Something Resembling Lemonade
There was the sound of a long beep in the room and the doctors declared the time of death. Jack was in the room, doctors and nurses were around him. Rebecca was not there, she was in the hallway buying food from the vending machine. It was better this way, Jack did not want her to see him like this. It was over and what they say is true, in barely a second, he had seen his whole life again. And he could tell that in the end, it had been beautiful. Even if at first it had started badly because of his father, Jack had managed to follow his own path and in the end he had been happy.
Meeting Rebecca was the best thing that had happened to him. He had fallen in love with her from the first second. For him it was obvious, he had found his soulmate. As if it had been written, he could see what their life would be like, their marriage, their children, their home.
They had had their share of surprises, starting with the announcement of the triplets. They knew having one child would change their lives, but three children were more than a change, it was scary. But Jack knew they would pull through. They had had their share of misfortune with the worst that had happened to them, the loss of one of their children. And they had found happiness again when Randall came into their lives. It had not been easy, but Jack was proud of what he had accomplished.
As he felt himself passing away, the first regret that crossed his mind was that he could not surprise his family with what he had planned. Tickets for Bruce Springsteen's concert. He had told Kate that he would take her to one of his concerts one day and it hurt him that he could not keep a promise he had made to one of his children.
He had other regrets. He will not see Kevin, Kate and Randall grow up, he will not see them graduate, he will not attend their wedding, he will not know their children, he will not grow old with Rebecca. His last thought was for his wife. Even if she did not know it, she was the stronger of the two of them. She was going to be fine. Even if everything seemed impossible, Rebecca will be fine and their children will be fine. The relationship between Kevin and Randall will get better, Kate will become the beautiful young woman he knew she would be and Rebecca will find happiness again.
Jack could rest in peace. He had taken the sourest lemon that life has to offer and he had turned it into something resembling lemonade.
