Conan's Fake Girlfriend

(And Real Phantom Stalker)

Retrospectively, Conan should have gotten more suspicious when he couldn't find his phone during a heist. Alas, he was much too distracted chasing after the exasperating thief. Especially with his two phones, it happened that he misplaced them, or one. And by the time they got home again, he found his phone in a different pocket than he had looked earlier, so he didn't think much of it.

Until his phone buzzed and he got a text from a number he didn't know – but his phone seemed to know. A name flared up that he had never heard before. Tsukino Guinevere. Frowning curiously, Conan put his manga down and instead reached for the phone to see.

You should be more careful with your possessions. There are many shady figures who might try to steal them and not every thief returns what they steal ;D

Shinichi read the text three times, the expression on his face shifting into one of irritated annoyance. Part of him wanted to block the number right away, but the bigger part of him was intrigued. His fingers itching as he considered what to type back. What did one reply when their internationally wanted criminal of a rival stole their phone and started randomly texting them...?

What are you doing, stupid thief? There. That sounded good, didn't it?

Texting my favorite critic and feeling very unappreciated right now :'(

With an exasperated sigh did Shinichi roll his eyes and put the phone down next to himself. Seriously, what was happening here? Then again, why was he surprised. This was KID, after all.

I suspect that tracing this number will be pointless, texted Shinichi after another moment.

Obviously, tantei-kun. Where'd be the fun in that for either of us? A Great Detective as yourself should not just trace a number and end the game. No mystery, no fun, mh?

Damn that thief for knowing him so well. This would indeed not be fun for Shinichi at all.

Okay. What's the purpose of this then, thief? Conan narrowed his eyes at the phone.

It took a bit for KID to type out his reply. I dunno. Open line of communication.

What for? Conan raised one unimpressed eyebrow at his phone.

So I won't have to corner you in a dark alley and abduct you when I need your help.

Conan blinked repeatedly, shaking his head. If you ever abduct me again, you will not survive.

HENCE THE PHONE! No more abduction! Open communication!

Shaking his head, he took the phone one last time. I'm going to bed. Good night.

Aw. Unexpectedly sweet of you, Great Detective! Sweet dreams [heart]

Shinichi flushed and put his phone away for just a moment, before grabbing it again. The name. It'd keep him awake all night if he didn't look it up. The Tsukino was very on the nose, but he didn't quite know about the name Guinevere. It was the name of the queen of Camelot, he knew that, but he didn't quite see a connection there. Opening a name site, he looked the name up.

"Guinevere, from the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar meaning 'white phantom'," Conan read to himself.

He snorted and shook his head. The white phantom of the moon, huh? Not that he was someone with any room to judge others on their fake identities, all things considered. But still...

"Ne, ne, who is Conan-kun texting with?" asked Ayumi curiously.

Shinichi startled and looked at her, right next to his face. Genta and Mitsuhiko stood behind him, also trying to peek at his phone. Haibara smirked at him from across the table. The Detective Boys were at the professor's and while the kids were talking about something, Shinichi had gotten distracted by a more interesting conversation. KID had been complaining about Hakuba all day long and described the prank he'd pulled on the half-British detective. It seemed that Shinichi really was KID's favorite critic, because KID had never bothered to track him down just to prank him...

"Who is Tsukino Gu... Guni...?" Genta frowned.

"Guinevere," offered Haibara, who didn't even sit close to Conan.

"How do you...?" Shinichi narrowed his eyes at her.

"You've been texting with this person all week!" declared Ayumi.

"Yes! You have never been on your phone this much during recess," added Mitsuhiko.

"Guinevere is a girl's name," tagged Haibara on, smirking at Conan.

"O—Oh," Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta all gasped and stared at each other.

Oh no. No. Haibara was evil. Truly, genuinely evil. He glared at her with murderous intend.

"What's going on in here?" Agasa looked curious as he entered the room with snacks.

"Conan-kun has a girlfriend!" exclaimed Ayumi excitedly.

Rationally speaking, Shinichi had known this day would come. Inevitably, someone was going to see him text KID, considering just how often he was texting the thief nowadays. It had been a slow start. Awkward. He'd gotten a cheerful good morning, tantei-kun! on day two and it turned mostly into small-talk. The weather, what murder case Shinichi had stumbled into that day. The awkwardness faded within days and it became part of Shinichi's routine to wish the thief a good morning and a good night, to have someone to talk to about his day. Really talk to. No need to put it all through a child-filter to sell the facade of Conan. KID knew he was Shinichi, he got to just talk clearly, about the things that were on his mind. The thief was surprisingly easy to talk to, all sassy jokes aside; if he wanted to, he could be very sincere and genuine.

"It's none of any of your business," grunted Conan, trying not to be flustered.

Though he had expected this, he hadn't exactly come up with a cover story yet... So now, the kids were just giggling like they had discovered some great secret, while Haibara continued smirking.

You don't have the need to steal a detective right now, do you? Conan typed bored.

Very busy doing important thief-things. A pause. Why? You in trouble, tantei-kun?

Not trouble, exactly. Stuck going shopping with Ran and Sonoko. Kill me now.

YOU should NEVER make jokes about that! Shinichi could imagine the mock-scandalized look on KID's face as he'd say that and the thought made him smile a little.

"The pipsqueak's surprisingly docile today," noted Sonoko suspiciously.

"Yes, he is texting with Gwen-chan," replied Ran, sounding happy about this.

"Wha—at. Don't tell me he got a girlfriend?" Sonoko looked offended as she pointed at Conan.

"Not a girlfriend," Conan grumbled and pocketed his phone for now. "Gwen-chan is a friend from back home. We lost touch when I moved her, but she was recently allowed her first phone! So we have been texting and there is so much to catch up on!"

He talked extra sweet and cheerful, smiling brightly at the two girls. It was as good a cover story as any, really. The phone in his pocket buzzed and he reached for it to check what KID had to say.

"He absolutely has a crush," whispered Ran, not quiet enough that Conan couldn't hear. "He spends so much time on his phone now! Even during cases. You know how hard it is to tear him away from those. And he has this very special little smile for when he gets a text from Gwen-chan."

I bought that book you recommended last week! It's quite interesting, for a mystery :P

The text only half-registered on Conan's mind because Ran's words rang so much louder. He... was spending a lot of time texting with KID, wasn't he? Scrolling up, he checked to see. And not a day went by without multiple texts between the two of them. But he surely didn't have a special smile for when he was texting KID. That was preposterous. Ridiculous. Impossible.

I tried the strawberry cream cake that you recommended. It's far too sweet. But I can see why YOU would like it. I suspect your KID activities are the only reason you can keep your figure, you candy-addicted glutton.

Conan looked up from his phone and caught his own image in the window. There was a soft smile on his lips, it was replaced with a startled expression as he saw it, because he... had never seen such a soft look on his own face. Ran's words from two weeks ago came to his mind again. How she was sure that he had a crush on 'Gwen-chan' because of the way he smiled. Seeing that look... he had to admit that it could only be described as smitten. He was... smitten... with Kaitou KID. That was awful. That couldn't happen. He was a detective, he couldn't have a crush on a thief.

Rude, tantei-kun :/ There was a beat before another text came. I WAS considering bringing you a piece of lemon pie, since you like that, but rude detectives get NOTHING

No, this wasn't... They had long since surpassed rivalry texting, had they? They'd slipped into friendly banter all too quickly, then genuine bonding. They talked about movies and manga they liked, about their days – even KID, though not slipping in concrete details about his life, talked about what he had done with his friends or how much his mother annoyed him (another bonding point for them, though they both loved their mothers). Whenever a heist came up – three had passed since Shinichi got KID's number – they would also talk about that. Shinichi would complain about how silly the riddle was, KID would complain about the inspector. They'd chat until shortly before the announced time. It became harder and harder to tear himself away from his phone.

Maybe he needed a break. But he hated the thought of not talking to KID, which in itself was concerning. He liked talking to KID, some days it was the highlight of his day.

Great Detective? Shinichi blinked to look at the text from KID. I was just joking you know

Huh. KID must have seen that Conan read the message, since he still had the chat open. Had he really answered so quickly in the past weeks that a delay of a couple minutes after reading made KID nervous...? And was KID so eager for their conversations too that he awaited his answers...?

If I ever get my body back, will you meet me face to face? Not as Conan and KID?

Shinichi didn't even know why he said it, or what it meant. Was he asking KID for a date? For a friendship? A real one? Was he asking KID to give up his secret...? He frowned irritated.

I'm looking forward to it, tantei-kun [heart-emoji]

Shinichi didn't know what to do with that, but it made his heart race.
