Chapter 21- The Dating Life

Rebecca POV

Rebecca strutted confidently down the hallway towards breakfast, knowing perfectly well that she looked her absolute best, the best that she had ever looked. The dress she was wearing was an intense rose-red and made of lace, the dress itself hugged her chest and waist perfectly while the skirt of her dress swooped dramatically around her lean legs.

She was the best-dressed girl there was in the palace, she was sure that she was even better dressed than all three of the Princesses. There was no way that her appearance wouldn't catch Prince Payton's attention.

She smiled as she entered the dining room and immediately saw the royal family sitting at the head of the room and there were five long rectangular tables set in front of the head table with fourteen seats at each of the tables. She supposed that was enough, there were seventy of them there, so the many tables were necessary. Her smile widened as she bowed to the front table, meeting Payton's eyes as he looked up and smiled at her.

He had been completely warm and welcoming the day before and they had talked for a long time with him being interested in her background because of her two-caste education. When she got back up, Rebecca quickly walked to the table that would put her closest to the royal family, happiness filling her when she saw that there were still seats open. The other selected must have been too cowardly to sit next to the royals in a formal setting. Pathetic. They would never win the Prince over in that way.

She gracefully sat down at a seat next to a pretty girl with black hair pulled into a bun, her dark gray dress fitting snug around her.

"Good morning," She said, trying to be pleasant, she already knew that she could become Queen, but she didn't want to be too unpleasant towards the other girls. She knew that if she was horrible to the other girls, she knew that the Prince may kick her out for bad behavior.

"Morning," the girl said, turning to face Rebecca and giving her a slight smile, her dark brown eyes taking Rebecca in. "I'm Adelaide, I don't think I spoke to you yesterday."

Rebecca's eyes widened and she suppressed a smile at her luck. "You're Adelaide Huntingdon-Rhodes?" She asked, excitement in her voice. To think she'd be sitting next to a girl who belonged to the family who owned the diamond business.

Adelaide nodded, "Who are you?" She asked, sounding more guarded than before and Rebecca quickly took note of that, she didn't want to upset one of the most powerful families of Illéa.

"Rebecca Bennett, I'm from St. George." She said, before taking some eggs and toast onto her plate. Those seemed like the safest bet when it came to breakfast, though she did see some fruit tarts as well; maybe she'd eat those later. "How are you finding the palace?"

Adelaide shrugged, looking disinterested, "It's fine, I have to say though, it's strange, I swear that my mansion is almost as glamorous as this place." She didn't say anything else and went back to her food, completely giving Rebecca the cold shoulder as she continued to eat breakfast.

Rebecca didn't say anything, but she couldn't help but feel offended at the same time. She knew that the Huntingdon-Rhodes family were twos, but she had been taught in the same school as twos, had the same education and while many of them back at home hadn't treated her that nicely at least they had acknowledged her to some degree and hadn't ignored her.

With a small glare towards Adelaide's direction Rebecca went back to her own breakfast, She scanned the table silently, looking at the other girls and not paying attention to any of the men; she had to admit to herself that some were extremely handsome but the only reason for her to be at the palace was to marry Payton and nothing else. That marriage would elevate her family to the highest possible position, and it would also help Juliette marry who she wanted without there being any complications. How could Alexander's family deny him marrying a Princess anyways?

Finally, Rebecca's eyes landed on a girl with fair skin, light blonde hair in curls and warm brown eyes. She wore a rose-colored dress that flowed nicely down her body and Rebecca noticed that she was a few pounds over curvy, but still very pretty, she thought about introducing herself but thought better of it. She'd talk to her when they were in the Women's Room.

Her eyes went back to the main table and she smiled when she saw Payton looking over at her table. He saw her smile and smiled back, nodding his head before his light hazel eyes went over to look over the other girls, a thoughtful look on his face. She really hoped he talked to her today, she wanted him to in front of all the girls and boys here; it would give the illusion that she was more intimate with him than the other girls were if he chose to talk to her first.

"Lady Eirelyn," Rebecca almost jumped at Payton's voice, her heart sinking into her stomach. He hadn't chosen to speak to her first. Her eyes immediately searched for the girl Payton had called out to; it was easy to find her, every other girl was staring at her too; the jealousy in their eyes shining in varying degrees.

Rebecca took in Lady Eirelyn's dark red hair and brilliant green eyes and tanned skin, she was beautiful. Immediately, she felt jealous and angry, what did this girl have that she didn't? What had she done to earn Payton's attention that she hadn't done? How was she better than her?

"Yes, Prince Payton?" Lady Eirelyn asked, looking nervous, her cheeks turning red at all the attention that was on her.

"I was wondering if you'd like to go on a picnic with me for dinner." Prince Payton said, a smile on his face as he gazed at her.

Rebecca felt her fist tighten around her utensils. That date should have gone to her. Not some other girl.

"I would love to Prince Payton," Lady Eirelyn said, giving him a soft smile in return before looking back down at her plate.

Payton smiled back before rising to his feet, clearing his throat to gain all the girls' attention. "If I may have a moment of your time ladies," Payton began, his eyes seeking out specific girls and much to Rebecca's dismay, his eyes didn't land on her again, "I would like Ladies, Leslie, Willa, Giselle, Hannah, Rowan, Madeline, Allison, Aprilyn and Patricia to stay behind after breakfast."

Rebecca saw some of the girls look at each other in excitement and the jealousy seemed to triple in the room. She knew because she was one of the girls who felt the jealousy spike in her.

That was it. Rebecca ate the last bites of her breakfast, calmly stood up before the royal family and curtsied before leaving the dining room. She was shaking slightly, and she needed to get herself under control. Just because she wasn't the first date didn't mean the Prince wouldn't be hers. Just because he wanted to talk to nine girls before her didn't mean he wouldn't eventually choose her. She just had to wait for him to ask her for a date. She would be his Queen. No matter what.

Reese POV

Reese took a deep breath as she exited the dining room. After Payton had asked Eirelyn out and then asked nine other girls to stay behind, the dining room had quieted down significantly. Some of the girls eating quickly before excusing themselves; some girls had even cast Eirelyn glares before leaving as if she had wronged them somehow.

Personally, Reese didn't understand it. Payton had chosen to have his first date with Eirelyn. That was all. It wasn't as if he had picked his future Queen. All the other girls still had a chance too; none of them had lost anything.

"Eirelyn is lucky, isn't she?" Reese looked up to see Alyssa, one of the girls who she had befriended last night. She was nice and more importantly, she didn't treat her any differently because of her chair.

At first, Reese didn't respond, she didn't want to give anyone the wrong impression and she really wanted to think out her response before she answered Alyssa. Why had Payton asked Eirelyn to be his first date? Did the redhead actually want to go on a date? "I guess. I'm actually more curious about why he wanted to talk to the other girls."

"You mean the nine he asked to stay behind?" Alyssa asked blue eyes narrowed in thought. "Maybe he's asking them to go on dates with him?"

"He would have asked in the same way he did Eirelyn," Reese said certainly. The Prince hadn't seemed like a fool to her. He had seemed extremely smart to her in their first meeting. He had also been extremely welcoming and understanding. In the short time that it had been since her name was announced, he had installed ramps in all parts of the palace and had even given her competent maids that knew how to help her. He was even worried about insulting her and told her to tell him if she needed anything extra. She doubted he'd ask nine girls to go on a date with him after asking one out.

"Maybe he just wants a few more minutes with them," Reese said thoughtfully, meeting Alyssa's blue eyes. "Maybe he didn't think he got to know them properly."

Alyssa nodded, "Maybe," She looked at Reese then before smiling, "Do you think we can use the kitchen? Maybe we can cook after our lessons with Amelia."

"You want me to cook?" Reese asked, a frown on her face. "How would I do that?"

"Like anyone else," Alyssa replied confidently, "You're only limited to what you believe that you can do. You should try cooking Reese, it'll relax you. You need to learn how to have fun."

Reese frowned, "How can cooking be fun?" She asked.

"Cooking is like storytelling," Alyssa said, trying to win the younger girl over, "You can tell a story with food. It shows your skill and the places you've been to. I think you'd be surprised how much cooking can reveal about a person."

Reese didn't respond for a moment, part of her did want to try, but back at home, her parents had never let her near the stove when the flame was on in fear that she'd hurt herself. Maybe it was time for her to try something new. "If Amelia says yes, then I'll cook with you."

Alyssa beamed at her, "Great! I'm sure that she'll say yes. Especially if we make it to the lesson on time." She looked at the clock before slipping behind Reese and gripping the handlebars of her wheelchair. "Do you mind?"

Reese stared at Alyssa for what felt like the longest time, "I do…. But at this rate, we'll be late for the lessons with Amelia. As long as I don't fall off my chair, you can push me." She said after a long moment. Reese loved to think of herself as an independent young woman, so she liked to roll her own chair forward, but with some exceptions, she was fine with people pushing her, mainly her parents.

Alyssa smiled and quickly pushed the chair down the hallway, "You won't regret the cooking classes you'll get from me." She promised hurrying down the halls towards the Women's Room.

And hopefully, she wouldn't regret giving Prince Payton a chance too, Reese thought to herself, fingers curling around her armrest. She wanted him to be a good man. One who she could give her heart to, one who would improve the situation for people like her.

Eirelyn POV

Eirelyn ran her fingers through her loose curls one more time as she waited for Payton to show up for their date. Why did he have to ask her first? She paced around her room tirelessly. Her maids had changed her into riding clothes, much to her shock. Were they going to ride horses too?

Finally, there was a knock on her door and Alice opened it to reveal Payton, a basket in his hands and an excited smile on his face. "You look beautiful," He said, offering her his arm which she took.

"Thank you," Eirelyn said, a blush spreading across her face as he led her out of her room and out of the palace towards the stables. "Are we horseback riding?" She asked after a moment, trying to hide the nervousness in her voice.

Payton blinked. "Yes, there's a lake on the palace grounds, it's a beautiful view and I thought it would be a good place for a date. The easiest way to reach there is by horseback," He looked nervous then, biting his lip, "Do you not know how to ride?"

"I do." Eirelyn said quickly, her fingers tightening around his arm, "I just wasn't sure." They lapsed back into silence and she let out a sigh. Part of her was excited about this date but at the same time, she also felt guilty. Was it too soon to try to move on from James?

"I should apologize for this morning," Payton finally said, looking down at her with eager eyes. "I saw the look some girls threw your way after I asked you for a date, I didn't mean to paint a target on your back."

Eirelyn shook her head, "It's not your fault. Even if you had asked me privately, the others would have eventually found out and I'd be in the same situation." She didn't say anything else because that was when they reached the stables and two stable boys led out one incredibly large looking gray horse. Were they riding together on that gigantic thing?

Eirelyn also noticed that there were camera crews around the stables filming their actions and taking pictures. "It must be horrible to have your dates documented." She said.

Payton shook his head, "They're just here at the stables to get a few pictures. Once we get into the forest, we'll be alone for the rest of the date."

"Promise?" Eirelyn asked, looking up to meet his eyes, she knew she'd be able to see if he was being honest with her if she stared into his eyes. She didn't think she was ready for every single step of her life to be documented on camera; especially while she was alone.

In response, Payton pulled her against his chest without warning, his free hand going around her waist as he tugged her closer against his chest. "Promise." He said, a smirk on his face as he saw how red her face was getting. "I want it to be just us."

He held her against him for a moment longer and that's when Eirelyn noticed the camera taking a picture of them and scoffed. Of course, all of this was for the media. He had to look good and look like he was genuinely trying to find a wife. How was she supposed to believe anything he said when it was backed by motive? Was everything just a pose to him? Nothing but acting? She shook her head, she had to believe it wasn't all an act if she wanted to give him a chance.

"Only one horse?" She asked, pushing herself away from him and giving herself space to breathe. She honestly thought if she stayed in his grip a moment longer, she wouldn't want to leave it. He had felt so warm and secure that it made her forget about her past grief about James and her Dad too easily and she hated it. She didn't want to be over James. James had been her first love and there was no way or reason that a guy like Payton could replace him, even if he was the Prince.

"This is a date after all," Payton said, looking amused as he handed the picnic basket to one of the stable boys to attach to the saddle. He then turned to her and motioned to the gray horse, "Let me help you." He didn't wait for her consent, he just hoisted her up onto the saddle, making sure that she didn't topple off before climbing on behind her, his arms going on either side of her as he took the reins.

"Does he have a name?" Eirelyn asked, gripping onto the reins for dear life as the horse started to trot forward along with Payton's urging. Why were they already moving? Weren't the stable boys supposed to make sure that they were securely on the horses?

Payton didn't respond until they were alone on a wide trail that was surrounded by lush trees and bushes on either side. "This horse's name is Misty. Julia named her."

"Misty," Eirelyn said, testing the name of the horse out on her tongue. "Not a name I thought a noble would name a horse."

"What were you expecting? Ridiculous exuberant names like Augustine or Clementine? Maybe even Theodosia?" Payton laughed, his chest pressing warmly against Eirelyn's back, causing her to shift uncomfortably. He must have realized this because he pulled her even closer to him and she could only imagine the grin on his face. "Don't move too much, you'll slip off."

Eirelyn rolled her eyes, "It would be your fault," She muttered, even if she was laughing slightly. He was right, after all, this horse was large and she did not want to see what would happen if she fell.

Payton laughed right along with her. "I'd never let you fall or get hurt." They continued to ride on in silence and Eirelyn found that she was thoroughly enjoying his company. She liked how he laughed, deep in his chest, but it also seemed to echo around them. She also liked how being surrounded by his arms made her feel extremely safe and protected.

Finally, they reached the lake that Payton had wanted them to go to and Eirelyn was left breathless, the lake was a beautiful gleaming blue-green with the sunlight sparkling off the water like sparks. Even more, was that the lake was surrounded by a canopy of lush green trees.

"It's beautiful," Eirelyn said, looking back over her shoulder at Payton and smiling at him, "Has this always been here?"

Payton nodded, "As far as I know," He carefully slid off the horse before helping her down. "Did you like the ride?" He was looking at her with open light hazel eyes and Eirelyn wondered how he could be Prince. He seemed far too honest and eager to her. Soft. That was what he was.

"The scenery was really nice," Eirelyn nodded, a small smirk playing across her lips as she met his eyes, "The backrest was a bit stiff though."

Payton paused from getting the picnic basket from the horse before laughing. "Well, I'm glad to be of service."

"Why the picnic too?" Eirelyn asked curiously as she watched him lead them to a stone porch where he started to set up the picnic. "The horse ride would have been enough for a first date."

"I wanted to spend time with you," Payton confessed, a smile on his face as he looked at her. "I wanted to get to know you,"

Eirelyn stared at him stunned and uncertain, "Isn't that what you're supposed to do?"

Payton nodded, "But you're the one I want to know, out of all of them. I thought we could just talk about anything you want." He started to pull out sandwiches and biscuits, fruits, dessert.

"Because of my relationship with my Dad and James?" She asked, sounding guarded.

"At first, that was my main reason and then I met you and you…. Well yelled at me." He said, looking at her intensely. "I know we've only spoken twice but I like you Eirey."

"You're not that bad yourself," She said blushing as she sat down next to him. He poured both of them some cider, handing one glass to her before taking a sip.

The two of them ate quietly, and every once in awhile, Eirelyn looked up to see Payton looking at her, a fond smile on his lips. But every time he was caught, he would blush bright red and look away, either sipping at his drink or quickly taking a bite out of his sandwich.

"I love to draw and paint," Eirelyn said suddenly, causing Payton's light hazel eyes to flicker to her face. "It relaxes me and because it's a challenge, even if people say that family members look extremely alike or that a daughter is the spitting image of her Mom, I always find those small differences that make them stand apart. There's also the color schemes of what I draw, sometimes it's hard to get that exact shade that I want but I don't mind."

Payton appraised her, one brow arched up as he leaned casually back on his hands. "Maybe you can sketch me next time."

"It's a date," Eirelyn said before thinking. She blushed immediately when she realized what she said. "I mean-" She cut off when Payton laughed.

"Aren't I the one that's supposed to ask you out on a date?" He smiled at her, his light hazel eyes glowing with amusement.

"I guess," Eirelyn said, looking away from him before glancing back up with nervous green eyes. "Is that really against the rules?"

Payton grinned, "I mean, officially I'm supposed to set up all the dates, but knowing that you want a next time is probably the best thing that I've learned all day."

Eirelyn grinned back, "What about you? I've heard all your hobbies from the rest of the girls and I know you told me some things but is there anything you left out?"

"Well…. I want to be a good ruler. At the very least as good as my Dad. I want to finish what he started. I want to end the caste system." Payton said, giving a sheepish smile.

"Do you think you could?" Eirelyn asked, eagerly, it was a topic that her mom was extremely sensitive about. She thought that the caste system was abysmal and unfair. Created for the people who craved power. "It's been about twenty years and your Father still hasn't been able to dissolve the system."

"I will do everything that I can to end the caste," Payton said seriously. "It's the root of most of our problems. There are rebels because of how unfair this society has been to them. How can we expect peace when the lower caste are starving and struggling to make ends meet while the upper caste is able to fill their stomachs and achieve their dreams? Of course, there is still unrest and the people get more and more restless," The intensity in his eyes made Eirelyn breathless and her heartbeat fast in her chest. "When I'm King, there will be fewer provisions for the rich and more food and opportunity for the people who really need it. The people that our laws truly effect will finally have a say."

Eirelyn swallowed. "That won't sit well for the upper caste. Instead of having rebels that fight you because of poverty you'll have the rich rebelling against you because you'll have taken away what gives them power."

"I won't take away everything," Payton sighed, how the hell had they gotten into politics. "I just plan on evening out the taxes and giving more shelter and food to the lower caste. I also want to see them have the same job opportunities as the people in the higher caste and I'll even have a few who grew in my council. Of course, I'm hoping that with the caste gone, it'll be easier."

"You're setting yourself up for a challenging rule," Eirelyn said, a sense of dread filling her. If he went through with his ideas, he'd be the hero of the less fortunate but at the same time make himself enemies with the people who would do anything to hold onto their power. She really hoped he knew what he was doing.

Payton sighed, "I want to make my Dad proud and let him see his goals come to fruition, even if it isn't in his rule. He should see his dreams be accomplished." He suddenly shook his head and gave her a small smile. "I'm sorry Eirey, I asked you on a date and then went off on you about politics. This probably isn't one of your top dates."

Eirelyn was silent for a moment before she smiled back at him, "Well…. It is actually. Since James was always at the palace, we never had much time together and we didn't go on dates much because if James was back then that would mean my Dad was back and then we'd do everything as a family since both of them had so little time off. I'm glad you told me about the type of King you want to be but…. are you allowed to? Shouldn't you be telling your future Queen your plans for your administration? This doesn't feel like something you should tell the first girl you date in your Selection." She had looked away from him as she spoke but looked back up when he gently grabbed her hands in his.

"I told you because I trust you," Payton said seriously. "If it was any other girl…" He trailed off before continuing, "Even if we just met and this is our first date… and who knows? Maybe I am speaking to my future Queen. "I'd like my Queen to support me but have a voice of her own. She'd have to care about the people of Illéa and be kind and courageous. She's challenging me to be the best person I can be." He tugged her closer, his light hazel eyes looking intensely into her bright green ones. "…maybe you're her."

Eirelyn took a shuddering breath in, her cheeks reddening by his proximity as well as the intensity in his eyes. It was as if he was taking in everything, from her tanned skin to her dark red hair and bright emerald green eyes. He was looking at her as if he could see into her very soul and part of her wondered what he saw? Did he see a broken girl that needed to be fixed? A girl unsuited to be his Queen despite what he had said just moments before?

Where had all this come from anyway? How had things between them escalate so quickly? Everything between them seemed to suddenly become so intimate and intense in the span of a few minutes. He was speaking to her as if he'd already chosen her as his future Queen as if he loved her but he couldn't. She couldn't love him and she didn't. She was still getting over James' death and his closeness was making it hard to think. To be with the Prince would be betraying James' memory and she couldn't, wouldn't do that. Even now, when she was embraced in Payton's arms, she couldn't get rid of the sound of James' laugh or the way his hair fell across his brow or the light in his eyes as he looked at her. She thought about him every minute of every day and how her heart felt as if it would shatter because he was gone.

She thought of James even as Payton's face got closer to hers, conflict in his eyes for a moment before he leaned down and gently brushed his lips against hers in a soft kiss.

The kiss was sweet and Eirelyn found herself closing her eyes as he continued to press warm feather light kisses against her lips but as he did so she couldn't help think that his hair was darker and his eyes were a deep blue instead of light hazel. James.

It was only when he pulled her ever closer and she felt the heat radiate from his chest that she snapped out of her daze. This wasn't James she was kissing. It was the Prince. Without thinking, Eirelyn whipped out her hand there was a sharp crack sound. The sound of skin hitting skin.

Eirelyn blinked as she felt Payton jerk and his face turn to the side, the cheek facing her red and that's when it hit her. She had just slapped the Crown Prince right across his pretty face. She stared dumbstruck at her hand before glancing up at Payton and saw him looking back at her with wide eyes.

She saw disbelief and shock before hurt and anger set in. She watched as his jaw tightened and her heart stopped. She wondered what he would do. Would he have her flogged or arrested? Publicly shame her and her family? It didn't matter, all she knew was that she was done with the Selection. After all, she had just assaulted the Prince.

"I-" She started to say but Payton coldly cut her off.

"We should head back, it's getting late and no doubt the rest of the palace will be wondering where we are." He said voice cold and a bit harsh. He stood up and together they collected their picnic in complete silence. They rode back in silence too and the difference from before was a stark contrast.

Payton rode with his entire body stiff and Eirelyn didn't lean against him, instead, she tried to keep her body pressed forward so they didn't touch. The only hint she got that he hadn't completely closed off to her was when she was startled by a bird taking flight and almost fell off the saddle. Payton's arm immediately wrapped around her waist, steadying her and he didn't let go until they almost reached the stables. Either that or he only kept his hand around her because she refused to let him go after that.

It was only after they made their way back to the palace that he started to speak to her again but she was confused when they had reached the stables, Payton had pulled her close, a warm smile on his face and when the stable hands asked how the date was he had assured them it was wonderful leaving her wondering if she had accidentally hit him too hard.

"If I were you Lady Eirelyn," She winced at his formal, cold tone, "I wouldn't mention slapping me."

When all she could do was blink at him in stunned silence Payton sighed, running a hand through his honey blonde hair. "I won't through you into a cell if that was what you were wondering. Just don't mention to any of the other selected what happened at the end of our date. Just say we had a nice picnic and talked."

Eirelyn nodded silently before they continued back up to her room and that's when a thought struck her. "You're not…. sending me home?"

Payton looked down at her with calm, guarded eyes. "I haven't decided yet." He said truthfully, his hand going up to the cheek she's slapped. "I certainly can't have you hitting me after every date."

Eirelyn blushed, looking away before meeting his eyes again. "I am sorry about that Prince Payton. I just…" How could she explain that she had thought he was James for a moment as he held her? "You just took me by surprise." She finished lamely.

"I bet," Payton said, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "Are you…." He trailed off, doubt flickering in his eyes. He studied her features intently, a worried frown on his face. "Have a good night Lady Eirelyn," He said abruptly and that's when she realized that they had reached her door. He gently raised the back of her hand to his lips, in a quick, caste kiss but that didn't stop the warmth that rushed through her veins or the slight blush on her cheeks. He gave her the barest hint of a smile before turning to leave but Eirelyn grabbed his wrist.

"Payton," She said, waiting until he turned to face her, her heart beating erratically in her chest. Why did she always have to push people? Why couldn't she leave it at goodnight? Did she always need things to end on a bad note instead of good? She knew that what came next wouldn't end the night in a good tone, but she had to know. "What are you trying to ask me?"

His brows furrowed and he frowned but he still went on to say, "Are you serious about staying here? About becoming my Queen and more importantly my wife? Do you think you can love me?" Payton asked flatly. He didn't look like he expected an answer and it was a good thing since she didn't know what to tell him."

"Goodnight Lady Eirelyn," Payton said again, this time a noticeable chill in his tone as he walked away from her without looking back. Eirelyn just stared at him stunned before running her hand through her dark red curls. What the hell was wrong with her?

When she entered her room her maids immediately asked questions about her date and she answered in short responses, saying that she was tired and that she'd tell them tomorrow. However, as she lay in bed, Payton's last question haunted her mind and wouldn't allow her to sleep.

Do you think you can love me? She wanted to say no, she couldn't love him but that was a lie. Part of her was already falling for him and that scared her more than anything. What had she gotten herself into?

What do you think? I hope I haven't lost my touch with this story! Again please review and the next chapter should be up in a few days! Thank you!
