A/N: I had yesterday's chapter written out, and it was edited. However, my husband and I went to a basketball game (I'm so thankful our team requires masks because I'm not sure we would have gone otherwise—and DAMN am I glad we got to go) and didn't get home until late. That coupled with the fact I didn't want people to be yelling at me made me decide I would post two chapters today.
Seeing the man who was the spitting image of his father hit the ground, Kurt first panicked and then rushed toward him. He hit his knees as tears filled his eyes.
"Burt's hit the ground," he heard Blaine say, though he had no idea why he was telling him this. He could see it with his own eyes. "We're at his house… I have no idea. One moment, he was coming out to help me unload firewood, and the next… Just, please. Hurry."
Kurt didn't know what to do. His mind was racing, and his eyes were leaking tears. He put his hands on Burt's chest and started to whisper to him.
"You can't leave yet," he said. "It's not time. I didn't get enough time with you then, and I'll be damned if you leave me again now."
Kurt's voice was full of conviction and love and grief. It was the only thing he could concentrate on. At the thought of losing this man, again, his mother's words came back to him about all of the unexpressed love for those we've lost showing in our tears. His hands started to glow gold, and his instincts kicked in.
"What in the hell is happening?" he heard Blaine say, and he couldn't answer him. Kurt was focused on what he was doing, not on the how or why. He knew in the depths of his soul he was healing the man in front of him.
Kurt could feel that the part of Burt that was ailing was his heart, that there was something in it that was sick. He concentrated all of his being on Burt's heart, pushing whatever the power was that was flowing through him to it. Seconds later—though to Kurt and Blaine it felt like hours—Burt took a gasping breath and opened his eyes. Kurt pulled his hands back, and the glowing force within them went away.
"Why am I laying on the ground, and why does my head hurt so badly?" Burt groaned.
Kurt had been so focused on Burt's heart, he hadn't 'checked' him for other injuries.
"You… Something with your heart happened, and you…" Kurt tried to explain.
"You passed out or something," Blaine said, still amazed by what had just played out in front of him. "Then, Kurt… Well, I don't want to cause whatever that was to happen again, so maybe we should—"
"Kid, just tell me," Burt said with his eyes closed.
"I healed you," Kurt said with a whisper.
Burt smiled. "Thought so."
"What?" Kurt and Blaine said at the same time.
Still with a smile on his face, Burt continued. "I knew you'd be good looking when you got older. I know you're not my son. At least, not the son I had. I know he died. I watched them bury him next to his mother. Something Blaine and I have in common is the fact that, regardless of if we can explain it or not, there is more out there than we know."
It's been said and done
Every beautiful thought's been already sung
And I guess right now here's another one
So your melody will play on and on, with the best of 'em
"Blaine, your phone is ringing," Burt chuckled.
You are beautiful, like a dream come alive, incredible
A centerfold miracle, lyrical
You saved my life again
And I want you to know baby
"Blaine!" he said louder, breaking the other man's shock.
"Hello?" Blaine said as he answered his phone right before the voicemail picked up. "He's… Well, he's fine now. I know what I said. He just opened his eyes, and he appears fine. No, I understand you still want to look at him. I'll make sure he doesn't move until you get here. Five minutes? Okay. We're right by the front door."
Blaine clicked off his phone and then looked at Burt. "The ambulance is on their way, and you are not to move. I have absolutely no idea how we're going to explain this."
"Who says we have to?" Burt asked. "Miracles happen every day."
"They certainly do," Kurt agreed, and the father and son looked into each other's eyes as if they were trying to see into the depths of each other's souls. "We have a lot to talk about, don't we?"
"I'd say that is an understatement," Burt answered with a smile.
A/N: The song used in this chapter is "Love You Like A Love Song" by Selena Gomez.
