Unexpected Childhood Sweethearts

How Saguru Managed to Surprise Kaito

"Hakuba-kun is in a surprisingly good mood today," commented Aoko.

Kaito hummed in agreement, his eyes on his boyfriend. Saguru seemed to be smiling a lot today. Had something happened? Kaito didn't remember today being anything special – any birthday or anniversary or release of a new book Saguru was looking forward to. Or that Saguru had solved any big case yesterday. But something that wasn't Kaito was putting Kaito's boyfriend in a very good mood – and Kaito, being who he was, really needed to know.

"Ah, yes. I received exciting news this morning," the smile on Saguru's lips made Kaito really want to kiss his boyfriend. "My childhood best friend is coming. I haven't seen him in years."

"You have a childhood best friend?" asked Kaito surprised. "You have your own Aoko?"

Saguru regarded Kaito for a moment and then, his smile seemed to turn mischievous. "I'd say more that I have my own Kaito. Never mind, I'm sorry."

Huh, strange remark. Wait. Did that mean Saguru's childhood friend was a boy? Somehow, that made Kaito even more jealous, especially with that remark of this person being his Kaito. Kaito was Saguru's Kaito! His eyebrows drew down as he watched his boyfriend more closely.

"Why haven't you seen him in years?" asked Aoko curiously.

"Ah, you see..." Saguru turned more toward her, eagerness in his voice. "Our mothers have been working together for years. I frequently met him on the set-"

"Set?" echoed Kaito confused.

At that, Saguru blinked equally confused, prompting Aoko to speak up. "Hakuba-kun never talks about his mother. Kaito and Aoko kind of... assumed... that..."

Silence befell them and it didn't take a genius detective to conclude what Aoko was implying here. Both Aoko and Kaito had lost one parent each. They only knew Saguru's father and the blonde detective never talked about his mother, so they had assumed he too had lost a parent.

"Oh. No, I'm sorry. My parents are simply divorced," Saguru looked sheepish. "And I... don't think I talk much about my family, in general. Not my father either."

That was... actually true. Aoko and Kaito had both met Saguru's father during heists before, that was how they knew the man was alive, what he looked like and what he did for a living. None of these had been provided by Saguru and he didn't exactly talk about his family life casually.

"So, your mom is, what? An actress?" asked Kaito, eager to learn more about his boyfriend.

"Yes. Helena Foley," replied Saguru with a nod.

"H... Helena Foley?" asked Kaito and Aoko in unison.

She had stared in their favorite show when they had been kids. Saguru nodded again, this time more uncomfortable. And oh. So that was why he never talked about his parents. Because as a detective, his father's name opened doors and he usually didn't want that, he wanted to open those doors himself. And his mother's name – she was a world-famous actress. While Kaito said his father's name with pride and cherished the recognition, because it was a reminder of his father, he could also see that having a famous parent could be uncomfortable.

"I used to live with my mother, travel for her gigs," continued Saguru. "I... didn't make a lot of friends. But one... I met him during the filming of a movie in the US. Months, we both lived on the set. We became friends. And so did our mothers. They met up frequently, even worked with each other repeatdly, and each time, I got to see him again. He had... He had left for Japan first. But by the time I came back, he had left again. And we... haven't seen each other in years. He's coming back, tomorrow, and he asked to meet up. I'm... I'm very excited to see him again."

"...That's nice," said Kaito genuinely, smiling a little. "I'm happy for you."

"Good. Will you come with me then?" asked Saguru, reaching for Kaito's hand.

"W... What?" Kaito's eyes widened in surprise.

Saguru shrugged a little. "All the friends I have made since moving here were your friends first. So I never got to... introduce you to anyone before. Let me introduce you to my best friend."

There even was a blush on Saguru's cheeks. How cute. This was probably the most romantic thing Saguru had ever said. Kaito pulled him into a brief kiss out of excitement. The fact that Saguru let it happen – the blonde was not a fan of public displays of affection – was a tell-tale.

"I would absolutely love that!" exclaimed Kaito. "I can't wait to meet him."

Kaito was eager as the couple entered the coffee shop. He wondered what kind of childhood friend Saguru would have. Probably some adorable geek with whom Saguru had squealed about Holmes and other such nerdy things. Kaito could just picture it, an adorable tiny Saguru nerding out with someone as nerdy as him. At this point, Kaito really couldn't wait to meet Saguru's best friend.

"Saguru! It's so good to see you again, it's been far too long!"

"You're right, Shin. I had hoped to get to spend more time with you when I moved back here, but I had to learn from your parents that you left the country unexpectedly for a case ..."

Kaito stood frozen to the spot, staring with wide eyes at the two cute Holmes geeks hugging. Kudou Shinichi. His tantei-kun, but fully grown, in his full, gorgeous body again. Which – that was what Saguru had meant by having 'his own Kaito', because the two looked physically so similar. Oh, really. Kaito continued watching, the way Saguru and Shinichi hugged tightly, how tantei-kun smiled so brightly at Kaito's boyfriend, holding him close. This was just right out of one of Kaito's dirty little fantasies, the very secret ones, where Kaito got to capture two detectives for himself. If Saguru and Shinichi next started kissing and undressing each other, Kaito knew it was a dream...

"I brought someone, I hope you don't mind. But I... I really wanted you to meet my boyfriend."

"You... You have a..." Shinichi sounded surprised. "I didn't know that."

Saguru flushed. "We haven't talked as much as I'd like to in the past two years, mh?"

"I... I suppose you're right," admitted Shinichi, looking guilty.

"Shin, this is my boyfriend, Kuroba Kaito. Kaito, this is my childhood best friend, Kudou Shinichi."

With a bright smile did Kaito come back into action now that he had Shinichi's full attention. Oh, that felt good. Having tantei-kun's attention again. The chibi version had left months ago, to 'finish some business', with no date given for his return. But here he was, all tall and handsome and looking at Kaito. With a deep bow did Kaito take Shinichi's hand and kiss it. After, he magically produced a rose, offering it to Shinichi. The detective flushed a pretty pink as he accepted the white rose with wide eyes. All too soon did those eyes turn skeptical, analyzing Kaito's every move.

"I've read so much about you in the newspapers. Not that Sagu-chan here told me a whole lot about you, but it is such a pleasure to meet you, great detective," offered Kaito playfully.

The way Shinichi's eyes widened when Kaito called him that. Of course that was intentional. There was no way Shinichi wasn't going to figure it out. Why insult the detective's intelligence by playing pretend? Not that he was going to admit out loud in words that he was KID, of course.

"Let's sit down and order," offered Saguru with a smile, pointing at the table.

Saguru smiled smugly as he walked back home with Kaito that evening. His magician was pouting.

"You could have mentioned that that actress friend of your mom's is Kudou Yukiko. You could have mentioned that your childhood sweetheart is Kudou Shinichi," hissed Kaito.

"Why would I?" Saguru frowned innocently. "Because you have been mooning over him for months now? As your boyfriend, I disapprove of that. So I thought payback was only fair, especially since you still haven't told me how exactly you know Shin."

"You call him Shin!" Kaito whined and threw his hands in the air. "This is unfair."

Saguru's smile softened as he wrapped an arm around his boyfriend's shoulders, pulling him closer. "Consider this: You could grow close enough to Shin to get to call him that too."

"I could?" Kaito perked up a little. "Wait. Is this why you were never jealous? I honestly thought you were just not taking me and my crush seriously at all."

"That too," admitted Saguru. "But also... Yes. Shinichi is my... first love. And I might have never fallen out of love with him. I was surprised the first time you started fawning over him. But..."

"You're on board with my plan to seduce Kudou Shinichi?" Kaito gasped excitedly. "Oh!"

"Seduce, huh? You being you, I expected you to say 'steal' Kudou Shinichi."

"You know me so well, Sagu-chan," Kaito grinned and kissed Saguru's cheek.

Shinichi's first stop had been Ran. His first text had been to Saguru, which had made his heart race. During the Gathering of the Detectives, he had seen Saguru for the first time in years. The blonde had turned out really handsome and it had infuriated Shinichi that he couldn't talk to his long-time friend. When he actually got his body back, he wanted to rekindle the friendship he had formed with Saguru back when he had been a small boy, accompanying his mom to movie shoots. It had been strangely disappointing that Saguru had brought his boyfriend – that he had a boyfriend. But then said boyfriend had smiled mischievously at Shinichi, produced a white rose very much the same manner as KID always did and called him 'great detective'. Saguru was dating Kaitou KID.

That seemed too good to be true, because during the two years as Conan, Shinichi had fallen head over heels for the white-clad thief. Knowing nothing would ever come forth from it, because he couldn't date a man whose name he didn't even know. Now, he knew KID's name. And he didn't know what to do with it. There was nothing he could do. He had no proof, after all.

What was far more troubling was the way KID behaved around him. Shinichi felt... courted.

"Is your boyfriend like this with everyone?" asked Shinichi with a frown.

"Well, he is a natural flirt," admitted Saguru, lifting his cup of tea up. "Charm of a magician. Seduce the audience, make them swoon, so they don't pay much attention to how the trick works."

"Mh. Something tells me that doesn't work on you, Sagu," Shinichi smirked.

"Sometimes it does," admitted Saguru with a faint blush. "He... can be very charming, if he wants to be. And sometimes, it's... actually nice to let the trick unfold without analyzing it."

Shinichi hummed softly in agreement. That was how he felt about KID too. Both, the being charming and the way it was fun to marvel at a good trick sometimes. Yes, his mind was always working, trying to figure things out, but KID's magic – it was mesmerizing.

"Will you tell me where you were, during those two years?" asked Saguru.

"I... It's better if you don't know," Shinichi sighed. "I was deep undercover. The case was... not pretty. I'm trying to move on from it. I'm... I just want my life back, you know."

Saguru's eyes were worried as he reached over the table to take Shinichi's hand in a comforting manner. It made Shinichi blush. Over the past weeks, he'd spent so much time with the couple. Trying to get back in touch with Saguru but then also befriending KID. Kaito. He hadn't brought it up yet, because he didn't even know how – and so far, Saguru had always been with them.

"If you'd excuse me for a moment," sighed Saguru as he looked at his phone.

"A case?" guessed Shinichi, knowing this had only been a matter of time, really.

Ten minutes ago, Kaito had been cornered by a group of children, asking for tricks. Since then, he had been performing for an enthralled audience. It was cute to see KID like this. Shinichi turned toward Saguru to bid his goodbye, just to be surprised by Saguru kissing his cheek gently.

"We'll continue this later, Shin," promised Saguru in a soft voice.

Shinichi was flustered as he watched the other detective leave. The two were more physical than Shinichi was with most other friends, because they had been close for so long. But this was new.

"Where did my Sagu-chan go?" asked Kaito confused when he sat down again.

"A case called for his attention," Shinichi's gaze sharpened and the flustered distraction faded as he finally had KID where he wanted him; all alone with Shinichi. "So we can finally speak freely."

"Freely? Why would we do that?" Kaito feigned confusion now.

"Please, KID-san, you didn't call me 'great detective' by accident," chided Shinichi as he took a sip from his coffee. "Very bold of you to date a detective. Even I wouldn't have expected that."

"Why, great detective," Kaito offered him the trademark KID smile and a shudder went down Shinichi's spine. "If I had my way, I'd be dating two detectives. We're working our way up to that."

He actually winked at Shinichi and this felt more honest than his usual flirting. Shinichi swallowed and suddenly regretted talking to Kaito all on his own. He needed Saguru for distance.

"Don't joke about those things," warned Shinichi seriously. "And don't... Don't hurt Sagu."

"I can genuinely promise you I will never do that intentionally," Kaito looked dead-serious. "I love him. I really do. I didn't... mean to fall in love with one of my detectives, but then... I seem to have a weakness for brilliant minds that challenge and chase me."

Kaito smirked again, winking at Shinichi. "Stop flirting with me while your boyfriend isn't here. He's one of my best friends. I won't stand for whatever this is, KID-san."

"Stop calling me that," chided Kaito. "Call me Kaito. Or Kai-chan, if you want to. And I assure you, I would also never cheat on Sagu-chan. That falls under 'hurting intentionally'. I won't."

"Then what is... this?" Shinichi frowned, motioning between the two of them.

"Mh? Oh. That's just me, trying to... steal... your heart. For me and Sagu-chan."

Shinichi sputtered and was ready to argue with the thief, but that was when Saguru returned and sat back down between the two of them. He rested a casual hand on Shinichi's shoulder as he sat down, reached out for Kaito with his other hand. It did things to Shinichi when Saguru touched him.

"What were you talking about while I was outside?" Saguru smiled.

"Your boyfriend was making me dirty proposals, Sagu," complained Shinichi with a glare.

Saguru glared at the thief. "We agreed not to do that. You agreed to wait for me to be there too."

Kaito grinned broadly and leaned in to kiss his boyfriend. "Couldn't resist. He was being cute."

Shinichi's eyes widened as he looked between the couple, just to be faced with two intense sets of eyes. Oh. So that was what it was? Really? Shinichi held their gaze. Okay. He was game for that.

~*~ The End ~*~

Author's note: I've played with the premise of "what if Shinichi and Kaito were childhood best friends because Yukiko learned from Toichi?" before and then I looked at Saguru and. We know jackshit about his mother, at all. He seems to be rich, but I somehow don't really think that a police chief is the kind of job that makes you rich, so I started spinning - what if it's Saguru's mother who is rich, what if she's an actress, what if she worked with Yukiko in the past. What if Shinichi and Saguru knew each other as smol adorable children tagging along to their moms' sets. And here we are! ;D

Next Monday, a KaiShin where Shinichi gets to meet Kaito's civil identity during one of Kaito's magic shows, so stay tuned for that!
