Shinji looked down at his phone. Eijun had texted him while he was in class and told Shinji to call him when he got out of class.

The only thing was… Shinji hated calling people. It was the absolute last thing he ever wants to do. He much prefers texting or email or Snapchat or… anything other than calling someone. Hell, even just waiting until the next time he sees a person is better than calling.

So, Shinji shoots off a text to his boyfriend.

Shinji: 'just got out of class'

He waits in the lobby of the classroom building for Eijun to respond. Knowing his boyfriend, he probably wanted Shinji to pick him up some food. Or he was confused about his homework. He sighs at the thought. Eijun is going to have to realize that at a certain part he wouldn't be able to help him with homework anymore. He was a math major, Eijun was a comparative writing major.

Shinji suddenly feels his phone start to vibrate. Eijun was calling him. Really?

Reluctantly, he presses the answer button and brings the phone up to his ear.

"Hello?" He answers.

"Shinji!" He hears the boy on the other side scream his name.

Wincing, he pulls the phone away from his ear. He needs to start remembering that this always happens.

"Can you not yell on the phone," he grunts into the phone when he finally hears Eijun quiet down. "You're gonna blow one of my eardrums one of these days."

Eijun chuckles softly on the other end. "I'm sorry. But… Can I ask you something really important?" That sounds serious.

Something serious must be happening for him to sound like that. So, Shinji nods into the phone, "Yeah, sure, what is it?"

"When are you going to get home?" He hears Eijun ask.

Shinji blinks. It's the middle of the semester. He knows Eijun isn't that good at remembering things, but shouldn't he know his basic class schedule by now?

"As soon as we finish this call I was gonna head back," he answers.

"Okay!" He hears Eijun reply, smile in his voice. "I'll see you soon then!" He says before he hangs up.

Shinji pulls his phone down from against his ear. Couldn't Eijun have just texted me to ask that?

Two days later, in the evening Shinji was sitting at the kitchen table of their apartment while Eijun had gone to the grocery store to do a phone run. He had taken a list with him, but Shinji knew that the boy always forgets to buy eggs while he is out there.

Looking at the clock, he assumes that Eijun should be at the store by now. It is only a five minute walk away. He texts Eijun a reminder.

Shinji: 'don't forget eggs'

Then he places his phone on the side of the table, going back to focusing on his homework. Then he starts to feel the table vibrate. Looking over, he sees that Eijun is calling his phone.

Did he really have to call me now? I'm busy here. Shinji thinks as he sighs and picks up his phone. "Hello," he answers.

"Why do you think I always forget the eggs!" He hears Eijun shout into the phone.

Wincing, Shinji eventually replies. "Maybe it's because you do? Every week you go shopping?"

"I do not!" Eijun yells. And Shinji knows he is pouting now. "That only happened once!"

"It's happened the last four weeks," Shinji refutes. "I'm just reminding you. Now can I get back to my homework?" He asks.

"Oh! You're doing homework?!" He hears Eijun ask. "You should have told me!"

And… what? Eijun left ten minutes ago. Shinji was doing homework at the table he hadn't even stepped away from since Eijun left.

"Yes," Shinji sighs into the phone. "Now can you let me get back to it? So by the time you get back I'll be done?"

"Of course!" Eijun yells. "This Sawamura Eijun will be finished with grocery shopping before you know it!"

"Great," Shinji says. "See you soon then."

"See you! Bye!" And Shinji ends the call. Turning his attention back to his homework he tries to focus on the problems again, but he can't help but look over the kitchen counter at the front door, waiting for Eijun to get back.

Then he feels his phone start to vibrate again. Another call from Eijun. What is it this time, he just called me three minutes ago?

He picks up, and the first thing he hears Eijun say is "I just want to let you know that I got the eggs! And I'm standing at the checkout now!"

"Um… okay… You didn't have to call me for this though," Shinji says.

"Of course I did!" Eijun yells into the phone. "If I didn't, you would have spent the whole time it takes me to get back wondering if I picked up the eggs!"

"Oh… Okay," Shinji says, knowing there is no argument he can put up to that logic. "Thanks for not forgetting the eggs," he adds.

"Of course!"

After exchanging a few more words, the two men end the call. Shinji is left looking at his phone. That could have just been done in a text.

Saturday morning finds Shinji laying across the couch, scrolling through his phone. Eijun is across the room from him, playing with the cables connected to the TV.

"Why do you always call me?" Shinji asks as he looks up from his phone screen to Sawamura.

"Huh?"

Shinji holds up his phone and the texting logs. "Whenever you have the option of texting back, you always insist on calling me."

Eijun looks at his face. "I don't understand." He says in confusion. "Why wouldn't I call you?"

"It's just… wouldn't texting be easier?"

Eijun hums at that question. "I guess so…" he says. "But I like listening to your voice!"

Shinji can feel his face start to heat up into a deep blush at that answer. He really has no argument to that, does he? He really wishes Eijun would stop dropping those bombshells on him… even if they weren't in public.
