Some people commented on my mistakes in the last chapter.

Allow me to clarify that I use autocorrect to write this story, and it may happen that it changes the meaning of the text to maintain a certain comtext. It sucks...

Luckily, I'll be more attentive. It's not going to be perfect, but I think it'll break the bank, right? Ok...

Abnormally busy days, as expected

The feeling of cold water in the morning is something I always enjoy. So, one of my habits is washing my face and watching through the bathroom mirror as the water carries the tiredness and wear and tear into the sink. A simple treatment that helps me wake up in the mornings.

In today's case, I was noticeably better. Much better than a few days ago. It turns out that since the day the service club dealt with the Kawasaki Saki problem, things have been a little bad for me. A really strong fever. Which knocked me into bed for a long two days.

In short, some medicines were passed to me. My mother warned that if there was no improvement during this week, I should go to the doctor for a quick checkup. Fortunately, it seems it worked. Nausea and constant fever ceased. And now I was almost one hundred percent.

I say "almost" because there were still some things left. First, it was my sudden hunger. Even though I threw up some of the food, I still couldn't stop wanting to bite and swallow everything in sight. And the second thing was the nightmares. Compared to the first, these were far less realistic, but still shocking enough to make me scream and wake up in a river of sweat during the night.

The paranoia was so much that I even had some strange hallucinations. Like the voices calling my name and the sudden burning sensation I felt in some parts of my body. As if something was sneaking under my flesh.

"Onii-Chan, Komachi also needs the bathroom to get ready for school. Hurry up and leave."

Hearing my little sister across the room, I quickly dried my face with a towel and prepared to leave. Now that I was visibly better I could go back to Sobu High.

In fact, I'd rather stay home and relax for one more day. However, as I don't have any friends, I couldn't get to copy past lessons during the week. Maybe if I asked Totsuka… Nah! I can't trust it. Expectations lead only to disappointment. The sooner I can catch up on my own, the longer I can relax. Summer vacation was coming up too, so I could put it off for later.

"Onii-Chan?"

"I'm leaving, I'm leaving now..."

I finally opened the door, revealing my Imouto with folded arms as she impatiently tapped the sole of her foot on the floor. Not only that, but there was something about her that made me a little uncomfortable...

"Why are you only wearing a towel?"

"I'm tired of waiting for you. Now if you'll excuse me, Siscon."

"Hi! It's nothing I haven't seen, you know…"

I whispered that last part with a weary sigh, letting my little sister lock herself inside the bathroom.

Siscon, really? It's not my fault Komachi wears a short, very revealing towel. It looked like it was going to fall at any moment too. Even though her collarbone was attractive, I wouldn't be horny about my little sister, ever. It's just a fact, okay?

Putting those siscon thoughts aside, I started walking through the halls of the house. My goal was the kitchen, obviously. I will need a lot of energy today. So, repeating the coffee three or four times was ideal. Maybe five...

However, in the middle of my journey in search of food, I end up running into a furry obstacle.

"..."

"..."

He was small, had a grumpy face and believed he was at the top of the Hikigaya family's social hierarchy. We stared at each other silently, as if they were old enemies. Each paying attention to the other's movements. Our impasse was such that we could stay like this until the end of time.

However, Hikigaya Hachiman was a descendant of the great Homo Sapiens. The species that reached the top of the chain through its intelligence and curiosity. So, as cute as Kamakura was, he couldn't exceed his authority over mine. I am absolute, so kneel![1]

Regaining my confidence, I had finally taken a step forward towards my goal. Not worrying about that hairball in the middle of the road.

"NYAUUUUUU!"

In the next moment, Kamakura growled angrily at my boldness, completely ruffling his fur and assuming a defensive posture. His wheezing could be translated as "Do not approach, vile creature!" as his sharp claws prepared to tear the enemy apart.

But what the hell is going on with this animal anyway?

I know that Kamakura was never my type. I even say that the feeling is mutual, but I never imagined that one day he would become so hostile to me. We've known each other for years and we've both always sought Komachi's affections. We were the same in that respect. But these last few days, our meetings have been very…

"SHIAAAAAAAAHHHH!"

Tense, right?

"Onii-Chan, leave Ka-Kun alone."

"It's more like he wants to pick a fight with me."

Hearing Kamakura's grunts, my little sister warned while still inside the bathroom. I just sighed and decided to move closer to the corner of the wall. Giving my cat the idea that I didn't want to fight.

"NYAUUUUUU!"

Got it, got it! Now let me pass, furry abomination!

I wasn't scared. At least, not so much… Seriously, this fight would be very disadvantageous for my cat due to the differences in stature. However, those sharp claws were sure to hurt. And I hate getting hurt, so it was a fair trade.

Of course, the moment we stood side by side, I could see his posture intensify. This animal was quite ready to pounce on me.

"SHIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!"

"RGHRRRGHKK!"

"!"

As I also growled in response, Kamakura flinched, as if he had seen some kind of monster and fled beyond my vision. I sighed in relief. Now, with the path clear, could finally go to the kitchen without further interruption.

Seriously, this was the first time my growl imitation had worked. Not that I was some kind of animal to do this all the time, but it turns out it wasn't very effective with Yukinoshita on our first date. So I was a little proud of my performance on this one.

….

But now that I think about it, this imitation of mine sounded realistically too well done. In a pretty exaggerated way...

Arriving at Sobu was as smooth as ever. I parked the bike, put my shoes in the closet, and headed towards the snack machines so I could keep my hunger at bay. After stuffing some granola bars and chocolate into my bag, I opened a can of MaxCoffee and headed toward my class.

"..."

Along the way, I ended up bumping into a certain person. She had pink hair tied in a bun and wore a very short skirt. Of course, it was Yuigahama Yui, my clubmate and classmate.

Perceiving each other's existences, we stood and stared at each other for a while. Yuigahama looked visibly tense next to me, shaking as if she didn't know what she could say.

"Hi."

"Ah! H-hello…"

At my call, Yuigahama had taken a small leap. Surprise because I was trying to talk to her.

"Yeah… Hikki…"

"Goodbye."

"Oh… Bye…"

In this last exchange, Yuigahama finally walked away. I stood for a while watching her back disappear from view. Satisfied, I gave myself a small nod.

Yes, that's how it has to be.

Before getting completely sick, on the same day that I had made the request for Kawasaki, there was a visit to the workplace where I made a group with Hayama Hayato and Totsuka Saika. That same day, I severed my relationship with Yuigahama Yui once and for all.

Earlier last year I had saved her puppy, as a result she felt obliged to speak to me because of this feeling of retribution. Yuigahama Yui is a nice girl and I hate nice girls. So I feel bad to see her trying to associate with someone like me.

I've always been a loner. Someone who is used to losing. So I won't allow such a relationship to continue, because it's just false modesty. So resetting our relationship for good is the most efficient way to make Yuigahama not feel guilty. And now we are complete strangers in each other's eyes.

And so, I go back to my usual path...

These last few hours I've had my mouth full all the time. Always chewing something or constantly getting drinks from vending machines. And that not only earned me a lot of strange looks, but even some lectures from the teachers for being caught eating during class.

At this rate, I'll soon burn my wallet. The money I was saving to buy books and the like turned into chocolate bars, milkshakes and yakisoba breads. Hell! Even my MaxCoffee consumption multiplied by about seven times. If this continues, I will go bankrupt...

Regardless, my day-to-day obligations remain the same.

"Oh… It's you, Hiki-vomit-Kun."

Arriving at the Service Club room, I am already greeted that way.

"You really aren't going to forget this, are you?"

"I'd love to forget, but that show of Horrors will forever be in my memory. I really should sue you for psychological damage. Just remembering your expression and all that-"

"I get it, I get it! It's my fault! Now stop reminding yourself of that at once..."

Having my first date of the day with Yukinoshita, I sighed with a touch of embarrassment as I put my backpack on the floor and sat down in my seat. It looks like that event at McDonalds was alive in the ice queen's memory, which sucks. Seriously, don't throw up in front of your acquaintances, you'll want to kill yourself later...

"Well, if you're still alive, then Hiratsuka sensei's report about you being just sick was true."

"Woman, don't say 'just' like you want me dead right now."

With my grunt Yukinoshita just shrugged his refined posture and elegantly seated while reading what looked like a fashion magazine. A somewhat unexpected read considering her personality. Another detail is that she seemed to be waiting for someone, which obviously wasn't me.

"Has Yuigahama appeared in my absence?"

I asked taking a sip of my fifth MaxCoffee of the day, making Yukinoshita squeeze the magazine in his hand tighter.

"...The day before yesterday Yuigahama-San took her dog to the vet and yesterday she did some chores around the house... She seems to be very busy lately."

Yukinoshita whispered, picking up her phone and looking at the messages that possibly she and Yuigahama were e-mailing.

"Looks like Yuigahama-san isn't coming today either. She just sent a message."

"I see…"

"I wonder if she doesn't intend to come anymore..."

"Have you considered asking her?"

"If I did, she would probably come. Even if she didn't want to…"

"Yeah, that seems to be the case..."

Yeah, the conversation was dead that way. There wasn't much to say to be honest. Yukinoshita was quite close to Yuigahama, so she probably missed her. But, it's not like I can do anything, right? So don't stare at me like that, Yukinoshita. It is scary.

"Did something happen between you and Yuigahama-san?"

"No, nothing."

"If that were the case, she would be here. Did you have an argument?"

"No. At least I don't think so."

Even I wasn't sure. Was it an argument? I don't remember yelling at Yuigahama or anything. So I didn't feel guilty. Certainly not.

"Yuigahama-san has a lot of flaws. She's noisy, invades your personal space and talks without thinking."

It looks like you're the one who's in a fight with her, Yukinoshita. Funny. I would have pointed this out if I wasn't too busy with my MaxCoffee.

Oh… A sweet taste for a bitter life is the best.

"She's a lot of things… But Yuigahama-san isn't a bad person. That's for sure. So Hikigaya-kun, stop drinking that diabetic stuff for a second and tell me what happened."

In that exchange, Yukinoshita gave me a cold look. She certainly seemed determined to resolve this supposed issue between me and Yuigahama. It was actually a problem that only Yuigahama had, so I didn't need to do much about it.

Anyway, at the very least, it was okay to give an answer. So I just sighed before opening my mouth.

"It wasn't a fight. This is something that only close friends do. I would say it was…

"A disagreement?"

"A communication problem, I think."

Said vaguely. I wasn't even sure what I was talking about.

What would be the extent of the alleged argument between me and Yuigahama? It was certainly difficult to describe. Although, considering Yukinoshita's gaze, that must have been enough.

"I see. So there's not much you can do about it. Sorry to bother you…"

And just like that, our conversation died for the next forty minutes.

Yukinoshita must have been alone these last few days wondering about Yuigahama's absence. Look. Yuigahama was now avoiding me and that was obvious to anyone watching our exchange earlier. With my presence being a constant in the Service club, it was only natural that she would avoid him too. Of course, that wasn't a certainty, but it was easy to imagine Yuigahama stiffening around me.

And now, without the presence of this energetic girl, the room was silent. Just the sound of pages being turned, the ticking of the clock, and the small rumble of my stomach.

Shit! I need to eat something.

"I'm going to grab a snack from the vending machines, want something?"

I got up and turned to Yukinoshita, making that suggestion. She then gave me an indifferent look and then went back to her magazine.

"No thanks. I'm satisfied."

"I see, in which case I'll be right back."

"Right."

Leaving the queen behind, I walked towards the exit. Just as I was about to reach the door...

"Yukinoshita, I'm coming in."

The door to the Club room swung open, revealing a full-breasted woman in her mid-thirties wearing a white lab coat. It was Hiratsuka Shizuka Sensei.

"Hiratsuka-Sensei, how many times have I said to-"

"Knocking on the door? I know, but that's not my style. So you can say that attitude is my trademark."

With his shit-eating grin, Sensei put his hands in his pockets as he glared at a visibly annoyed Yukinoshita.

"What do you want here, sensei?"

I asked, cutting off the impending conflict between the Ice Queen and the Queen of Singles.

"Oh right Hikigaya. Now you're better and back. I came to talk about the new conditions of [dispute] between you and Yukinoshita. Also…"

With his hands on his chin, Sensei started walking around me. Looking me up and down like a zoo animal. Upon his inspection she turned to face me and began to stare at me.

"What is it?"

I asked irritated. What the hell is this woman doing?

"You grow up…"

"Hmm?"

Sensei whispered, stepping forward and getting close enough for me to feel her full breasts pressing into my chest. Skimming up and down in an attempt to reach me. I could feel her hot breath hitting my chin and even Yukinoshita started to stare at us puzzledly.

"Sensei, what are you…"

"Stay still. I'm measuring..."

"Measuring?!"

I was confused. Was this woman really hitting on me or what? Not that I didn't like the soft feel and all. Hiratsuka Sensei was a beautiful woman and smelled really good. But if it continues at this rate things can get a little bad for me.

Anyway, we stayed in that position for a few more seconds with Hiratsuka Sensei just standing on tiptoe, trying hard to keep up with me for some reason. Lastly...

"Really…"

Hiratsuka Sensei took a step back with a small satisfied smile.

"You're a little taller Hikigaya. I can't tell the difference, but I feel like you're a little taller. As expected of a Young boy."

With a look of "this must be it" Hiratsuka Sensei nodded several times as he stared at me.

"Now that you say it, my clothes are a little short. So that's why I was really hungry these days, hun?"

I asked no one else, nodding in consent at that fact. Looks like it really was a growth spurt after all.

"Hungry, isn't it? Now that you mention it, a lot of teachers have been complaining that they caught you eating in class today. It's good to know you're growing up, but be careful next time."

"I was just really hungry…"

I whispered in shame as Sensei gave his verdict. She then adjusted her lab coat in order to change the subject.

"As for why I'm here today, I've decided to turn your duel into a Battle Royale. In other words, I want you to find new members. Or at least try to fill Yuigahama's missing vacancy so we can spice things up."

With those words, I could feel a small icy breeze coming from my side. Obviously, Yukinoshita didn't like the last part.

"Hiratsuka-Sensei, it's not like Yuigahama-san left-"

"Even if it doesn't, an absent person is still an absent person. Which doesn't make sense for our purpose here, Yukinoshita."

With a downcast gaze, Sensei gave him the point, causing Yukinoshita to bite his lower lip. While it was straightforward, that was the correct line of reasoning. If Yuigahama doesn't come to the Club anymore, then her existence becomes irrelevant. And so we would go. Though I'm jealous that Yuigahama can go off like this while I'm forced to participate in this shit. What an unfair world.

"It doesn't matter who it is. If Yuigahama doesn't come, replace her. I'll look for some candidates too for..."

"There's no need, Hiratsuka Sensei. Me and Hikigaya-Kun here will bring Yuigahama-san back. You can be sure of that."

"Hm! Are we going?"

"Yes, we are going."

I was somewhat surprised about the Ice Queen's sudden decision. Of course, Sensei didn't fail to cast a curious glance either. Yukinoshita finally brought a face of commitment towards me.

"June 18th, do you know what that day means?"

"It's definitely not a holiday."

"It's Yuigahama-san's birthday, I think... In her email there was something like this."

"Not brave enough to ask her, huh…"

I said that with a wry smile, which Yukinoshita looked at with an annoyed look on his face. She finally sighed and turned to face our teacher.

"I wish I could celebrate together with her for a while. So..."

"So you're going to take the opportunity to call her back, right? Hm… Yeah, that's a good plan. In that case I'll say goodbye and hope for your success."

Spinning around with his fluttering lab coat, Hiratsuka Sensei slowly walked out with a satisfied smile. I watched his broad back until only Yukinoshita and I were alone in the room. Finally, I sighed wearily.

She planned this, right?

Seriously, despite her age, she really needs to act less manipulative. I'm scared.

"H-Hiki… Hikigaya-Kun…"

Leaving my smart teacher attention aside, I leaned towards Yukinoshita right behind. Her hands were close to her chest and I noticed that she had a slight blush on her cheeks. A nervous look was visible in his blue eyes that stared at the corners of the room. Do you have a fever by any chance?

Eventually even I started to get a little restless and when Yukinoshita found the strength to speak.

"Y-You… Uh… Would you go out with me?"

What?

Yukinoshita Yukino doesn't lie. And that's an absolute truth over the two months I interacted with her. So when she mentioned the word "go out with me" it didn't take my mind to decipher the true meaning of that request.

Which was just to do the shopping for a gift on a Sunday morning.

Serious. It's really stupid to get excited when you're dating a girl. A lot of guys would be salivating at the possibility of the Ice Queen wanting to date them. And I don't blame them, even I was excited about it at first.

But again, here is Hikigaya Hachiman, an old soldier of war. I don't fall for the same trick twice. That means even if Yukinoshita asks me to pretend to be her boyfriend. I still won't create a stupid misunderstanding. After all, it's just "pretending" so that I could accompany her to the stores without being labeled a criminal by the clerks. Yes, I'm a punk shit.

"This seems to be harder than I thought…"

A voice sounded down.

After failing to find a gift, Yukinoshita finally sat down on a bench. She was exhausted.

"Why do you have to analyze clothes for so long? This is a pain."

"I can't help it. I can only judge clothes based on the material and how long they stretch…"

Yukinoshita spoke crestfallen. Lightly squeezing the handles of her wicker bag.

I glimpsed with a little admiration the Ice Queen. Her look gave a different impression than what I saw at school.

Her hair was split into two tails, like a little girl. Underneath she wore a white dress, tied with a lilac belt, which reached down to her knees. Pairing her blue tank top with her sandals, I could tell she looked more…cute? Yea! Exactly. Although I would never admit it.

About me? Well… It's a little curious. Normally, I would have worn gray jeans with an orange shirt over a green one. A basic look, but visually new as I didn't have many going out clothes.

The problem, my dear, was this sudden growth spurt I've had recently. Most of my clothes either turned into nightgowns for Komachi or went straight to the trash. My dad was a little scared that he was shorter than me and my mom finally realized that she would need to revamp my wardrobe. Komachi, when he realized I didn't have decent clothes, dragged me early to the mall before we met up with Yukinoshita a couple of hours later.

I didn't care what I was going to wear on this damn date, but my little sister wanted to find a decent look for me. As a result today I had a fresh look. Long-sleeved shirt and sports sweatpants, both in black, along with white sneakers. A modest and totally casual look, but it did the trick.

By the way, Komachi even used my lack of clothes as an excuse. In a second, like a ninja, she turned into smoke. And she left me and Yukinoshita behind.

"Mom gave too much money, onii-chan! Komachi will make sure to turn you into a BadBoy, just wait and enjoy your date!"

"This isn't a date… haaa… At least buy a new Sobu uniform, I'll need it."

"You can leave Onii-Chan!"

I internally smiled at that memory. Very cunning little sister, but I know what you're doing. It will not work.

Anyway, it was close to noon, that is, close to lunch. Which means I was starving!

I wished I could eat a few things on the way, but most stores didn't allow snacks, so I held back. And considering Yukinoshita's slowness in choosing a gift, my life was doomed. I needed to change that and fast!

"So, what's the next step?"

"I'm not sure. I don't know what Yuigahama-san is interested in or likes. I have almost nothing about her…"

Yukinoshita said, giving the biggest sigh I've ever seen.

Haa… Has this inexperienced girl ever tried to please anyone? Honestly, I'm surprised she puts so much effort into something so simple.

"If you want to give someone a gift, instead of thinking about what they like, you should think about what they need. Trying to guess is useless. It's like recommending an expensive wine without being an expert."

Believe. People who say they know everything, don't. And those who know don't admit it, because nobody teaches anything for free in this life. It's ridiculous. That said, it seems that Yukinoshita understood what I meant and moved to a nearby store.

Heading towards the kitchen utensils area, she rummaged around for a while while I fiddled with my smartphone. A while passed and Yukinoshita came towards me wearing a dark apron with a cat's paw stamped on the chest.

Yes, that makes sense...

Yuigahama is terrible in the kitchen. Her food is bad in an inexplicable way. And considering she was constantly working to improve in that aspect. Yukinoshita's choice has her rebound point.

"So what do you think?"

"Asking me? Well… I'd say it suits you."

That was it… This apron matched Yukinoshita perfectly, giving her persona an elegant and homely look. She would be pretty with anything, so I could only praise her. Although whether that compliment was effective, I don't know, as Yukinoshita turned his face to an angle I couldn't see.

"...Thanks, but I meant Yuigahama-san in that apron and not me."

"Nah! A funky, colorful apron suits her best."

"How rude, but it's accurate enough. In that case…"

Yukinoshita turned around and grabbed another apron, a pink one. She showed it to me for a second, to which I nodded and then she moved to the cash register. Interestingly, she carried the black apron as well. How interesting…

FOOD!

"Hep!"

With a jump, my body jerked towards Yukinoshita. I almost fell on top of her...

"What?"

Turning around, she asked me coldly, not much enjoying my approach.

"Yeah… It's close to lunchtime and I wanted to get something to eat. So I was thinking about ending the day."

I spoke a little nervously, hoping the Queen wouldn't cut me off for sexual harassment. Yukinoshita finally nodded.

"Makes sense, I already bought what I needed, so…"

"So it's over. I got a message just now. I'm meeting Komachi at the Cats Cafe, so goodbye."

Saying goodbye to the Queen, I turned out of the store, looking for the diner Komachi claimed to be in. My stomach was burning, and it felt like gastric juice was what would be ingested if I didn't eat anything. I need to run!

Then, when was one step away from disappearing into the crowd…

"Wait a second, Hikigaya-Kun."

Feel a brief tug on my sleeve. It was Yukinoshita holding me.

"Considering the time, I think I'll get something to eat too. So show me the way to this diner, I suppose."

"Are you sure? I thought a restaurant sounded better than a diner to you."

"I may not appreciate those Ramen shops you talk about so much, but even I can eat in simpler places. So forget about it and let's go."

She walked past me decisively while I just stared at her suspiciously. Seems like Yukinoshita was really willing to go to this diner for the food and not for the existence of the word CAT, right?

How much does she like the damn cats anyway?

Sighing, I started walking along with her. Considering she allowed me to get close earlier while pretending to be her boyfriend, there shouldn't be any more problems, right?

"Oh my, Yukino-chan?"

"...Nee-san?"

Hell! How wrong was I now!

"What are you doing here?"

Yukinoshita coldly asked towards the female figure in front of us.

Asking for a break from what appeared to be her group of friends, the unknown girl who exuded femininity came towards us.

She was stunning in a frightening way. Her short black hair was shiny, her skin seemed to be as soft as cotton and her charming smile combined with her slender body practically invited any man to want to take a look or two. Possibly Three…

Now that I think about it, Yukinoshita called her sister, in her case, older sister, and looking between the two it's impossible not to notice the similarities.

Honestly, the Yukinoshita genetics were on another level. Both sisters were face to face and if anyone were to observe them, they could mistake them for being models. Although, if I were to make a comparison, Yukinoshita would be a winter model while her sister would be one with a summer mood. Her beauties were opposites like that.

"Yukino-chan, don't tell me you're on a date?"

And so the eldest Yukinoshita's constant ordeal began. She nudged her little sister, asking if I was her boyfriend. Which we obviously deny all along.

In the meantime I found out that her name was Haruno. And after about ten minutes of her teasing me I realized two other things about her persona. First, her bust was generous, the complete opposite of her little sister, who was practically a board. Second, nothing about her smelled good to me. And I wasn't talking about her perfume...

That's why when she was finally gone, I breathed the biggest sigh of relief I could muster.

"Your sister is amazing…"

"She IS what everyone says. An excellent student, with an attractive face and body, full of talents and a sweet and very sociable personality. Basically a perfect woman. Everyone praises her..."

"Really, but almost the same can be said of you. Is that by any chance your way of bragging about her or what?"

When I asked that question, Yukinoshita looked at me in confusion. So I sighed as I watched Haruno's form disappear into the crowd.

"When I say amazing, I mean about this barrier she puts around her. Like an armor or a shell that hides something really different inside. Something very false…"

I said frankly. Because I knew that while there are good girls in the world, convenient girls are basically non-existent. And as a result of my words, Yukinoshita shot me a look of pure surprise that in the next second turned into a smile I couldn't discern.

"...Though their eyes are poor, they can see through things no one else can. How unexpected."

"Was that supposed to be a compliment, Yukinoshita-san?"

"The greatest of all, Hikigaya-kun. The greatest of all…"

This exchange left me a little confused. Yukinoshita was just standing there looking at me with what appeared to be admiration. Although I refused to believe that it was. Seems like hell can freeze over sometimes, after all...

I don't know exactly what kind of relationship Yukinoshita had with her older sister, but it sure wasn't the best. And that was none of my business either.

"Wof! Woof!"

As soon as I decided to put that aside, a bark echoed through the mall's floor, drawing the public's attention. When Yukinoshita and I shifted our attention to the origin, what we saw was a small, orange-furred animal running towards us.

"U-a dog?"

"Wof! Woof!"

"Hi-Hikigaya-kun!"

As the dog ran towards us, Yukinoshita stealthily grabbed my shoulder, trying to hide. Looks like she didn't like dogs.

Shrugging the queen's attitude, i decides to extend her arms to that animal. His energetic, clumsy run suggested that he was friendly, and for some reason, I feel his joy was aimed at me. So I waited.

"..."

I waited and waited and waited. But his leap into my arms never came.

"...WOF!"

In the next moment, the barking that was once friendly became something more hostile.

"WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!"

The damn animal just started growling at my direction. Taking a few steps back as if to get away.

"W-as expected of Hikigaya-kun. T-even dogs hate him…"

"Don't say that while you're clinging to me in fear, woman."

I replied a little annoyed to a Yukinoshita who covered her eyes in dread. Seriously, could it be the worst situation and she still finds the strength to mock me?

I just sighed and decided to turn my attention to the animal. But when I did, he was no longer there. Apparently, the dog turned around and ran past the crowd, disappearing completely from view.

"That was close…"

Yukinoshita sighed in relief beside me. Still shaking and clutching the hem of my clothes. I looked at her delicate handshake and noticed how wrinkled my garment was. Dammit, Yukinoshita! This outfit was purchased today...

Sincerely. I would have complained to her if it hadn't been for Komachi's text asking if I was still coming to the cafeteria.

"Komachi is still waiting for me. Are you coming with me or not, Yukinoshita?"

I asked, already tired of it all. My stomach was growling and I've dealt with too many headaches in a single day. I really just want to fill my belly and go home.

"M-very well…"

Luckily, Yukinoshita nodded, although she was still a little scared.

In that order, I took the lead with Yukinoshita in tow. And as we walked side by side, we didn't notice the distant figure of a girl with pink hair, holding a dog across her chest and staring at us with a perplexed, incredulous look.

The cat cafeteria was in a narrow, secluded space in the mall. It wasn't the fanciest place or anything. The only thing that set it apart from the rest were the cats that roamed freely, stealing food from the customers' tables. That's not very hygienic, is it?

In any case, our stay was peaceful and pleasant. Yukinoshita and my little sister were focused on petting the cats. I also tried to make friends, but it seems like everyone hated me.

And now, it being about two in the afternoon and after a good five meals, we were finally on our way home.

Yukinoshita and my little sister were in front of me, walking side by side as they talked. Or it would be more like Komachi trying to hold a conversation with her. As for me, she was serving as a workhorse.

Apparently my little sister only contacted me so I could carry her shopping bags. I was amazed at the amount of clothes she bought, and even more amazed to know that most of them were for me.

"Don't forget to reciprocate with the housework during the summer vacation, onii-chan."

That's what she said when she handed me the bags. Honestly, I didn't ask for clothes, you know? But considering I want to be a stay at home husband in the future, I think it will be good training. So everyone wins.

"Say, Komachi-san and Hikigaya-kun…"

Yukinoshita spoke casually, stopping in front of us and looking towards a place in the mall.

"Do you want to watch?"

Looking towards where Yukinoshita pointed. We saw what would be an open space covered by a carpet of grass. In it, there was a group of kindergarten children. Everyone was seated and looking forward to the show that would take place on the stage ahead.

The poster said "Puppet Show- Special Edition of Pan-san the Panda." in large, bold letters. Underneath was a smaller sign saying "Special gift from Pan-san to those who stay until the end." And with that I understood that it was about those children's events where adults take their children to kill a few hours.

In the past, my parents would take me to many of these events and then leave me alone to do other things. Funny, with Komachi this never happened. And not even father! I know you and mom didn't keep me waiting for like three hours by chance!

Good thing that security came and warned them for leaving a crying child alone for so long. I thought I had been abandoned, damn it!

And now that I've brought those traumatic memories back myself, I wasn't going to stay another second in this damn place.

"I-"

"OOHHH! A Pan-san the Panda Show? Yes, yes, Yukino-san! Komachi adores him and I'm glad you want to watch it with me and my worthless brother here."

Cutting through my objection, Komachi spoke in a high, gleeful tone that threatened to open the gates of heaven. Yukinoshita also nodded, a little embarrassed, and both girls started walking towards the event place.

"Hi! I didn't even say if I wanted to-"

"Come on, Onii-Chan! Komachi wants to watch the show too!"

Grabbing my arm tightly, my little sister dragged me over to the wooden benches where the adults used to sit and watch the younger ones.

I really didn't want to watch a children's show, but when you have a little sister-shaped storm, it's impossible to go against the tide. And now I find myself sitting next to Komachi, followed by Yukinoshita, ready to see a half-assed show from a drunk panda.

This is going to be shit...

"Oh, it's you Hikigaya."

A familiar, feminine voice whispered beside me.

Turning my attention, I realized it was a girl with blue hair tied back in a ponytail. She wore a gray blouse along with light blue jeans that gave a mature, elegant impression. In her hands was a camera, used to take pictures of the groups of children in front of us.

What was her name again? It was Ka… Kawa… Kawasa… Kawasamising, right?

"It's Kawasaki."

I almost hit!

"I know my name isn't very memorable, but yours is a lot worse, you know."

"Sorry…"

I replied softly to which Kawasaki huffed in annoyance. At that moment, my little sister recognized the delinquent along with Yukinoshita. A few greetings here and there and then the topic of our unusual presence in a mall on Sunday was asked by Kawasaki.

"We're here to buy a birthday present. In this case, for Yuigahama-san."

replied Yukinoshita casually, causing Kawasaki to raise her eyebrows in a little surprise.

"I see… Maybe I should buy one too…"

Kawasaki looked at the floor. The last part of what she said came out so softly that practically only I could hear it.

"Have you been close to Yuigahama lately?"

I asked a little surprised.

So Yuigahama started interacting with Kawasaki too? As expected of a nice girl.

"No, really… I just… It was thanks to you guys that I was able to have more time to study and plan my future in a more relaxed way. I also made more time to hang out with my little sister. So I just wanted to give it back."

Kawasaki said a little embarrassed as she waved at a little girl sitting next to the other children. She was a little girl with blue hair and looked like she was in elementary school. So Kawasaki had a little sister too, huh…

"So, when you go to the party, don't forget to call me so I can thank Yuigahama too."

Seeing Kawasaki's genuine smile, neither of us failed to nod in agreement. And so the puppet show began, with the kids screaming with happiness and Kawasaki taking lots of pictures of her smaller figure. Even Yukinoshita looked excited...

The story basically boiled down to Pan-san defending his bamboo forest from fearsome humans. For you to see what humanity is like. They recognize themselves as a pest.

The climax came when Pan-san got drunk and started fighting at full strength. The entire audience was excited and applauding for this development. Although all I saw was just a dummy being rotated ridiculously. Seriously, was this a puppet show or a beyblade show?[2]

As the story of that idiot panda continued, something was growing inside of me. And to be honest… It was starting to get irritating.

The noise, the commotion and all the rest. Everything was happening in slow motion. And as the hum got louder, I couldn't help but clench my fist and give a small grunt of rage.

"Onii-chan, are you okay? You look pale."

My little sister called out to me, giving my arm a worried squeeze. Of course, this didn't go unnoticed by Kawasaki and Yukinoshita. Both were now staring at me waiting for an answer.

"I… I need to go to the bathroom. I'll be right back."

Blinking slightly, I gave that answer and stood up abruptly. I didn't wait for the girls' calls and moved beyond the people group. I was frantic. Every step I took, every breath even my heartbeat echoed inside my head. I was sweating cold.

It got worse when the noise of people, the sound of machines and that damn rock band in the food court started their shitty shows. Everything was too noisy and I needed to get away from it.

I arrived at the mall's public restroom. I turned on the faucet and started splashing a lot of water on my face. The place was empty, which was good. I stared at myself in the mirror for a few seconds. I was waiting…

"...Haaa..."

I sighed in relief. The bad feeling had passed.

I don't know what the hell had happened to me. Suddenly everything began to sharpen and my perception stirred. It's like I'm at the bottom of the sea, being suffocated by the pressure of the noise. It was distressing.

My cell phone vibrated. It was Komachi asking if I was okay. I gave a positive response and said I was on my way back. A few more good face washes and controlled breaths and I was good to go. I grabbed some disposable paper to dry myself off and gave my clothes one last adjustment before starting to leave the bathroom. As soon as I got to the entrance…

BEAT!

I felt like I had hit a concrete wall, which knocked me almost immediately to the ground.

"Watch where you're going, kid!"

The male voice yelled above me, a lot of anger in its tone. It feels like I bumped into someone… Although, for a second I could have sworn it looked like it was on purpose. Even so, as a polite person who avoids conflict, I still looked at the figure with an apologetic countenance as I massaged my neck. The man in front of me looked like a regular salaryman. Over thirty years of age, he has a scruffy beard, wearing an overcoat like the Zaimokuza and possessing a sullen scowl. The typical corporate slave you can find out there. The only problem was...

"..."

I had completely choked. Not exactly because of the man's appearance, but simply the aura he exuded from his being. Something that made every cell in my body scream to get out of there. As if I were prey in front of a predator.

"Not even apologizing, kid?"

"Ah… I… Uh…"

Nothing came out. The words were stuck in my throat as the man stared at me with an indecipherable expression on face. A sinister impression and even more frightening when a person was looked down on by him. No wonder I gave a quick apology and ran out of there like the coward that I am. Not wanting to look back a second time.

"Tch! Those kids… kukuku…"

A few minutes passed after that fiasco. With a big sigh of relief I met Komachi and the other girls outside the mall. The Puppet Show was over, Komachi had texted at a new meeting place, and now we were all ready to go home.

"Onii-chan sometimes acts so strangely that it makes Komachi worried. Where were you?"

"Like I said, it was in the bathroom. No big deal..."

I gave that answer, though my little sister didn't sound too convinced given the fact that I still looked a little stunned. Wanting to divert her concern, I took the shopping bags I had left in her possession and decided to change the subject, turning my attention to Yukinoshita.

"So, that was the toast of the show?"

"Yes, a great freebie, by the way. Exclusive to the event."

The ice queen responded casually, though there was a hint of glee as she hugged a ball she had in her hands. It was a ball with Pan-san's face on it, obviously. A version of him with a cowboy hat, old west style. Looks like every visitor got one, including Komachi.

"Did you get it too, Kawasaki? Who knew."

"I'm not interested in toys. I just got one for Keika."

Kawasaki said, stroking her little sister Keika's head. The little girl was smiling grabbing her ball. She was very cute. Keika then finally realized my existence and cast a curious look, shaking her older sister's hand in the process.

"Who is he, Saki-nee?"

"This is another classmate of your sister's, Kei-chan. His name is Hikigaya Hachiman."

"He's also my Onii-chan, Kei-chan. So be nice to him."

Komachi butted in, clinging to my shoulder with an idiotic expression. Although cute enough. Finally getting her answer, Keika nodded a few times before flashing me a beaming smile.

"So it's Haa-chan! Nice to meet you!"

"Ohh… It's my pleasure, Kei-chan."

She got my name wrong but... What the hell is this? It's very cute!

I don't know exactly what that feeling is, but it eased my earlier discomforts. Seriously, who knew that there was another angel wandering the earth just like Totsuka? This glow of cuteness purifies the darkest and most wicked soul. Long live the little sisters!

"So I guess this is where we say goodbye, right?"

Yukinoshita spoke with his usual stoic expression. In that order, we all nodded. It was late and I honestly couldn't take it anymore. However, Kawasaki manifested herself by raising her hand, as if it were something important, and left Keika walking alone beside her as we headed towards the street.

"I wish I had said this sooner, but I decided to wait until the show was over and Hikigaya came back. And in short, I found the figure of Yuigahama wandering around the mall alone with her dog. She looked downcast."

When that revelation came, both me and Yukinoshita and Komachi widened our eyes in a bit of surprise. The only one who remained indifferent was Keika who was focused on playing with her ball.

"Has Yui-san been here? This is unexpected. If I had known she would have sent a message, but why did she look downcast, Saki-san?"

"I-I don't know… I watched her from afar and I got the impression that she was sad about something."

Kawasaki spoke up, a little hesitantly, as Komachi had no sense of space when talking to someone, let alone a loner. I think my little sister doesn't realize that Saki isn't used to these advances, unlike me who's Komachi's brother. Anyway, while we had doubts about what was going on with Yuigahama, Yukinoshita came up with an important question:

"Just to be sure. Was her dog by any chance small and orange, Kawasaki-san?"

"Hm? I think so… He seemed to be quite energetic too."

"I-I see…"

Yukinoshita stuttered a little and narrowed his eyes, snaking the floor. Then she gave me a sideways glance.

"Hikigaya-kun, do you think-"

"Maybe…" I interrupted. "We have to talk to Yuigahama to be sure."

I gave this answer to Yukinoshita at the moment when there was a mutual understanding on the matter. If the dog from earlier is actually Yuigahama's, it means there's a good chance she saw us shopping. And that may have caused some misunderstanding… Although I don't know why Yuigahama was so down to see me and Yukinoshita together.

I think it's best to have a proper discussion in the club room when the time is right. That was a decision that both the ice queen and I nodded without saying a single word. And that was great.

"Well, I just wanted to say this, so I'm going to say goodbye. Don't forget to notify me about Yuigahama's party."

Kawasaki said, to which we nodded with a small smile. Looks like she's cooler than she looks. It's good to see that part of her.

Giving one last wave of goodbye, Kawasaki turned his attention away.

"Kei-chan hold my hand and… Wait! Where did you go Keika?"

Suddenly Kawasaki's carefree eyes became alarmed when the figure of her little sister was missing. Like Kawasaki, we started scouring where the little girl might have gone. And when we finally found her in sight, fear and despair washed over our faces.

"Ah! Ball-chan, come back here!"

Keika was running after her ball that had slipped away, so far so good. Problem is, she was heading out into the middle of the street with the traffic light open for cars.

"KEI-CHAN!"

Kawasaki screamed in desperation. So loud that it caught the attention of the entire audience and when they noticed what was happening, there was a total fanfare.

HORN!

"Huh?"

The brakes weren't enough to slow the car that was on a collision course with Keika. The girl didn't even have time to notice and in the same second, Kawasaki fired as much as he could to try to save her. Being extremely fast thanks to the adrenaline of fear, like an Olympic athlete.

"KEIKA!"

It was impressive to see her run, but not enough. Kawasaki would not be able to reach his little sister in time and everyone was aware of a possible impending tragedy. People could only scream and close their eyes...

PUNCH!

I don't know how, I don't know when, but I found myself getting hit in the waist area. The force was so strong that I ended up rolling over the hood and hitting the windshield. Using my back as a shield, I gritted my teeth as I felt the pieces of glass graze my skin like razors. As that car slowed frantically, inertia threw me in the opposite direction. Rolling me over the hot asphalt a few times until I finally stopped lying on the curb.

There was only a second of silence, but quickly the driver got out with an agitated look in his eyes. Heading towards us along with other equally desperate human figures.

"SHIT! THAT BEAT WAS HARD! ARE YOU TWO OK?!"

"KEIKA!"

"ONII-CHAN!"

The other figures were Kawasaki and my sister, Komachi. Both with expressions of pure horror and full of tears. Yukinoshita and a few other people followed close behind, equally eager. I didn't care much for them, actually. I only worried about the heat I carried in my arms. A little girl with blue hair, extremely scared and shaking.

"Are you okay?"

I whispered softly, using one of my 108 skills known as "Voice Onii-chan" that soothes the most fragile of a little sister's hearts.

"Hugh… Haa-chan… That was scary… hiccup… scary… hghk! UWAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

I tightened my grip on the little girl who started crying loudly in my arms. Keika even desperately tugged on my shirt in response. She was barely hit by a car...

"Kei-chan! Kei-chan! Are you okay?"

Kawasaki dropped to his knees beside me. Her eyes were weeping, almost as desperate as her little sister's. Wasting no time, I quickly handed Keika to her older sister. Making her receive a big hug from Kawasaki.

"YOU IDIOT! IDIOT! IDIOT! NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN!"

Kawasaki yelled loudly. A mixture of anger and sadness. Serving to make Keika cry even harder and tighten her grip on her sister, apologizing and more apologizing for being such a bad girl.

I watched the scene, and breathed a big sigh of relief. A light and incomparable feeling.

"Hey kid, are you hurt? You blew my car apart, you know?"

The driver, who looked like a normal salaryman, came to my rescue. I took the opportunity to see the state of his car, the windshield was totally cracked. Shit! I quickly threw up my hands and got up to tell the driver I was fine and try to apologize for the inconvenience.

"ONII-CHAN YOU IDIOT! DON'T GET UP SO FAST, YOU JUST BEEN RUN OVER!"

"It's okay, Komachi… I'm fine, I don't feel like I broke anything, really…"

"DON'T SAY THAT AFTER DESTROYING THAT CAR WITH YOUR BEAR BODY, STUPID GOMI-CHAN!"

Komachi intervened, screaming like a madwoman. Then she gave me a bear hug that threatened to lift me into the air. Although it was impossible due to my size and weight being much higher. I would also like to tell my little sister not to hug an injured person, as it can make the situation worse. But other than the small crack in my ass bone, nothing was hurting. I feel only the small shock of the accident, but nothing alarming.

Guess I've become an expert at getting run over, hun...

"Komachi-san, don't hug Hikigaya-kun! You could hurt him even more!"

"Oh sorry!"

When Yukinoshita intervened, Komachi quickly released me. Likewise, the driver asked if Keika or I needed to go to the hospital. Fortunately, Keika was unharmed and as for me, oddly enough, she leaves with only a few rips in my clothes. I didn't have a single scratch myself and that was very lucky...

"But I have to say that was impressive boy. In an instant you showed up and took the girl, it was amazing!"

"I don't know about that, sir. But I apologize for wrecking your car."

"You're kidding! A windshield is nothing compared to the tragedy that could have happened here! You were a hero, kid. Your parents must be proud to have a son as brave as you are."

The driver flashed me a proud smile. Feel until my cheeks heat up at that statement. I could also hear the crowd of people applauding me and sending me praise. A lot of attention for a loner! Mayday! Mayday!

"As expected of Onii-chan! Always saving the day! But are you sure you're not hurt?"

"Sure. Look at me, Komachi. No scratches or bruises. The only thing destroyed is the new outfit you picked out for me. It's a shame."

My little sister rolled her eyes saying it didn't matter. And she began to inspect my entire body for any bruises. She would press on some random parts, asking if it hurt and I would just shrug as Komachi clicked his tongue. Do you want to see me hurt this bad?! Right after that, Kawasaki came towards me and hugged me.

"Thank you…. Thank you… Thank you so much, Hikigaya! I am in your debt."

"Don't say that… My feet moved of their own accord. You might call it big brother instinct."

"It's true, but still, thanks for protecting Kei-chan."

Kawasaki continued to hug me, making me very red. Keika did the same and grabbed my right leg. And if you consider that Komachi also came to hug me from behind. Now I've turned into a human sandwich, fish-eye flavor.

In the same scene, people started to disperse with smiles on their faces as some paramedics from the mall came to check on the situation.

"You did it again, as expected of you, Hikigaya-kun…"

Yukinoshita who watched me being hugged, whispered something to nothing. As I hadn't heard right, I moved my head towards her with a raised eyebrow. All I got was a sweet, gentle smile that made me even more embarrassed.

In a dark alley near Chiba's central mall, a figure wearing a brown overcoat was intently observing recent events. He envisioned a young man saving a child from being run over.

That boy's speed, reaction and even stamina were remarkable to the unknown figure.

"How unexpected to be able to find another one around these neighborhoods… kukuku…"

Grinning grimly, the figure turned away from the darkness of the alley, letting his overcoat sway with the movement. The excitement over what he would see next was such that his tired salaryman's eyes turned completely orange with sheer joy. In the literal sense of the word.

"Let the hunt begin!"

Chapter over 9k words...

A bigger and slower chapter, isn't it? But that's exactly how I like it. Create a normal situation full of abnormalities.

Looks like Hachiman's body is being prepped, huh... The next chapter starts the action, so wait. :)
