Grief is a Monster Too
Hauntings by ghosts and spirits Sam could handle, he knew how to send them away.
If only he could rid himself as easily of the nightmares that haunted him.

Laughing delightedly, Jess darted into a vibrant sea of wild flowers.
"Sammy! It's beautiful!"|
Sam smiled, outwardly and in his heart.
"So are you."
Happy together they lay hidden, shielded amongst the flowers.
The day grew hotter. Sam noticed Jess fidgeting.
"You ready to go?"
Jess nodded gratefully.
"Please...It's toohot."
Sam stood. Jessica screamed. Fingers charred into claws reached out.
"Help me!...Burning!...Make it stop!...Sam!"
Sam jolted awake. He'd watched Jessica die; then re-lived it within countless nightmares...The flames...The smell...Himself...Leaving. That memory stalked him relentlessly, grabbing, holding him down while grief tortured him, rode him, tore into him incessantly. Leaving him ruined.

A.N. (In case anybody is bothered by these things) :
*'Lay'- Past tense of the verb 'lie' (to assume a horizontal position). Both lie and lay should be used when the subject is a living person/creature.
'Lay' when used in the present tense refers to a non-living thing being put down. E.g. She lay down her book.
Past tense when referring to an object or thing is : Laid. E.g. She had laid her book down.
