Kurt and Blaine both lived out their lives right there in Houghton. When Burt passed away several years later, they weren't at all surprised he left them everything. They kept Blaine's house for a little retreat whenever one needed time and space to process through things or write uninterrupted.
They loved their life together and lived it to the fullest.
"What do you think the 9 means?" Blaine asked Kurt one day as they sat in their rocking chairs and watched the sunset through the forest trees, the radio playing in the background.
We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
They were now in their 90s, and it was something they'd never talked about. It just simply was.
"I've thought of every single possibility I could," Kurt answered. "And at some point, I stopped guessing because it didn't really matter anymore. I am getting to live this life with you, and I didn't want to spend time worrying."
"It's been a wonderful life, hasn't it?" Blaine asked as he reached over to hold Kurt's hand.
"It's been the best life," Kurt answered.
That night, as they lay cuddled in their bed in the exact way they had that first night they'd met, they took their last breaths in this world at the same time. The next day, the home health nurse would find them and weep for both the sadness that losing these two beautiful souls caused her and for the beauty of their lives.
On the night of the town's harvest celebration, Kurt snuck away for some peace and quiet. He enjoyed the party every year, though it seemed like something was pulling him away from it this year. His mother had met a new man, another elf like her whom he really liked, and she was content, so he didn't feel bad leaving early. He stopped at the apex of the little bridge near his home and started to hum a song he had in his head. Kurt had no recollection of ever hearing it before, nor was it anything like any song he'd ever heard in his life.
Living in my own world, didn't understand
That anything can happen, when you take a chance
I never believed in what I couldn't see
I never opened my heart to all the possibilities
I know that something has changed
Never felt this way
And right here, tonight
This could be the start of something new
It feels so right to be here with you
And now, looking in your eyes
I feel in my heart the start of something new
Kurt was obviously confused. The song made no sense. None at all, yet he could hear it clear as a spring day when the sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud to be seen. It has to mean something, he decided. And just like the magic of my cuff, it, too, will reveal itself to me when the time is right.
He thought about the song as he listened to the water trickling over the rocks and through the town. Several minutes later, he heard movement behind him. As he turned around, he saw an old woman sitting up against one of the buildings in a nearby alleyway. Kurt could sense she meant him no harm and walked over toward her, seeing the pureness in her heart.
"Are you alright?" he asked gently and then gasped when he really got to see the woman. "I know you."
"You do," she answered. It was a statement.
"He misses you," Kurt said.
"I know," the woman said. "And I'm not away from him in every reality, just the one you visited."
"What happened? Can you tell me?" Kurt asked.
"Can you be more specific?" she asked. "A lot of things happened while you were gone."
"During the song we danced to after we fished," Kurt clarified. "The one about only you and dreams and magic and destiny."
"'My One and Only You?'" she asked, though she knew that was exactly the moment he was asking about.
Kurt nodded.
"What do you think happened?"
"Well, it felt like something inside of us connected," Kurt explained. It was another one of those things he and Blaine had never talked about and just believed in. "Something… Not magic or anything like that. Something like it though. I'm not explaining this very well."
"I think it means that, if you choose, you can keep finding him if you want," the woman said.
"How am I back here?" Kurt asked after a few moments, trying to wrap his mind around what she was telling him. "The last thing I knew we were going to sleep, and the next moment I was standing there on the bridge."
"Look under your cuff," she said with a smile.
Kurt unbuckled his cuff, and there, on his wrist—was the number 8.
"So, the question is, are you up for another adventure?" she asked, holding the vial of blue shimmering liquid.
A/N: The first song used is "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. The second song is from the first day of this challenge, "Start of Something New" by Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens from High School Musical.
Thank you all so much for reading this. I honestly have no idea if I will write the other lives or if I will leave it here and simply let you imagine what they might be. IF you have an idea for another life/reality, please reach out to me. I never know when or where inspiration is going to strike.
This whole story came from this prompt, though I modified it some.
