(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Practical Exam)
The practical exam had arrived and we were back to normal spending a previous day of our work being cut out.
"First, congratulations are in order. Took you long enough, but you finally decided what to do for the festival." Sara said. "So you're following in Towa's footsteps and putting on a concert, huh? Have you decided what kind of music you want to do?"
"Not yet. We're still working on that. We have a few genres in mind, but nothing definite yet." I answered.
"Well, I have the pleasure of seeing last year's concert live. Rean and Crow, you two are handling all the outfits, right? You guys have that under control?"
Rean and Crow answered at the same time.
Sara sighed. "Honestly, I'm feeling a little envious. If I was five years younger, I'd jump right up on stage with all of you and have a great ol' time."
We all frowned at her.
"H-hey. What are you looking at me like that for?"
"Um...instructor." Alisa said.
"How old are you again?" Fie asked.
"Are you in your mid-twenties?" Rean added.
"Even if you were five years younger, graduation would still be years behind you." Jusis remark.
I covered my mouth because I was this close to burst to laughter.
"Hush, you!" Sara exclaimed. "For us ladies, everything up to the mid twenties is just a warm-up. And men? They're like fine wines, better with age. I'm not sensitive about it really. This is just another valuable life lesson that it's my duty as your instructor to impart."
I chuckled. "Don't worry Instructor, As Class President, I'll make sure Rean, Jusis and Crow receive a proper spanking and scolding for making fun of your age."
"Wait, what?!" Rean exclaimed.
"Pardon?" Jusis added
"Why me too?!" Crow exclaimed
'I'm kidding.' I whisper to Rean and Jusis.
Sara giggled. "Aaaaanyway, as much as I'm looking forward to the festival, that's not why we're here today, are we? Not only do you have no field study next month, too. So since this'll be our last practical exam for a while, I'd figured I'd crank up the challenge a couple notches." She drew out her gun and sword.
"Wait, are you going to be our opponent?" I asked.
"Bingo. Just think of it as the long-awaited second round of May's exam. You wanna get back at me, now's your chance. But you better bring it, cause I'm not gonna go easy on you. All right, Rean. Pick two for your team, because you're up first."
"Got it." Rean replied.
He chose Jusis and Machias for his partners which was perfectly fitting, considering what happened in May. The battle began and we watched as the three guys put all they had against Sara who fought back strong. So far many clashes and crafts, speed and skills are being put to the test. Honestly, i'm too much an awe to speak of the rest. Rean's team started to turn the fight against her and they finally knocked her down.
"Wow...they won, but it was close too." I said. "But they did get some payback, so I guess that's cool."
"Okay, that's one group down, three more to go." Sara got back up. "I'll call you in groups of three, so be ready to jump in when I call your name!"
The next team was me, Laura and Fie and she had us at one point, but we took it back and won. The other two teams also managed to defeat her. Sara was now on the floor, panting in exhaustion and we were panting ourselves too.
"Taking four groups and still coming back for more...you are one of a kind, I'll give you that." I said.
"Phew. I'm spent." Instructor Sara replied. "Mind if i use you as a pillow, Emma?"
"Wh-What?! H-Here?!" Emma exclaimed
"Have you no shame?" Alisa asked
Good grief with her. She truly is a one-of-a-kind teacher. At least she know how to bring in the fun to us.
"Don't get me wrong. I genuinely impressed with how far you've come." Instructor Sara replied. "Now I can tell you where you're headed for your field study without any worries. Up we go!" She then got up. " All right! Get 'em while they're hot."
We each got a group assignment and I checked for my name.
Field Study: September
Group A: Rean, Alisa, Levi, Fie, Machias, Crow
(Study Location: Roer, the Industrial Metropolis)
Group B: Elliot, Laura, Gaius, Emma, Jusis, Millium
(Study Location: Ordis, the Port City)
Roer, huh? That's where the Reinford Headquarters is, so we'll be heading to Alisa's home city...interesting. Of course there's also the problem with Millium going to Ordis. That's where that so call leader of the noble alliance Cayenne lives. Hmph.
"Not to worry. We're thinking about what to do about that. Still, you're not in for a laid-back vacation. That much I can say for certain. That goes for the group headed to Roar, too." Instructor Sara said.
I'm guessing it's about Alisa. As I listen. It's a territory belonging to Rogner. Angelica's family.
"Well, like I said, we're thinking those issues over. With the academy's annual festival coming up next month, there's no field study being planned. So this is your chance to show off all the know-how you've gained from your previous field studies."
"I see, well I also think that this is your chance to say something serious for this one." I replied.
"Really...hmm." Sara cleared her throat. "Make whatever preparations you need to, and when Saturday rolls around, travel with your heads held high. Class VII has done a damn good job so far. The only reputation you guys have to live up to is your own."
We all nodded for that was serious advice and thanked her.
Dateline, September 25th.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Refreshing Morning)
Since this was our last field study for a while, we prepared as much as we could before leaving the dormitory and walked over to the academy field. We were shocked Sharon got ahead of us. Okay, seriously. How does she do that?! But Sara said she will be our guide.
when we saw a massive flying ship appear and then land on the field. Both Major Vander and Prince Olivert were on the ship. This was the Courageous and it looked damn impressive. And now we see Laura's father and Toval again. And Laura's father is the captain of that ship?! Okay, this is just too much.
We were to be given a ride on the ship, so we could be at our destinations faster. Our group would be the first to arrive at our location. The ship landed at Roer's airport and our group got off the ship with Sharon who came along with us and entered the city of Roer.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Roer, the Industrial Metropolis)
"Wow...I can understand what's an industrial city." I commented.
"Well, Roer grew up around steel fabrication and heavy industry." Alisa replied. "That's how it come to known as the Empire's industrial metropolis."
"It's got a population of around 200,000 people, too. That's as big as the capital of a smaller country." Crow added
"I feel like the city's gotten even bigger since the last time I was here." Rean smiled
"That's right. If you like to visit, just head up that escalator. Allow me to welcome you to Roer, home of the Reinford Company." Sharon said. "I sincerely hope that your field study here will be a fulfilling one."
We went up the escalator. So it's a moving staircase. Technology is amazing! There's a large building thing which turn out to be an Orbal Generator. We followed Sharon into the Reinford HQ building, we saw a man rush up to us.
"Lady Alisa?!" He greeted.
"Hello, Dalton. It's good to see you again." Alisa replied.
"Oh the pleasure's all mine. It's been six months since you've been home. I'd heard you were attending a military academy on the outskirts of the capital. But it looks like you've finally decided to come back and visit the old homestead."
"Yeah, I am, we'll be staying here for the next three days."
"I see. That's wonderful news. Keep taking good care of her, Sharon."
Sharon nodded. "I certainly will."
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Strains)
The man walked off and Sharon guided us to the elevators where we went all the way up to the 23rd floor. She then led us down a hallway and opened the doors to a large office. When we walked in, we met the woman we saw before, Alisa's mother.
"So it looks like the Courageous inaugural flyover in Heimdallr and Roer was a success." She said whilst doing a lot of work and on the phone. "But don't release an official statement until tomorrow. Yes, that'll be fine. Yes, I'd like you to begin as soon as possible. And keep a careful eye out for any insider trading." And then the next call. "Hello. Irina Reinfors speaking. Mmm. Yes, I understand. Fst-track the construction on the special train if you can. No, pay it no mind. I doubt Crossbell-related shares rising is indicative of a larger market tread. But sell them all early next month. Timing is key here."
"Wow, she doesn't even know we're standing right here." I sweatdrop.
"Yeah. She's like a commander missing orders across multiple fronts." Machias nodded
"It's impressive to see Towa do it, but Mrs. Reinford seems to have it down to a science." Rean nodded.
"She's like a general on the battlefield of business." Fie added.
Alisa went up to her desk and glared at her and her mother finally noticed us.
"Ah, right." She then stood up and left her desk. "We all have other matters we need to attend to, so I'll get right to the point." She handed out a small envelope to Rean. "I've cleared my schedule to dine with you this evening, so anything you wish to discuss can wait until then. I'll leave the rest to you, Sharon."
"As you wish, Madam Chairman." Sharon replied. "When do you expect to return this evening?"
"I'm planning on seven. Have our guests enjoy a night cruise, if you will."
"That's sounds splendid. I'll make the necessary arrangements."
I could see that Alisa was close to popping a vessel.
"That's it?! That's all you have to say?!" Alisa growled. "I don't care if you ignore me- that's nothing new- but my classmates are here, and you're on our board of directors! Would it kill you to show at least a LITTLE interest!?"
I think I understand Alisa's frustration towards her mother. And yet why do i feel not only sorry for Alisa, but thinking she's lucky? Ugh, I really don't get me.
Then Irina stopped and then look at us. "Oh one more thing. If you want to return in one piece, I'd suggest you steer clear of the provincial army and the Railway Military Police."
"I'm guessing this has something to do with rumors about the Imperial Liberation Front is connected to one of the Four Great Houses." I title my head.
"The same goes for the marquis mansion, though I can't imagine what business would take you there." She continued. "Use common sense and don't try to overstep your bounds. That'll be all." She left the office.
"Have a safe trip, Madam Chairman." Sharon said.
"Wow, your mom's a real piece of work, Alisa." Crow commented.
"The army only wishes it was that efficient." Fie added.
"She... certainly has the mettle to head up an international company like this, to say the least." Machias replied.
"I can see clearly why you had it rough, Alisa." I sweatdrop.
Alisa sighed. "See? You see why I didn't want to come back now? You can't tell me that gave you a great impression of her."
"Well, maybe because she's a busy woman?" I title my head.
"She's always a busy woman. Ooh. Just forget it. Getting all worked up and storming off in a huff is what she wants me to do, and i'm not going to give her the satisfaction. We'll be back before sundown, Sharon. I'd like you to have the guest rooms and dinner preparations sorted by then. Oh and see to our luggage, would you?"
"Heehee, as you wish." Sharon replied. "Have a safe trip, everyone."
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Roer, the Industrial Metropolis)
We left the office and took the elevator, Rean opened up the letter and we got one task for today.
"So we gotta collect a material from a monster in the mine?" I asked. "That's a new one...and I can't wait to start that already."
"Yeah, let's get to the institute Building and talk to this Ratto guy." Crow added. "I wonder if he smells a rat...get it?"
Fie frowned. "That sucked."
"Geez, a little harsh, aren't you?" Crow sighed
I chuckled a little. "A rat… hehe."
"See. My buddy Levi get it."
"That's because he has bad tastes in jokes." Fie remarked
"Ack!" I respond like a wound to my heart.
"Ouch, damn, that was cold." Crow frown. "It's okay Levi. You can hug your buddy Crow."
"She's being so mean!" I respond as I hug Crow and sniff.
"There, there, here's your big handsome bro my handsome little bro." Crow petting my head.
And the group sweatdrop.
"Anyway, it's only 11:30 now, so we've got plenty of time before sundown. We're definitely got the hang of this whole field study thing now by now." Rean said. "Let's show Roer some Class VII spirit!."
"Yeah!" We cheered
We left the Roer HQ building and over to the institute building to look for Ratto. When we walked further inside, a man at the far back waved to us. This had to be him.
"Huh, judging by those uniforms, you're all students, aren't you?" He asked. "They look kinda familiar too."
"Well we are interesting group of Class VII from Thors." I explained
"Are you the Ratto who sent in a request for us?" Rean asked.
"Ah, so you're the students from Thors. Of course, of course. No wonder your uniform looked so familiar. That's the academy George goes to. To be honest, I'm a bit uneasy about leaving this to you, but you look pretty strong, so hopefully it'll work out."
"Haha. It figures George would have connections here." Crow said. "Still, gonna go out on a limb and guess that if you're worrying about how well we'd clean up in a fight."
"Must be a dangerous job."Fie said
"So what is the task, you didn't exactly answer that question." I added.
"Oh, sorry...let me explain what I'd like you to do." Ratto replied. "You've heard of Professor Schmidt, right?"
"The name does sound familiar, yeah." Rean said.
"Professor G. Schmidt, I believe. He was one of the leading disciples of Professor Epstein, the father of the Orbal Revolution." Alisa added. "He's a really famous scholar in his own right. He followed in Epstein's footsteps and his work helped popularize orbments."
"Indeed. He's generally spoken of as something of a living legend." Machias nodded. "Professor Epstein also had two other students, Professor Russell and Professor Hamilton. Their names tend to crop up together quite often in the orbal sciences."
"Yeah. I doubt there's a researcher out there who isn't familiar with those three and their work." Ratto nodded
"Besides that, though. If I'm remembering right, Professor Schmidt also serves as president of the Roer institute of technology." Alisa added.
"Yeah. He's continuing his research here at the institute. He can be pretty difficult to deal with at the best of times, though, so he doesn't really do public appearances these days. Gotta say, you're pretty well informed."
"I take it that discussing this topic has something to do with the material you need?" I asked.
"Why of course, I wanted to share that bit of history, because the request actually comes from the professor himself." Ratto answered. "So I'm taking care of the professor's request on his behalf. Anyway, I feel like i'm talking your ear off, so let's move on to explaining hat it is I'd like you to do."
"By all means." Rean nodded.
"I want you to enter the Sachsen Iron Mine and bring me back a small quantity of a minor metal called linium."
"What's a minor metal?" Machias asked.
"It's a category of rare metals often used in technological development." Alisa explained. "But I've never heard of linium."
"Well that makes me curious, so why us?" I asked.
"Well, extremely small quantities of linium have been extracted from one of the mine's tunnels." Ratto answered. "But a few years ago, dangerous monsters started taking up residence right in that very tunnel. In the end, it had to be sealed off before we could obtain a large enough sample to run tests on."
"That story does sound familiar, now that i think about it." Alisa replied. "And if the ore doesn't have any proven applications, it won't be easy to get permission to access that tunnel."
"So how do we get in and deal with the monster?" I asked
"I do know the mine chief, so if we explain why we want to head into that tunnel, I'm sure he'll let us in."
"Oh really? That'd be a huge help. Still, it's an older tunnel, and i doubt it's been retrofitted to the most modern safety standards. Make sure you go in there carefully." Ratto advised.
"Of course." Rean nodded. "Precaution is the best kind of caution."
"So how shall we get there?" I asked.
"To get to the mine, we'll need to leave town through the eastern exit on the lower level and take the mountain path north." Alisa answered.
"Kay, let's get going." Fie said.
We left the institute and then down to the escalator, turning east into the tunnel and turning left to go through a long tunnel until we found ourselves outside of Roer and into a rocky highway with a few mountains.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Through the Canyon Road)
"Good grief. Nobody said anything about having to climb a mountain today. I'm already feeling bushed." Crow complained. "There's a freight line that goes right to the mine, right? Why can't we just use that?"
Rean frowned. "Oh, come on..."
"We're students, not train-hopping vagabonds." Machias said. "Just think of this as another part of our training."
"Vagabonds, huh?" I title my head.
"It looks like there's some wildlife on this path that might prove dangerous, so let's be careful as we go." Rean advised.
We traveled up the road path and slew several monsters along the way, passing through a chasm path the higher we went.
"This is quite the long walk. I don't think this suits you Machias." I replied.
"Yeah... I wasn't expecting this path to be so steep." Machias panted.
"Man, you city slickers need to toughen up! Left, right, left, right!" Crow replied.
"Left, right, left, right!" I chuckled as I did just that.
"Levi, don't actually do what Crow say." Rean sighed.
"Aww come on, Mr. Leader-man." Crow pouted
"Why does everyone think I'm the leader?"
"Well you do have the charismatic of a leader." I answered.
"I do? But what about you?"
"True. But I'm more of an adviser or the vice leader."
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Iron Command)
When we passed through the second area, we then saw a massive building and a railway line. This had to be where the mining is.
"Welcome to the Sachsen Iron Mine, birthplace of the steel that built the Empire." Alisa said
"That was quite the flare you gave Alisa. I like it!" I cheered
"It's... huge. I had no idea something this large was sitting right on the other side of the mountain path." Rean said in awe. "Even from where we're standing now, the strictures looks like they're ten of large tall."
"The cranes and ducts are so massive, it's like they're meant for giants. I guess this must be where that freight line we passed on the way here goes." Crow added.
"It's a lot bigger than I was expecting." Fie added "Is this mine managed by the Marquis, too?"
This mine itself is actually owned by House Anor, which means it's officially under the control of the Imperial Family." Alisa answered. "They decided how much iron is mined, then the ore is processed by Reinford's ironworks and shipped all over the empire."
"I see. It's a smart move in the sense that it prevents a cadre of nobles form holding a monopoly on the iron-minded here." Machais said.
We also notice that the RMP are here too for some reason. We walked down the pathway and to the ground before going through the small entrance and seeing a miner that noticed us.
"Hmm? Who're you kids? What are you doing here?" He asked.
"It's great to see you again, Rudolf." Alisa replied.
"Well, now! If it isn't little Alisa. It's been ages since I last saw you around here, and it looks like you've brought some friends this time, too."
We had to slightly correct him and explain our reason for coming here. He gave Alisa a keycard, giving us access to the mine. We entered the mine and it was more like an excavation cave, but we slayed a few monsters before reaching the middle of the mine.
"There's nothing here." I hummed. "Please don't tell me this was all a trick."
"I don't know. They said they'd only found small amounts of it, back before this tunnel was sealed." Rean answered.
"Shall we keep looking?" Fie asked.
"We should probably make a more thorough a sweep of the area..." Alisa sighed.
I turned around and jumped back before a giant looking mushroom appeared.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Tie a Link of ARCUS)
"Oh look, we got a fungous among us." I pointed out. "Hey, that rhymes! Fungous among us!"
"Oh yeah, you're right!" Crow smirked
"Not now you two! That must be the monster we were warned about!" Rean added.
"So it decided to come out and free us after all, huh?"
The battle began and a few insects joined in to make this more challenging. We each eliminated an insect and switched our focus on the mushroom, attacking it with all we have until it was eliminated.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Remains Sleeping Underground)
There was something shiny left on the ground and Rean picked it up.
"Is that the linium we're looking for?" I asked. "It must have eaten it or something."
Machias sighed. "That was a bit rougher of a ride that I war prepared for."
"Still that's mission accomplished, I guess." Crow said.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Roer, the Industrial Metropolis)
It was time to leave the mine, Alisa gave the keycard back to the miner and we traveled all the way back to the institute building. Rean then gave the linium to Ratto who seemed very happy.
"Thanks. This is exactly what I was hoping to get my hands on." Ratto said. "This should be plenty to serve as a research sample."
"Heehee. I'm happy to hear that." Alisa smiled. "Of course, it you actually went in and cleared the monsters out of there, i'm sure you could get plenty more."
"That's something we can consider after we've proved this is a viable material. That's all part of the research. And this is Professor Schmift we're talking about. I'm sure he'll deliver some kind of interest result."
"It was an honor to have been able to aid the professor's research." Machias smiled
"It was a pretty rough job though." Fie replied.
"Thanks. I'm grateful for all your help. And I'd like to give you these as a reward."
He handed us a few U-materials which reminds me that I need to give my upgrade my Glaive. Guess I can do that now that we had finished today's task.
After we took the time to upgrade our weapons at a weapons store, we left to notice the sky turning orange.
"And the sky has turn orange. It took longer then expected." I said.
Machias sighed "I'm not surprised. That was a hard day's work, even by our standards."
Alisa smirked. "Well, at least we were able to finished all of the requests, and that's what really matters. Now, let's head back home and wait for my mother."
Rean nodded. "You said it."
"Someone seems awfully cheerful." Fie remarked.
As we were heading to the HQ, I notice a commotion going on. But it wasn't just me who notice. Crow as well.
"Is something wrong, you two?" Rean asked
"There's something going on over there." Crow answered
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Trouble Outbreak)
We begin to walk towards the disturbance and then look down and then see the Railway Military Police and the Provincial Army are having a argument.
"The Military Police and the provincial army…" I trailed off and then recall what Alisa's mother said. "Ah, I remember what Alisa's mother warned us earlier."
"L-Let's go down to the lower floor and get a closer look." Alisa stated.
As we did. There were provincial soldiers blocking the escalator. So we taken the elevator and then see two armies are arguing. And then the argument got worst as the provincial army brought out their tanks. And that commander scum is trying to selling out the populace. And then suddenly Captain Claire appeared. And looks like she's turning the tables and then some blond hair guy shows up. Then everyone else told me that Jusis's older brother Rufus. So that's Jusis's older brother. Jusis wasn't kidding. I heard about him because of Jusis. And then Rufus seem to have calm both armies. And then the armored cars left and do did the RMP.
"Oho. Fortune finds us face-to-face once again." Rufus respond as he walk towards us.
"Thank you again for everything you did for us the other day..." Machias sighed.
"Haha. You needn't be so formal. I was just in town to speak with the marquis on my father's behalf."
"I imagine you two must've had a lot to talk about." Rean trailed off.
"Heh, Indeed, we did, and the marquis never makes it an easy time. I took advantage of all the excitement the Courageous maiden voyage to take my little trip unnoticed."
"That's quite the sneaky move, don't you think?" I asked
"Hehe. I won't deny that. Given the current climate, it's impossible to predict what may happen, both here and in Ordis. You have three days of your field study remaining. I suggest you focus on your assigned tasks and stay out of trouble. I'm looking forward to seeing what Class Vll has to show at the academy's festival, after all."
And then Rufus left. Huh. I must admit. Rufus is an interesting man.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Roer, the Industrial Metropolis)
But we can go to HQ at last. So as we head inside the RF building, we took the elevator to the 24th floor which was where Alisa's family home was.
"Welcome home everyone." Sharon greeted.
"Feels nice to be back." Alisa replied. "I'll just ignore how you popped up to greet us the moment we walked through the door."
"Oh, I just couldn't wait to see you. Now, if you'll just follow me, I'll show you inside."
She opened the door and guided us in to the Reinford family home.
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Thors Military Academy Festival)
"Woooo, such a luxury place." I commented.
"Well, I'm impressed." Rean nodded.
Machias pondered. "This is even more grandiose than I'd expected."
"You can see the whole city out there below." Crow said. "Talk about the lap of luxury."
"Looks like a comfy place to take a nap." Fie added.
"You guys really think so?" Alisa asked.
"I honestly don't know what to say. Never been through a luxury home before but I do say this is a fine home." I responded.
"I've already finished preparing dinner." Sharon said. "Please let me know whenever you're ready to eat."
"Well, I think we should dine right now. We've sure earned it."
When dinner was ready, we ate a little quietly and it would've been a little more lively had it not been for the fact that Alisa's mother had to cancel meeting with us for dinner. Aww… I was hoping to ask her about the ARCUS. I wanted to know how they sync with us. Plus there is a lot going on as well. the thing with Rufus, the Provincial Army, and RMP. Something is going on behind the scenes.
After dinner was over. I begin to head to the room I'll be staying in. I begin to write the report. It was now the early evening. With that time much has passed. I think it's time for me to upgrade my Glaive with the U-materials. I should change my clothes though. But before that. I should get some water. As I exit my room I was in the main room returning from the kitchen when I saw Rean come out from one of the spare rooms.
"Hey there, Rean." I went over to him.
"Oh, hey Levi, I didn't see you there." He replied.
"Really? Guess you must be thinking if you were that distracted?" I title my head. "What's on your mind?"
"Well..." Rean trailed off at first but then he look at me. "Okay, but mind if this kept between us?"
"Sure, what's up."
And then Rean begin to tell me he got a secret call.
"A secret call, hmm?" I couldn't help but smirk. I place my hand on the wall where he was nearby to prevent him to move as I got close to him face to face while a little seductive and he look surprised
"A-Ah, Levi?" Rean is blushing as I notice his cheeks are pink.
"So… who's the lucky gal?"
"I-It's nothing like that! And… aren't you close? And… why are you smirking? And why are you talking like THAT?!"
"And why are you blushing?"
"Ahh… well you're too close- and… um…" Rean blushing as he is tongue-tied.
I couldn't help but chuckled. I might have tease him too much as got back up.
"Sorry, sorry for teasing you. Your reaction was perfect."
"Geez Levi. And since when are you seductive?"
"Actually, it's my first time trying. I thought I should try being a little flirt, and since Crow was the one who suggested it since I have a pretty face."
"Okay, I think we should talk about not listening to what Crow has to say."
"Figured you say that. So come on, you can tell me, everyone else is in different rooms and Sharon's near where the elevator is."
"Alright...I got a call from Captain Claire. She says she wants to meet me alone at the 'F' Bar for a private discussion in person. It's to do with the Reinford Company."
"Ahhh, I see..." I hummed. "Do you want me to come with you? I was actually planning on upgrading my weapon so I'm heading to the blacksmith shop I can find. We can even make it a date." I wink.
"Levi please stop teasing me."
"Sorry, sorry. I'll stop." I chuckled.
"Even if you say so, but I don't want to leave the door unlocked." Rean stated
"Don't worry. I'm sure Sharon will lock up, besides, as much as I like to visit the Orbal Shop. I wanted to head to the blacksmith shop for my weapon. We can use that in a way you can upgrade your Tachi, too." I chucked
"Well… when you put it that way. Okay, let's go." Rean nodded
"Good, shall we darling~" I wink.
"W-Wait what?!" Rean blushed.
"Hahaha! Look at your face!"
"Geez!" Rean pouted. "But still, thank you, Levi. You're a terrific friend."
"You too. I have some casual clothes which I can use to disguise myself, so I'll just go and change and then we're off." I smiled.
I went to a guest room I was staying for the duration of the field study and changed into my casual clothes. I was dressed in black jeans, black shoes, and a grey and white checkered shirt to match the look. I left the room and see Rean hasn't change out of his uniform.
"Sorry to keep you waiting." I waved
"Whoa, nice clothes. I hardly recognize you." Rean light blushed.
"Hehe, thanks." I chuckled "And you look like a stunt, too. So ready?"
"Ready."
Then we made our way to the elevator.
"Are you sure, Levi?" Rean asked. "Shouldn't we ask Sharon since she might be in the kitchen."
"Of course." I answered. Then I notice Sharon standing behind. "Hey Sharon."
And to Rean surprise, as we turn around. We see Sharon there. Okay, I'm glad I have high senses for presence detection but her stealth must be extremely high!
"Good evening, Master Levi, Master Rean." Sharon said before noticing our changed look. "Are you heading out for the evening?"
"Yeah, Rean and I are planning to head to the Blacksmith shop to upgrade our weapons. As well as do a little sightseeing and shopping at the Orbal store before it close." I answered
She giggled. "Sounds delightful. I'll lock up for you. "
"Thank you Sharon." Rean smiled
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Evening Moment)
We stepped into the elevator and went down to the ground floor and stepped out. When I was halfway towards the exit, me and Rean heard the elevator arrive and we turned around to see the doors had open, but no one came out.
"What was that?" Rean asked
"It seems someone is hiding." I answered.
We both check it out and turns out to be Fie.
"Whoops." Fie said and she ran away.
"I thought so… Hey! Why are you running away?!" Rean exclaimed
Then we follow and We met up with Fie.
"I'm surprised you two notice me. I was trying pretty hard to be stealthy." Fie grin
Rean sighed. "How long have you hiding there? Wait. Have you been trailing us ever since we left the penthouse?"
"Well I saw you both slip out." Fie answered
"How did you pass Sharon?" I asked.
"She saw me leaving, but she just let me go." Fie answered
"Ah, gotcha. Let me guess, you got curious what we been up to? So you decided to follow us on our date?" I wink.
"Levi, knock it off." Rean sighed. "Here's what's up."
Rean then told Fie about meeting with Clare and Rean then ask if she wanted to join us and she accept. But first we went to the Blacksmith shop and then upgrade our weapons to make our story plausible. Then we head to the bar to meet Clare.
The 'F' Bar is on the other side of this building. We walked the path on the left and then saw a building with a bar sign.
"Hmm, this must be the place." I said
"Yeah. This looks like the place." Rean nodded
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Dining Bar "F")
We opened the door and walked down a few stairs before turning left and entering a very small yet trendy bar. Rean looked at the bar stall to see a familiar lady in a stunning dress.
"I-I guess it makes sense that she wouldn't come here in uniform." Rean whisper
"The charms of an older woman, eh?" Fie gleam to Rean
I couldn't help but hold in my laughter. "Wasn't expecting that, huh, ladies man?" I whisper as well
"Levi, please. I think I'll managed." Rean sighed.
"We'll see." Me and Fie replied
We begin to appaoched Captain Claire.
"Sorry I kept you waiting." Rean apologize.
"Hehe. Don't worry about it. Oh…" The Claire notice me and Fie
"Hi." Fie said
"Hello." I wink.
"Yeah… Levi offer to come with me and use the suggestion that we head out to the Blacksmith shop and Orbal store as an excuse. And we kind of ran into Fie on the way here and told her she could come along. That's not a problem, is it?" Rean explain
"Not at all. I assume you two been surveying the town while acting as Rean's bodyguard?" The three of us look surprised.
"Not bad." I said
"Sounds like you've done your homework." Fie said.
"The intelligence Division has told me a little. Anyway, I think we might attract a little too much attention if we stay at the counter. What do you say we get a table for four?"
Sure." I nodded.
Claire moved and we sat at a table in the corner of the bar.
"I'm glad to see you're doing well." She said. "I think this may be the first time we've been able to have a proper conversation."
"Yeah, it's also good to finally see you without worry, Claire." I replied. "Also, may I say that you look stunning tonight?"
"Well, aren't you a charmer? I almost didn't recognize you with those clothes on as well." She winked. "Are you trying to sweep me off my feet?"
"Hehe, who knows." I wink.
"Anyway, I was hoping I'd get the chance to sit down and talk with you too, actually." Rean said
"Oh?" Clare asked
"You sure you want the both of us here?" Fie asked
"That's not what I mean… I have a lot of questions – like about why Millium transferred into our class, for example. But there's one really fundamental question that would go a long way toward answering a lot of the others. What exactly is it that you and Chancellor Osborne are trying to accomplished?" Rean asked
Claire look surprised.
'Yes, I also wondered about that.' I thought
(Trails of Cold Steel ost - Practical Exam)
"Let's look at that standoff with the provincial army earlier this evening. It's hard for me to feel much sympathy for them after they drove armored cars right into the middle of the city… but maintaining order in the provinces is generally accepted to be the duty of the provincial armies. Maybe it's just me, but it seems an awful lot like you were just trying to provoke them by belittling their authority." Rean said
Yeah. Rean has a point. I don't trust the nobles like Albarea and Cayenne. But also don't trust Osborne.
"Viewed without the proper content, I can see how it might look like that. But right now, the factional conflict in the Empire is nearly at its breaking point. Crossbell is buzzing with talk of independence and Calvard is still weathering its immigration disputes. In such volatile times, there's a very real need to create a far more expansive network to help maintain public order." She looked at us. "The only organizations that are up to the challenge are the Railway Military Police and the Intelligence Division."
"Well, I can understand the need for order should chaos break out. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate something being done about what could potentially threaten lives, but I heard the pressure he done. Don't you think the chancellor is being aggressive to get what he wants?" I cross my arm.
"I can't deny that. But at the very least, the chancellor is acting with a sense of integrity. He hasn't stooped so low as to give aid to terrorists, unlike some others I could name. I want you to at least understand that."
"Wait, so…" Rean trailed off.
"I thought so...the Noble Faction is the one aiding the Imperial Liberation Front, right?" I said as I close my eyes
"I'm afraid there's no longer any doubting it. We've all but confirmed the involvement of Duke Cayenne, the most prominent representative of the Four Great Houses. The three airships the Imperial Liberation Front has been using have been traced back to Ordis as well." Claire nodded
"So that's where they got the ships from. Now it makes sense. After all. Even the Noble Faction despises Osborne. I wouldn't be surprised if they team up in secret or they were from the Noble Faction, to begin with."
"I've heard the duke is just a gaudy old man, but... Jusis's brother came to pick him up in Legram, didn't he?" Fie asked.
"That's what Toval told us. And now, Rufus just so happens to pop up on another of his secret trips."
"It's more suspicious if you ask me. He's carefully avoiding the questions Jusis ask him what's going on as well. Almost like something is going on from behind the scenes too. In that case, If I have a hunch of Rean's question. Then the second question is... What do you know about the Reinford Company and Alisa's family?" I asked
I notice Rean smile at me as I got his question right on the mark.
"I guess it's time to get to the matter I called Rean here for in the first place. The Railway Military Police is currently weighing the possibility of a forced inspection of Reinford's 1st Factory." Claire answered
"Sound serious." Fie said.
"So that's why Alisa's mother had to cancel meeting with us tonight. Sounds like a serious situation alright." I stated
"The 1st Factory belongs to one of Reinford's major divisions, right?" Rean asked.
Claire nodded. "It's one of the main divisions and handles the bulk of the company's iron and steel processing, among other things. They're also currently under of suspicion of something I'm not at liberty to discuss with you right now."
"I guess that's probably because of the fact that Reinford has many branches across the city. And in time, those divisions as you mention, have become too large to keep in order?" I asked
"Yes. For years now, Reinford has been the Empire's heavyweight when it comes to heavy industry and manufacturing. The company is split into different divisions that handle things like steel productions, railways, weaponry, and tools. As you mention, it's too large. Large enough to have their own internal allegiances- some to the Nobles, and with others supporting the Reformist Faction." Claire nodded
"Damn! To think that even companies like Reinford are taking sides...I can see why you asked Rean alone from the start. If Alisa were to hear about this, she would freak out at her mother." I muttered
"Exactly. I'm sure Irina Reinford is aware of this to at least some extent, as the company's chairman, but the self-supporting accounting system she introduced has the side effect of granting each division a long leash. Because of that, I doubt even she has a full grasp of the situation." Claire answered.
"So the first factory you guys have your sights set on for that inspection... is aligned with the Noble Faction I assume?" Rean asked
"You assume correctly. And the provincial army is doing everything it can to stop us from carrying out that investigation. That was what led to a quarrel." Claire answered "I imagine chairman Irina is currently doing her utmost to rein in all the divisions and get them back in line."
"What about her personal life, cause from what I've seen, she doesn't seem to give a damn about her daughter's feelings, not one bit." I asked
"Well, I do know one thing. When she seized control of the company five years ago, she requested to rely support from both sides. Being indebted to them like that, I have my doubts that she'll be able to target the underlying problem." Claire respond
"And that in turn has only piled up the problems that she's had to deal with. No wonder she's hardly had any time to stop and think about things that aren't business-related." I sighed.
"It's sounding shadier by the minute." Fie added
"You can say that again. The situation seems even more dire than I thought." Rean nodded
"And on top of that, there's the growing tension between the neighbors." I added
"Well, I've told you as much as I can right now." Claire got up. "Tensions are mounting all over the country, but Roer has an extra fuse of its own. Try to gain an understanding of the crises unfolding here, then do your best to stay out of it. Whatever other lessons Class VII takes away from this field study, I hope that ends up on the list."
"That's going to be difficult when we end up getting dragged into it the events that force us to get involved." I pointed out.
"Hmhm, true. Still, I wish you the best for the remainder of your field study." Claire said
"Yeah, and thanks for the water. We'll be taking our leave after you." I wink
She smiled. "Alright, goodnight."
As soon as she left. Rean realizes something.
"Wait… the bill!" Rean exclaimed
"I don't think you have to worry about that." I said
"Yep. Looks like she just picked up our tab. She gave some good intel too. For free, even." Fie nodded
Rean sighed. "And I can't just go running after her now… looks like we owe her one."
"So gentlemanly Rean." I chuckled.
"So you like the mature type, huh? She's sort of like Sara… except responsible and composed." Fie added
"You can say that again." Rean trailed off.
Then Rean ARCUS ringing. He pick it up.
"Hello, Rean Schwarzer speak—" "Rean! What are you doing!?" Alisa exclaimed
"Oh, it's just you Alisa." Rean said.
I covered my mouth as I begins to laugh.
"Wh-What do you mean 'It's JUST you'?! Is it true some girl invited you out for a night on the town!?" Alisa exclaimed
"Whoa, hold on. A late-night date? I thought you only had eyes for me, Rean." Crow smirked
I then got a idea. I then place my hand on Rean's shoulder and got close to his Arcus. "Hey Rean, What's that you got there?" I pitch my voice to sound like a girl.
"What are you-" Rean look surprised.
"WHO IS THAT?!" Alisa shout.
I begin to laugh and I high-five Fie because this is getting funny.
"Hahahahaha! Crow, you fox you. Are you trying to steal Rean from me?" I smirked.
"Levi knock it off. And what's with that female voice you did earlier?" Rean looking mad at me.
"Sorry, sorry, I couldn't help it and Alisa took the reaction I was looking for." I chuckled.
"Wait what?!" Alisa exclaimed
"Haha! You made a good woman there Levi." Crow chuckled.
"Oh boy…" Rean sighed.
