A small she-kit opened her eyes to the bright sun. The first thing she thought was, Wow! Everything's so big!
She looked around the nursery, which smelled of warmth and milk.
She spotted a big black she-cat curled up in the middle of the nest she was sitting in.
That must be my mother! She's very pretty.
Two other kits were curled up at her belly.
One was gray with silver ears, a tom. He's very handsome, she thought.
She examined the other one. It was a jet black she-kit. She looks exactly like my mother. Wait, they must be my siblings!
The big black cat opened her eyes, which were a startling green.
"Owlkit! You opened your eyes! And they're such a beautiful gray!" The big cat purred.
Owlkit? That must be my name. I like it, I guess. But what's an owl? Owlkit thought.
The big cat stared at her expectantly. What does she want me to say? Does she want me to speak? Uh-
Before Owlkit could think of something to say, her sister stirred, yawned and opened her eyes, which were the same bright green as their mother's.
Her mother purred at Owlkit's sister, Owlkit forgotten.
"Hello, Hollykit! Aw, you look so cute!"
Hollykit purred back, "Hi mama!"
Owlkit's brother raised his head, blinking.
"Mama?"
"Oh look at you Stonekit! You have your father's blue eyes!" Their mother exclaimed, happily circling the nest.
Hollykit tumbled out of the nest, and stood, bouncing on the tips of her paws.
"I'm going to go explore camp! Owlkit, Stonekit, let's go!"
Stonekit grumbled with irritation, but his eyes sparkled with excitement.
"I'm going to explore it faster than both of you!" He meowed.
"No way! Last one to make it outside is a kittypet!" Hollykit said to Stonekit with a challenge in her meow.
Owlkit's tail, that had been lashing in excitement, drooped. Did they just forget about me? Well, I'm not being left out, she thought, climbing out of the nest.
"Did your siblings just leave you?" A squeaky voice asked.
Owlkit turned around to see a black tom-kit with blazing blue eyes.
His eyes, there's so much fire in them.
"Who are you?" Owlkit asked, ignoring his previous question.
"I'm Pantherkit, my mother is Flowerdust", he explained, pointing at a dusty brown she-cat.
"I'm Owlkit, that's my mother," Owlkit said, waving her tail in the direction of the big black cat.
"Oh, Darkleaf? She's nice! And are you gonna answer my question?"
"Fine yeah, my siblings just left me," Owlkit sighed.
Pantherkit gasped, "How could they? We should go confront them."
Owlkit shook her head, "No, it's fine. They probably got distracted. Meanwhile, can I play with you?"
"Sure!" Pantherkit exclaimed, but the anger burning in his eyes showed that he didn't forget about Owlkit's siblings ditching her.
Pantherkit scampered over to his siblings.
There was one ginger she-cat with green eyes, and one blue-gray tom with amber eyes.
"This is Flamekit, and this is Stormkit." Pantherkit meowed, pointing to one and then the other. The way his siblings dipped their heads showed that he was clearly the leader of the litter.
Unlike me Owlkit thought.
"Let's play Battle of the Clans! I call Riverclan!" Pantherkit yowled.
Flamekit said, "Then I'll be Thunderclan!"
Pantherkit meowed, "Ok, I'm taking Owlkit for my team!"
Stormkit flicked his tail. "Guess I'm with you then." He muttered to Flamekit.
"Ah! Thunderclan intruders! Riverclan attack!"
Flamekit lept at Pantherkit, and Stormkit tackled Owlkit.
Owlkit smoothed her fur down and slipped out of his grip.
"Ha, it'll take more than that to defeat me, Thunderclan scum!" She yowled teasingly.
Pantherkit bowled over Stormkit, Flamekit still clinging onto his back.
Pantherkit threw Flamekit off him and started churning sheathed claws through Stormkit's belly.
"Do you surrender?" He growled.
"Yes! Riverclan is the best clan in the world and Thunderclan could never defeat them", Flamekit meowed.
Owlkit jumped happily. They won!
Pantherkit turned to her, and she opened her mouth to let out a triumphant yowl.
It caught in her throat, though, when she saw the intensity of his gaze.
Those fierce sky blue eyes… they captivated her, and she forgot about everything except them.
She only thought of his eyes. Those fierce blue eyes.
They stayed etched in her mind long after he turned away.
What just happened? Owlkit wondered. She felt something click inside her. I don't know yet, but it has something to do with Pantherkit. I'll figure it out after I get some sleep.
She yawned, trudging back to her nest where Darkleaf was already curled around Hollykit and Stonekit, listening to their adventures of the clan.
Darkstar gazed at her.
"What did you do today, Owlkit?" She asked gently.
Owlkit climbed into the nest and yawned.
"I played Battle of the Clans with Pantherkit and his siblings. It was fun!"
The Owlkit heard Darkleaf's soothing mew.
"Well, it looks like you all had a great adventure today! Sleep well, my beauties."
Tomorrow, I swear on Starclan, I will find out what happened with Pantherkit and his eyes back then. But now, I really need to rest. Owlkit thought as she drifted into a peaceful slumber.
