Logan entered the medlab on silent feet. He rumbled a quick hello to Hank and Charles who were huddled over the latest test results, before sinking his frame in the chair. His eyes did a cursory sweep of the room out of habit more than anything else, before settling back on Jubilee. He was back on his feet carefully inspecting her when he noticed that she was no longer hooked up to the machines.
"Hank?" He called out, "She's off life support?"
"Yes indeed, my friend," Hank answered excitedly as he made his way to Logan waving a sheet of paper in his hands. "She began breathing on her own about half an hour ago."
"Ain't it too soon ta do that?" Logan asked quizzically. "She can relapse."
"It is a possibility, Logan," Charles piped in, "But her vitals have been gaining strength since we unhooked the machines."
Logan looked at the two nerds, his brows furrowed. Tentatively he reached out his palm to hover over her nostrils. Sure enough, her breath was coming out in strong puffs. His eyes swung back to the Hank, silently asking him if she'll be alright.
"I do believe she is on her way to recovery," Hank grinned. Logan's plasma was indeed doing the work he suspected all along it was capable of. He was going to research this further…if he could get the hardened man staring back at him to agree.
Logan released a breath he wasn't aware of holding. He raked hands through his thick locks, carefully retaking his seat. He took Jubilee's hand in his. "Yer gonna be alright, darlin'," he said in such a soft tone that Hank and Charles were shocked. "But ya gotta wake up fer us. So, we can get ya back ta yer know-it-all self."
Charles silently studied the gruff man who had a heart of gold but hid it out of fear of experiencing the pain he was all too familiar with. His exile had changed him, but Charles sensed that the restlessness in him before was more pronounced now. That more than likely wouldn't be settled until he and Ororo resolved their lingering problems. Charles sighed inwardly. He can only hope that they both wouldn't allow their pride and foolishness to stand in their way. In some way, Charles felt that this was the opening they needed to get their act together. He so desperately wanted to help them along, but it was for the best that they resolve things on their own.
"It is a good sign that she is breathing on her own. She is on her way back to us. Thanks to you."
Logan pierced Charles with a confused look. "Me? I ain't do nothin' but give plasma."
"I beg to differ," Charles replied to his longtime friend. "Not only is it the transfusion, but your presence is doing wonders for Jubilee."
Logan turned away, uncomfortable with the praise. "Well, I'm here fer as long as she needs me."
"You are?" Hank voiced his surprise aloud.
"Yeah. If it's ok with ya both, I'll like ta be involved in her recovery."
Upon hearing this, Charles was now ashamed of his earlier assumption that once Jubilee was out of her coma, Logan would be returning to his isolation. Of course, he would want to take more responsibility for caring for Jubilee. His relationship with the Asian girl was one of a kind and no doubt he was feeling some kind of guilt for being away while she was attacked. "That is more than okay with me, Logan. Whatever you need, just let me or Hank know."
Logan nodded, his mind already spinning with different types of therapy he can implement. So lost in his thoughts that he didn't realize Xavier and Hank were long gone until a whiff of lilies got his attention.
A few seconds later, Kitty entered the room with a box of pizza and a two-liter bottle of sprite. She was grinning from ear to ear.
"There better be meat on that pizza, half pint," he grumbled in lieu of greeting and stood.
"It's nice to see you too, Wolvie," she tossed back, extending her tongue out. She placed the box and bottle on a desk Hank had designated the eating area, before jumping into his arms. "I couldn't, like, believe it when I heard you were back."
Logan patted the girl's back awkwardly. "Well, ya see fer yerself."
"It's, like, really good to see you." Kitty was still grinning.
"Thanks, half pint."
"The Professor sent that for you," she said nodding to the food. "And he said for you to, like, get some rest."
Logan waved her off, opening the box and grabbing a slice. "I'll be alright."
Kitty turned to look at her friend, tears gathering in her eyes. Thankfully her mutant ability had spared her from a fate like Jubilee's.
Logan scented the saline. "No waterworks, half pint," Stuffing half the slice into his mouth.
Kitty swiped at her eyes. "Sorry," she mumbled. "I could have been, like, where she's at, if it wasn't for my powers."
Logan's eyes narrowed. Dammit. Charles did mention she was there. "Sorry, half pint. Didn't even dawned on me ta see how ya were doin'," he said around a mouthful.
"It's ok, Wolvie. I'm ok. Jubi's the one we, like, need to focus on."
"How's everybody else that were with ya that day?"
Kitty sighed. "Rogue and Kurt has nightmares about it. Remy and Bobby say they're fine. We've all been, like, seeing the Professor for counseling."
Logan nodded, making a mental note to talk to the others and Charles to see who and what these Church of Humanity fanatics were all about. Once Jubes was out the woods, he was going to see to it that the sick organization was brought to justice…the Wolverine's justice. Nothing and no one were going to stand in his way of that mission.
He then realized Kitty was looking at him expectantly. "What? I kinda tune out all yer yammerin'."
Kitty shook her head. Same old Logan. "I asked if you're, like, gonna be around for a while."
Logan grabbed a plastic cup from Hank's stash and poured some soda. He grabbed another slice. "Yeah," he exhaled slowly. "Yeah, I'll be around fer a while."
The young girl groaned. "No doubt you'll be, like, training us again."
He grinned, his canines visible. "Gotta talk ta Chuck 'bout it, but there's a good chance I will be."
She left a few minutes later, kissing him on the cheek and with a promise to see him later. Logan didn't know what it was about the younger mutants, but they always managed to pull at his heart strings. He felt good being back so far. The rest of the day went by uneventful and with no change in Jubilee's condition. Hank came to check on her every two hours, taking notes and spewing medical jargon Logan couldn't and didn't want to wrap his mind around. Logan only left for short periods of time to relieve himself, shower and grab a quick bite.
As the clock struck midnight signaling a new day, Logan's head began to sway. The lack of sleep and all the plasma donation was beginning to get to him. His head dropped forward, and he was jolted awake by the force of the movement. He quickly looked at Jubilee to make sure he hadn't missed a thing. He groaned when he saw nothing had changed.
"Dammit Jubes," he said in a rough voice. "Ya need ta beat this. Come on darlin'."
He grabbed her hand and held it tightly, as if willing her to respond. "Ya gotta know how much ya mean ta me, Jubes. I know I ain't one ta say how I really feel all the time, but ya mean the world ta me, darlin'."
"I don't know what it is 'bout ya that got ta me. But ya crawled inta my heart and stayed there. No matter how much I tried ta keep my distance, ya always found a way." Logan shook his head, a smile twisting his lips.
He stood swiftly, running agitated hands through his hair. He held his head as he stared at the girl who he could admit was like a daughter to him. He turned away, stalking to the nearest wall, tempted to ram his fist through it. Instead, he leaned his forehead against it, struggling to maintain his breath. He emitted a series of growls in frustration.
"Wolvie…"
The weak voice had Logan whirling around with manic eyes and a defensive stance. His eyes swung to the bed.
"Jubes? Darlin'?"
"Wolvie? You're here?" Came the reply in a slightly stronger voice.
"Yer awake, darlin'!" His smile stretched wide as he rushed to the bed and knelt, grabbing her hand. He stared at her intently. "Hold on. I gotta go get Hank. Don't move," he called as he rushed out the med lab.
Logan's announcement or rather loud roar for Hank and Charles could have awakened the dead. Within minutes all X-Men were standing outside the med lab, awaiting word on the wakening of Jubilee.
It took Hank almost an hour to thoroughly examine her. "You gave us a scare, my dear. How are you feeling?"
Jubilee groaned. "Like I was burnt to a crisp and ran into a mac truck. How bad is it?"
Charles, Hank and Logan all looked at each other. Charles sighed. "Do you remember how you came to be here?"
"Not sure, Prof. But I think my mom and dad had something to do with it."
They all couldn't help but laugh. Leave it to her to crack jokes at a time like this. "You know what I mean, Jubilation."
"I know," she said closing her eyes. "I remember the ambush and the explosion. I was trapped inside the SUV."
Rage filled Logan. Yeah, his next mission was a must.
"You suffered third degree burns on over half of your body, extensive blood loss and you were in a coma," Charles said matter-of-factly.
Jubilee started to cry immediately. Logan rushed to her side, grabbing her hand. "Don't cry, darlin'. It's gonna be ok. Hank here will get ya back ta tip top shape."
"This is forever, Wolvie! I've seen burned victims before."
"No honey," Hank interjected calmly. "We have the means to get you back to normal. I know we can."
This calmed the hysterical teenager down some. She lifted teary eyes to the doctor. "You can?"
"Yes," Hank nodded excitedly. "But you'll have to get some rest because the sooner we get you into the regeneration chamber, the faster you'll begin to recover."
"Ok doc. You're the boss," Jubilee whispered.
"Now get some rest, we will begin early in the morning." He turned to Logan and Charles. "Let's leave her for now."
Logan glanced back at her. "Ya sure that's a good idea leavin' her alone?"
"It's okay Wolvie. And you look like you haven't slept in days."
Logan laughed. "Ya sure, darlin'? I don't mind stayin' here wid ya."
She rolled her eyes. "Go on."
"I'll be back first thing in the mornin'." Logan then did something that had Charles and Hank gaping in absolute shock. He bent over and pressed a soft kiss to Jubilee's head and whispered an 'I love ya' to her.
"What?" Logan grunted upon seeing their stunned looks. With a smirk, he simply bid them a goodnight and left.
