Conan's Well-Hidden Secret
"Yo, Ran. How have you been?" Kaito offered his best Shinichi-grin and hoped not to get hit.
Mouri Ran was very emotional when it came to her best friend. Kaito understood it, since Shinichi had just vanished over a year ago to go solve some vague, big case and now only occasionally popped back in. Most of the time, that was Kaito pretending to be Shinichi, which meant that Kaito was usually on the receiving end of whatever emotional reaction she had.
"W... What are you doing here, Shinichi?" asked Ran with wide eyes before hugging him.
"I'm... here to pick up Conan-kun. I'm here on an overlay and his parents asked me to pick him up for a little family vacation while I'm here, so he doesn't have to fly alone," replied Kaito-as-Shinichi. "I'm sorry I can't stay long. I really am just here to pick him up, please don't be mad."
"Wait, what...?" Ran blinked confused, looking at him.
"There should be a letter from them in your pile of mail," suggested Kaito-as-Shinichi.
He had already secretly slipped it in there, so Ran would be able to find it and think she had overlooked it. Opening it, she read through it, looking surprised as she nodded.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Conan-kun isn't here right now... He's with the professor. I'll call him and tell him to come over, okay? I'll be with you again right away," Ran rushed over to the phone.
"Don't worry about it," called Kaito cheerfully. "I'll go and pack some things for him already."
"Yes, that's a good idea! There is a backpack in his closet," called Ran while picking up the phone.
Kaito nodded to himself and eagerly entered his tantei-kun's bedroom. Heh. Didn't look very childish. Some manga on the shelves, but other than that, pretty bare and more grown-up, especially the Sherlock Holmes books. He grinned as he traced the spines of some of them, before moving on to the closet and getting the backpack out. He started packing clothes, enough for a few days. Though then he paused, because something in the farthest corner of the closet caught his eye. He took it out and turned it over a few times. Ah. A trick box. The kind him and tantei-kun had dealt with before. How curious. The thief's curiosity was piqued. He shouldn't. Whatever was in there, tantei-kun was hiding it in a hard to open trick box for a reason. Then again, considering his tantei-kun's secret life, he might just be hiding his gadgets in there so the Mouris wouldn't find them and in that case, it was important that Kaito got into this box and would pack those gadgets.
He was a thief, surely his tantei-kun wouldn't dangle a shiny, shiny trick box in front of his favorite trickster and not expect Kaito to open it. Right? With curious glee did he start working on the mechanism that would open it. It actually took him longer than expected.
When the box opened, there was a moment of confusion for Kaito. A... jewelry box? His tantei-kun owned jewelry? With furrowed brows did Kaito pick up the brooch that first caught his eyes and took a closer look. As he held it between his fingers, his eyes widened. That wasn't just jewelry. That was the Black Star. More specifically, the Black Star replica brooch that Sonoko's mother had handed out on the... on the ship. The very first heist that Kaito and Conan had faced off. A fond smile spread over his lips as he turned the brooch over a few times, remembering that night. Or rather, those nights. Their first meeting on the skyscraper when the cheeky brat had set off a firework to alert the police of his presence and then the second night, on the cruise ship.
With gentle fingers did he put the brooch back into the box. The smile slipped off his face when he noticed a different object in the box. His mouth hung open as his eyebrows scrunched together. H... How...? His fingers were even a little shaky as he picked the object up.
"What are you doing going through my stuff, stupid thief?!"
He had never heard Conan's voice this angry and upset before as the shrunken teen threw himself at Kaito, tearing the box out of the thief's hands. But Kaito was still holding this one particular object.
"See, I was feeling guilty about that, but now I feel like gloating that my precious, law-abiding tantei-kun is actually a little thief himself," noted Kaito. "Because this is not your stuff, it is mine."
Kaito rather pointedly lifted the monocle up to hold it over his right eye, where he would usually be wearing it if he were in his KID get-up. Now that he was actually looking at Conan, he noticed that the detective's cheeks were dark red, redder than he had ever seen them. Huh, his tantei-kun seemed much more upset and embarrassed about this than expected.
"...Tantei-kun," Kaito's voice dropped to a whisper, the teasing gone. "Where did you get this? What is this? Some kind of... evidence box? Everything you need to lock me away?"
"Don't be stupid," Shinichi huffed, gently putting the box down. "What kind of evidence would the Black Star be? It's been months, there is no... DNA or fingerprints of yours on my brooch."
"Where did you get this, tantei-kun?" asked Kaito more pointedly, waving the monocle.
The shrunken detective avoided looking at him, instead his focus was on the box. "Do you remember the Imperial Easter Egg heist? With the... sniper. I found this, together with your dove."
"Ah, I sometimes feel like Tama-chan misses you," stated Kaito playfully at that.
"Don't joke," Shinichi's voice dropped to a dark hiss. "I thought you were dead."
The expression on Kaito's face froze at that. The words and even more so the emotions in tantei-kun's voice. He sounded devastated. Empty. Kaito had never considered that. They'd barely known each other during the Imperial Easter Egg heist; second heist, fourth time meeting. Finding Tama-chan and the monocle might have genuinely frightened Conan, made him think Kaito had actually died. Much less that his death would scare his tantei-kun this much. Kaito reached out to put the monocle back into the box and then he wrapped his arms around the shrunken teen, pulling him into a tight bear-hug, resting his chin on top of Conan's head and stroking his back gently.
"I'm sorry I scared you, Shinichi," whispered Kaito honestly.
"It's not like I was really worried, stupid thief," Conan's voice was muffled by Kaito's chest.
"You're so tsundere, tantei-kun," teased Kaito with a crooked grin. "You could just admit that you lo—ove me, of course you do! You keep helping me out! You worry about me! You like me."
Oh. The way Conan's entire face flushed again and he averted his eyes. Kaito had only meant to be teasing here. He swallowed hard before pulling the shrunken teen into another hug.
"I like you too, tantei-kun," assured Kaito. "And as soon as you get your big boy body back, I'll take you out on a totally dazzling date. For now, I... need your help. Someone's framing me."
"Right. There must be a reason why you're here, with my face," grunted Shinichi. "At least you're not kidnapping me in a dark alley while being a creep this time. Come on then, let's go."
Kaito grinned cheerfully and leaned in to kiss Conan's cheek, making the detective blush again. They had a lot ahead of them, but first things first. The fun parts still had time.
~*~ The End ~*~
Author's note: Recently rewatched the Fist of Blue Sapphire movie and Kaito stealing himself a tantei-kun still delights me. A lot. But I figured "what if that, but... coming and actually asking for help?". Also, I'm the kind of person who likes to keep memorabilia and I thought that it would be sweet if Shinichi did too, especially the monocle he found with KID's dove back during movie 3
Next Monday, there'll be a SaguKaiShin with a little twist; where Shinichi and Saguru have known each other for years ;)
