The Two Holmes Geeks

Two Lovers You Never Want To Meet

The hawk had been a surprise. Shinichi had expected all those detectives, had expected big names (had also expected Hattori, honestly). He had heard about Hakuba Saguru before; there were only a handful of brilliant teen detectives in Japan. Fewer even who were associated with Holmes. Namely two; Kudou Shinichi himself and Hakuba Saguru. Still, the hawk was a surprise.

"Ne, ne, ne, did you say Watson?" asked Conan eagerly in a childish voice, walking up to him.

The bird was gorgeous. Hakuba smiled and went into his knees, holding his hand out for him.

"Yes. Watson is the assistant of my favorite fictional detective, you see," replied Hakuba.

"Sherlock Holmes," stated Conan. "Can I pet Watson?"

"You know Sherlock Holmes? Have you seen the movies?" Hakuba smiled at him indulgently.

How much Shinichi hated this. How much he loathed being treated like a little child, not taken seriously, underestimated. Under normal circumstances, the two could have brilliant conversations about the books, about everything, really. From all Shinichi had heard, Hakuba was a very clever detective. The only one aside from Conan who had ever gotten close to capturing KID.

"No, he reads the books. He gets it from another Holmes geek," Ran chuckled as she joined them.

"The books? You have read books? Another Holmes geek...?" asked Hakuba surprised.

"Kudou Shinichi, the Heisei Holmes," offered Ran. "Conan-kun adores Shinichi and gets... a lot from him. Among them, their love for reading Holmes."

Conan grinned broadly and innocently as he nodded. "Yes! I read all of his books."

That was the moment something changed. The polite friendliness of a near adult talking to a child changed into actual interest as Hakuba leaned in, one hand petting his falcon's head.

"Which one is your favorite?" asked Hakuba eagerly.

An eagerness Shinichi recognized from himself. Rarely did he get to talk about Holmes with someone who was truly enthusiastic about the topic, even less so about the actual books. Most were only familiar with adaptations. A small grin spread over his lips as he answered the blonde.

When asked to about Hakuba Saguru and Kudou Shinichi, Kaito described them as two lovers he never wanted to meet. He had been serious about that, those two should not meet. Them, together, were something to be feared for the thief. They were his greatest challengers, the only ones he genuinely had to worry about capturing him. Yet one old lady inviting them – and a couple other, less interesting and talented detectives – had allowed them to meet.

"Tell me more about Conan-kun," demanded Saguru about a week after the case.

"Who?" Kaito feigned confusion, not looking up from his newspaper.

The vein on Saguru's forehead was pulsing as he crumbled the newspaper between them, forcing Kaito to look at him. "Edogawa Conan, charge of Mouri Kogoro."

"Not ringing a—any bells at a—all," assured Kaito. "Why? Is that your new boyfriend? I am so honored that you feel comfortable coming out to me, Hakuba-kun! Congratulations!"

Hadn't thought it possible for Hakuba to look even more annoyed. "The KID killer. A grade schooler, outsmarting you and by default... also me. Something about that boy is... off."

Well, that was essentially where Kaito had started too. He shook the ripped newspaper out and it was fully intact once more. That way, he could hide his smirk. Oh, he had meant it, he didn't want Hakuba and Kudou to meet, because those two minds together might just be able to put him in jail. They would also be a nightmare in general. But his morbid curiosity found it also fascinating.

"I have no idea what you're talking about. But have fun with your weird little obsession."

"Mouri-chan," Saguru offered his most charming smile. "It's so nice to see you again."

"Right. Yes. Uhm..." Ran frowned a little while trying to be polite. "Are you here to see my father?"

"No. I was..." Saguru paused, knowing how weird it was going to sound. "I'm here to see Conan-kun. I recently acquired an early print of A Study in Scarlet and it's rare to meet-"

"Ah. Holmes geek things," Ran interrupted him with a nod. "Come in. Conan-kun! It's for you!"

Conan came running out of a room, looking curious. There was surprise in his eyes as he spotted the teen detective and Saguru truly hoped that he didn't come off as a creep here. Smiling, he approached the child, hiding the book behind his back. He needed to find out what kind of secret Edogawa Conan was hiding. Mysteries needed to be solved. Just like Kaitou KID's real identity did he truly need to figure out what Conan was hiding.

"Saguru-nii-chan," Conan blinked surprised. "What... are you doing here?"

"I bought a rare, early print of A Study in Scarlet and I think you might be the only person I know who knows to appreciate it. Would you care to take a look?"

Conan blinked some more. What. What nearly-adult/adult would trust a small child with something so rare and valuable? His heart raced when Saguru actually put the book on the table. It was beautiful. And very valuable; he had tried to acquire it himself, before he got shrunk, but had been outbid. Oh, this wasn't good. But it was also so good. He missed being treated with respect, being allowed things that would be normal if he had his normal body. However, Shinichi was also well-aware that this meant Hakuba was suspecting something. The gleam in his eyes was that of a detective trying to solve a mystery. And Shinichi was that mystery. The question was, what was he going to do about this...? Act dumb and cute and childish to throw him off, or enjoy the perks while they lasted and let things run their course...?

"This is one of the first Japanese prints of the book," whispered Conan eagerly.

"It... is," confirmed Saguru curiously, noting the fact that Conan knew this.

Saguru hadn't figured it out. He knew Conan wasn't what he pretended to be, he simply couldn't explain what it all meant. He had his suspicion, but it seemed outlandish and he had no concrete proof. Yet, strangely, he had come to accept it. Conan was his equal intellectually, perhaps even his superior if he would stop holding back. He was pretending to be an innocent child and by now, the childish act actually freaked Saguru out a bit, because he knew Conan to be so much more. Even if he didn't know what exactly that entailed. Alas, he supposed, now he would never get his answers. About a year had passed since he had gotten to know and befriended Conan. He had started to notice Conan on the KID heists and that way, they grew closer. He began volunteering as a babysitter, for which Ran was very grateful. Often, the other Detective Boys would tag along – and though Saguru was also suspicious of Haibara Ai, the others were sweet and normal children. Saguru kind of liked them. He wondered if he would still see them, now that Conan had left. Returned 'home', he had said, when biding his goodbye to Saguru.

Watson cawed and took off from Saguru's shoulder. Mh, rare. Frowning, Saguru turned to follow his bird with his eyes. The two had been outside, in the front yard of the Hakuba mansion. Watson flew over the gate and, unwillingly, Saguru got up to walk over and see what had the hawk so excited. When he opened the gate, he stared in surprise. Kudou Shinichi, the Heisei Holmes who had disappeared two years ago, stood there, in front of the gate, with Watson sitting on his shoulder and nuzzling into his neck, bumping his head against Kudou's cheek in a manner he never did with strangers. Only with Saguru, his family and... Conan. The hawk had grown nearly as fond of the boy as Saguru had. Kudou laughed softly, caressing Watson's head.

"Yes, I missed you too, Watson-kun," whispered Kudou affectionately.

Missed? How could... Hakuba's eyes widened as the pieces slowly fell together in his mind.

"Kudou Shinichi. It's a... pleasure to finally meet you in person," Saguru held his hand out.

"You must be wondering what I'm doing here, out of the blue, since we have never met each other before," Kudou accepted his hand and shook it. "Go out to dinner with me and I'll explain."

"Dinner?" Saguru echoed slowly, blinking. "That is... unexpected. And it..."

"Sounds like a date? Because it is. Would be. If you'd accept," a blush dusted Shinichi's cheeks in a very appealing manner. "Which must sound even more confusing for you, but I promise, if you agree and hear me out, I will explain it to you and it might make sense to you. Because I know you and I want... you to know me too, the real me, not..."

"Not Conan-kun?" Saguru finished for him, surprising Shinichi. "Why don't you come inside."

"H... How...?" Shinichi looked surprised as he followed Saguru inside. "I know you suspected something for months, but you have never even met me, as Shinichi, before. How could you..."

Saguru offered the other detective a smirk, the 'I figured it out and will share that with you now' smirk. "The fact that Conan-kun's only real link seemed to be Kudou Shinichi meant that you must be somehow involved in whatever secret Conan was hiding. Then Conan left and only days later, Kudou returns after an absence of two years... the same amount of time that Conan has been here. I suspected but couldn't be sure until just now. You said you missed Watson, though you never met him. He seems familiar with you in a manner he is only with few."

"You... don't seem freaked out," noted Shinichi, narrowing his eyes.

"One of my closest friends is an actual witch, who has correspondence with Lucifer, the demon, in hell. She performs magic spells. It's not too outrageous to imagine some kind of magic that deaged you," replied Saguru with a smile, his eyes slowly trailing over Shinichi's body.

"...Magic? You're... I... you are saying magic is real? Actual magic? You, the most rational person I know, believe in actual magic? I am..." Shinichi blinked, repeatedly, looking lost.

"Mh. Not magic then. Now I am truly curious. And yes, that was essentially the reaction I had when I learned about it too. But your tolerance for the impossible grows when one of your other close friends is Kaitou KID, who in his very existence defies all logic and laws of physics."

"I came here to answer your questions. But now I have many questions of my own..."

"Good. Then it'll at least not be a one-sided conversation over dinner," Saguru smirked pleased.

He had a date, with the most brilliant mind he had ever met, now in a very appealing body.

~*~ The End ~*~

Author's note: Still on my DCMK rewatch and The Gathered Detective will never not make me salty because SAGURU IS RIGHT THERE and he doesn't even get a single actual CONVERSATION with Shinichi! Let! Your! Holmes! Geek! Teen! Detectives! Meet! Canon-wise those two should be best friends. Makes me mad that Sagu-chan is only in two (2) DC episodes and him and Shinichi don't even get to be friends. At which point I noticed that I've never actually written SaguShin before, only in an OT3 with Kaito, so that needed to be fixed. Behold! My first SaguShin, definitely not my last! ;D

Next week's Magic Monday will be KaiShin, where Kaito finds a treasure box that Conan is trying to hide. Whatever could be in it~
