Chapter 16- Make-Over

Catherine POV

Catherine bit her lip nervously as she felt maids snip at her waves of chestnut hair. They were cutting the dead ends off and smoothing her hair with oils but she was worried. She loved to put her hair up and didn't want them to cut it too short. But it was a needless fear. As she looked around at all the maids who worked she saw that they only really trimmed the dead-ends out of the girl's hair and for the girls that had shorter hair, some even got extensions put in to make their hair look longer. Interestingly enough, she saw that some girls were getting their hair dyed as well.

The process to beautify the girls seemed to take different amounts of time depending on the girl. Her make-up station partner seemed to not mind however as she sat completely still as the maids played around with her loose curls of dark red hair.

The other girl next to her had maids trying to add natural gentle waves to her pale blonde hair, and the maids were even some smoothing lotion onto her skin that made her skin just slightly darker.

She wondered why they joined the Selection in the first place. She joined because she wanted to have the experience of the Selection and take in the setting. She also hoped that the atmosphere would give her new ideas and maybe more opportunities. Win or lose, she'd become a three after the Selection instead of a six, so maybe she could finally achieve her dream of going into technical theatre. Because even though she was a six, she had always had a creative side and she always wanted to work for the theater a theatre. She had enough experience with the technical side of theatre because she tried to work with theatre tech as much as possible on the side while she wasn't working as a six.

Her biggest concern at the moment, however, was the other girls, she wasn't exactly the most extroverted person, actually, she was very introverted so she didn't have a large group of friends, but the ones that she did she was extremely close and loyal too, even if they did wear her down sometimes. What if she didn't get along with any of the girls? Maybe she could try making friends with the two girls next to her?

Since they had to share the make-over room with the guys there was a divider and the make-up chairs had to be clumped together instead of spreading out.

"You both look nice," She ventured after a moment of hesitation. She didn't want to go through this Selection without one or two friends.

Both girls turned to look at her, and it was the blonde that spoke first, "Thank you, you look very nice too."

"Thanks," The dark red-haired girl said looking her up and down with curious green eyes. "I like what they did with your hair."

Catherine smiled, her brown eyes going down as a blush filled her face, "Thanks, um… is your hair naturally that shade? I've only met gingers or carrot-tops, or people with light auburn hair. Nothing that dark."

"It's natural." She smiled, "I'm Eirelyn by the way."

"Catherine," Catherine said a smile on her face as she met Eirelyn's green eyes. The eye-shadow the maids had put on her really highlighted the hints of blue in her bright emerald green eyes.

"Everly," The blonde girl said smiling at them as all, but her smile was a bit more guarded than the others. "Can I ask why you want to be in the Selection?"

Catherine blinked at the bold question, the first day of the competition hadn't technically started yet and the blonde was already scoping out the competition. "I joined for the experience and because I think the Prince is cute and I want to know him. Also, I want a chance to see the backstage of the report since I want to work in technical theatre." Catherine said, looking down as she spoke softly.

Everly nodded, biting her lip, "I want to know the Prince too, and this is cheesy but I want to fall for him. I've met him once and he's kind."

Catherine nodded, feeling slightly ashamed about her motives. She wasn't sure if she would fall in love with prince Payton or not, but Everly seemed like she really wanted a chance with him. Both girls looked to Eirelyn and she blushed.

"Honestly, my best friend sent in my form because of a pack we made as children," Eirelyn said.

"What pack was that?" Catherine asked, her imaginative mind running all sorts of scenarios. Each scenario was more ridiculous than the last.

Eirelyn laughed, "That we'd do every single stepping stone moment in our lives together. But this is crazy, I'm still half-convinced that she rigged the Selection somehow to get us both here."

"So you don't want the Prince at all?" Everly asked curiously, her pale blue eyes narrowed.

Eirelyn bit her lip and glanced between Catherine and Everly. "I… promised my Mom that I'd give Prince Payton a chance. And…. I guess that I do want to know him."

Catherine nodded, it was a reasonable response in her opinion. How could they be expected to already be falling in love with the Prince when they had never met him face to face? Honestly, she could also say that she didn't love him, but maybe that would change once she met him.

Vera POV

Vera sat stiffly as she allowed maids to cut her hair, watching as ends of white-blonde hair fell to the floor. She hoped that the maids knew what they were doing. She didn't want her new look to not fit her.

"Ma'am?" she glanced at a small maid who was standing to her side, her eyes on the floor. "We're going to start dying your hair now."

"Why do you need to dye my hair?" Vera asked, struggling not to snap at the maid. "What's wrong with it?" She liked her hair as it was, she was okay with them cutting it a bit but anything else was a waste of time.

"We think your hair should be one-tone. The darker roots may-" The maid began but Vera immediately cut her off.

"My her looks perfect with the darker roots," Vera cut off sharply. One thing that the maids should quickly realize was that she was a strict girl who knew exactly what she wanted and would do almost anything to get it. "It doesn't have to change there."

"But…" The maid tried to protest but Vera gave her a hard look and she shrunk away.

"It's fine," Vera said more sternly. She watched the maid nod before going on to continue a different task. "I won't dress in anything yellow or orange, and if you can help it, no red either. Those colors all make me look too pale." She added, she didn't know what maids she would get but hopefully, the maids here would pass on the message. She liked perfection and strictness; it was how she grew up, how her Mom was and exactly how she wanted to be.

Her Mom was her idol and she thought her how to be strict. She learned to be calm and thoughtful and to never break the rules and to never back down. It was because of these traits that she was always frustrated at her brother Victor who was much more carefree and laid back, taking after their Dad instead of their Mom. Sometimes, she wondered what her Mom had seen in their dad anyways.

Her Dad was so care-free and laid back and Victor took after him. It was frustrating but she was extremely close to her brother, her twin. He was her best friend if nothing else. That was why he was able to convince her to apply for the Selection with him and somehow they had both gotten in.

But now that they were here, Vera knew that she would get the Prince because her Mom had been so proud when she had been Selected. Victor saw this Selection as an adventure, but she saw this as an opportunity to be Queen. She knew that she'd be able to gain the respect of the people and that she'd be able to help the nation flourish.

It was because of Victor that they were here, but she'd use this entire opportunity to prove herself to the nation and everyone else.

Risa POV

A small girl with porcelain skin, black hair and eyes fiddled nervously with her fingers as she allowed maids to tightly braid her long, shiny black hair and paint her toenails. They had tried to paint her fingernails, but she had been playing with her fingernails so much that they decided to do her toes first something that she was grateful for.

"Lady Risa?" A maid asked kindly and Risa jumped in surprise, no one had ever called her a Lady before, especially since she was a seven.

"Yes?" Risa asked in a small voice, meeting the Maid's gentle brown eyes as she looked at her.

"Which of these do you like the most?" The maid asked her holding out a tray that held various hair clips. They were all gleaming with designs of flowers or jewels and Risa gasped, she had never seen anything so nice; especially offered to her. "We want to put it in your hair."

Risa stared at the clips for a long moment before gently touching one that had white and gold orchids on the clip. "This one if that's okay," Risa said gently, not looking up at the maid.

The Maid nodded wordlessly and went back to work, tugging on her black strands but Risa could tell that the Maid wasn't trying to hurt her at least and took a breath. In the few minutes that the maid had spoken to her, she could feel her heartbeat faster as her hands grew clammy and her cheeks flushed.

Why had she joined the Selection in the first place? Why had she allowed her parents to talk her into it? She knew herself better than anyone. She had social anxiety and was so quiet. She only had one or two friends and even though she hated to admit it, she was lonely because she could never bring up enough nerve to talk to anyone new. All she ever did was nod; it was a complete miracle that she had even talked to the Maid.

She'd be lucky if she was even acknowledged by the other girls. She'd be lucky if she even made one friend through her entire stay. And she'd be extremely lucky if the Prince wasn't bored with her on the first day and threw her out. She just prayed that she'd at least make one friend through this trial.

Victor POV

Victor smirked at himself as he looked at his reflection in the mirror. He had to say, he looked pretty good with his white-blonde hair that was swept to one side and his blue eyes. He looked great. He wondered what his twin Vera was doing through the entire make-over. Probably scaring off the maids and bossing them around. That girl hated to lose control of a situation. In her mind, everything had to be perfect.

He supposed that was what was bound to happen to someone who looked up to the strict fashion of their Mom. He loved his Sister, and he was the only person who she opened up to but sometimes she was frustrating. She didn't know how to relax. He, on the other hand, was much more free-spirited and curious, more open and emotional as a person and more independent one despite what others thought and it was all the influence was because he spent more time with their Dad instead of their Mom.

Though he did admit that he had his flaws, he tended to overthink everything that he did, even the smallest details. His sister thought it was funny since she said it went against his free-spirit. He also stressed a lot because of his over-thinking. It was troublesome.

He was also ADHD, which meant that he had a hard time standing still and sitting around. That meant that he was going to have an extremely hard time at the Selection because of all the protocols that would be taking place.

But he didn't regret signing up for the Selection and forcing Vera to sign up with him. They had needed to get out of Kent and away from home so bad, so this adventure was still good for them. Even if Vera thought it was stupid in the beginning, he knew that she was now committed to winning now that they were here, it was just in her nature. He just hoped that this adventure wouldn't come back to haunt him.

Teddy POV

Teddy wanted nothing more than slouch on the pedestal that he was standing on as the butlers tried to get measurements for him so that they could get suits other pieces of clothing for him. He never understood why the contestants of the Selection even needed to have a make-over anyways. Could the Prince and Princess not stand the way the contestants looked? Or was it all just for the cameras? He really didn't know and part of him didn't really care. His family had always said that he was good looking but the make-over was giving him doubts. The butlers had cut his light brown hair so it no longer hung over his eyes, making his light blue eyes visible for everyone to see and had given him a clean shave.

He was only a bit surprised that he looked like a different man altogether, much neater than the marine biologist he actually was. He bet that someone that didn't know him would have mistaken him for a businessman, but his family wouldn't. Never his family, they were all to close and they all cared about each other. Well...he knew his Mom and Dad cared about him, but his older brother Tyson was a complete mystery, maybe because he was ten years older than him and had already broken away from the family before Teddy was old enough to really understand what was happening.

Talking about family, he already missed his parents and he knew that they missed him too. Depending on how long he'd be in the Selection, it may be a while before he saw them again. Part of him didn't even understand why he entered the Selection in the first place, he knew he had done it to honor his deceased twin Thomas, who had a crush on the Princess before he died, but this was starting to be silly in Teddy's mind. Thomas had been the one who had liked her before he passed away that winter, was trying to court the girl his brother's crush the best idea? Probably not.

But he was in the competition now so he would do this best. He just hoped that his brother was looking down on him and giving him his blessing from above.

Zaire POV

A young man with dark brown skin, black hair and dark brown eyes tapped his fingers against the table of his make-over station impatiently as he waited for the butler's to finish with his make-over. He just couldn't wait for the life of him. He wanted to meet the Princess but he knew that it would be one more full day before he could meet her for the first time. He wondered if she was as kind as she made herself to be in the Reports.

He wanted to meet her so bad, to see Princess Sara's dark hair and blue eyes up close and to see her smile. He wanted to show her his love of music and maybe write a song for her. Maybe also cook for her as he told her about his family.

As he thought these thoughts, he winced, he usually loved to be alone but was finding it hard to imagine a situation when Princess Sara wasn't there. After years of watching the Report, he had grown to have a crush on her, one that he was embarrassed to admit to his Mom and Sister because they'd tease him. He just couldn't help it, there was just something about the Princess that drew him in.

But it wasn't just about the Princess either, he was in the Selection to help his family because ever since his Dad left them, his family had been struggling to even keep a roof over their heads and eat. His Mom, Kay and him would work overtime constantly so that his younger Sister, Arijiana could maintain a care-free existence for as long as possible. The higher caste and money would help support them too, so there was that plus of entering the Selection, but his main motivation was the Princess.

He wasn't sure if he'd ever be able to win her heart, but at the moment, all he wanted to do was to meet her and hopefully, they would get along.

Eirelyn POV

Eirelyn sighed as she fiddled with the locket bracelet in her hand; it was a simple bracelet with braided dark brown leather as the strap and beads of translucent greens and blues hung from it, the real treasure, however, was the bronze-colored locket that dangled in the middle. On one side of the locket, there was a picture of her dad, Aspen Leger, and the other side was a picture of James Glass, her first love.

She missed them both, but she couldn't help but feel as if it was more unfair to James whose life ended in the blink of an eye; he wasn't even twenty-five and his life had been so easily stolen.

"Lady Eirelyn?" She looked up to see her maids standing behind her, all looking at her with excited looks on their faces.

When the make-overs were done, the girls had all been led to their rooms and Eirelyn could honestly say that she was surprised by the sheer size of it. She had creamy-brown walls, a full dresser, and a closet with a bathroom and a four-poster bed; the room even had a balcony that overlooked the garden, a view that she couldn't be upset about.

"What is it?" She finally asked, turning back to her three maids. Her head maid was a nineteen-year-old girl named Alice and she had warm chocolate brown hair and bright brown eyes. The second maid was eighteen and had black hair and blue eyes. The last of her maids was possibly the youngest and had sunny blonde hair and large gray eyes.

"Do you require anything else?" Alice asked, looking at her with curious brown eyes.

"No, if you guys want to leave you can, go eat dinner and rest up while you can," Eirelyn said, smiling as best as she could. Dinner had been served in their rooms after the make-over breakfast would also be served in their rooms the next day; lunch would be served with the rest of the girls after make-overs were completely finished, but before the beginning etiquette lessons they would get and then after that, the girls would change once again and finally meet the royal family, most importantly the Prince and Princess. Tomorrow already sounded like an exhausting day.

"Remember, one of us will be back later tonight to stay with you," Alice said before all three of the maids curtsied and left her room, leaving her alone to her thoughts.

Eirelyn sighed and walked out to her balcony, looking up at the already dark sky and taking in the garden as well. The night seemed so peaceful, but she knew that it could shatter in a matter of seconds. Wordlessly, she took out her bracelet again and opened the locket, staring at the two faces of the people she had just recently lost. "I really hope that I'm making the right decision." She mumbled to herself.

She stared up at the brilliant stars one more time, they seemed to be shining even more brightly than usual, lighting up the dark sky with silvery light. She really loved the stars, they had always comforted her as a child and she doubted that she'd ever get tired of looking at them. She looked at them for as long as possible before the chill of the night made her shiver and consider going back inside.

She had just taken a step back when something down in the garden caught her eyes. Against her better judgment, Eirelyn leaned against the railing of her balcony and peeked down, seeing a shadow moving along the paths of the garden. She blinked and eventually saw a person emerge from the gardens.

The person in question looked pretty tall and built, he also dressed pretty formally in a dark gray suit and pants, who was he? He looked too nice to be a butler or a guard. She watched as he sat down at one of the stone benches in the garden, dropping his head tiredly into his hands and rubbing his face. The guy looked stressed and Eirelyn couldn't help but feel sympathy for him. Maybe he was staff at the palace and was overwhelmed with the idea of seventy plus people in the palace; she knew she would have been.

The guy ran his hand through his honey-colored hair and shook his head before standing up and looking around. She couldn't see his face, but she did notice how he rolled and straightened his shoulders as if he had just decided something and was going through with it.

Eirelyn couldn't help but smile as she backed away, not wanting to be seen, the guy seemed determined and she didn't want to interrupt him; but as luck would have it, that was when the guy looked up as if he could feel someone looking at him and their eyes locked and she froze.

The Prince. The boy or rather a young man that she had been looking at was Prince Payton. In her shock, Eirelyn's grip on her bracelet loosened and she could do nothing but watch helplessly as her bracelet fell onto a concrete path on the garden, and by Prince Payton's feet nonetheless.

She saw his eyes flicker to the bracelet before flickering back up to her and that's when Eirelyn hurried back into her room, nearly slamming the doors to her balcony shut in her haste, her heart beating a hundred miles an hour in her chest. What was she supposed to do now? She'd seen the Prince before she was supposed to and he'd seen her in nothing more than a night-dress and robe. And to top it all off she'd dropped her bracelet. She froze. She'd dropped her bracelet.

Eirelyn didn't even pause to think of the consequences of her actions before she was out of her door and hurrying down the stairs of the palace. She didn't care about the rules at the moment, she just wanted her bracelet back.

Somehow, by either luck or timing, she didn't run into any guards and found the doors to the garden opened. She had just run into the garden when she crashed into something hard.

Eirelyn let out a small squeak as she felt herself fall back towards the ground. She was sure she would have hit the ground when an arm quickly wrapped itself around her waist and pulled her back up against a solid and warm chest.

Eirelyn blinked a couple of times before slowly looking up into a pair of light hazel eyes. Familiar hazel eyes. The Prince was much more handsome in person; with his square jaw, rugged features and she noted that his honey-colored hair wasn't neat like when she saw him in the Reports but rather messy as if he'd ran his hand through his hair. She also noticed that there was a noticeable hint of green in those light hazel eyes.

"Hi," The Prince said after a moment, gazing down at her, a small smirk on his face. Did he notice her looking him over? She hoped not. "What are you doing here?"

"I…." Eirelyn blushed when she realized how close the two of them actually were. She pulled away from his grip and looked down, "I dropped something."

The Prince rose a brow and held up her bracelet with the locket open, "This?"

Eirelyn nodded mutely and reached for her bracelet put he pulled it out of her reach, much to her surprise. "Hey!" She definitely broke protocol with interacting with royals then because she leaned pressed against his chest as she went on her toes to get her bracelet back, but he held it over her head and out of her reach while chuckling.

"Can I ask you a question?" The Prince asked, steadying her as she finally gave up.

"You're the Prince, you don't need permission," She snapped, crossing her arms as she glared at him, Prince or not, she did not appreciate being bullied.

"I knew your Dad and James, I also know that you dated James, I knew him, he was on my guard rotation often." The Prince began hesitantly.

Eirelyn froze when she heard that he knew her Dad and James, and her heart broke even more. Of course, he did, they worked in the palace so it shouldn't have been so surprising to her. "What do you want to know?" She asked, her voice shaking as she felt tears prick her eyes.

"Why are you here?" The Prince asked curiously, "You just lost your Dad and boyfriend and from what James told me about you, you wouldn't put your name into the Selection. I also didn't think you'd be a girl that moved on fast."

At that, Eirelyn wrenched herself away from his grip and glared at him. Her anger burning inside her and she knew it was going to burst out, "For your information, I don't want to be here. My best friend and siblings sent in my form even though they knew I was grieving. Even if I hadn't been with James I would never consider you being with you. Some entitled Prince that gets to choose from thirty-five girls and in the end, people are going to get hurt" She couldn't reign in her annoyance, anger or sarcasm even though she was talking to a Prince and she knew she should stop but all her anger and pent up frustration was spilling out and he was just there. She had no control in how everything had happened, she didn't even really get a say on her make-over, "You're not worth the effort so you should just send me home before this even starts."

She watched the expressions change on his face, going from surprise to shock to annoyance and finally anger. "I can't send you home tonight. The Selection hasn't even started yet." He said, anger brimming in his own eyes.

"So what? You need all thirty-five girl preening over you for the cameras tomorrow night?" Eirelyn demanded.

"Lady Eirelyn," The Prince's voice was low and dangerous and she felt a shiver go up her back. But if it was because of him saying her name or fear she didn't know. "I suggest you go back to your room and stay there until tomorrow."

The smart thing to do would have been to do as he said, but Eirelyn couldn't stop herself from saying one more thing, "You're a conceited pig." She snapped before she turned on her heels and marched back to her room, not even waiting to see his reaction.

It wasn't until she reached her room did she realize what she really did. She had insulted the Crown Prince of Illéa; the person who could have her flogged or executed. Fear started to build in her and she was expecting guards to burst into her room at any moment, but that' when she realized something else; she hadn't even gotten her bracelet back. Damn it.
