Bella POV.
I was tired, but I kept driving, my back stiff, seeing the green all around, chucking at myself.
'Home sweet home.'
'Don't start it.'
After arriving in Forks, I frowned at my car's panel, showing me something was wrong with my tire, so I stopped and walked around, seeing that my back tire was flat.
"Great." I looked up, thinking this was the first time in years that I couldn't see the sun, smiling slightly at the clouds. I sniffed myself and groaned... I was disgusting. I looked around for some time, taking in the layout. I was too tired to change a tire right now, and no one was driving this way, so I took my bag and locked my car. I'd make sure to come back with Charlie to pick her up.
'People will call you a weirdo for giving genders to inanimate objects.'
'I don't care, she's a lady, and she's beautiful.'
I turned and walked towards my destination, thinking about my plan. I came back to this place for three reasons.
The first was to rearrange my strategy, as I couldn't be in Phoenix expecting to find one of them, so I came here, using the first knowledge I had about those vermin. They didn't walk under sunlight.
I didn't expect to find them here, because I knew how to look for the signals, and where there was one of them, death always followed. Forks had its last death almost a decade ago, and it was due to old age I guess, so this was the last place one of them would be right now, but it was still a better guess as to where one of them could be than Phoenix.
The second was to be near Charlie, not because he was my father, I couldn't even think of him like that anymore, but because in here, he was Chief Swan, and his police credentials would be convenient to me. I'd find a way to use his access to the police database to track a few things.
And third, because my mother lived here. She used to tell me she hated the city and its depressing weather at first, but after I was born, she told me about how I changed her mind. She could live here as long as I was with her, she said I became her second sun.
This was a good place to start, and I had a lot of work to do. I had money now, and that would make things easier, but not much, because money could buy anything, if we're talking about humans, who want to live their lives to its fullest, even at the cost of others, but when talking about immortal beings, money had no meaning.
It was a long walk to the house, and I groaned to myself.
'Should've just changed the freaking tire.'
'Too late for that now.'
I could actually remember the streets, seeing that I was past half the way, crossing a small bridge just to hear a car slowing down by my side. My hand instinctively reached for my waist, but I didn't have a gun, remembering I left mine in Phoenix.
"You ok, man?" A short-haired blond boy asked, frowning. He looked young, maybe my age or younger, and since I was hooded, he couldn't even tell I was a woman.
"Yea, I'm ok." I said with a nod and his eyes widened.
"You're a girl- You shouldn't be walking in the rain- Want a ride?" He seems preoccupied and slightly more interested now.
"No, but thank you." I started walking again, and he followed me again, so I stopped and stared at him.
"Seriously, I'm just trying to be nice, It's freezing today. I'm Mike." He said with a smile.
"Nice to meet you, Mike. Listen, Mike, if you follow me one more time, we're going to have a problem, now fuck off and have a nice day." I said coldly and walked away from his frozen face, looking over my shoulder to see him shaking his head, driving past me without stopping this time, going about his way.
I arrived at Charlie's house exhausted, my boots soaked, my legs hurting, dying for a shower and some heat. I took off my hoodie to not be confused for a robber and get shot and knocked on the door, hearing walking.
Suddenly, Charlie opened the door, and we both frowned.
'Did he seriously just open his door without asking who it was first? A cop?'
'Nothing happens in Forks.' I reminded myself.
'Oh, right.'
"Bells- Isabella, I told you to call me when you-" He started, but I was too tired for the small talk, so I just shrugged with an impatient face.
"Well, come in and dry off, where are your things?"
"In my back, I got a flat just around the west exit." I said while walking inside and pointing to my big bag, mostly with my clothes and books.
"You walked all the way from there? You could've called."
"I just didn't want to wait, so I walked. All my things are here, but I'd like to go pick my car later- Although I need a shower first, and a nap."
"Just give me your keys, and I'll ask for one of my boys to get your car." Well, that would simplify things, I could just pass out without worrying now.
"Thanks." I said, giving him my keys.
"And all your things are in the bag? Just that?" He asked while closing the door and walking to stand in front of the staircase.
"What can I say? I'm a minimalist." I smirked.
"Well, come up, I just finished cleaning your room."
After he pointed me to the room and told me where everything was, I thanked him, and he walked down the stairs, giving me privacy. I heard him on the phone with someone, telling them to come by the house with another person, get my keys and bring my car back. I looked around and refrained from a smile. It was still cozy like a remember, the wall painted with blue stars, and the rainbow curtains I hated, but she made me put it anyway. The room had almost the same space as my single-room apartment in Phoenix, so this would do nicely.
After a slow hot shower, I thought about unpacking, but I was so tired that I just laid down and stared at the ceiling for some time. I looked aside and imagined my mother with that bright smile she gave me when we slept in this very same bed, but after making my imaginary version of her disappear, my gaze fell on the mirror that I was staring at without noticing. I saw my dead gaze and sighed.
"I'm doing the best I can- I'm sorry I became like this, mom, but I know you'd understand, right?"
'No, she would want you to move on, you idiot. You really believe she would like to see what you did with your life? You really think she would be able to smile, seeing how empty inside you are? How broken you are?' I thought fiercely at myself.
No, she wouldn't be happy, but she wasn't here anymore. She didn't exist anymore, and all the memories, all the love, everything she left for me after she was gone became fuel to keep my rage burning, and I intended to let it burn me until the end. No one would make me change my mind, not even myself.
I woke up the next morning and walked downstairs to meet Charlie, heating some lasagna in the microwave.
"Want some?"
"What is it?"
"Meat lasagna."
I didn't want to start the day with something that heavy, but I was starving, so I said yes and he placed another plate in the microwave, handling me the one he had already heated.
After he sat, he placed the keys on the table and I looked to the front of the house, seeing my car's roof outside.
"It was a nail, I already got your tire mended, and is back in place."
"Thanks, how much I own you?"
"Nothing, girl, don't worry about it."
I nodded and started eating. I didn't know if he made this, but it was soggy and tasteless, but I still ate it, not sure if he would be hurt if I spit it out, and honestly, too hungry to throw it away.
"I was almost closing a deal on a truck for you, but your car seems nice."
"She is. She's a drinker, but I can't complain, she's fast."
"Where did you get the money?" He asked cautiously.
"I told you I created an app with my friends, didn't I?" I tried to remember the very few texts I had sent him over the years, just to let him know I was still alive. I had to create an excuse for my criminal money, so I said I invented some bullshit app and sold my shares to make money.
"Yes, but how much would something like that make? I don't see being enough to buy a car like that." He frowned.
"It was plenty. I got a small share, so it only paid like fifty thousand, but I used practically everything to buy the car, so now I'm spent."
"Oh." He nodded.
I walked to the kitchen to see what kind of food he kept in the house, imagining his reaction to my bank account balance. If he knew how much I made after my little adventure, he'd flip. Let's just say it would do no good to tell him his 17-year-old daughter had over 200 million dollars in her bank account at the moment.
I sighed and took out my cellphone. This kind of money would take too much attention if moved at once, so I set my offshore account to periodically send values that wouldn't raise any suspicion. By the end of the week, my account in here would have at least 2 million dollars, and that was more than I could even imagine spending. By the values I set, it would take a year for all my money to be sent, but I had nothing but time, and honestly, nothing to spend the money on yet.
After a fast kitchen inspection, I turned and tilted my head.
"What do you eat?" I asked him, and he turned on the couch where he had just turned on the TV.
"Huh? Ah, pretty much pizza, and fried fish." He had a yellow smile, and I felt something sharp hitting my dead heart. He looked so lost. I wondered how he survived by himself all these years. Why didn't he remarry?
'Were you able to forget Renée?'
'No.'
'He's just like you. He could never move on.'
"Mind if I take care of the food from now on?" I asked to be polite, but not really waiting for his approval. I wasn't going to eat pizza and fish for the rest of my days here, and neither would he.
"You can cook?" He sounded like a child whose dream just became true.
"A little." I said not to brag while taking a look at the jar with a couple of twenties labeled as food money.
"That's great- I mean... if you want to." He tried to sound indifferent, but his eyes were shining.
"I'll go out to buy a few things. Where is the closest supermarket? You have a supermarket in here, right?" I eyed him desperately.
"Haha- Of course we do. You want me to drive you there?"
"Don't worry, I'll take my car."
"All right, just be careful because the roads here are always slippery."
"Got it, I promise to go under 20."
"Seriously?" He asked frowning, and I giggled.
"No, but I'll take care, don't worry about it."
He smiled, and I almost felt troubled for lying to him.
Almost.
After I finished my third lap around the city, I had most of the stores memorized. The exits and where the precinct and the hospital were, too. I saw a nice Mercedes parked outside and wondered how many patients they had for a doctor to afford something like that in here. I mean, holy shit.
I finished my reckon and drove to the supermarket, and it wasn't that far from the house. I quickly began taking the basic ingredients, thinking for a while, taking a few more to spice things up. It wouldn't hurt to get a little serious and give Charlie something good to eat for once. That Lasagna was disgusting.
After I filled a cart with everything I wanted and some to spare, I went to pay for it and snorted when I saw the cashier.
"Hey, Mike." I said as I started giving him the products.
The blond boy frowned and tilted his head in confusion.
"Do I know you?" He asked, blushing.
I gave him half a smirk before saying in a low voice:
"Fuck off, Mike."
His baffled expression was funny.
"You're that girl- You're very rude, you know that? I was just trying to offer you some help." He said, pulling products and registering them.
"Oh, I get it. Since this is a small town and everyone knows each other, this kind of behavior is normal, huh?"
"Offering help?"
"I mean, don't be offended, dude, but you're from a small town where nothing happens, but out there, especially when you're a girl, you don't enter strangers' cars, no matter what."
He opened his mouth to say something, but after seeing my gaze, realization seemed to hit him, and he took a few moments to recover.
"Sorry, I didn't think about that."
"Hey, don't worry, man, just don't do that again to people you don't know. I'm guessing you're an ok guy, but that settles a precedent. Nobody should trust people they don't know, especially girls." I scolded him and he just stood quiet. He didn't look like a bad guy, but didn't look like a good one either.
"How are you carrying all this stuff if you don't have a car?" He frowned, and I could see he was deciding if he should offer another ride.
"What did I just tell you?"
"But you know me now, right?"
I shook my head and moved to put my card and pay for my stuff.
"All right, you don't trust people, but you have to start somewhere, right? You didn't even tell me your name." He said with a wondrous tone after everything was coded and I had already pressed my password, placing everything inside the cart before turning.
"You know what? Let's keep it that way. Thanks." I mirrored his tone and left.
The next days consisted of me, trying to understand how the hell a place could have so much rain. It literally never stopped raining, even when it stopped raining, it was still raining.
I thought Forks would be a place I could get used to easily, but I was wrong. It was full of insects, you were unable to leave and arrive with dry socks, you couldn't drive fast, and the internet in here was amusing, if I could even define that as internet, I just thought about it as broken cables.
Charlie had me set up in the only high school this place had, so I could finish my high school years, well, the two left for me to graduate, and I couldn't be more stressed about it. I knew I had to put up a facade of someone who's not living solely for revenge, but attending school was boring beyond imagination. I usually self-studied and just went for tests, but here, they had attendance rules.
Of course they had.
I knew I had to learn because things like chemistry, biology, or math would be the only way to understand and create a way to kill those things, so I chose my grades carefully since I began school.
By the end of the week, I managed to make Charlie believe my app bullshit actually got me more money, apart they forgot to send me, and I convinced him to let me build on the house. He had two rooms and one bathroom, and that was not all right. The construction crew reviewed my plans and found a spot behind the house where they could build a new room, and I smiled, relieved.
The next week came in the blink of an eye and I found myself parking my car, looking to the school- To my school.
I sighed and took my things, getting out and locking my car, giving her one more look. She was a good gift, stable and fast, but a little heavy, and I guessed that was the culprit for her slow acceleration and her fuel consumption, but I wouldn't complain, I had money to burn now.
I looked around the parking lot and checked the cars around, sighing. My car was definitely going to bring attention around here because most of the cars were junk, the best one being a cool silver Volvo.
I found the office after asking a weird girl, getting my sheets and a map, walking out and looking around, putting visuals on the map.
"Hey, you must be the new girl! Nice to meet you, I'm Eric." I heard a voice and turned to see a boy with oily black hair and a lot of acne.
"Hey." I said with a nod and looked around for a few seconds, making his smile fade. Was he waiting to approach me? What the hell was wrong with these people?
"I- I was wondering if you need- You know- That maybe you'd need some help- You know, a tour or something." He said, waving his hands.
Yikes.
"Thanks, man, but I got a map, I'm good." I waved the map and turned, walking away to my first class.
The school wasn't that big, and after a few turns I already had the bigger layout imprinted in my brain, so I stashed the map. In trigonometry, I sat beside a very talkative girl that I vaguely remembered the name, Jessica. After she attempted gossip and small talk and received silence on my part, I heard her whispering to herself, not nice, you bitch, and refrained from a smirk. These kids in here were something else. I knew I was going to claim the outcast status of the school, but I didn't care, as long as I didn't have to play friends with them.
Lunch hour kicked in, and I left before Jessica could make another attempt and went to get something to eat. I arrived at the cafeteria and instantly searched for the exits, something that became almost a reflex to me. After I paid for my food, I searched for a table, spotting an empty one with three chairs. I looked around and saw people eyeing me, turning their faces away as soon as I eyed them.
Dude, what the hell was wrong with these people? How can a transfer student cause so much ruckus?
I sighed and placed down my tray, taking the two additional chairs and placing them at the closest table, coming back to sit. I saw a few people actually sitting when I did that. I could feel the eyes on me as if I was a shiny new thing, but I tried blocking them. I took my notebook out and started writing down a to-do list of my next steps to organize my mind, but after a few minutes, I took a pause and looked around, making faces turn away from me again.
It was there, inside the cafeteria, that I saw them for the first time.
I felt my brain freeze.
I felt my heart stop.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
I saw five people that I had never seen before in my life, sitting, barely moving, not talking, with trays of food untouched in front of them, but their skin and their faces were something I could remember like it was yesterday. Those perfect traces, almost like they were sculpted in stone, and their pale skin. Suddenly, one of the two girls got up, moving like a model around the cafeteria, throwing her tray into the trash can, her soda closed, her apple untouched.
I stared at one of them, trying to see their eyes, but there was no red. What was happening? Was I seeing things? While I stared, the one I was staring at turned to look my way with a curious look, and I turned my face away. My hands were shaking, my heart racing, but I knew I had to play it cool. I was not crazy. I could see them. I could remember their incredible beauty, the pale skin, and the stillness. The stillness that I pointed to Renée in those cloaked figures we walked by in Italy. It was like they were statues.
'Calm the hell down, Isabella. Why are you afraid? You are here to start looking for them, and here they are! YOU FOUND THEM! WHY ARE YOU SHAKING?! YOU WANTED THIS!' I shouted at myself and took deep breaths to calm down.
'I was shocked, just that. The surprise scared me.' I tried convincing myself, organizing my thoughts, clenching my hands into fists.
I looked at them again, but this time, I was observing.
'Are they a couple?' I thought in disgust while eyeing one of the men with his arm around a blonde girl, wondering how those monsters could find partners, but then my own thoughts answered me. They were all monsters, of course they would find partnership in one another.
I knew four things about their species: Their eyes reflected their hunger levels, black meaning they were hungry, and vivid red meaning they were satisfied, they needed human blood as sustenance, they hated the sun, and they had superhuman senses, speed, and strength. I deduced all that after analyzing what happened in Italy, and the words of the one who saved me from that chamber.
I never gave much thought to the reason one of them got me out of there, but I wasn't grateful at all. I would have preferred to die with Renée than survive with all the pain and the knowledge about these monstrosities. He didn't save me, he cursed me.
Oh, I actually knew five things about them. They were cold as a corpse, probably because they are walking cadavers.
I saw all of them getting up and walking away, and noticed that they all moved in the same weird manner. They couldn't hide their disgusting nature and I caught myself sending them death stares. Suddenly, the same blonde male turned his head again and stared directly at me with a confused expression.
I quickly turned my face away again and waited for them to leave.
'How in the world there are five of them here, and no one noticed anything?!' I thought, confused, wondering where were the corpses left behind. They must be really good at cleaning their messes if no one noticed. I made a mental note to ask Charlie about any missing people around here, that was probably their doing.
I walked to Biology in a trance, not really paying attention to my surroundings, and as soon as I entered, I noticed one of them sitting alone behind one of the desks. I quickly flushed from shock again, but this time, I was more controlled. I handed my teacher the sheet for him to sign, and he pointed me to the only place available. I saw from the corner of my eye that he had cleaned one side of the desk for me.
As I walked by one of the heaters, it blew my hair, and I saw his expression. He pressed his hand against his nose, and his face became hungry, almost crazy, his eyes deranged. I stopped in my tracks and felt fear for a moment, noticing his eyes were black as coal.
He was hungry.
Shit.
I seriously thought I should ditch, but maybe that wasn't the best idea. For some reason, this demon was pretending to be human, and of course, he wouldn't murder me inside this class full of people, right? The more I thought about it, the more I understood that he totally could and would if he wanted to. He wouldn't care about human lives if he wanted to eat. I'd have to gamble with my life then, no other choice.
'You could just walk away! Fuck him, and fuck this class.' I shouted at myself, but sighed and answered myself again.
'So he can follow me and kill me when I'm alone? No, thank you.'
'You just said he doesn't give a fuck about witnesses.'
'It's still better than giving him an easier alternative. If I go, he may follow me.'
'You're going to die. You're going to die. You're going to die just like Renée.'
'Calm down- For the love of god, calm down.'
I took a deep breath and moved in to meet my fate. Was he going to kill me right here, right now? I knew I wouldn't be able to fight, and that made me angry, but I sat anyway. I also had to make sure to not give any indications I knew what he was, or he could do something about me using that as an excuse.
I never looked in his direction, but I noticed that he was distancing himself from me. He slid from me as fast as the table allowed, and I frowned.
'What is happening? Why is he doing that?'
'Who cares, just stand still and don't look at him.'
I could also see from the corner of my eye, that he hadn't breathed in minutes, his chest completely still, so I added another thing to my list.
Of course they didn't need to breathe.
Jasper POV.
I kept staring at the board where the human child was explaining her subject, not paying attention, my mind focused on what happened in the cafeteria. Something definitely happened there.
"It helps a little if you think of them as people. Her name is Whitney, she has a baby sister she adores. Her mother invited Esme to that garden party, do you remember?"
"I know who she is." I had enough of Alice's encouragement for now. I knew I screwed up, no reason to keep dragging the subject like that. My limit was not like theirs, and probably would never be, I knew that now. I shouldn't have pushed and walked in here without hunting first. I could feel Edward's wave of relief flowing as he heard that I understood my mistake.
Alice got up without another word and walked away from us, leaving a trail of pain for me to feel. I've hurt her feelings with my harsh answer but I'd make sure to apologize later, although I already did just now, as her feelings changed mid-walk, and she saw me apologizing to her passionately a few hours later. I heard her small chuckle and suppressed a smile.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, I felt a wave of fear.
The last time I felt this in here, was the first day we came in. Of course, Edward made sure that nobody suspected us, and since then, no one gave us scared looks anymore. So what was that? I looked around, trying to identify its source, but it was gone. Someone got scared and then hid their emotions? Why would that happen? For someone to notice us, get scared, and hide their feelings- No, I must be overthinking this.
"I don't hear anything." Edward assured me too low for any human ears, and I relaxed.
"Shall we?" Rosalie asked, and we all moved, and suddenly, another wave hit me, but this time it was not fear.
It was hatred.
I quickly snapped towards its general direction and noticed the new human that joined us today, sitting by herself, hiding her face. Was she the one? I sensed her thoroughly and felt she was feeling embarrassed, so I deduced she was just staring at us and got caught, a normal thing for someone who never met us, but was the hatred coming from her? I looked at Edward, and he just shrugged.
'That's new, you usually tell us exactly what they're thinking.'
I felt a wave of irritation coming and going away, followed by one of shame. I took a step ahead and grabbed his arm, making him stop. The others looked at us but kept walking after a moment.
I simply stared at him, waiting for his response.
"For some reason, I can't read her mind." He whispered in a rush and I felt doubt coming from Rosalie and Emmett.
'You can't? What the hell, that's a first.'
Could it be that she was-
"I checked. She has a heartbeat and all, she's not one of us."
'Then how do you explain you not being able to read her?'
"I have nothing, but apparently, she can't block you, so that's good."
I'd have to ask Alice about this, but I felt another wave of shame coming from Edward.
'You don't have to be embarrassed that you can't read her, it's not like you failed- This isn't your fault.'
He closed his expression and continued walking. I sighed and walked towards my love.
"Jazz, are you sure he can't read her?" Alice was speaking to me through whispers, and of course, the humans around us couldn't hear anything.
"Yes, I'm sure, he said so himself, that's why I'm asking you to check on her to see what's going on."
"Fine, gimme a sec."
I felt her irritation as she tried to concentrate to force her power to switch on. It was fine when it came naturally, but she hated to do it like this. I sent her a wave of calmness, and she smiled at me before closing her eyes.
I waited for her to finish, scanning around the room for emotions directed at us, feeling the lust for my love from one of the human boys, instinctively sending him a wave of absolute fear as I looked directly at him. I almost laughed as he started shaking, but suddenly, I felt overwhelming fear coming from Alice, and my eyes shot at her. What happened?!
She raised her hand, and the teacher tilted her head?
"Yes, Alice dear?"
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Goff, but I'm feeling a little sick, do you mind if Jasper takes me to the infirmary?" She faked a painful expression and the teacher's eyebrows went up as she quickly nodded.
"Oh, Dios Mio, si- Of course dear, you can go. Ayuda a tu novia, Jasper." The woman pointed, and she placed her arm around my neck as I towed her out of the classroom. As soon as we left their eyes, she started walking fast-paced, but still, at human speed, there were a few cameras around.
"What the hell happened?" I asked, confused.
"Edward just massacred his Biology class." She whispered in a hurry, making my brain freeze if it could.
"He did what?!"
"I just saw it happening. The girl, the new girl, Isabella. Her scent made him go berserker, and he attacked her. He killed her and the class for collateral- Actually the class first."
"Did that already happen?"
"I'm not sure, probably, so maybe we should get Em and Rose to help clean this up." She pondered, and I started to make mental notes on what to do.
Destroy evidence, fabricate new evidence, play it out.
First, we'd need a lot of bleach to remove the blood and a place to hide the bodies for now. Maybe the forest that was near us, yea, that would work. I started mentally mapping the camera's angles, so we could create a route to bring the corpses to the forest without being noticed. Breaking the cameras was a mistake only amateurs would make. The best way to make something disappear was to do it in plain hindsight. We had half an hour until the bell, so it would be enough time to make a class disappear. We'd have to make Edward disappear as well to sell it that the whole class vanished. It would start an investigation in no time, but we could play it out. Would I have time to go home and grab our special bleach? If an investigation were to begin, especially because the new girl was the police chief's daughter, they would make sure to look around the room- Damn it, I need to run home and grab it to make sure their dark light won't find any stains. The other students would start asking questions about their missing friends, but not fast enough. This would handle destroying the evidence, now to fabricate new ones, we should prepare a scapegoat-
"Wait!" Alice halted, and I stopped beside her, feeling her eagerness dissipating.
"What?"
"He- He didn't do it. He came this close, but he didn't do it yet." Alice whispered while grabbing my arm to anchor herself as she dove deep into the vision.
"He's by a thread, so let's just wait and see how this unfolds."
I had my doubts about everything happening, but one thing was crystal clear. Isabella Swan was not a normal human.
