Chapter 11- Oliver, Sam, and Hayes
Oliver POV
Oliver sighed as he lifted the electric saw up from a piece of smooth board that he was cutting, trying not to breathe in too much of the sawdust as he floated around in the air. He pulled his goggles off and wiped at his sweat covered forehead as he examined the pieces of wood he was cutting before a smile broke out across his face. Chances were his current project would be done before he had to head off for the Selection of Princess Sara's.
"Good days work Oliver," Oliver turned to see his Dad walking towards him, a smile on his face. "You've been working overtime haven't you?"
"I want to help you get as much done as possible before I'm off. I may be gone for a few days or weeks." Oliver said, looking up at his Dad with warm brown eyes. "Who would have thought I'd be chosen?"
"The process is completely random, none of us could have seen this coming. But, if you had been doing your engineering homework as you should have instead of wait, you wouldn't have been chosen." There was a touch of disapproval in his Dad's voice now and Oliver chuckled lightly.
He couldn't really blame his Dad. It was strange even to him. On the day that Oliver had chosen to fill out the Selection form, he was actually procrastinating on doing an engineering assignment; he just couldn't find the will to do his homework. Funnily enough, he had the will to fill out a Selection form and send it in though, completely by random.
It didn't bother him that much though, he guessed meeting the Princess would be nice and maybe they'd end up together. He was planning to go into the Selection with an open mind and heart, he'd give Princess Sara every chance to know him and whether they worked or not was to be seen.
"Will you miss us?" His sister, Cara asked, joining him and their Dad. She had the same light brown hair and warm brown eyes as him and he completely adored her.
"Of course," Oliver said, reaching out to ruffle Cara's hair. "I'll miss you guys every day and I'll look at this every day to remind me of you." He looked down at the tattoo on his wrist, it said CAR.
He knew most people found the tattoo odd and some had even speculated that he had an unhealthy attachment to his major or that he was being a typical jock by having a random tattoo, but his friends and family understood it. The tattoo he had was a symbol of love he felt for his family. CAR stood for: Cara (his sister), Anna (his mother) and Robert (his father), the first letters of those three names spelled out CAR for every member of his family.
"Right," Cara said, smiling down at the tattoo. "You're not going to compare the Princess to Eva or Adina right? Do you think she likes jocks? Or comics? Because if she doesn't, then you have no luck, Bro."
Oliver blinked at the slew of questions Cara suddenly gave him. He glanced at his Dad for help but his old man just shrugged, clearly wanting him to take care of his Sister himself.
"Eva and Adina were never serious, I won't compare the Princess to anything." Olver began, "And I don't know if she likes sports or jocks. The report has never shone her doing basketball, soccer, football or anything, but I doubt she would want to be seen doing that. And of course, I don't know if she likes comics."
"For your sake, I hope she does," Cara said in a sing-song voice before hurrying away.
Oliver let out an exasperated sigh and looked at his Dad again, only to see amusement in his dark brown eyes. "May I suggest something son?"
"What?" Oliver asked, suddenly feeling exhausted. He didn't think he'd like his Dad's suggestion.
"Next time, just do your homework." His Dad said.
Sam POV
Sam was reading silently in the university library when he suddenly felt someone flap his shoulder, causing his head to jerk up to find the perpetrator. Of course, it would be his roommate and best friend, Derrick Greyson.
"What do you want?" Sam asked, annoyance in his tone at being interrupted, he had just gotten to a good part in his law book about the rights of children and teachers.
"I just want to know why you're here and not psyching yourself out about the fact that you're in Princess Sara's Selection," Derrick said, pushing curls of midnight black hair from his forehead.
Sam rolled his eyes, "Maybe it's because I never applied? Have you found out who sent in my form?"
Derrick shook his head as a negative. "I know you didn't send it. I didn't send it. I really doubt your parents sent it. I mean... this is a new level for a prank don't you think? Who sends in a Selection form for a prank? It's serious business."
Sam nodded seriously, but a smile was starting to form on his lips. Besides the fact that he would be missing school, he didn't really mind doing the Selection. He'd get to meet the royal family and learn more about them and Illéa's history if he could.
"At least you'll be the least likely to be sent home for breaking any rules or laws. I think you'd be the first to punish yourself if you did." Derrick said once the silence stretched on.
Sam nodded absentmindedly, "Well the rules and laws were written into our country for a reason. Of course, we shouldn't break them. Actually, this is going to be a good chance to talk to the King. He's already trying to change the caste system so I should talk to him about other laws as well. Perhaps he will listen to me. The laws still don't protect the people that need it most."
It was disgusting. People who needed to be protected weren't able to be protected because the law wasn't on their side; even if it was beneficial to others besides them. It was why he took up law in the first place; to be able to fight and speak for the people who weren't able to themselves. He wanted laws changed to benefit everyone. Not just the high class and the rich.
He was already working towards his dream by being a legal assistant and he had done some cases already. One that really stood out to him at least was that he had helped a prostitute regain custody of her child when the Father tried to claim her baby because he was in a higher caste, it didn't even matter to the court at first that the Father was in no way a good man to raise a child. Honestly, Sam was lucky he was able to convince the judge and jury to make an exception and give custody to the prostitute.
"You have to win the Princess over first." Derrick pointed out again, breaking into his thoughts.
"Yes," Sam said looking thoughtful, he really doubted that the Princess was someone who cared. He had thought the Princess to be rational and down to earth before but that was all before she decided to have her own Selection. No sane person would have done that; at least in his mind.
"I can't wait to meet the Princess either." Even as he said that though, he wondered how true it was. Was the Princess the caring person she usually showed herself to be on the Report or was she more air-headed than he thought?
Hayes POV
"Another round for our Selected Man!" There was a wave of joyful cheers and a young man with bright golden hair and light green eyes laughed along with them.
"Good job Hayes!" Hayes looked over at his Station Chief's face and his smile widened. After Princess Sara's Report and her announcement of her Selected the men at the fire station had broken out in cheer.
Every single fireman from the Clermont fire station that was eligible had sent in a Selection form for Princess Sara; the reason being a bet the fire department had with the police department because of their on-going rivalry. The bet was that whichever department gets a guy into the Selection, the other one would have to buy them a year's worth of donuts and the fire department won and now they were all out celebrating.
"I didn't do anything." Hayes laughed, merrily loving the warm feeling he got as he was surrounded by the people he considered brothers.
He loved working as a fireman, it gave his life purpose and gave him the opportunity to save as many people as he could. He loved to save lives and it gave him a chance to look out for his own family. He also appreciated the gratitude he got from the people he saved but was careful to never let any of it go to his head. He was only human after all.
"Our young Hayes gets to meet the Princess," Owen, one of the older firefighter's boasted proudly to whoever listened in all the ruckus around him. And even though Hayes was sitting fairly close to him, he had a hard time hearing him over the other people in the bar.
"Lucky guy." Clint, a fireman nearer to Hayes' age said, there was happiness in his eyes, but also a bit of jealousy. "You better write to us, man, tell us how the Princess really is."
Hayes laughed again, pulling Cling closer to ruffle his hair. "You bet, Clint. I'm actually pretty excited to meet everyone."
Honestly, though, he thought everyone else was more excited for him. Whether they were truly happy for him or happy that they'd get donuts for a whole year though, he couldn't say. He just knew that his firefighter family loved their doughnuts.
"You don't seem excited." His best friend, Chase noted, looking at him with narrowed blue eyes. "What's up, man?"
"I am excited," Hayes said, and he was. It was a good opportunity for him after all and his family was over the moon that he was selected. "I just wish my Dad was here."
"He'd be proud," Chase said automatically. "He was proud when you became a firefighter and a two, Hayes. You really helped your parents and siblings out by going from a six to a two by being accepted as a firefighter. In the end, you made his life easier. I know for a fact that if he were here he'd be proud."
Hayes smiled, light green eyes lighting up. "Thanks." He rose to his feet, "I better get home, my Mom will be up all night waiting for me."
"Take care, Dude," Clint said, waving him off.
Hayes exited the ba, feeling the warm night air hit his face and he let out a breath of relief, while he was genuinely happy, the atmosphere had been a bit stifling. He hoped the palace wasn't like that. He hoped that the Princess was all that he had seen her to be.
If there was one thing Hayes was worried about, it was about how crowded the Selection would be since there were two going on at the same time. He was also worried about the Schreave family not being what he expected them to be. From what he had observed they were a good family, but maybe it was only for the cameras, it was time for him to see for himself how the royal family he worked for was really like.

He is considered very cool, calm, and collected, as well as very analytical and thoughtful. He seems a bit distant and aloof at first, but he is actually very kind and caring towards others. He plans on becoming a civil litigator and working as a lawyer for legal aid (he wants to fight for those who need the most help). He has worked as a legal assistant for multiple cases already, and is making a splash in the provincial and national legal scene for his defense of a prostitute's right to remain the guardian of her child (the father had sued for custody, but he was technically unfit to parent, but due to his higher caste, was legally entitled to the prostitute's child, but Samuel managed to convince the judge and jury to make an exception, and his passionate and well-thought out defense earned him some acclaim in the legal community)

He is highly observant and generous towards others, but while he doesn't care for insults towards him, he does take offense when you insult his loved ones, so beware. Overall, Hayes Huntley is very kind, easygoing, loving, and selfless, but knows when to stop joking and take things seriously.

He became a firefighter because he always admired them growing up-he never particularly cared for joining the military or the police, as he saw them treat lower castes horribly, but the firefighters never did-they only did their job, which was to put out fires and save lives, so it was always his goal. Despite being born a six, he was chosen for his physical ability and dedication, and thus, he became a two.
