Hospitalized Heisei Holmes
Late-Night Hospital Visits
Kaito was pouting and he thought he had a right to do so. After all, he'd spent the past two weeks planning this heist, making it absolutely perfect, tailoring it to his tantei-kun. He'd always done that, ever since the miraculous midair walk. Because challenging the mind of Kudou Shinichi was the greatest fun he could imagine. It had been the greatest fun already when it had been the chibi version, but now – now Kaito got to go even more all out. There were whole different variables and options for Kaito to consider in his heists now that Shinichi had more access again and more physical capability. Sure, most of Kaito's heists were still all about Pandora. But every now and again, he needed a break. Something all for himself. Those were the ones he tailored to Shinichi.
Like today's heist. Suzuki had bought some ridiculous, unnecessarily expensive thing to challenge him again. Now the one thing he could always rely on when it came to the Suzukis; where they were, tantei-kun was not far behind. So Kaito spent two weeks planning this to perfection, doing everything that he knew would put Shinichi in awe. A duel of wits was one thing, but the real goal was always to make Shinichi's eyes sparkle. When even the Great Detective put his deductions away to simply be in awe about the magic performed in front of him. That, oh, that was the best thing Kaito could imagine. That made his heart race more than any adrenaline rush.
That was what Kaito was supposed to see tonight, because he had gone all out. And his most important audience member hadn't shown up. No Shinichi. Nowhere in sight. Not even running late. The heist came to an end and Kaito stood all alone on the roof, waiting as long as he could, until Nakamori-keibu and his team came running after him and he had to get away.
He landed in the crowd, changed into his civilian clothes, perfectly blending in with his fans. His eyes scanned the crowd, looking for someone specific. Because while tantei-kun hadn't shown up, he had indeed spotted his biggest fan. Where she was, Shinichi should also be. Ah. There she was.
With a sly smirk did Kaito dodge people and make his way over to the two girls. He stood with his back facing them, close enough so he could hear what Sonoko and Ran were talking about.
"Oh, KID-sama was amazing, as always!" exclaimed Sonoko excitedly.
Kaito relished the praise, but that wasn't why he had come here. He noticed in Ran's stance and the pinch on her face that he saw through the reflection in the window-front he was facing that something was troubling her. She wasn't annoyed, which would be so much better, because annoyed meant that Shinichi had messed up somehow, gotten caught up in a murder case that made him miss this. Worried however, worried was never a good sign. Kaito's stomach knotted.
"Oi, stop worrying about the detective geek," chided Sonoko, lightly slapping Ran's upper arm. "He's fine. I mean, sure, he got stabbed, but he's in the hospital, no longer actively bleeding out. He's taken care of. All he needs now is rest and you can't do anything about that. That's why you're here. Because you can not sit at his bedside twenty-four hours."
"I know," Ran heaved a sigh and closed her eyes for a moment. "He's a grown-up. He has to learn to take care of himself and bear the consequences of his own recklessness. It's not that."
"Not?" Sonoko frowned at Ran, asking the question Kaito wanted to ask too.
Though his mind was still reeling from the fact that Shinichi had been stabbed and was in the hospital. Had been bleeding out at one point. The poker-face had never been harder to keep up.
"Well, maybe a bit," admitted Ran. "But it's also... When we left the hospital this afternoon, he was trying so hard to tag along with us. He's been looking forward to the heist all week, Sonoko. I'm... I'm sad for him, because he missed it. Ever since... Ever since he returned from that big case, he's been so weighed down. His... eyes drift off so often, filling with so much sadness. Whatever he's seen during those past two years, it left its scars on him. But KID-san's heists?"
She paused and smiled, and Kaito felt his heart skip a confused beat. "That's the few times he seems truly happy. Like he can forget whatever happened during that case. Haven't you noticed?"
"I mean, yeah, I guess," Sonoko looked thoughtful. "He's been really excited about the heists and throwing himself into it. The newspapers have been calling him 'the KID Killer's senpai'. Which... It's weird, isn't it? I mean, he's never cared about thieves before. It's always been murder mysteries with that guy, he used to scoff at petty theft and all that..."
Okay, this started to be a bit too much for Kaito. It felt... invasive. And Kaito, who had never shied away from surveillance, actually felt wrong for listening in. Because he was learning things about Shinichi that he shouldn't learn from a third party. Their relationship had long since been one of mutual trust, as strange as it seemed. For a long time now, Kaito had been learning everything from the source himself. Their conversations on rooftops and more so whenever they would actually work together, side by side. He wanted to hear those things from Shinichi himself.
/break\
It only took him a quick lift from Ran – he put the wallet back after, but he needed to find a clue as to what hospital Shinichi was staying in and she still had a recipe for a coffee from the hospital's cafeteria in her wallet – and he knew his next destination. Getting into the hospital was easy enough pretending to be a visitor. The irony considering he technically was a visitor. But Kuroba Kaito couldn't just waltz into Shinichi's hospital room. So he snuck in and then he pretended to be a nurse to get to Shinichi's room. The problem was that the Great Detective wasn't alone; the professor and the scary little nee-san were in there, visiting him.
"Just here to change your bandages," Kaito smiled brightly and went about it.
For now, he just wanted to check Shinichi's condition. The detective laid flat, only getting into a sitting position with some help from Agasa and Kaito, wincing the entire time. Slowly did he unbutton his shirt. The professor excused himself to get a coffee, but the little nee-san didn't leave. She unfolded a magazine, but Kaito could feel her eyes on him, watching like a hawk. Kaito did his best not to blush as he had Shinichi shirtless in front of him. With gentle fingers did he unwrap the bandage that was around Shinichi's chest, every now and again would his finger-tips brush over soft skin. Stab-wounds on the lower abdomen, multiple ones all closely nestled together though. Kaito glared at the injuries before he wrapped new layers of bandages around Shinichi's chest.
"There you go. Excuse the intrusion," Kaito bowed a little and left.
Not without planting a bug though. He headed back to the waiting area downstairs, using his earbud to listen in and make sure that Shinichi's two visitors would be gone before he went back.
"Stop pouting, Kudou," Haibara sounded exasperated. "You're still a child, even if you're not Edogawa anymore, are you? They take away your favorite toy and you pout."
"Ai-kun, he just got stabbed, be more forgiving," requested Agasa softly.
"Oh, this isn't about him getting stabbed. He already moved on from that. He's pouting because he couldn't chase his moonlight obsession tonight," Haibara sounded smug.
"I'm not obsessed with KID," declared Shinichi frustrated. "I'm a detective. I'm trying to catch him. I can't arrest him if I'm bound to a hospital bed."
"Then you shouldn't have let yourself get stabbed by the murderer," said Haibara unimpressed.
Grumbling followed that was too low for Kaito to hear, but he could just picture Shinichi's annoyed little glare. The thought made him smile. Then, finally, the rustling of clothes and moving of chairs.
"You should rest. Will you be alright alone?" asked Agasa concerned.
"I didn't need everyone to take... shifts... visiting me. I am perfectly fine on my own."
"Ah. I have a feeling you have one more visitor yet to come," noted Haibara cryptically.
"But visiting hours are about to end?" Agasa sounded confused by her.
Kaito could hear the girl chuckle and then the two finally left the room, so Kaito made his way outside. He made his way onto the roof, changing into his KID costume and then letting himself down the side of the building with a grappling hook until he reached Shinichi's window.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk, tantei-kun. It is very rude not to come when invited by someone."
Shinichi turned to look at Kaito and he tried to look nonplussed, but Kaito could see the excitement behind those blue eyes. The detective tried to sit up, but went down with a soft groan. Furrowing his brows, Kaito hopped down from the windowsill and walked over to sit down on the bed.
"Hey," whispered Kaito warmly. "Don't strain yourself, Great Detective. I hear you need rest."
"Why did you come back?" asked Shinichi confused. "Oh, don't look at me like that. I might be on morphine but I can still tell when a sneaky thief is pretending to be a nurse. Also someone had changed my bandages not even an hour before that... So, what's with the second visit?"
After a moment, Kaito decided to push. "Wait, why did you let me change your bandages then?"
There was a cute blush lighting up Shinichi's cheeks. "I figured you came because you were worried and wanted to see for yourself how bad the injuries are. Me telling you 'I'm fine' wouldn't suffice."
"Because you're a reckless brat who plays down his own injuries," Kaito huffed irritated.
To his surprise did Shinichi just chuckle softly. "You sound like Ran and Haibara..."
"Yes, well, the people who care about you are very fed-up about your reckless behavior."
"You care about me, mh?" Shinichi looked up at him in a nearly coy manner.
Reaching out, Kaito rested a hand on Shinichi's injury, gently and carefully so. "Of course I do, stupid detective. You're very dear to me. Why do you think I keep dropping by to save your life? You... can't just endanger yourself like that while I'm not there to save you."
"I don't... need a knight in white armor," argued Shinichi, staring at the hand but not removing it from his body. "Look at me, I survived all on my own. I... I can protect myself."
The look Kaito gave him was only mildly disbelieving. "I... know you can fight and stand your own. But the level of ridiculous stunts you pull. Remember when you and the kids just walked into an ominous mansion with a murderer after finding a body? Oh, or that time a terrorist just threw you out of an airship because you couldn't behave yourself for five minutes! Or-"
"Okay, okay, I get it," Shinichi glared, cheeks dark-red. "Sometimes... help is nice. ...Your help."
Biting his lower lip, Kaito looked at his detective. On impulse did he lean down to peck Shinichi's red cheek. Cerulean eyes stared at him in surprise and Kaito tensed, thinking he overstepped. The next moment, Shinichi grabbed him by the jacket and pulled him into a quick but deep kiss.
"Thank you for... checking on me," whispered Shinichi. "I'm sorry I missed your heist."
"You can make it up to me on the next heist," assured Kaito with a pleased smirk.
