When Geri stopped by the Walker - now Davidson - ranch to check in on Gale and maybe get to know Denise better, she bolted straight towards the sink to vomit into it, unable to even make it to the bathroom in time. She groaned as she immediately started cleaning herself up. "Are you feeling alright?" a concerned Gale questioned as she put her hand across Geri's forehead.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Geri swallowed before starting to speak again. "Just have a bout of the flu, I think. Been throwing up for the past few days."
Gale froze. "Past few days?"
"Yeah, why? I should probably head home - no idea what I was thinking coming here now," she murmured.
She snorted. "Oh, Geraldine, you're not contagious. Sit down - I'll make you some dry toast and get you some Saltine crackers. Maybe see if we have some ginger ale while I'm at it." She started bustling through the kitchen to find what she needed in an effort to make her daughter feel better.
Geri frowned. "You don't have to do that. And why do you think I'm not contagious?" She was a bit confused. And still nauseated so the toast and crackers actually sounded good.
Gale took a few deep breaths before handing over the crackers with a smile before getting started on the toast. "Because I think I know what's wrong, darling. Are you late?"
"For what?" Geri asked before nearly smacking herself at that stupidity before she too froze. "I can't be."
"Oh, but you can. After you eat and your stomach's settled, I'll send Dan out for some pregnancy tests."
"I'm not pregnant, Gale. I can't be. Besides, Cordell and I are broken up. We're friends again. This can't be happening now." Fuck, this was the worst possible time. But even as she spiraled over the possibility that she was pregnant, Geri knew she wanted to have the baby. But this wasn't going to be real until she saw the positive pregnancy test for herself.
Dan walked in before Gale could say anything. "Hey, Gale. Geri. You two ladies having fun?"
"Dan, run to the grocery store and pick up a few pregnancy tests, please," Gale ordered.
He blinked at them in confusion. "What?"
Gale rolled their eyes. "Just do it."
And that's when Dan figured it out. "Oh, right, it's not for you." He turned to face Geri and gasped. "Are you knocked up?"
"You're lucky I'm so nauseated I can't yell at you right now," Geri shot back, a glare on her face.
He put his hands up in surrender as he grabbed his keys. "Sorry, I'm going." And then he took off outside, in a rush to get to the store.
Gale sighed. "Men." When the toast popped up, she set them down on the plate and handed them over to Geri.
She started nibbling on them, relieved when her stomach did finally start to settle. "I can't believe that actually works. Good to know."
When Dan returned twenty minutes later, Geri was feeling much better but still anxious. He handed the boxes over to her. "Good luck?"
"Thank you." She marched into the bathroom and took three different tests just to confirm what she already knew in her heart to be true. As terrified as she was about becoming a mother, she was ready for this. But Cordell was a different story. How would he handle it if she was pregnant? There were so many unknowns.
When the timer on her phone rang, Geri closed her eyes for a quick second, knowing Gale was waiting impatiently right outside the door. When she opened them, she wasn't shocked to see all three tests read "pregnant". "Holy fuck." This was really happening.
"What was that in response to? A positive?" called Gale through the door.
Instead of responding, Geri opened the door and handed over a test. "I'm going to be a mom!"
Gale squealed and pulled her in for a hug. "Congratulations! I'm so happy for you. Now go and tell Cordell," she ordered.
"What? Right now?"
"Yes, right now - he's the father and needs to know. You can't hide the pregnancy from him." Gale hugged her again then briefly kissed the top of Geri's head.
"Fine, I'll go. Thanks for everything." She flashed her a weak smile and then fled, hoping Cordell was alone so she didn't have to tell him with his whole family there. They wouldn't have that much privacy, as much as she loved the Walkers. Unfortunately, luck was not on her side but she dragged a confused Cordell into his bedroom anyway and locked the door.
"What is going on?" he asked, deeply confused. His first thought was sex but Cordell knew that wasn't happening when they were broken up and everyone was waiting in the kitchen, likely curious and trying to eavesdrop.
"Sorry to do this now. I still need to see a doctor actually to confirm but three pregnancy tests did the trick anyway." Geri laughed nervously and then cringed.
Stunned into silence, Cordell could only gape at her. "Three pregnancy tests? Three? We're having a baby?" he finally asked.
Geri nodded. "Surprise! I know this isn't planned and we've broken up but this is really happening. We're having a baby, Cordell Walker."
"Holy shit."
"You said it," she agreed, suddenly thankful Gale had stuffed her full of toast and crackers. Geri scoffed. "How are you doing with this? I know it's a shock, so you're still processing, which is okay because so am I."
He patted her shoulder. "Still processing for sure. Y'all just dropped a big bomb on me. Holy shit."
She laughed. "I'm going home. Morning sickness is no joke, by the way. Thank God Gale figured out what the issue was and went to town on the dry toast and crackers. Call me once you wrap your head around this. You're still my best friend and we can rock this co-parenting thing." Geri's heart was breaking and she couldn't figure out why. But she patted him on the shoulder and then left.
Once she left, Cordell stood in silence in his bedroom for about ten minutes before his concerned family called him back in. "Everything alright?" a concerned and worried Abeline asked him once she saw the look on his face.
"Yeah, it's fine," he responded.
"What, did you tell she's knocked up or something?" Stella joked. Her face fell when he didn't respond to her joke with a laugh. "Oh my God, she's pregnant!"
"You got that girl pregnant, Cordell Walker? Don't tell me you scared her away." But Abeline couldn't help but get excited at the thought of another grandchild. A new baby!
"No, she just wanted me to tell me then left so I could process," he responded.
"I'm going to be a big brother? Awesome!" August smirked and then went to turn on the TV.
"I better get a little sister this time," Stella murmured under her breath, eliciting a laugh from her father.
"Congratulations, son. Now what the hell are you still doing here for?" Bonham questioned, shaking his head.
"You're going to be a father again, Cordell. Come to terms with it but get excited! And fix things with Geri." Abeline needed them to reconcile before the baby came along.
"I'm going to be a dad for the third time. Holy fuck," Cordell hissed.
"I'll let the language slide this time," Abeline teased, winking at him.
"Can Stella and I name the baby?" August asked out of the blue.
"Ooh, I love that idea. Suggest it to Geri, please!" Stella agreed.
"Guys, it's a little early for all of this. And I need to go see her. I didn't react as well as I should have. Fuck." He was already screwing this up and he needed to fix it as soon as possible.
"Good luck!" Bonham yelled after Cordell as he bolted out of the house.
Cordell practically flew to Geri's place and he'd apologize for his rudeness later but he didn't even bother knocking, just barged in. "Wow, way to scare me," Geri gently chided once her heart stopped racing from the scare.
He urged her to stand up and when she did, Cordell responded by kissing her and splaying a hand across her stomach. "That's our baby in there. And the first thing I should have done is reassure you and tell you that I am all in, Geraldine Broussard. I can't wait to have this baby with you. I love you."
Geri teared up. "Really?"
"Really. And I don't just mean platonic love, Geraldine. I am head over heels in love with you, and I'm sorry again for pushing you when you found out the truth about the Davidsons being your biological family. I crossed a line. And I feel betrayed because it seems like you chose them," Cordell admitted.
"I didn't choose them over you, Cordi - I want you both in my life - my chosen family and my biological family. But I apologize for making you feel betrayed. And I love you too, Cordell Walker. I've been in love with you for so long." She couldn't remember a time she wasn't in love with this stubborn man.
He laughed and kissed her again. "Glad we're on the same page. And we have several months to figure out what's next." He hoped they were having a girl but it honestly didn't matter to him.
"I can't wait," Geri responded. But she cocked her head. "And Twyla?" she asked, curiosity and jealousy getting the best of her. She needed to work on that.
"A friend, that's all. I just want her to succeed because I know she can do better," Cordell told her.
She sighed in relief and the two of them sat down on the couch. She laid her head on his shoulder as he laid his hand on her still flat stomach.
They had plenty of time to decide their next steps, and baby Broussard-Walker was already loved by both sides of their family. Everything would work out in the end for Geri and Cordell - they'd make sure of it. And with Geri's blessing, Stella and August did get to contribute and were allowed to name their newborn sibling.
