Chapter 2: Meeting Mirabel
The next day, you woke up late. It shocked you a bit, but everyone has their bad days.
Your mother had already made breakfast for you, having woken up first that day. You thanked her for the meal and left the house. Exploring was your favorite thing to do. Finding new things was so exciting to you. Little did you know, finding a person was so much more fun.
"Morning, Camilo!" you called to him. He seemed to be walking with someone. You observed her. She had curly hair, just like Camilo's, bright hazel eyes behind light green glasses, she wore a dress covered in butterflies, and a blue pouch. It was like she was a living embodiment of charm. To put it simply, she was just immensely pretty. "Hey, Y/N! Have you met Mirabel? She's my cousin." Camilo greeted you back.
"Hi! I'm Mirabel. I don't think we've met." The girl you now know as Mirabel held out her hand for you to shake. "No, I don't think we have. I'm Y/N." you blushed slightly as you shook her hand, it was surprisingly soft. An awkward silence surrounded the three of you. It was you who broke it. "So, Mirabel, what's your gift?" She looked away nervously, looking uncomfortable.
"She didn't get one." Camilo replied for her. You were looking for words to reply, but you just said some subconsciously. "That's okay! Maybe being unique is your gift!" Mirabel smiled a little. You can tell you lifted her spirits just a bit.
Suddenly, kids swarmed the three of you. "Mirabel! You promised to play with us!" One said. "And read us stories!" Another chimed in. "And sing us songs!" A third said. (Was that coffee in his hand?) "Hey, I didn't promise the song!" Mirabel looked at the both of you with gleaming eyes. "Sorry, I've gotta go. It was nice meeting you, Y/N!" She was tugged along with the kids, like a wave pulling her into the sea. You stared after her, not noticing that Camilo said something like, "Bye, Y/N. I hear Mama calling me." You heard Pepa calling Camilo a second time, and just like that, it started to rain.
Dolores offered for you to stay at Casita until the rain stopped. You saw the inside of Casita just yesterday, but now it's like you know it all too well. She didn't have room for you to stay in, so, she brought you to Mirabel's room. "Sounds like she's not in there. Stay in here for the time being." Dolores said, giving out one of her famous squeaks, and walked away.
The walls of the nursery were calming to you. The bed was bouncy and soft, and the quilt was warm. You flopped back onto the comfortable bed and closed your eyes. A smooth rocking began, Casita was trying to rock you to sleep. "Thank you, Casita." you murmured, slipping into a dreamless sleep.
"Y/N? Y/N, wake up!" You sleepily blinked your eyes open. Hazel eyes, just behind light green glasses, were inches away from yours. Mirabel was holding a clock up to your face, it was 10. When did she come back? Your face flushed, realizing her closeness. "I got back at 9, the kids held me back for so long." she explained, seeming to read your mind. You got up in silence, embarrassed that she found you in her bed. "Oh! Mama!" you gasped. It was late. You knew she let stay out until 9, but for some reason, you came back at 8 instead.
"Bye, Mirabel! I have to go!" you called, dashing for the front door. Casita opened it for you. There was no time to say thanks, you needed to get home
