Chapter 4: A choice they both made

"Do you really wanna be seen like this" Gray put Natsu's arm over his shoulder as they started to walk. "Is she even still there?"

"She's there, I promised her." Nastu hissed as he took a deep breath.

"You need a doctor!" he argued and grabbed hold of his arm.

"I need to see her" He grabbed Gray's collar and pulled, growling as his eyes showed a dangerous glint.

"Just take me to her" His voice cracking as he let go of his collar "Please"

Seeing his friend broken, he couldn't help but agree to his demand.

They might always be fighting but he respected the guy. Time and time again, he never failed to surprise him. His ungodly strength, firepower, and his profound loyalty to the people he cares about. He was the perfect candidate, trained to be the next heir. Yet there he was, his childhood friend and soon to be boss was next to him beaten beyond recognition.

'Crazy punk'

Just remembering what happened a while ago, still gave him the shivers

"Leave? The only way to leave is to die!" a voiced boomed across the room. An ash tray flew across the room and shattered on the wall.

Not flinching, He stood firm with his hands on his back. His eyes filled with determination; packed with resolution.

Punch

Natsu staggered as he directly took a hit on the face.

"The moment you block or retaliate" voice low and dangerous echoed

Another punch, this time it's on the stomach

"You will never leave. If you're still alive after this, then I'll reconsider my decision"

He was given a barrage of attacks. Every hit became stronger and heavier. He just stood there and took the attacks. His hands clenched on the side as he endured the punches and the kicks.

Gray wasn't sure who was the monster of the two. The one hitting with all his might or the one taking all the attacks. The longer this happened, he knew the answer to his question.

Natsu just stood there.

No sound, no hint of retaliation. He was withholding his anger, bearing the pain, he endured. His willpower was terrifying. Whatever his goal was, he was ready to get it no matter what it takes. Even at the cost of his life.

No wonder he was considered as the inheritor of this organization. Once in power, he would be a beast that no one could tame nor could they oppose.

"You know that the boss is not willing to let you go." Gray said in a solemn voice. They kept walking on a slow pace.

"We had an agreement" he scoffed

"He said he would reconsider" Gray stopped walking and stared at his friend. "He didn't give a definite answer. He would never keep his word. You did everything for nothing."

Natsu fell silent. His body was shaking. He never felt this furious before. Gray was right. He never gave a definite answer. The bastard with a malicious mind.

'He'll never let Lucy go' his teeth gnashed as his hands formed a fist. He never thought he would one day be reduced into this state.

'Weak. Powerless'

They arrived at the train station and went to platform 7.

Ring~ Ring~ Ring~

Natsu's cellphone rang before they could reach the destination. Lucy was calling him. She left a dozen missed calls a few a hours ago and then it stopped, only to call every 30 mins. He did try to reach her after what happened but she ignored it every time.

Click

"Hick"

"Lucy?! What happened?" Hearing her cry frightened him. His head turned left and right searching for her.

She didn't reply as she continued to cry. Her sobs were held back as she cried to the phone.

"Lucy answer me! Are you really alright?!" He screamed as he tries to stagger around, frantically looking for her.

"You should ask yourself that" she whispered

"What are you – " He was confused on what she meant, but it hit him when he finally saw her. She was on the platform across them. She was holding her phone to her ear, while her other hand covered her mouth. Tears streamed down her face, as she looked at them.

She didn't believe it. She couldn't. Her hands were shaking as she watched the video. Tears blurred her eyes and gently fell on the screen of her phone. There she saw Natsu being beaten to a pulp, without even an ounce of resistance. He was beaten bloodied. She could hear his bones cracking. Nauseous she ran towards the bathroom, vomiting on the toilet bowl. Flushing the bowl, she sat on it in shock.

Lies. That wasn't Natsu.

Lies

She repeated it on her head as a mantra.

He's fine. He's not being beaten black and blue. He's fine.

She continued to reassure herself she bought tickets for the last train leaving magnolia. She stared at the tickets and decided to wait on the platform across platform 7. Deep in thought, she couldn't help but mull over on what to do next. Minutes, turned into hours and she still couldn't decide on what would be the right thing to do.

'To follow her heart or to listen to her head'

She could only decide when she will finally see the person that has been plaguing her thoughts. She continued to console herself that Natsu was fine and well. Of course, that was what she believed before she saw Natsu limping in front of her. Bandages on both of his arms. His face had different shades of blue and red.

He was beaten like a ragged doll.

"I'm sorry" she sobbed "Natsu I'm so sorry"

Natsu gripped his phone, almost snapping it in half "It's not your fault Lucy"

She shook her head as she dropped it down.

"I'm fine! I'll heal easily so don't cry." Natsu reassured her, he was struggling to go to edge of the platform.

"You were always injured every time we meet." Her voice trembled and her shoulders shook.

"You said it was an accident. You said you were fine" her voice became faint

"I am fine! Look at me!" Natsu screamed frantic. She raised her head and bit her lips as she looked at him.

"But it's not fine for me" she breathed out "I can't forgive myself for making you go through all that pain because of me" more tears streamed down her face.

"Lucy no – "

"I can't see another person suffer because of me" she cried into the phone. Wiping her tears, she looks up, doing her best not to let them fall. The trained stopped in front of them, cutting their sight.

Attention~ Attention please~

Train number 7J 77 bound for Minstrel is arriving on platform 7~

Train number 7J 77 bound for Minstrel is arriving on platform 7~

"I'm going to go" She mouthed as the doors slowly opened and she stepped inside the train. She walked towards him and stopped by the doors, leaving with only a few steps separating them. She ended the phone call and gave him a loving yet sad gaze.

"I just can't live with myself, knowing that the person I cherish. The person I hold dearest in my heart is hurting and breaking because of me." Tears swelled up in her eyes as her voice broke in sadness.

"That's why I decided" Wiping her tears one last time she bit her lips and faced him.

"I'm leaving Natsu" fresh tears threatened to fall from her eyes, she gave him a small smile.

He looked at her in confusion that slowly change into rage. Gritting his teeth, he bowed his head as tears slid down his cheeks. He gripped his phone with so much force that it cracked.

Ever since he met Lucy, he started to become greedy. He didn't know how lonely his life was. He wanted to be with her. To have a whole new life together. Sleep together, wake-up in each other's arms, laugh at the silly things, and have a family together. To grow old with her and tell her how lucky he was to have her in his life. A normal life with the special person in his heart. If he would just get on this train, then they would be together.

But I can't

A normal life would never find him. As long as he is still alive, he will always be the one and only heir. They will do every means to tie him up with them. No matter how much he hides, where ever he may be, they will eventually find me.

"I could never give you the assurance that everything will be fine" his voice low and dry.

They both stared into one another. Deep inside she hoped that he would go with her.

Choose me. I know I'm being greedy.

Please don't let me go. Say you'll be with me

Don't say good bye. Please.

"Take care. Lucy." He managed to utter as he bit his cheek in order not to let out a cry.

His happiness and strength could not overcome the dangers and sorrows it may bring.

Even though it breaks him apart.

I need to let you go.

I'm sorry.

Biting her lips, she closed her eye as she nodded her head, tears finally streamed down her face. She understood. She knows that it would be too difficult for them. Their silent conversation was conveyed to one another.

"You take care too. Natsu" her eyes full of sadness and frustration.

Thank you for everything.

Natsu sighed as he threw his pen on the table. Leaning back to his chair, he sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. This memory plagued him for the last 10 years. He missed her touch, her voice, her laughs, kisses and hugs. These memories of her were a double edge sword, tormenting yet gratifying. Remembering how she left and how he just let her go, felt like there was a sharp knife that was directly stabbing his chest. Her face filled with disappointment when he decided an answer, an answer that would not choose her. Her sad eyes filled with tears. A broken voice calling out his name. Her petite body shaking from all her sorrow. Tormented by such memories almost drove him insane.

"Enough!" his voice roared inside the room as he slammed a fist on the table, giving it a dent.

Ring~ Ring~ Ring~

Not looking at the caller, he directly answered the call with an irritated voice "What is it"

"Um…Natsu?"

Straightening his back, he looks at the caller ID.

"Did I call at a bad time?"

"N-No, I'm having a…. I was just working. I didn't expect you to call this late" he stammered and gave an awkward laugh.

He coughed and noticed that his watch said 9:30 pm. "Are you okay? Why are you calling this late?" his voice was full of worry

"It's nothing. I just…missed you"

"I see" feeling extremely happy, he couldn't help but grin as he twirled the pen around his fingers "I miss you too"

"Will you be done soon? I can't seem to sleep"

"Nah, everything's almost finished. I'll be there soon okay?" he placed his phone between his ear and his shoulders as he signed the papers in front of him.

"Okay, don't overwork yourself. I'll be on the sofa."

"I'm fine. You just go to bed, you need to rest" his voice was soft when he heard her muffling a yawn, coaxing her to go to sleep.

"I'll wait"

"I see, then I'll hurry. I'm gonna hang up the phone now alright?" he chuckled at her stubbornness and decided he needed to leave immediately or else the willful woman would just sleep at the sofa.

"Okay, bye-bye"

"The project has been approved. Any concern will be dealt with at a later time. Dismiss" Without giving any time to object, Nastu stood up and left the room in a haste but not before giving one last instruction to them.

"I'll be working from home tomorrow. All calls and e-mails will be managed by my assistant." He looked back at them and glared as he emphasized the last few words. "Do. Not. Contact. Me."

After giving them a threat, he left.

The conference room was silent. The board of directors and staff couldn't move and inch. Eyes wide and mouths open were the faces on each of them. What transpired a few minutes ago was so surreal that they were afraid that they were already dead and dreamt the whole thing.

When their boss threw his pen away in the middle of the report, everyone's hair just stood up. They held their breaths as they saw him pinching the bridge of his nose in anger and resentment. They were shaking on their seats when he suddenly screamed and slammed his fist on the table, leaving a noticeable indentation.

W-We're screwed!

The one who was in the middle of the report almost peed himself from fright. He immediately thought that he should just kneel down with his head on the ground and apologize with all his might. As he was about to ask for forgiveness, a sound halted everyone's movement.

That person's going to die!

Every watched in anticipation as their boss answered the call. Silently lighting a candle in their hearts as a sign of condolence. What they didn't expect was to hear a woman's soft voice calling the name of their boss from the other end of the line.

"Um…Natsu?"

It gave them a great shock that their boss, the devil himself, the cold unapproachable man, with a short temper and sharp tongue, smiled and had a soft tone during that phone call.

What even gave them the greater shock was that their impatient and unyielding boss was worrying and coaxing a woman to go to bed and rest. That he didn't like wasting anymore time, so he just signed and approved the budget of the project and then left.

Saved!

We were saved by an angel!

Overjoyed that they are able to go home a bit early on a weekday, admiration and delight filled their teary eyes. Their new sister – in – law was sent form the heavens above to purg – save their weary boss. Everyone that was present at that time were singing praises in their hearts at their new found savior.

Meanwhile, Lucy on the other hand had chills run down her spine while she was at home watching T.V. and proceeded to pat herself while muttering 'Evil spirits be gone'.

Rumors spread the next day that their demon lord was captivated by angel.

A girl with a slightly blonde hair threw her phone on the ground when she heard the rumors. She was waiting on the lounge when she heard the staff gossiping about what transpired last night. Slowly approaching them, she hid behind a pillar and eavesdropped on them as they wait for an elevator to arrive.

"Did you know that the demon lord was taken in by an angelic woman" a woman whispered

"What?! You and your lies" the other woman scoffed

"I'm not lying, it really happened last night" the woman adamantly replied to her friend and gave a dramatic reenactment.

"They were having the weekly reports when suddenly the demon lord's phone rang at the middle of everything. After hearing the woes of his angel, he immediately ended the meeting and rushed to her side. Not wanting her to be left all alone"

"Did that really happen?" the woman was still skeptical

"Yah it did, the managers were celebrating when the project was suddenly approved. The demon lord was said to be working from home today" the woman shrugged her shoulders remembering that she woke up in the morning with her supervisor calling to let her know what happened.

"So that's why the aura of the company is slightly better now" the other woman nodded in agreement

"Hopefully this angel would remain" the woman sighed "Ah, the elevator's here"

Gripping her phone, Melissa threw it on the ground.

Angel? Angel?!

She was breathing heavily as she steadied herself.

A workaholic like him, left work because of the woes of a woman?!

Her nails dug into the palm of her hands as she tried to contain her anger and jealousy. Her eyes were bloodshot as she stared on the floor. Her shoulders shaking and her teeth grinding.

Never! Natsu is mine!

With a huff, she picked up her phone and left the building.

Just you wait.

Lucy

To be continued.
