Watson's Favorite Holmes

The Match-Making Hawk

Watson belonged at the side of Holmes. That was an unchangeable fact. So it was without any surprise to Hakuba Saguru that after meeting Kudou Shinichi, his pet-hawk Watson took to the Heisei Holmes. What was a surprise was the level to which Kudou took to Watson.

Saguru had met Kudou three months ago, during a KID heist. The blonde had been surprised to see Kudou at the heist. Over the past three years of KID being active, the Heisei Holmes had never shown interest in the thief before, yet nowadays he rarely ever missed a heist.

What had started as professional and polite small-talk, quickly deepened over the following weeks. The two shared a burning passion for Sherlock Holmes and it had been a great conversation starter. Once they started, neither of them could stop. One memorable heist, the two of them had stuck around afterward because they were talking about A Study in Scarlet and suddenly, the sun was rising over Tokyo. Just like that, they had spent hours talking to each other.

The two of them had become friends ever since Kudou's reappearance after a two year investigation deep undercover. The peculiar thing was that Kudou never spoke of that. Saguru had tried bringing it up a few times, but Shinichi would get that distant, sad look on his face and Saguru would drop it again. Whatever had happened, it had deeply traumatized Shinichi in some way and the Heisei Holmes clearly just wanted to move on from it. Saguru didn't want to be the one to drag him back down, he wanted to be part of what kept Shinichi going in the now.

It wasn't hard to grow fond of Kudou Shinichi. Never before had Saguru met such a brilliant mind. The very first time he had heard of the 'Heisei Holmes', he had taken personal offense to that; not just because he himself was a Holmes obsessed teen detective who would have liked that nickname, but also as a Holmes fan who thought that no one deserved that comparison. Now that Saguru had worked with Kudou not just during heists but also on various other cases, he could genuinely admit that Shinichi deserved that name. He deserved to be named in the same sentence as Holmes.

That brilliant mind was what had first piqued Saguru's interest and what had slowly made him fall for the Heisei Holmes, but what had ultimately sealed the deal was the way Shinichi was with Watson. Watson, his only friend for far too long, his cherished companion.

"Many people are scared of Watson," commented Saguru softly.

Shinichi turned blinking eyes on him. His attention had previously been on Watson. The hawk was sitting on Shinichi's shoulder, rubbing against the detective's face. Shinichi had his head turned to look at the hawk while gently caressing his feathers. Now, those beautiful cerulean eyes were staring at Saguru expectantly. He knew Saguru wasn't done talking yet. There was more.

"I understand that; he is, fundamentally, a bird of prey. A predator," Saguru continued. "Others are in awe of him and like to admire him from afar, but don't dare to get close either. Then there are some who... think of him like a toy, want to pet him and push him."

Shinichi hummed, to signal that he was still listening, though his attention turned back onto the hawk, tracing his head. "You're... patient with him. You let him come to you and when he does, you are... kind and gentle with him. I appreciate that a lot. I appreciate you a lot."

Despite wanting to compose himself, Saguru felt his cheeks heat up. He averted his face, not ready to look at the beautiful brunette. Lately, Saguru had been quite easily distracted by Shinichi's presence. His mind, that Saguru was used to. But nowadays, when he looked at Shinichi he seemed unable to look away. He noticed little things, like the different shades of sky-blue in Shinichi's eyes, the pink of his lips, just how adorable that little cowlick was and how much he wanted to run his fingers through the brown hair. Other things that Saguru had noticed before, but in a professional and neutral observation, now had different meanings. Like Shinichi's legs; long, lean, muscular from doing soccer for most of his life, good for running after a fleeing thief. Now, Saguru marveled at the play of muscles and he wondered how firm they were, wanted to touch them. Wondered what they would look like wrapped around his waist. Saguru flushed at that train of thoughts.

"You know that I appreciate you too, Hakuba-kun," Shinichi smiled, though he looked confused. "You usually... don't talk about your feelings that much. Is... everything alright?"

"I don't," admitted Saguru, smoothing out his tie. "But it seems... I have spoken to Nakamori-chan about this and she advised me that talking about it would be beneficial."

"Talking about... Watson-kun and me?" Shinichi furrowed his brows.

He gently ran a finger over Watson's beak, something that the hawk liked very much. Saguru melted a little as he watched the gentle caress. Shinichi was a fundamentally good person, on a factual level Saguru already knew that from everything else, but seeing him with Watson was a whole different level and it made Saguru's heart race. At first, he hadn't been able to figure it out. He genuinely thought he might have heart-problems, before talking about his concerns with Aoko, who had deduced the right cause more efficiently and faster than Saguru – she was yet to make a brilliant inspector herself one day. The heart-racing happened whenever Shinichi was around. He was the cause. Because Saguru had romantic feelings for the other detective.

"Talking about... my feelings for you," admitted Saguru, closing his eyes for a moment to gather himself. "I have never met a mind as brilliant as yours. Not just as a detective. You... I enjoy our conversations over Holmes so very much. I cherish every theory you share with me and how we can just sit and talk for hours. Our... movie nights, our shared Sherlock watches, they feel more like... dates to me, than hanging out with a friend. When I look at you, my heart races."

Shinichi's eyes widened surprised. "You... like me? For my personality?"

"Yes, very much so," Saguru furrowed his brows. "You're funny and snarky in a well-balanced combination. I enjoy our battles of wits and chasing KID with you."

"...Huh," Shinichi hummed softly to himself and tilted his head.

"I'm sorry if my advances are unwanted," Saguru shifted, growing nervous.

"No! I mean, I just..." Shinichi scratched his slowly flushing cheek. "I wasn't expecting that. Usually, people get bored with my lengthy rants about Holmes, or annoyed by me running off to solve a case or being late because of a case. I'm not..."

"The Holmes rants are a bonus," noted Saguru, arching one eyebrow. "And, I consider myself as bad as you when it comes to running late or being distracted by a case. I think that we compliment each other and enjoy the same things to a degree that would make us work in a relationship."

"That... is a very good deduction," Shinichi nodded and reached out for Saguru. "I like you too."

Saguru smiled as they kissed, Watson cawing softly in approval, still on Shinichi's shoulder.

Author's note: I LOVE Shinichi with animals. The show should give us more Shinichi interacting with animals. But I definitely love the idea of Watson, in particular, liking Shinichi, so this had to happen! ;D
