A/N: Hey thanks for following along. Just a bit of fluff today and some actual plot development! (shocking! I know.. there is an actual structure in between the naughty bits!)
Emma arrived at the scene just in time to see Grumpy hurling a brick at the diner. "Leroy! What the hell?" His head flipped around and he scowled at Emma in a drunken stupor.
"What do you want, Sheriff?"
"I want you to back off and stop doing damage to public property." She jostled him by the arm and pulled him away from the small crowd gathering out front. "What happened and why are you taking it out on Granny's?"
He slurred and fidgeted to try and get out of her grasp. "None of your beeswax, sister! Go save someone else!"
Emma cuffed him and pulled him along to the station in a huff. She was so annoyed at him. "Yeah well, you made it my beeswax when you started throwing shit."
She locked him up in the cell and screeched her chair against the tiles angrily grabbing the forms she'd now have to complete for the incident. "Leroy, I am really pissed at you right now. Why were you throwing bricks at Granny's?"
Leroy huffed and took a seat on the cot. "I'm sorry. I just lost my temper. Blue riled me up saying some crap about dwarfs knowing their place and tried to tell me I couldn't even speak to her! Can you believe it? We're all cursed here and she's still going on like she's the top dog."
"What? That still doesnt explain why you were throwing crap at Granny's."
"Because she was sat there scowling at me like I'm a waste of space! I wanted to show her just how powerless she is in this town. She's got no sway over me!"
Enma rolled her eyes and sighed loudly. "Oh great! Thanks man, now I gotta fill out the attemptive assault form. Damn it! You really need to go see Archie or something for that temper. I can't keep doing this Leroy. Enough's enough." She fiddled with the paperwork for assault and decided not to fill it out. He didn't actually mean to hurt her by the sounds of it, just knock her off her high horse. Emma really couldn't blame him in all fairness. Blue was a tough cookie. "Why did you want to talk to Blue anyway?"
Leroy grunted. "I didn't wanna talk to Blue! I went to see Nova. I thought now we are awake but still stuck here, she might wanna pick things up again. Blue wouldn't let me see her. Told me she's been promoted to a wish fairy and that she couldn't associate with dwarfs."
Emma's eyes widened. "Wow. I didn't know you two were close. I'm sorry to hear that. Did Blue say where Nova was? I've actually been looking for her."
Grumpy slumped down on the cot and yawned. The alcohol was starting to make him sleepy. "Nope. Good luck with that. Blue keeps them all on a tight leash. She's worse than the Evil Queen. At least Queenie let her minions out to play." He sniffed the air. "It stinks in this cell."
Emma's face reddened. "Can't smell as bad as you."
"Ugh! I'm gagging on that air freshener or perfume or whatever it is. Seriously, lay off it the next time you arrest me."
Emma clenched her fists and teeth. "Leroy, maybe stop making me arrest you, huh? Ever thought about that?" Her face was still red but at least he was referring to Regina's perfume and not something else. She got out of her chair and paced over to the bars. "Look, I am happy to let you go on two conditions. One, you go and apologize to Granny and pay for her window. Two, you go and make some appointments with Archie for that temper."
Leroy turned his head on the cot and scrinched up his nose. "Nah, sounds like too much effort. I'd rather stay here for the night. I accept my punishment." He turned his head towards the back wall and got comfortable.
"Hey! You ever think maybe I got better things to do than baby sit you? Seriously man, if you sleep here, it means I gotta sleep here too."
Grumpy laughed. "Good to know the Sheriff is really invested in keeping the town safe!"
Emma narrowed her eyes at him. "Oh please, Leroy! The only danger you present is getting blind drunk and pissing me off. You can do that from home. Come on. I'll drop you back. Just lay low for a few days." She opened the cell and gave him a shove.
"Are you serious? You're just gonna let me go like that? What is it? Got a hot date?" Leroy chuckled amd got up unsteady on his feet.
"Yup. Picking my kid up from school, so move it!" She gave him another gentle shove by the shoulders and marched him out the station. She put him in the back of the bug and opened all the windows. He really did stink of booze. She had a moment questioning her sanity turning the key in the ignition. Would she be doing this if she didn't have plans? Probably not. Possibly, she'd have kept him at least until he sobered up.
Leroy groaned as the car started moving. Emma checked in the rearview mirror to make sure he wasn't going to be sick. It was a short drive at least and she walked him up to his front door. "I'm serious, Leroy. You go by tomorrow and apologize to Granny. I'm gonna ask Archie to check in on you in a little while. Stay out of trouble and off the hard stuff. Got it?"
"Got it, sister."
She made sure he got inside and she text Archie to let him know her plan before driving back towards the diner. The damage wasn't too bad. Just a broken window, thankfully nobody was close by when it shattered. Granny was taping some cardboard over the hole. "Good job you got to him before me, Sheriff."
Emma giggled. "Don't I know it. Sorry about that."
Granny shook her head. "Hey, it's not your fault. He's a pain in the ass, but at least it was only my window and not someone's face."
"Agreed. On both counts. Here, stand back, let me try something."
Granny stood back and watched curiously as Emma raised her hands up towards the broken glass and focused her magic. A white beam shot out of her finger tips and began winding its way through the glass making the sharp edges glow. They started growing out like snowflakes forming, or crystals. Emma smiled as the edges met in the middle and sealed themselves shut into one, whole piece without any sign of damage.
Granny nodded her head with an impressed expression. "Not bad, Emma. Wanna come and take a look at my fryer?"
Emma laughed feeling the satisfying rush of letting her magic out and doing something useful with it for a change. "Me and hot oil, not a good idea. Gotta go pick up Henry. Have a great weekend, Granny."
She skipped back to the car and was pleased to see she'd managed to avert all crises before picking up time. The bell rang just as she pulled up outside the school and the kids came running out. She honked the horn when she saw Henry amid the group and he waved before running over and jumping in the passenger side. "How was school, kid?"
"Boring. How was work?" He smilled back.
"Not completely boring." Emma grinned and gave him a playful shove. They chatted about the small stuff for the rest of the drive back to the mansion and Regina's Benz pulled up just a few seconds after Emma. She locked up the car and leant back against it watching the mayor walk up the path.
Regina quirked an eyebrow. "I went to the school. Thankfully, I saw your yellow monstrosity pulling away before I called out a search party. I thought you'd still be stuck with the dwarf."
Emma shrugged. "He was just drunk. I took him home and told Archie to drop in for a chat."
Regina rolled her eyes and signalled for Emma to follow her inside. "Well, I can't say I'm thrilled at the idea of you letting him off the hook so easily, but I suppose the alternative was more punishment for you and I."
Emma winked. "Exactly." The fell in step and Regina swung the door open. Henry ran off to get showered and settle in for the night. "He never goes that easily when he's at mine."
Regina kicked off her heels and yawned. "Well, it was a late night for him last night. He's probably exhausted, as am I. My arms are particularly achy for some reason." A smirk appeared on her lips and she plodded into the kitchen with Emma following behind.
"Must be all the paper pushing. No upper body strength." She grinned and caught Regina's yawn. "I did a bit of magic earlier. I managed to impress Granny."
Regina's eyes widened. "Well that in itself deserves a toast. Eugenie is not one for compliments." She grabbed a bottle of white wine out of the refrigerator and popped the cork before filling two very large glasses. "What did you do?"
Emma took a big gulp of the offered wine and felt her muscles begin to unwind. "I just fixed her window. I tried that new thing you taught me."
Regina laughed hard. "Dare I ask what exactly?"
Emma blushed and put the wine glass down on the counter before stepping closer and wrapping her arms around the petite brunette's waist. "I meant, I used passion instead of anger to make it work."
"I see. Is that your way of telling me you approve of my unorthadox training methods?"
Emma sealed their lips together in a slow and tender kiss.
'Maybe.'
'Good. I can work with maybes.'They broke the kiss and Regina got to work pulling various ingredients out of her cupboards.
"How was the rest of your day?" Emma asked perching on one of the high stools.
"It was fine. I kept my afternoon free today. I had a feeling you were going to want me at the station for something." She chuckled darkly and began chopping some onions.
"Trust Leroy to be a dick today. Ugh, Did you know he and Nova had a thing?"
Regina inhaled sharply. "No, I did not! Good for him! Blue is notorious for breaking up any none fairy connections. She's so uptight about these things. I bet she's miserable about it! Good." It really tickled her that Grumpy was getting some and even more so knowing the Fairy Queen was bound to be pissed about it. She really hated Blue.
"Well, actually, she won't let him see her. It's so cruel. Sounds to me like she made her a wish fairy just to keep her away from him."
"Ah, now his name makes sense. Yeah Blue's always been a cruel bitch. What she did to Tink crossed some serious lines, and that's coming from me!"
Emma's ears pricked up. "Okay, you gotta tell me about you and Tink. How did that happen?"
Regina scrunched up her face. "Do you really want to know?" Emma nodded with a serious face. Regina rolled her eyes and shoved a dish in the oven before sitting down at the island with Emma.
"It wasn't serious. Actually, Tink was supposed to introduce me to my supposed soul mate. We uhm, well, we went to the tavern, she showed me the guy and I didn't get it. She tried to tell me I was afraid of letting anyone into my heart again. Maybe I was. One thing lead to another. I said I'd prefer to be with her than some stranger I'd never spoken to. We hooked up a few times. When Blue found out she was helping me find my soul mate, the bitch cut off her wings. Imagine what she would have done if she knew what we were really doing?"
Emma shook her head in utter disbelief. "That's crazy! Why would would she do that?"
Rgina took a big glug of her drink and sighed. "Because she can. She can dress it up however way she wants, but she was always vengeful, long before I ever was. She had it out for me since the day I was born. That's why I never got a wish. That's the thing with Blue. She manipulates everyone around her just so she can say, told you they were evil, when anyone questions her intentions." Regina was seething talking about the Fairy. She looked at Emma with sadness in her eyes and leant across to caress her cheek.
"I see now, what Snow did to you, It was just another of Blue's manipulations. As much as I hate your mother, I hate Blue more."
Emma pulled Regina in for a cuddle and she did not protest. "Wow. I was just looking for some juicy details to see how I stack up next to a fairy!"
Regina laughed and hugged her tighter. "Oh, Emma. Considering what you've seen of my mind, I'm surprised you haven't realized that every bed partner I've ever had has resulted in some dark and twisted scandal."
Emma kissed the top of her head. "Fuck! You really know how to set the bar impossibly high, don'cha!"
"Well perhaps it's time that bar came down. I didn't like it much in the first place."
Henry appeared in the kitchen and grabbed a soda out the refrigerator announcing his presence with a hiss. "Sorry. I was thirsty." He looked sheepish as both sets of eyes went to him. He hadn't meant to interrupt them, especially after hearing more than he knew he should have or ever wanted to. He disappeared back out of the kitchen and into the lounge with Regina calling after him.
"He's still not great with this."
Emma shook her head. "He's just weirded out. He'll be fine. No more traumatized than any other kid his age whose parents show their love in front of their children."
Regina felt her magic spark with Emma's again as she bristled at the word she obviously hadn't meant to say in that way. She stepped away feeling too overwhelmed with the closeness. "I'm going to finish dinner. Go and keep him company for a while."
Emma did as she was told leaving Regina to gather herself in the kitchen. The whole Blue conversation had left her feeling on edge. Something wasn't right. She and Emma had shared so much so quickly and she knew Nova's wish had played a large part in them getting together. Of course, they knew now there was something there between the lines long before the fairy ever got involved. That wasn't what worried her.
Regina was no savior and had no interest in getting unnecessarily involved with other people's problems, but she needed to speak to Nova before Blue got to her, if she hadn't already. She shook her thoughts from her mind and switched off the oven before charging into the lounge. "I need to pop out for a while. Will you be okay here with Henry?"
Emma looked at her with worry written all over her face. "Sure, but we can come with if you want."
Regina plastered on a smile. "No, stay here. Henry's just had a shower. I won't be long. I just need to make a house call." She disappeared in a poof leaving Emma feeling unnerved. Her girlfriend, the mayor, also known as the Evil Queen to most, did not make house calls unless it was to stir up some crap. Sure, she trusted her with a lot, but something niggled in her stomach.
"Any idea what that's about, kid?"
"Nope but I'm hungry."
"Yeah me too."
Regina poofed in front of the convent and looked up to see which windows had lights on. Since the curse broke, Blue had put up a protection spell blocking any unwanted visitors from entering. She reached out to test the barrier and it sparked like an electric shock. She retracted her fingers wincing at the pain. She tried her magic knowing it wouldn't bring the barrier down but hoping it act as some some of alarm.
She blasted it a few times relishing in the feel of using force for the first in a while. She grinned evily as she allowed her hatred of Blue to fuel her attack. It worked. Blue came storming out of the convent in a rage. "What do you think you're doing, Regina? You know your dark magic can't break through my protection spell."
"Not the point, but it was fun to try." She sassed feeling every inch her old self.
"What do want? I'm busy."
"I'm sure you are. I can only imagine what fun mother superior is having home alone on a Friday evening. Tell me, how do you keep yourself entertained?" Gosh, she missed having an enemy.
"I'm quite certain you haven't come here for idle chatter. Mayor. Spit it out and give us both a break." Blue snarked back in annoyance pulling her jacket closer around herself.
"I need to speak to one of your girls. Nova. She's the cause of some trouble in town today and I'd very much like an explanation." It was risky playing it this way but she didn't want Blue sniffing around unnecessarily.
Blue narrowed her eyes. "What exactly do you think she is responsible for? She hasn't left this building in weeks. I hardly see a..."
"Well a Grumpy man in custody would disagree. I need to corroborate her story."
Blue's eyes widened. "I see. I would have thought the Sheriff would be the one to do that job."
"The Sheriff is busy. As I'm sure you are well aware, the deputy is out of town and as usual, the extra work falls on my shoulders. I just need to assure she knows better than to get involved with a known criminal and public nuisance. I'm sure you'll agree, this is in both our interests, and should save more damage to public property." She could see Blue was mulling it over. She would press every button she had to until she gave in.
Blue nodded once looking annoyed. "Give me a moment. I'll see if she's able to come down." Regina burnt a hole in her back as she walked at a snail pace back inside. She knew she was beong deliberately slow and making her wait for her own sick pleasure. She watched the lights go on in the third window across and made a mental note. A sly grin spread on her lips as she imagined letting it slip to Grumpy which room his little fairy fling slept in.
A few moments later Blue came back out with a timid looking Nova fidgeting beside her. Regina glared at Blue. "Give us a moment alone please."
"I am Nova's legal representative and she has requested that I am present whilst she is being questioned."
Regina ground her teeth feeling her rage almost at breaking point. She snarled at Blue then spoke directly to the young fairy. She'd have to try and use some sort of code and hope the dense fairy could understand. She doubted it given her taste in men.
"Fine. Nova, myself and the sheriff have been communicating in great detail and we are aware of everything." She quirked an eyebrow hoping she was following.
Nova's mouth opened a fraction as if to say something. Regina held up a hand halting her. "We, ahem, the sheriff and I, thought it best that nobody else should be made aware of anything, about the reason that certain things have happened. It would be in your own interest, not to mention your involvement, whether intentional or not, to anyone. I imagine this puts you in a difficult position but let me clarify, neither I nor the sheriff wish for you to come to any harm."
Nova was looking confused and Regina's face softened, her eyes pained.
"I know what people think of me in this town, but I see you have good intentions. You need to be careful okay. It's not a threat from me. I just need to make it clear that if you were seen to be in cahoots with someone who is not looked upon favorably here, there would be repercussions. That is the message from the sheriff. If you can perhaps give her a call when you have a moment free, she'd like to make sure you are okay. Good evening."
Regina turned to walk away. Blue was listening to everything. She couldn't risk making it worse by saying something that might get Nova in even more trouble. She felt a bit bad for using Grumpy and giving Blue more ammo to punish her, but a slap on the wrist for that was nothing compared to what Blue was capeable of if she knew Regina had indirectly benefited from any wish work.
"See, Nova. The Queen and I don't agree on many things, but for all her faults, this time, she is right. It's better to keep a distance from him. He's uncontrollable. You're safer with me here." Blue put a comforting arm around Nova and took her back inside, glancing over her shoulder to look back at the mayor hurrying away. It was odd hearing her speak like that again after so many years. It was a glimpse of the young girl before the darkness and it unsettled her.
"I should call Emma to explain that I'm to take my vows."
Blue smiled and nodded. "Yes. Perhaps go and see her instead, tomorrow. The savior is your patron, after all. I wonder what the child of true love will wish for herself."
Nova blushed. She hadn't dared tell anyone about the mishap for fear of her own punishment and ridicule. Also Emma's. All the fairy's were abuzz wanting to know if the savior would wish them all back home and finally free them fully of their curse. She didn't want to break the bad news. "I'm sure it will be something wonderful and unexpected."
"I'm sure it will."
Regina stomped all the way back to the mansion. She could have poofed there but she wanted to clear her head before getting home. She stopped off and got burgers and fries, knowing Henry would be too hungry to wait another half hour for dinner. One night off routine wouldn't hurt. "I'm home. Dinner's up!"
She slung the take-out bag on the counter and excused herself for a shower. "I'll be down in ten. Help yourselves to whatever you want. Just don't get mustard on my couch!"
She took a quick shower and changed into her navy silk pyjamas and her fluffy robe before heading back downstairs. She stood in the doorway smiling at the sight of Emma and Henry squabbling over fries and trying to put each other off their video game.
Emma caught her eye and smiled. "You gonna come join us or are you too refined?"
She went and sat with them on the floor and swiped a fry. "Too hungry and too exhausted to put on airs and graces."
Emma put an arm around her and snuggled into her shoulder. "You smell clean. Can I get one after this?"
Regina scrunched up her nose. "Yes, you may. Henry, did you do your homework?"
Henry shoved a handful of fries in his mouth knowing she hated when he spoke with his mouth full. "Mmm, hmm."
"He didn't, did he?"
Emma shook her head. "Nope but he promised he'd do it tomorrow or no movie night."
Henry rolled his eyes and swallowed. "It's a project. I couldn't do it now anyway. I need toilet paper tubes, pipe cleaners, oh and glitter."
"Hard no on the glitter." Regina scowled.
"Mom!"
"No way! I still can't get it out the rug from the last project and I've used magic. Repeatedly."
"Ma?"
Emma held her hands up. "I'm with your Mom on this one, kid."
Henry huffed. "You're supposed to be the savior. One of the good guys."
Emma got up to take herself off for a shower. "Hey, there's some evils you don't mess with in this world. Trust me, when glitter's involved, it never ends well."
Regina nodded. "It just never ends. There are fresh towels in the second drawer in the bathroom." Once Emma had gone off she picked up the second game controller and Henry walked her through the objectives. "Okay, I think I got it. What's Emma's best score?"
"Level twelve." Henry chuckled.
"And yours?"
"Level seventeen."
"Alright. Let's kick some fairy ass!"
Henry groaned. "Mom, you don't fight the fairies! Just the monsters!"
Regina grinned to herself and got into the game. "Same thing."
Emma came back down a while after and slumped down on the couch yawning. She was technically on call all weekend but figured Regina could poof her into her regular clothes if she needed to leave. She'd borrowed a pair of silky PJ's and another robe which were on a chair in the bathroom. She figured Regina had left out for her.
Regina growled when she failed to pass level three and threw the controller on the floor. "I'm dead again. I think it's time for bed, Henry." She ruffled Emma's hair and smiled. "I think it's your bedtime too."
Emma stretched out her body and nodded. "Sounds like a plan."
The three of them plodded up the stairs. Henry went to brush his teeth and said goodnight to Emma. Regina whispered. "I'll come in once he's settled." She gave Emma a kiss and let her see her thoughts.
'I want to talk to you about something. Give me half an hour and I'll sneak into the guest room.''Looking forward to it.'Regina pushed her towards the guest room and grinned in the doorway. "Goodnight Emma."
"Night Regina."
Emma checked her phone and put the alarm on just in case she forgot then settled against the pillows. She was exhausted and tried to play candy crush to stay awake but it made her eyes bleary. She put the phone down and closed her eyes just to rest them.
Regina snuck into her room about twenty minutes later and saw she was flat out on top of the covers. She groaned but wasn't too disappointed. They'd had a long day. She carefully got in and cuddled up to the sleeping beauty, magicking the duvet from her bed over them and closed her eyes. She pressed a gentle kiss to her cheek and let sleep overtake her.
