Their Fathers' Legacy

Polyshipping Week 2022

Yuusaku smiled softly as he unfolded the newspaper to see his son's smiling face, Kaitou KID in the background. He liked to keep track of his son through the newspaper. There was an album with clippings of articles about Edogawa Conan the KID Killer. Nowadays, Yuusaku finally got to cut out pictures of Shinichi again. Yet the boy still chased after KID.

"Like father, like son," chimed Yukiko with a small smile.

She wrapped her arms around her husband's neck from behind, resting her chin on top of his head, her eyes also on the newspaper. Yuusaku chuckled at that, smirking to himself.

"The mystery of a phantom thief is just too tempting," noted Yuusaku. "But I don't think..."

"Honey, I know that smile. That's not the smile of a detective chasing a criminal. That's the smile of a Kudou chasing his own personal phantom thief," countered Yukiko gently.

"This is a bad idea. It's in fact an awful idea. Let's just cancel it."

Shinichi was pacing their kitchen. Which was mildly distracting for Kaito, who was in the middle of trying to finish dinner. As a teen, he used to eat with the Nakamoris most of the time, but he had also learned how to cook from Aoko so he could take care of himself. Which paid off after he had moved in with his boyfriend, because Kudou Shinichi could not take care of himself if his life depended on it – very literally so, the guy got himself poisoned before! Had to spend two years as a child because of that. And effectively robbed Kaito of a whole year with Shinichi!

"Right, yes. Let's call our parents half an hour before they're due to cancel," Kaito grunted.

"...You're not taking me seriously," complained Shinichi. "We can fake an emergency. Like, a case."

"A case is not an emergency. I know why I kept you at home all day today, so you would not run into any cases," Kaito lifted his head to stare pointedly at his boyfriend. "It's time. We have been living together for three months now and I haven't even met your parents yet."

"That is my self-preservation kicking in," muttered Shinichi with a pout.

"Well, that's a lie, my lovely detective," chimed Kaito, smirking as he leaned in to kiss Shinichi's cheek. "You have no self-preservation skills at all, not even a speck!"

That earned him a glare from Shinichi, but before the detective could argue with him did the doorbell ring. Unwillingly did Shinichi go to open the door. Moments later and Kaito could hear his mom's voice, laughter and conversation. More than two people though. Time to meet the future in-laws. Kaito was set on leaving an impeccable first impression. He smiled brightly.

"Oh, it is so good to see you again, Chikage-chan, it's been far too long."

"I agree, but it just seems like we're never in Japan at the same time," Kaito's mom laughed.

Kaito, however, frowned. What was going on? Shinichi was the first one to enter the kitchen, confusion written all over his face too as he came followed by their parents.

"Mom," Kaito smiled as he pulled Chikage into a hug, his eyes on the Kudous. "Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Kuroba Kaito, your son's, uh, boyfriend."

Though they didn't hide their relationship at all, Kaito couldn't help but blush as he so bluntly admitted to it in front of Shinichi's parents. The next moment, he was swept into a hug by Yukiko.

"Oh, Kai-chan, you are so big!" exclaimed Yukiko pleased. "My, and as handsome as your father."

"I'm confused," admitted Shinichi. "How do you guys know each other?"

Yuusaku flushed and scratched his cheek as he sat down at the set table, followed by the women. Kaito and Shinichi exchanged another confused look at that, though they also sat down.

"I learned magic from your father, for a role," explained Yukiko with a smile. "That's how we met Toichi for the first time. But... your fathers have their own... night-time history."

Both Kaito and Shinichi tensed at that and turned to look at each other. Yuusaku had named Kaitou KID, it was public knowledge that the author had aided in the KID chase. However, what Yukiko said implied that both Kudous knew Toichi had been Kaitou KID. Kaito turned toward his mom.

"You didn't have to phrase it in such a dirty manner, Yukiko-chan!" chided Chikage. "You'll fluster the boys! You should ease them into this, not be so blunt."

"...I can't decide which one is worse," mused Kaito with a frown. "The implication that my father was Kaitou KID from Yukiko-san, or that mom just implied that my dad and your dad..."

"Whichever it is, both are true," stated Yuusaku with a playful smile.

Shinichi heaved a sigh and covered his eyes with one hand, massaging his temples. "What."

"You're not original, going out there into the night to chase a white-clad, mesmerizing thief and then to fall in love with him, Shinichi," replied Yuusaku, the smile turning softer. "Kaitou KID was... a force to be reckoned with. His riddles challenged and inspired me. Our chase was..."

He reached up to cover half his mouth with a hand, hiding the growing smile on his face. He squinted, because smiling was not the only reaction he had to the memory of Toichi. Chikage reached out to squeeze his shoulder, a pained look on her own face. Kaito made a confused noise.

"Yuusaku figured out your father's identity. There are not that many Japanese magicians with that level of skill," supplied Chikage. "One day, he stood in front of our door, flustered. Not to arrest Toichi, but to ask him out on a date. I... admit, it took me a little getting used to, but it was never a secret, they never sneaked around. All I wanted was for Toichi to be happy and... Yuusaku made him as happy as I did. Your father... loved Yuusaku."

Now, Shinichi's eyes wandered toward his own mother for an answer. "Oh no, our relationship has always been accepting of thirds. While your father was dating Toichi, I was dating Sharon."

At those words, Shinichi simply looked miserable, shaking his head. "I don't know what to say."

"We knew the general public would not approve so we always hid it and never met with both our families," continued Yuusaku, his voice more pained. "I'm... glad that the two of you don't let the public's opinion dictate your relationship. I know there is still enough judgment on relationships between two men, even without the layers of our polyamorous entanglement."

There was genuine regret on Yuusaku's face and it sobered both Kaito and Shinichi up. Regret for the time he had missed with Toichi. Both Kaito and Shinichi reached for each other in instinct, holding hands. They weren't going to lose any time that they could have with each other.

~*~ The End ~*~

Author's note: It is Polyshipping Week! But I didn't want to sit out my Magic Mondays, so I figured I'd work the prompts into DCMK ships. And ever since I rewatched Shinichi's Childhood Adventures, I've been low-key obsessed with the idea of the Kudous and the Kurobas having kind of an open relationship arrangement because Yukiko 100% knows that Toichi and Yuusaku are doing it ;D
