Shot From the Sky

When Shinichi Took a Thief Home

Kaito was dizzy when he woke up, feeling like throwing up. Why was he waking up...? It wasn't morning, was it? He remembered getting ready for a heist... His confusion only grew when he opened his eyes, because he had never seen this room before. He wasn't home, or at the Blue Parrot. So he didn't fall asleep because he had spent all of last night excitedly fretting about how he could dazzle tantei-kun. Ever since the Great Detective had regained his grown-up body, Kaito found himself even more invested in dazzling him, wanting to impress Shinichi.

But that wasn't it. He hadn't fallen asleep before the heist due to too much thinking about the Great Detective the night before. He was in a foreign place and his body ached all over. When he tried to sit up, a strong pain shot through his shoulder all over. His arm immediately gave out in pain and he collapsed back onto the bed he was laying on. With a pained groan did he turn to look at his shoulder. It was bandaged up, but there was red seeping through the bandage. Blood.

Shot. He'd been shot. His eyes widened as memories flooded back in. The heist, it had gone so well, he had been on the rooftop with Shinichi, bantering with his beloved detective, listening to the way Shinichi dissected the heist and the magic used in it. Kaito loved that so much. It was weird, because usually, it annoyed him when people tried to take his tricks apart. But he knew Shinichi didn't do it out of malice or tried to just destroy the magic – the most exciting thing for Shinichi was unraveling mysteries and when he shared his observations, there was such a pleased grin on his lips and his eyes would sparkle in excitement and Kaito would fall just a little more in love with him, because Shinichi showed passion about magic. Even if Shinichi might not put it that way, that was absolutely what he did. Understanding and explaining the magic excited Shinichi.

However, the loud noises of the police had interrupted their little date, so Kaito had bid his goodbye and jumped off the roof to take to the sky. And then he got shot. He remembered the pain of it, the way his suit soaked in red, the scream – not his. Scream coming from the rooftop. Shinichi's voice, sounding more terrified than Kaito had ever heard it before as he screamed KID's name. After that, blackness. He must have crashed, or passed out and then crashed.

Kaito took in a sharp breath as he tried to sit up once again. What if they had gotten him? He wasn't in a hospital, or a prison cell. They had shot him out of the sky and gotten him. Not killed him. They needed him to get information, maybe use him to get Pandora. His eyes widened and his heart started racing in fear at the thought of Shinichi. Shinichi had been there. What if they had gotten him too? Kaito knew he'd endure torture, he wouldn't help them if it cost his own life. But if they hurt Shinichi? If they threatened his detective? He would deliver them Pandora on a silver plate if that would save Shinichi's life. Because he'd lost one person he loved over this damned gem, he couldn't do that again. He couldn't even begin to imagine a life without his tantei-kun in it.

"Ah. I see you're finally awake," the voice came from the doorway, a shadowy figure stepping in.

The moonlight falling through the window hit him, illuminating him once he was fully in the room and Kaito took a deep, relieved breath before sagging back onto the bed fully. His detective was fine. There was a nasty scowl on his face, but he didn't look hurt, was walking freely.

"Wait, what... happened? Where are we?" asked Kaito confused. "This isn't the Kudou Manor."

"Let's put aside the fact that you think you know every room in my home," muttered Shinichi, his scowl deepening. "We're at Agasa-hakase's place. And what happened is that you got shot. You got shot and fell out of the sky. I called the professor on my way down from the rooftop. I got to you first. The sniper was on a building farther away. I dragged you away from the crash-site but left your hang-glider there so others would know that was where you got down. So people would think you walked away from it. I took you out of the way, hiding in the bushes until the professor arrived. I bandaged you up. When we got to the professor's, Haibara stitched you up again."

Kaito blinked surprised, staring at the detective who came closer and closer the more he spoke. Shinichi was all up in his face by the time he was done and he looked so angry. Only then did the words fully register and Kaito's eyes widened. He felt himself getting angry too.

"Why would you do something so reckless?!" Kaito sat up carefully, supporting himself with his left arm only. "You could have gotten shot too! What if they got there before you could drag me away, they could have taken you, could have hurt – killed – you!"

The look on Shinichi's was startled and then morphed into a mixture of exasperation and fury as he grabbed Kaito harshly and pinned him to the bed by his uninjured shoulder. Less than an inch was between their faces as the detective glared him down with murderous intend.

"Why. Why," repeated Shinichi, spitting the words out. "Are you... Are you seriously asking me why I saved your life, you selfish, reckless, stupid thief?"

"Selfish?" Kaito made an offended noise. "What in the world is selfish about not wanting you to get hurt because of me! You reckless detective! What if you'd gotten hurt because of me?!"

"You're selfish because it's so easy for you to throw your own life away like that! But what about me?" Shinichi's hand was still pressed against Kaito's chest and the thief was acutely aware of the presence, the heat of Shinichi's skin. "How dare you nearly die. How dare you suggest I should have just let you be taken, or killed, by those people to save my own skin. You can't leave me."

Oh. Kaito blinked more slowly, getting lost in Shinichi's soft blue eyes. They were so close, he could see them shimmer with unshed tears building up. That worry Kaito had felt earlier, when for a moment he'd thought he'd been taken and that they might have taken Shinichi too. That thought he had, that he would give Pandora to save Shinichi's life because he couldn't imagine living in a world without his Great Detective. That was what he could see in Shinichi's eyes right now.

"I'm sorry, tantei-kun," Kaito's voice dropped to a whisper. "I didn't mean to worry you."

"Then don't get shot," growled Shinichi frustrated, one tear pearling in the corner of his eye.

"I'm alright," whispered Kaito gently. "I'm fine. Look at me. Conscious, talking. Not dead."

And just like that, all tension and anger seemed to leave Shinichi's body and the detective collapsed against him, resting his forehead against Kaito's uninjured shoulder, leaning his weight against Kaito. For a moment, the thief was too startled to react, but then he wrapped his good arm around Shinichi, holding him, running his hand over the detective's back to sooth him.

"You can't..." Shinichi whispered, voice breaking. "You can't do that. You can't do that to me."

Part of Kaito wanted to tease his Great Detective, because it was so unusual for Shinichi to show such a vulnerable and soft side. But the bigger part of Kaito knew to bite his tongue because of those exact reasons. And all of Kaito simply felt warm and fuzzy and overwhelmed.

"I'm sorry, Great Detective," Kaito continued caressing Shinichi's back. "I'm fine. I'm safe."

It took a few moments for Shinichi to gather his bearings. With a shaky breath did the detective sit up and lean back. His cheeks flushed when he realized how close he had just been to KID, how intimate that moment they had just shared had been. How open he had just been with his feelings. Embarrassed did he rub his neck and avoid looking at Kaito. Which made Kaito consider another thing. He looked down himself, realizing he wasn't wearing his cape or shirt, obviously, because the scary little lady had stitched him back together. But... His hand went up to feel his face. He wasn't wearing his monocle or his top-hat. He was laying bare before his detective.

"Why are you looking so shocked? Did you think I'd put your top-hat and monocle back onto you after your crash and make sure they stay in place during surgery? I was busy saving your life."

Shinichi offered him a deadpan. Okay, he might have a point there. Still, what was Kaito supposed to do with all of that? One of the detectives chasing him now knew his face. It made him nervous, his heart racing as he tried not to ask the question. Will you arrest me now, Great Detective?

When Shinichi saw the look on his face – Kaito's poker-face completely broken down at this point – the detective huffed out something akin to a laugh, though he seemed not the least bit amused.

"Are you stupid?" asked Shinichi slowly, his voice serious. "I mean, I just called you a stupid thief, but as an idiom. Now I'm genuinely asking, are you actually stupid?"

"Excuse me?" Kaito sputtered a little, trying to sit up more to be on eye-level with Shinichi.

"You are stupid," Shinichi slowly pointed at him. "Very stupid. What, did you just forget every time you have carried me close to your chest when we were soaring through the sky? Do you truly think that a monocle covers enough of your face that I couldn't make it out all the times you carried me around? Did you also forget that time we slept next to each other for two nights in Singapore?"

Now, Kaito blinked slowly as he looked at Shinichi. That had... never occurred to him before.

"But you never... arrested me," argued Kaito softly, unsure where he was going with this.

"Because I've never arrested you," Shinichi narrowed his eyes. "Will you actually make me say it?"

"I don't know what 'it's is, actually, so I might need you to say it," admitted Kaito confused.

"I've never arrested you," whispered Shinichi, turning his head to look out the window at the full moon. "All these countless times that I could have arrested you. How many times have I cornered you on rooftops and announced my presence to you, instead of tranquilizing you on the spot? How often did I let you go, with flimsy excuses like 'you returned it', or 'you helped out this time'? I'm not going to arrest you, I've never arrested you before. I... never will."

"I don't... understand..." Kaito's brain was trying to process, but he came up blank.

"...I thought you were a genius, but I guess you are stupid," muttered Shinichi beneath his breath, his cheeks cherry-red as he turned to look at him again. "I'm in love with you, KID."

Kaito tilted his head, the words slowly sinking in. "...I am stupid..."

That earned him an honest laugh from Shinichi, the detective covering his face. His eyes were sparkling with joy and Kaito fell just a little more in love with him in that moment. Without thinking about it, or regarding his injury, Kaito reached out for Shinichi to pull him into a kiss. Only after did he wince and let his injured arm fall down. Shinichi was staring at him wide-eyed.

"You just... kissed me," whispered Shinichi, pressing shaking fingers against his lips.

"So I'm not the only stupid one here, mh?" Kaito grinned cheekily. "Every time that I linger on the rooftops and just... wait for you, when I could have run off long ago. Waiting for you so I can see you, talk to you. Every time I seek you out to hear your deductions. Every time I plan a heist, specifically for you, just to... just to make you smile and look at me like that..."

Every spoken word from Kaito intensified Shinichi's blush. With all the time in the world did Shinichi pull his legs onto the bed so he could lay down next to Kaito, carefully resting his head on the thief's chest. Smiling down at the detective, Kaito wrapped his good arm around his waist.

"My name is Kuroba Kaito," whispered Kaito. "Would you like to be my boyfriend?"

"Stupid thief," mumbled Shinichi. "I told you I'd catch you. I'm not letting you go again."
