the other side.

And throughout everything they might go through, in their personal life or professional, that is all that matters.
