Magic Kaito's Magic Show

Shinichi's Day Out With the Detective Boys

"Shinichi-kun," Agasa interrupted himself with violent coughing. "I have a favor to ask of you."

That didn't bode well. Furrowing his brows, Shinichi adjusted the phone to rest it between his ear and his shoulder before continuing on his way to the kitchen, making a small noise of confirmation to make the professor keep going. Before he continued, Agasa coughed some more.

"An old friend of mine has given me tickets for a magic show, to attend with the children," Agasa made a raspy breathy sound. "I am... not feeling too good, but the show is tonight. And I of course already told the children, they are so excited for it. I would hate to let them down, but I truly don't feel up to it today. I'd ask Mouri-chan, but she is busy today..."

With a look at the calendar, Shinichi nodded to himself. Today was date-night, Ran and Sera had plans for today. Sera had been talking about it all day yesterday at work, what she had planned.

"You want me to take the Detective Boys to this... magic show?" summarized Shinichi.

"Yes. I can't let them go unsupervised, but they are so excited for it," Agasa coughed once more.

A sigh escaped Shinichi's lips. "Very well. I assume you told them to meet at your place. Tell me what time I should be there and where this magic show is and I will take them."

"Thank you, Shinichi-kun, that's a great relief for me. So I can rest without guilt."

It wasn't like Shinichi minded. Not really. Sure, when he had still been Conan, he had complained a lot, had even been annoyed by the children at many instances. Now that he was back to his body, he... missed them. Mostly, it was annoying to be treated like a little child, but there had been something so pure and kind about them, they had always made him feel welcomed. They had become precious friends to him and now, they didn't even know him. And it hurt. Similarly to how much it had hurt him that Ran and Sonoko hadn't known him as Conan. Just like he had with them, he now wanted to establish a new relationship with the Detective Boys. Even if he was no longer Conan, their cherished friend, he would like to be a big brother figure in their lives. He wanted to give them a chance. Yes, the professor indulged them, but adults always underestimated them. Shinichi had underestimated them often too, but they were quite clever and determined. If becoming detectives was truly what they wanted, then he wanted to be a mentor to them and help them achieve that goal, with less obstacles than he himself had to face back then.

"Thank you for taking us, Shinichi-nii-san," chirped Mitsuhiko with a smile.

Shinichi returned the smile as he walked in the middle, the two boys on one side of him and the two girls on the other. Haibara kept staring at him with her usual intense gaze boring a hole into his head. She knew he had struggled with finding his place again after he turned back to his old body.

"Do you like magic too, Shinichi-nii-san?" asked Ayumi eagerly.

"Yes," replied Haibara before Shinichi had the chance, a smug smirk on her lips. "He loves magic. He never misses a performance from his favorite magician. Right... Shinichi-nii-san?"

Urgh, creepy. He glared at her pointedly, knowing exactly whom she was talking about. His cheeks flushed a little when he thought about the white-clad thief. He missed attending heists. But he'd only been back to being Shinichi for two months and a lot needed taking care of – getting everything legally sorted, papers faked. He was no longer a seventeen years old high schooler, he was a nineteen years old adult. Life had moved on and he was trying to catch up with it. Then he had decided to open a detective agency with Sera, something that was also quite time-consuming.

"The professor said we can meet the magician after the show," stated Genta. "I hope he's good."

Shinichi quirked his lips at that. "That, I hope too. C'mon, let's get snacks before we find our places, mh? Popcorn is on me, how does that sound?"

The kids cheered and Haibara rolled her eyes at him. Obvious bribery. But he knew it would work. So far, Shinichi was just that friend of Ran and Sonoko's. He had run into the Detective Boys on a couple of cases, but they just... weren't close to him. This was a good chance for him to become someone they would like and come to too. He definitely had won Genta's heart when they headed toward their seats. He arranged the kids to sit between himself and Haibara, just to make sure none of them could sneak off unnoticed. The last thing he wanted to do was lose a child the first time he went somewhere with them all alone. Sighing, Shinichi relaxed, stretching his legs out and settling for an uneventful hour. A magician. Shinichi's standard was far too high for some magician to live up to it. No, Kaitou KID had completely spoiled him when it came to magic.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight's show! I am your host for the night, Magic Kaito."

A peculiar name; the "Magic" being in English. Shinichi tilted his head though. The way the magician had appeared in a puff of pink smoke. Shinichi straightened up and abandoned his bored, relaxed pose. A dark-blue suit, hugging the magician's frame very nicely. Shinichi's age and height, messy hair, darker than his. The face... Shinichi narrowed his eyes. No. Couldn't, right? Too much of a coincidence. Tensely, Shinichi dedicated his whole attention to the magician on stage.

"You said we get to meet the magician after?" whispered Shinichi toward the children.

"Yes! The professor's friend gave us backstage passes!" Mitsuhiko's voice was excited.

Mh. Very interesting. The magician smiled and in a flourished motion, made beautiful white doves appear that flew up toward the ceiling. Not all of them though. One headed over to land on Shinichi's lap. Smiling amused, Shinichi reached out to gently caress her head.

"Been a while, Tama-chan," whispered Shinichi fondly, petting the dove.

Kaito had finally made a name for himself. Sure, he was world-famous as Kaitou KID, but that had been his father's name, his father had made that legacy. After graduation, Kaito started putting on shows and he was a success. He became a sweetheart in Tokyo and beyond. His stage name was Magic Kaito, because he didn't want to build his career on the legacy of the Kuroba name. He wanted to be admired, not the son of Kuroba Toichi. The shows were fun. He loved his job, even if it wasn't as exciting as his night-job. Tonight had, once again, been a full success. Still buzzing with the excitement of a successful show, he sat in his dressing room and waited for his special guests; Jii had requested five tickets with VIP passes for 'a friend'. Since Kaito rarely had the opportunity to do Jii a favor, he gladly agreed. Though his eyes kept wandering to the clock, because he was exhausted from last night's heist. Even with the lack of tantei-kun, a late-night heist followed with a show the next day were draining. Kaito's good mood dropped a little at the thought of his tantei-kun, who had just up and disappeared two months ago. He'd said goodbye, on the last heist before that. Had said that Kaito would never see Edogawa Conan again.

The phrasing was what had gotten to him and, two weeks later, he read in the newspapers about the return of Kudou Shinichi and the celebration of a big criminal organization being taken out with Kudou's help. Kaito's entire body had vibrated with anticipation at that – he would get to face off against the Heisei Holmes, fully grown and with all the access of an adult and without the restraints of being a child. A real battle. He'd gone all out on the next heist, but... no Shinichi. Not at all, yet.

"You were amazing, Kaito-san!" a small, excited voice exclaimed loudly.

With a bright smile did Kaito turn around to face his fans. Children, how ni... He froze as he looked at the children. The Detective Boys, sans tantei-kun. Blinking owlishly, Kaito's eyes wandered over them one by one and then got stuck on long legs, wandering up those legs until he was staring into a face he had impersonated on multiple occasions himself. Kudou Shinichi. Their eyes met and the look in those cerulean-blue orbs was foreboding. That smirk, that 'I figured you out, KID-san' smirk that Kaito had seen so many times on the shrunken detective, was currently aimed at him. He wanted to think that it didn't mean anything, but he knew tantei-kun too good to underestimate him.

"Thank you, I am always happy to meet my fans," Kaito took a bow.

He produced a rose for Ayumi, making the little girl gasp in excitement. Though when he straightened up again, he suddenly had a bouquet of white roses held out for him. By tantei-kun. The detective smiled charmingly at him as he offered the flowers and Kaito's heart skipped a beat.

"Consider me a fan, then," offered Shinichi. "Your performance was... outstanding."

Kaito wanted to say words, but for once in his life, his mouth didn't seem to be working. He knew he was blushing brightly as he accepted the white roses from the guy he was deeply, madly in love with. The smirk on Shinichi's lips was sharp and all-knowing. He knew. Instinctively, Kaito knew that tantei-kun knew. And it figured. Their faces looked so similar, Shinichi knew that KID's civil identity bore great resemblance to him. The magic acts themselves too, he guessed. Few paid as close attention to KID's magic tricks and how they worked and were executed as tantei-kun. Others were just floored by the magic itself, but Shinichi had broken down enough of them to recognize the craft behind it. Recognize the craftsman who had performed the trick. Cooing drew Kaito's attention to the dove sitting on Shinichi's shoulder, nestled against his neck and looking entirely too at home there. Ah. So Tama-chan had decided to betray him and his secret too. Unfaithful bird.

Kaito was interrupted and distracted by the children and spent the next half hour entertaining them and making them laugh, though his eyes kept drifting over to tantei-kun. When the time was up and the complaining kids were being herded out, Shinichi shook hands with Kaito – and slipped him a piece of paper. A business card for a detective agency. Kaito frowned curiously.

"Give me a call some time so we can meet without the children, or the police. KID-san."

"It's Kaito," corrected Kaito automatically. "Kuroba Kaito. And... And I will. Call you."

At the Blue Parrot, at about the same time, Jii Konosuke and Agasa Hiroshi were playing billiard and having a drink with each other, laughing to themselves as they thought about the boys.

"They would have never figured it out on their own. This was a brilliant idea, Hiroshi-kun."

"I just hope they'll work it out now," Agasa chuckled to himself.

Jii nodded solemnly, though he trusted the young master to be able to take it from here.

~*~ The End ~*~

Author's note: Professional magician Kaito means a lot to me. I want him to achieve all his dreams. I'm also still hung up by the MK implication that "a professor" was creating Kaito's gadgets and am now in love with the idea that Agasa and Jii know each other~
