Chapter 3
Max Print - 18
I rolled out of bed, grumbling about how early I have to get up. I glanced at my dirty, cracked mirror, and my brown eyes glared right back. I threw on some clothes and tried to push open my door. The stupid thing continues to get stuck at the bottom. I should take a knife and shave it down a bit, but I don't think anyone would let me have a knife.
Just as I pried my door open, I heard my younger cousin Jennifer come into the house. I shut my door and slumped on my bed again. I hate Jennifer. She always comes over to the house and torments me while she hangs out with John. I don't understand why, because she's twelve and my brother is sixteen.
I guess I will wait in my room before the reaping. I don't care if I get reaped, but I guess I will miss my grandparents and my mom and my aunt and uncle Sarah and Jerry. But if it weren't for them I would have nothing. My dad died last year to someone who hasn't been brought in. I am constantly brooding over who it was, and when I find out she will be punished. All of my cousins I dislike, they are either very rude or just annoying. I have no real connection to any of them, and my brother John just acts up to me. Maybe going into the arena would just be a relief.
I can hear Jennifer coming up the stairs, so I lock my door and put my chair in front of it. I would rather not deal with her right now.
Now, all I can do is wait for the reaping.
Jennifer Harp - 12
I knocked on Max's door, listening to see if there was a response. When I heard nothing, I sighed a breath of relief and pushed the door open. When I felt resistance, I saw the chair leaning against the door through the crack of the door. I shoved the wood forward and walked into his room. I immediately saw him laying on his bed, his head turned away and his short, brown hair was tousled and not brushed.
"Go away," Max said, hard.
"Sorry," I responded sarcastically. "I'll just be on my way." Max lifted his head and glared at me, and I felt scared. I would go crying to Mom and Dad, but what was I going to say, 'Max looked at me - you should ground him!' They would look at me like I was just causing trouble like usual. So, I slid out of his room and raced down the stairs. As I walked into their small kitchen, I heard Auntie and Grandma talking about Max.
"You know, he was a sweet little kid once." Auntie Valerie was saying. "He just wanted acceptance."
"I know," Grandma said. "But what happened to him?" She asked.
"He was constantly being teased, but no fault of his own. People in school, his cousins, especially little Jennifer, everyone." Auntie said, sad. I cleared my throat, and Auntie and Grandma turned around.
"Hello baby, what can we help you with?" Grandma asked, her mood changing.
"Where's Anna?" I demanded. Auntie Valerie smiled.
"I'm sure she's around, sweetie." She said. "You love that girl, don't you."
"Well, she's my sister, and I don't know, let's just say I have a thing with three-year-olds." I flicked my light brown hair and pranced out of the kitchen. I could see the two of them smiling.
"Oh, Jen?" Auntie called. "We need to get ready to go to the reaping."
"Right." I paused, then turned around. "Let me get my dress! I'll be back in a second!"
Max Print
We were all standing in our groups by age, and our escort 'Over-Sparkly', as I like to call her, was standing at the microphone in between the two bowls of names.
"Welcome to the Reaping everyone!" She put on a ludicrous fake smile to match her outfit, which was a shimmering gold sequin dress with an oversized blonde wig. "Here we have a Capitol message just for all of you!" She gestured behind her. "Years ago, when the Dark Days were over…" I tuned the rest of her speaking out. I looked around until I saw Jennifer, and when I met her gaze, I gave her a death stare. She looked down almost immediately, and this gave me pleasure. She is such a pest.
Suddenly, her message was over. "Well, now let's get to the drawing!" She said excitedly. "Ladies first!" She reached in with a perfectly manicured hand and pulled out a small white slip.
"Jennifer Harp!"
Jennifer Harp
No. No, no, no! This cannot be happening! I cannot be going into… into… the Hunger Games! Me! In the Hunger Games! This is a dream, a false reality. It can't be true, right? Right?
"Jennifer Harp!" The escort called again. So, it was true. I burst into tears, and two peacekeepers came and brought me up to the stage. I could see my whole family crying out too, and that made me cry harder.
"It's okay, sweetie." The escort said gently, even with a fake smile too. She straightened up and stuck her hand in the male bowl. "Max Print!" She called out. No. Just no. I can't do this anyway, but with Max there? I stand no chance. He came up the stage, ignoring our family, and gives me a deep glare. I knew that he would give me payback for all of the annoyance that I have caused him.
Now I am truly scared. Scared of my own cousin. It's time to go.
The next chapter is the D5 reaping.
