Chapter 11

Euripides said, "When a good man is hurt, all who would be called good must suffer with him."

Anyone who knows Jay Halstead would consider him a good man and great cop. Sure he has made mistakes in his life just like anybody else but overall he's the type of person you can always count on no matter what. That's why Erin can't understand how his life is filled with so much tragedy. He lost his mom. She can't even imagine the horrors he experience in military, finding little Ben Corson, losing a fellow As Erin sits next to him with her hand tightly intwined with his she as she watches him struggle with another death of someone close to him.

Praying to God that they don't lose Nadia too. She and Nadia were just getting back on friendly terms and she knows that Nadia's death Jay didn't to deserve to see all of this death around him. He has a good soul, but as she watched him know she wondered how much more his soul could take.

Adam looks over at Jay and doesn't know how he could be so calm right now. Maybe it has something to do with his military training. Because everything in him wants to kill the bastard that murdered Hailey and possibly...he shakes his head to clear the negative thoughts. He can't think like that right now. Nadia is going to be fine she has to be. His eyes travel over at Voight and he can see the murderous rage in his Sergeants eyes. He knows once they find out who did this there's going to be hell to pay and he will be right there with him.

The image of Hailey and Nadia's blooded and bodies pops back and into his mind and he leans forward cradling his head in his hands trying to keep the memories at bay. He feels Kim's hand on his back and his is so thankful for this beautiful and strong woman of his. She is the only reason he is even keeping it together right now. Well that and the secret the two of them have been keeping for the past several weeks. They decided to keep the pregnancy quiet for now…well it was really Kim who wanted to keep it quiet. He wanted to shout if from the roof top but he respected her wishes. He knows how hard she worked to get into Intelligence and she's afraid that her pregnancy might be the end of that. So he keeps quiet.

But after tonight they were going to tell Voight. Adam couldn't image what he would have done of Kim had been in that apartment instead of Nadia. He makes a vow in his heart that after things settle down his going to marry her. Because if all of this has shown him is that you never know how much time you may have left with those you love.

His eyes stayed glued on the clock as the sounds of the hands ticking echoed through the silent room. He watches as seconds turn to minutes and minutes turn to hours praying that someone will walk through those doors and bring them some good news. He feels Erin rub her thumb across their adjoined hands. He closes his eyes briefly and when he opens them he glances around the waiting room at his team.

Voight stands off to the side with Al silently waiting for word on the bastards who did this so he can finally take his anger out on something but till then he has to wait. Al eyes keep a close watch over Adam, Erin and him making sure that they are ok. But who could really be ok after what they had seen. Kim has her hands on Adam's back as he leans forward with his elbows on his knees. He knows Adam's trying to keep it together in front of everyone but Jay can sense that it is taking everything in his friend not to break down. He watches as Adam lifts his head up and briefly catches a glimpse of his hands. They are cleaned but you can still see the stains left behind from being covered in Nadia's and Hailey's blood. Adam quickly shakes his head and places his arms on his leg trying to chase away the thoughts of what they had seen. Jay's thoughts turn to Hailey and he takes a quick breath and lets out slowly trying to keep his composure. He begins to shake his leg to get his mind back on track. But as he does he looks down at his clothes that are still caked in their blood. He knows that the image of Nadia and Hailey will be forever seared in their minds. And the three of them will never be the same.

As Hotch walks into Hailey's bedroom his mind immediately takes him back to the day his Haley was murdered. He looks at all the blood that coats the floor of the bedroom and all he can see is Haley's body lying there lifeless. Through the fog of memories he hears name being called but can seem to shake the memories. His name gets louder in his ears but it's the soft touch of Prentiss hand on his arm that brings him back.

"Hotch? Are you ok?" She asks him with concern written all over her face. He gives her a small nod and heads further into the room.

Morgan gives Prentiss a look but she shakes her head and knows no is not the time, "He surprised Hailey as she walked into the room and he must have laid in wait for Nadia and attacked her when she came into the bedroom. Whoever did this was merciless."

"The Reaper did this." Hotch says with confidence.

Morgan looks over at him with a edge of confusion on his face, "Hotch, we got caught the guy. He confessed to everything."

"Either we don't have the right man in custody or he was an accomplice to the real Reaper. We need to talk to Jeffery Charles." Hotch pulls out his phone.

Will stands at the door to the surgical waiting room to check on his brother. He spots Jay through the window and sees the utter look of devastation on his face. He always hated seeing his brother like this. He still remembers the first time he saw his brother like; when he found out their mother died when he was at war. The next time was when Erin disappeared without so much as a goodbye. He found his brother drunk on the couch in their apartment completely devasted. The last time he'd seen his brother this way was when their father died and he hoped he would never have to see his brother like that again but considering the line of work his brother was in Will knew that wouldn't be the case.

Dr. Rhodes leaves the operating room and makes his way toward the waiting room to update Intelligence unit on Nadia. As he turns the corner all of their heads shoot up as they gaze at him with hopeful eyes. Rhodes takes a deep breath and makes his way over toward them. He stops directly in front of them but before he can say anything he hears Erin broken voice ask, "How is she?"

"She coded on the table."

"Oh my god." Erin says with devastation in her voice. Jay grips her hand as Rhodes continues talking.

"But we were able to get her back. The stab wounds missed her spinal cord which is good news. There was some major damage to her kidneys but we were able to repair it." Everyone breathes a sigh of relief.

"So, she's going to be okay?" Kim asks.

"She lost a lot of blood. So, we had to place her in a medically induced coma to help her body heal from the trauma. The next 24 hours are crucial." Rhodes gives them a small smile. "She's young and she's a fighter. If she makes it through the next 24 hours she should make a full recover."

"Can we see her?" Erin asks.

"She being taken to ICU right now. It's going to be a while before anyone can see her and she can only have two visitors. Once she is settled and ready for visitors I will have someone come and bring you to her." Rhodes gives them a tight smile and turns to leave. Before he gets too far Jay stops him.

"Connor, thank you."

Rhodes nods his head and heads back down the hallway.

After Rhodes leaves Voight turns toward his team. "There's nothing more we can do here tonight. Why don't you guys go home and get some rest?"

"Sarge…" Adam starts to say but is interrupted by Voight.

"Ruzek, the only people that are going to be able to see Nadia tonight are Erin and Jay. I'm going to stay with them but I want the rest of you to go home and get some rest. After Erin and Jay see Nadia I'm sending them home too."

As everyone is preparing to leave Hotch and Morgan walk into the waiting room. "Sergeant Voight, can I have a word?"

Voight nods his head. He turns to his team. "Al, you stay with me and the rest of you head home."

The rest of the unit reluctantly leaves just as nurse enters the waiting area. "Family of Nadia Decotis?"

"Here." Erin says as she and Jay make their way over to the nurse.

"We just got her set up in the ICU. If you want to come with me I'll take you to her." She says.

Erin looks back over at Voight and Hotch torn between wanting to know what Hotch wanted to talk to Voight about and the desire to go and see Nadia. Voight nods his head at her to go. She gives the two men on last look and heads down the hallway that Jay and the nurse headed down.

Voight turns his attention back to Hotch, "What did you want to talk about?"

"We believe the attacks against your officers was the work of the Reaper."

Voight shakes his head, "We caught the bastard. Charles confessed."

"How can you guys be sure that this was the Reaper?" Al questions.

"We found the Reaper's signature at the crime scene. And when we went to talk to Charles we found him hanging in his cell."

"Son of a bitch!" Voight yells.

"We do believe that both Charles and the Reaper were working together but when we were getting too close the Reaper used Charles as the fall guy." Morgan says.

The nurse leads them to the outside of Nadia's room. "Whenever you're ready you can go in." She says as she gives them both a small smile.

Jay takes a deep breath and opens the door. Tears immediately fill both of their eyes as they see Nadia laying there with tubes coming out of her. Erin moves over to Nadia and moves the hair out of her face. "Hey, Nadia."

Jay moves beside Erin and places a gentle hand on her leg. His voice breaks as he says, "Hey, Nads…I'd give anything to hear you voice right now."

Erin looks behind her and grabs the chair to pull it closer to the bed as Jay steps aside to let her. Erin grabs Nadia's hand and says, "I know your tired and your body has been through a lot but I need you to keep on fighting." Erin lets out a shaky breath before continuing, "You hear me Nadia. You have to fight because I'm not ready to lose you."

A part of Erin expected Nadia to squeeze her hand or open her eyes and let them know would be everything to be ok but nothing happens. The only thing that can be heard in the room is the deafening sound of the machines beeping. Erin lets out the sob in her throat that she has been holding on to since they found Nadia. Jay places his hands on her shoulder and leans down to drop a quick kiss to her head as tears begin to fall down his face.

Erin opens the door to Jay's apartment with him following close behind her. Neither one of them talk as they walk through the apartment. Erin enters the living room and spots Nadia's jacket on the back of the couch. Tears begin to well up in her eyes as she places a gentle hand on the jacket. She looks behind to see where Jay is but doesn't see him. Looking around the apartment she notices the door to Nadia's room is opened. She spots Jay just standing in the middle of Nadia's room.

Erin calls his name softly, "Jay." But he doesn't answer. She comes up behind and places a hand on the small of his back.

She goes to say something but before she can Jay starts talking, "You know she gets on my nerves have the time like an annoying little sister. She plays her music way too loud. She leaves her clothes all over the apartment. Sometimes I wished I still lived alone." Jay's voice begins to break as he continues speaking, "Now." He says shaking his head, "I would give anything just to the loud music or her asking me some stupid question."

Erin moves to stand in front of him, "Hey, look at me." Jay looks down at Erin, "She's strong." Erin says with tears in her eyes, "She is going to get through this." Jay nods his head as the two of them hug. After a few minutes they break apart. "Let's try and get some rest before we head back to the hospital."

Erin heads out of the bathroom after her shower and finds Jay hunched over on the other side of the bed. She makes her way over to him. She notices that he is clutching a pair of tickets in his hands. "Jay." She says softly.

He looks up at her with tears in his eyes. "Hailey got these tickets for us to go see the Blackhawks." Jay shakes his head. His voice breaks as he continues, "She was my best friend…." He says shaking his head. He look up at Erin brokenly and says, "She's gone." As he breaks down Erin wraps her arms around him and he buries his head into her stomach and sobs.
