Chapter 7- Selene Darion and Greyson Goldberg

Selene POV

A girl sat silently at her window, reading silently from a rather large book on her lap. The book was interesting, a history on the Shreave family that King Maxon allowed it to be published a few years into his reign. It went over the history from the first King of Illéa to King Maxon and even held a bit of information about each King's Selection and his chosen Queen.

Selene's parents had given her the book once she was announced as one of Prince Payton's Selection. They had been ecstatic that she had been chosen and had ordered her to find out as much about Prince Payton and his family as possible. They wanted her to be as perfect as she possibly could for him so that he would choose her as his Queen.

Her parents always wanted more and more and more. They were never satisfied with what they had. Her family's caste was three but her parents still wanted more, not caring what she wanted. They were willing to do whatever it took to climb the social scale and more often than not, Selene was the one who always ended up on the bad end of things.

For years, her parents had trained her to be ladylike, obedient and silently, to always do what her husband would want. They thought a silent wife would be more pleasing to a man than one who had opinions and part of Selene hated it. She wanted to speak out for herself instead of doing what her reaching Mom and Dad wanted her to do... but in the end, she never managed to go against them, doing everything they wanted. Her parents got everything they wanted.

However, there was one thing that Selene did that neither of her parents knew about, it was her little secret and she wasn't sure how her parents would react. Badly she guessed. Selene did martial arts, it was something that she had taken up when she was young in secret and she loved it. It was her only true freedom.

"Selene!" A sharp voice snapped her out of her thoughts and she blinked. It was her Mom.

Selene quickly marked her page in the book and went down to her Mom, who was standing in front of a full-body length mirror. "Yes, Mother?"

"Come here." Her Mom, Maybelline said shortly, pulling Selene in front of the mirror. "Now what are you going to do when you meet the Prince?"

"Stand straight, be graceful, smile at him and pay attention to everything he says," Selene said automatically, looking at herself in the mirror.

She didn't think she was bad to look at, she had thick, wavy dark brown hair with streaks of lighter brown in it, flawless, olive skin and large brown eyes. She was also a rather tall being, five foot nine inches and for a moment, it was a worrying point for her parents, them being afraid she might be as tall as the Prince, taller with heels on. Of course, Selene found that ridiculous, from what she heard, Prince Payton was taller than his father, the King.

"That's right." Her Mom said, studying her like a piece of meat with cold dark eyes. "And you will try to become Queen no matter what. Just imagine what that would do for your Father and me!"

Of course. Selene nodded, of course, it was all about her parents, nothing to do with her at all. She was certain her parents would allow her to marry an old man if it gave them more credit in the town. They never cared about her.

"Yes, Mom, I can already imagine how elevated you and Dad will be." Selene agreed silently.

She looked back at herself in the mirror again. Her parents may have put her into the Selection without her knowledge, but she'd try to make the best of it. Maybe... if the Prince really did want her, she really could change something. For herself, rather than her parents. Maybe if Prince Payton chose her, she'd finally be free.

Grey POV

Greyson Marcus Goldberg sighed as he looked at the stack of books on his bed. He couldn't bring all of his books to read at the palace. For one, he had to pay attention to the Princess and secondly, he had heard that the palace had an extensive collection of books. He really hoped that the selected were allowed to look at those books.

If he couldn't get a hand on those books... well he was sure there was some way that he could get them. There was never a rule he wasn't able to bend in his favor or a situation he couldn't get out of. While he was a bookworm at heart, he was also charming; he mostly got what he wanted and what he wanted now was to win the Princess' heart.

There was always something that drew him to the Princess; it had first started when he saw footage of the Princess being kind to a young, skinny boy when he was publically shunned. It had warmed his heart and made him believe that she was a good person.

He just knew that the Princess was different. Different than the girls who had started to try and ask him out once he stopped being scrawny and defenseless and all just because he liked to read.

When he was younger he had been thin and weak, an easy target for others to pick on. But as he got older, he had filled out, becoming more muscular and handsome. At that point, many of the girls who had shunned him had tried to get together with him, all of who he rejected immediately. He wanted to be with someone who wanted him for himself, not his looks. He wanted to be with the Princess and he wasn't above trying a few tricks to get her; he just had a feeling that they were meant to be together.

"You aren't bringing all those books are you?" Grey looked up to see his younger sister, Lavender standing behind him, hands on her hips.

Just like him, she had dark brown hair and gray eyes, it was clear that they were siblings. "Mom and Dad are excited for you."

"I'm excited for me too. I can finally meet the Princess and the royal family. I can finally see if the Princess is the girl I should marry."

Lavender smiled back, but there was doubt in her eyes. "I'm pretty sure that the Princess is the one who does the choosing Bro."

"I know, but maybe we'll end up together," Grey said. He didn't think of himself as a full-on romantic, but there was a part of him that did hope for a fairytale romance.

"I'll miss you," Lavender said, pulling him out of his thoughts. A slight pout on her lips.

"You'll see me again soon," Grey said. Whether if it was with the Princess or without the Princess was another matter.
