Chapter 9- Alyssa, Reese, and Matt

Alyssa POV

The sizzle of meat and the smell of oatmeal cookies filled the air as a girl with wavy chestnut brown hair and large blue eyes stood in front of the stove, a soft smile on her face as she pressed the steaks into the hot skillets. There was nothing better to hear and smell if you asked her opinion.

"Seriously Sis, you don't have to cook meals for us. Aren't you going to the Selection in a few days for Prince Payton?" Her sister, Amelia said. She was two years younger than Alyssa and had sandy brown hair, but the same blue eyes as her. "And are you really baking for your friends too?" There was a note of disbelief in her voice.

"Of course," Alyssa said immediately, flipping the steaks casually. "I won't be home for who knows how long. We can freeze some of this food in the freezer and when you want to eat it, you can just warm it up again."

She knew Amelia shared a glance with their youngest sister, Hayley then, both wearing disgruntled looks. "You know you're not Mom. You don't have to make sure we have food on the table."

Alyssa nodded, looking back at her two younger sisters. "Of course I know and I know that Mom can easily do this for you. But I want to do this."

"Why?" Hayley asked, she had the same chestnut brown hair as Alyssa but her eyes were brown like their Dad's.

Alyssa paused thinking carefully before answering. She had taken up cooking and much of the chores when their Dad had left them when she was twelve. Her Dad then died three years later because of his addictions of alcohol and drugs.

Her Dad had been a mean-spirited man who never helped them financially or around the house, even when he was married their Mom, Daniela, so even before the divorce, Alyssa had pushed herself into a parenting role to make sure Hayley and Amelia grew up in a good environment and truth be told, her role as a "mom" pushed itself into her friend group. More than once, she found herself making food for her friends.

She knew her tendencies may annoy people because they saw her as bossy at times, but they also knew that she was extremely loyal to them and protective of them. Having a Dad who flaked out did teach her loyalty at least and it did teach her how to spot the good people from the bad.

"Because," Alyssa finally said, "I don't know what will happen during the Selection... I may get sent home in a week or a few weeks or he may even choose me." She let herself think about what would happen if Prince Payton chose her as his Queen, it felt more like a nice fantasy than anything else. "I'm cooking as much as I can now because I don't know if I'll ever be able to cook as freely again.

"Why's that?" Hayley asked.

"I doubt the people in the palace would want their Queen to cook for them." Alyssa said absentmindedly, "But I bet they'll appreciate my sense of fashion." Her eyes went to the journal at the kitchen table, full of clothing designs that she had done through the years.

Fashion was one of her favorite things to read about or look at when she had free time. She loved the different styles and how clothing evolved throughout the years. The many different materials used also fascinated her. When she was a child, she had wanted to be a fashion designer, but reality quickly crashed down on her when her Dad left and she decided she needed to do something more mundane.

"I bet you'll be Queen," Amelia said.

"The most beautiful Queen of all." Hayley chirped happily.

Alyssa smiled, a picture of her and the Prince appearing in her head, "Maybe. Just, maybe."

Reese POV

Reese winced as she heard a large squeaking sound come from her wheelchair. She glanced down at the wheels and saw that one of the wheels was tilted at an odd angle.

"Come on," She sighed irritatingly, a curtain of strawberry blonde hair falling down her side as she turned her chair, trying to align the one wheel. he almost jumped in surprise when her chair suddenly jerked as a pair of strong hands grabbed the handles of her wheelchair, turning it to the right sharply and fixing the wheel.

Glancing up, Reese saw her Dad standing behind her with a kind look on his face. Her Dad was still a handsome man at the age of thirty-six in her opinion. He had a strong, lean build with tousled dark hair and the same blue-green eyes that she had.

"Thanks, Dad," Reese said smiling up at him.

Her Dad, Tyler smiled down at her, "Nothing to thank me for." He said softly, pushing her into the living room and she saw her Mom, Amanda sitting on the couch a worried look on her face. It was a look that Reese knew well and saw often enough; from her Mom or her own face.

Reese may have her Dad's blue-green eyes, but other than that, she was the spitting image of her Mom. She had the same soft, features, slim build, porcelain skin and near straight strawberry blonde hair. The only difference was the eyes, her Mom's eyes being a warm brown.

"What's wrong Mom?" Reese asked although she knew what was wrong. They had been having the same conversation ever since Reese's name was announced for Prince Payton's Selection.

"I'm just worried. What if the palace doesn't have the right accommodations for you?" Her Mom fretted, glancing at her.

Reese sighed, this was the same worry since she had first gotten her wheelchair. Her family had never led the charmed life because they were five and artists, but they made enough and were content. Everything had been perfect until Reese had caught polio at the age of ten. After that, she had needed and wheelchair and her parents worried about her constantly; made worse by the fact that she was their only child.

"They will," Reese said sounding as confident as possible. "The royal family must have gone over my portfolio by now and told the staff. It would be pure incompetence if they had nothing to accommodate me. My name was announced in the report. They can't kick me out just because I can't walk."

Her parents glanced at each other, "We know that Dear," Her Dad said, "We just don't understand why you sent in a portfolio for the Selection and didn't tell us."

"Because I knew you would stop me. Because you think I'm different and that no one sees past the wheelchair I'm in." Reese said stubbornly. Ever since she had lost the ability to walk people never saw her the same; it was either looks of pity of disgust and she was sick of it.

Her Mom shook her head, "That's not true Reese. You still have friends and the adults listen to you more than other kids your age. They see how mature and serious you are."

"That's why I want to go to the Selection. I want to show that people with disabilities are no different than others, no matter what caste we're in." Reese told her parents, meeting each of their eyes so that they would realize that she was serious. "It doesn't matter that I'm in a chair. I'm as much competition as the rest of the other chosen girls. More so. I want the Prince to see how I live and how others like me struggle day by day."

Her Dad smiled proudly at her, "We know you are. You're Mom is just worried and we'll miss you. You're only sixteen, you're our baby girl."

"Not to mention that the Prince is twenty." Her Mom said. "He's a young man, Prince or not. That doesn't mean he isn't thinking what other men his age are thinking once in a while."

Reese nodded, "That's another reason I want to meet him. I want to see how he really is outside of the Report. He may even be the one I'll marry one day." She could hope, couldn't she? Mature as she was, even she wanted a little happiness.

There was silence after and her Mom cleared her throat again. "It'll definitely be an interesting Selection."

"Yeah, since Princess Sara's going to be doing a Selection at the same time," Reese noted. Honestly, she was excited to see Princess Sara's Selection more than her own since it would be the first time a Princess did one.

"That too," Her Mom said, excitement and curiosity starting to dance in her eyes. "But I meant it'll be exciting because two of King Maxon's Selected girls have daughters of their own that will be joining the Selection."

"Really?" Reese rose her brows, she didn't know that. "Who are they?"

"Celeste Newsome's daughter, Asteria Newsome from Clermont and America Leger's daughter, Eirelyn Leger from Carolina. Both of those girls were in the Elite for King Maxon's Selection and America was even the runner-up." Her Dad said.

Reese's eyes widened at that. She definitely knew who America Leger and Celeste Newsome were. They were both large figures in the entertainment business and both her parents loved America's classical music since she had been a five like them before King Maxon's Selection. Their daughters were in Prince Payton's Selection?

For some reason, Reese could fill the tide of the Selection shift at this small piece of information. It changed everything. She just didn't know if it shifted in her favor or against it.

Matt POV

Matt smirked as he checked his appearance in his mirror again, taking in his fair skin, messily tousled light brown hair and hazel eyes. If he had to say, he looked pretty good. He was tall and slim with a muscular build and he wanted to use his looks to his advantage. He didn't think that the Princess could resist his looks.

"Would you please stop drooling over yourself?" He looked up to see his older sister, Celeste looking at him with disgust. "You'll never win the Princess over like that." His sister was extremely beautiful. Fair skin, slim build, wave upon wave of light brown hair and clear blue eyes.

"You're one to talk," Matt said, turning to fully face her. "You model for a living."

"Matt, Celeste, don't start arguing, please." Their Dad said before they could snap at each other. "But Matt, Celeste does raise a point. The snobby attitude you put up won't do well with the Princess or the rest of her family."

Matt sighed and looked at how tired his Dad looked. He felt bad for adding stress to his life with the whole Selection thing. They didn't really look alike, his Dad had darker hair and blue eyes while Matt got a lot of his features from his Mom.

The Mom who his Dad had loved dearly and the one who had committed suicide because of her depression. He remembered them speaking to so many doctors to help her, but nothing seemed to work. Her depression had been genetic and one day, his Mom had just given up.

"I'll try," Matt finally said, looking between his Sister and Dad. "I just can't wait to meet the Schreave family. I do want to make a good impression." He glanced at his Sister, a sly smirk forming on his face, "I also can't wait to meet Asteria Newsome."

He saw Celeste's face redden and new he hit the mark with the last comment. "It's just not fair! I'm the one who was named after her Mom! Why can't I meet her too?"

"You're not in either Selection," Matt said simply. "I get to meet the daughter of your idol and you don't. But don't worry, I'll take pictures."

Celeste scowled but before they could argue again, she stormed out.

"Matt..." His Dad said, a warning tone in his voice.

Matt shook his head, "I'll go say sorry to her." He said, following his Sister out. "And I'll be on my best behavior at the palace. Promise."

He had a plan really and it was simple. Do the Selection and maybe win the Princess. He only sent in his form because Celeste goaded him into it, but maybe now, there was a new path he could take. One he had never seen before. The path to be a King.
