Booth stepped out of his vehicle, adjusting his sunglasses to block out the afternoon sun and maneuvered his way down the muddy trail to where Brennan and her Squints were gathered around the remains.
They had been called out here when a park ranger had come across the body on his routine inspection around the nearby camping sites.
"What do we have, Bones?" Booth questioned once he had reached the shallow grave marked by the yellow 'caution: crime scene' tape, as he flipped open the notepad in his hand.
"Female, late twenties. Extensive trauma to the chest cavity," Brennan began, not bothering to look up at her partner.
She was fixated on the body, it was unlike any other she had examined in her long career.
"The heart is missing," She announced, more as a question than a statement. Booth glanced down from his notes, his attention brought to the badly mutilated body laying on the forest floor.
"Could it have been eaten by an animal, maybe a bear?"
Brennan pondered for a moment, taking a closer look at the markings left on the ribs to examine where the heart should be.
The rest of the organs were intact, apart from the obvious signs of decay; such as discoloration and the putrid stench emanating from the corpse.
"Looks like something ripped it out..."
Brennan straightened from kneeling beside the body and turned around to face Booth, removing her latex gloves as she moved to walk past him.
"I'll have Hodgins take samples and be sure to send everything to the lab," She spoke before making her way up the trail, where a small crowd of agents and on-lookers had begun to gather.
Booth nodded and gestured to the Squints still working on the area.
"Bag everything and bring it to the Jeffersonian,"
He jogged up the trail to the crowd of people, keeping an eye out for anyone who looked like they might be admiring their handiwork.
Two men stood out against the faceless group, they weren't disgusted or horrified by the crime scene.
But they sure did seem eager to get a closer look as they pushed their way through the crowd to get to the edge of the trail that had been taped off by the local authorities.
Booth approached the pair, taking in their appearance.
One had sandy brown hair, green eyes, and what he noted Bones would've considered symmetrical features.
He also took in what the man was wearing, a worn brown leather jacket over a faded black T-shirt with jeans and steel-toe boots.
The taller yet younger looking man had shaggy dark brown hair, more defined features and wore a black and grey flannel button-up with dark blue jeans and well worn sneakers.
"May I help you boys?" Booth greeted the pair as they reached the caution line, both haltering in their stride when he spoke.
"We just got curious about the commotion, sir," Sam replied honestly, reaching up to nervously rub the back of his neck.
He seemed put off by Booth's appearance. 'Good' thought Booth.
"We had heard something about a body..."
"Thought maybe it was some kind'a animal attack," Dean offered, noticing Sam wasn't sure if he should say anything else to the agent.
"That is a possibility, but.. uh, we'll know more once our team gets a better look at the remains," Booth replied shortly, giving the pair a suspicious look.
"You two staying in the park?" Booth inquired, scribbling something down in his notes.
"Yes, sir... We're from outta state," Dean answered truthfully, offering Booth a charming grin.
"Which site is yours?" Booth asked glancing around at the surrounding camp sites, taking in the nearby cabins and empty plots meant for tents or RVs.
"We're staying in that cabin just over there,"
Dean pointed to one of the cabins closest to them, just past a couple of pine trees up a dirt path lined with trail lights and a sign reading "Camp site 6".
Booth looked up to where Dean had pointed and noticed the jet black Chevy Impala parked in front of the cabin, he took mental note of the license plate number.
"Nice car, sixty-seven?" Booth asked turning back to look at the two younger men.
"Yes'sir, she's my baby," Dean grinned wide, surprised the agent knew his classic cars.
"She's very beautiful," Booth said sincerely, tucking his notepad into the inside pocket of his suit jacket.
"How long have you been here?" He continued.
"This is our first day, we got here last night..." Dean answered.
"Well if you boys think of anything, here's my card," Booth produced a business card from his breast pocket and handed it to Dean.
"By the way, I didn't catch your names,"
"I'm Dean, and this is my brother Sam," Dean responded, offering his hand to Booth.
"May I ask your last name?" Booth inquired as he shook Dean's hand briskly.
"Winchester,"
"I'm Seeley Booth, and that's my partner, Dr. Brennan," Booth pointed towards the tall redhead standing near his black SUV.
