Summary: Kaito went all out for their fourth anniversary, planning the most amazing heist. And Shinichi missed it. He also forgot. It was weird for a thief to celebrate the day he first met a detective, right? Or was there anything more to it, that Shinichi was missing?

Four For Four

Happy Anniversary, Thief and Detective!

Shinichi was tired and sore. He hadn't slept at all last night, him and Heiji only made it home at about seven AM. So he wasn't entirely thrilled to find the party going on in his kitchen. Kazuha, Sera, Sonoko and Ran were having brunch, chatting loudly. He truly wished the Osakans would feel less at home at the Kudou Manor whenever they came over, but then Ran also felt very at home here and had no qualms inviting herself in. For now, Shinichi zombie-walked past the four to get himself a glass of water for his aspirin. His head was killing him and he knew it was because he hadn't drunk enough water yesterday, not eaten enough, and also not slept enough.

"You look awful, Shinichi," commented Sonoko in a judgmental voice.

"Thank you, Sonoko, exactly what I needed. Your expert input on my appearance."

"Did you sleep at all, Shinichi?" asked Ran concerned, searching his face.

"You and Heiji weren't here when I got here after the heist," tagged Kazuha on. "He's still asleep."

"...Heist?" echoed Shinichi, brain still sluggish, before his eyes widened. "Heist."

There'd been a KID heist yesterday! That was yesterday? How was that possible, it was on April first, right? Had that been yesterday? Damn it. Him and Hattori had been working this case for the past two days then. And he'd been as long without sleep too. He needed coffee.

"You missed what might have been the most impressive KID heist ever," confirmed Sera. "He went all out, you know? Three appearances, at three different locations. Chasing the task-force through half the town, really. It took hours but it was amazing. A real challenge."

"Wish I could have been there," Shinichi sighed as he finally got a cup of coffee.

"It started out at the historical site in Ekoda, the clock tower," started Sonoko, gesturing in excitement. "He put on a show there, not stealing anything, just putting a code on the clock's face that led to the next destination. The night was basically a scavenger hunt of riddles and clues that led to the final destination."

"The second stop was the Haido City Hotel's roof-top, where the next clue was," continued Kazuha. "Which finally revealed what he wanted to steal and where. An Imperial Easter Egg, loaned to Beika Museum from Russia right now."

Perhaps it was Shinichi's brain that was still very mushy from the past two days (two days!), but something about that sounded strangely familiar. All of this. A clock tower in Ekoda, with a riddle on its clock. The roof-top of the Haido City Hotel, with KID. Beika Museum. An Imperial Easter Egg, stolen by KID. His mind supplied images, memories. Sitting in a helicopter, outsmarting a brilliant thief whose name he hadn't known back then, but now it seemed so obvious that it must have been KID. Shooting fireworks off Haido City Hotel's roof-top after rushing there from the Beika Museum, how overwhelming it had been to see KID for the first time. But there was... KID had grinned and disappeared in a flash after announcing it all to be just a joke – April's Fool.

"Today's date..." whispered Shinichi slowly, eyebrows furrowed.

"It's April second," replied Ran, one eyebrow raised.

Yesterday was indeed April first. April's Fool. And KID had put on a show like that? That led them from the first place they had faced off to the location they had first actually met, actually talked. And the Easter Egg too, it also held significance, to them. That was when KID had learned Shinichi's secret, when he had first posed as Shinichi and not for his personal gain but solely to protect Shinichi. These moments, these locations, had been carefully chosen and the date was not a coincident either, was it? Kaitou KID had organized an exciting scavenger hunt... for their anniversary. Why would the thief do that? What kind of lunatic celebrated the day they met their rival? But then again, Kaitou KID was kind of a lunatic, wasn't he?

"I'm... sad I missed it," whispered Shinichi after a moment.

"I'm just not entirely sure why he'd do all of this," muttered Shinichi as he had a newspaper unfolded in front of himself, reading through the heist. "I suppose it is on brand for KID."

"How is that on brand, Kudou?" Hattori grunted, putting a hand down right in front of Shinichi. "What, ya think that Nakamori-keibu got a nice lil anniversary heist? And Hakuba?"

Shinichi looked up at Hattori, blinking repeatedly. Then, he frowned. He supposed that was... an argument. But why would KID go this all out for Shinichi, specifically...?

"Oi, you're not serious, are ya?" Hattori stared at him a little disturbed. "The guy's so obviously in love with ya. How have yer not caught on with that? The way he singles ya out, yer lil meet-ups on root-tops that neither me nor Sera-chan or even Hakuba are. Ya have chats with that thief. Chats! Or work together for stuff. He held a big 'welcome back' heist for yer return, Kudou."

There were no arguments in Shinichi's head to dispute that. This was... true. KID had confirmed to him before that he had planned entire heists explicitly for him. But that wasn't romantic, was it? Then again, celebrating an anniversary... felt like something two people in a relationship would do. All their chatter, their banter, every time they had teamed up, every time seeing KID had made his own heart race. Shinichi's eyes widened as more and more evidence fell into place.

"He... is in love with me," whispered Shinichi, covering his mouth. "And I'm in love with him."

Kaito was only pouting a little bit. Yes, he had gone out of his way to make their anniversary special, since this was the first time Shinichi was full-sized during it. And Shinichi had missed it. The day after, Kaito had checked, just to find Shinichi deep asleep at three PM, which was rare. He listened in on the conversations his house-guest had and learned that Shinichi had spent the past two days solving a very gruesome abduction and murder case with Hattori, only getting home in the early morning hours after the heist. The case had started the day before their anniversary and a little girl had been abducted after the first murder, so Kaito definitely couldn't blame Shinichi for saving a child and solving a murder and not being able to make it. Still, he was pouting. It could have been so romantic, so perfect. He'd wanted to actually confess to Shinichi afterward...

"Did you read the news about KID?" asked Aoko annoyed. "He chases my father around through town, making a fool of him and now he announces another heist? Just three days after!"

Say what now? Kaito blinked slowly and turned toward his best friend. He snatched away her newspaper, his eyes wide as he saw the large heist announcement on the first page. Hakuba stepped up to him after watching his reaction closely. Damn it, poker-face. But still, who was so cheeky to impersonate him this shortly after an actual heist? He hated imposters. They always were up to no good and often times, it ended with a murder. The note was... surprisingly complex, for an imposter.

"I've already closely examined the note," announced Hakuba. "It's peculiar."

"What? What is?" Kaito frowned, not looking up from his newspaper.

"That KID would challenge Kudou-kun so openly," stated Hakuba dryly.

What? Kaito tensed and reread the note. Oh no. There was a second layer to the code. Challenging Kudou Shinichi directly. An imposter who wanted his tantei-kun? Well, no. We couldn't have that. It might end with an injured or worse yet dead Shinichi. Was someone using KID's good name to lure Shinichi into a trap? Time to pay his beloved detective a personal visit to make sure Shinichi would stay very far away from this heist. Just to be on the safe side; Shinichi had this particularly bad luck and this tendency to get himself hurt. And then he'd see what to do about the heist.

"Oi... Kudou... Come over here, I think I found a... clue."

Well, Hattori was acting particularly weird. Kaito had gone to the Kudou Manor, spied for a little bit to then learn from Hattori and Tooyama that Kudou was apparently out on a case, he seemed to not have even seen the newspaper announcement. Very good. So Kaito snuck into the manor, changed into his Shinichi disguise – this time with Shinichi's actual clothes – and told the two that he had wrapped up the case early, discovered the challenge in the note and planned on heading to the heist.

"What is it, Hattori?" asked Kaito as he approached Shinichi's friend.

Hattori offered him a KID card. It was good, a really well-made copy of Kaito's own cards. Only one detail was off and it was such a particular one that it gave him pause. The smiley was wearing a bow-tie. Strange. Kaito frowned. The first thing that came to mind when thinking of bow-ties was his precious shrunken detective. But before he had a chance to actually read the card much...

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's show time!"

Kaito's head snapped up as he saw Kaitou KID appear. The costume was incredibly well-made. So close to the original, even in the details fakes usually got wrong. Kaito and Hattori stepped closer while 'KID' performed a relatively basic trick (but looked surprisingly proud as he managed to). Shaking his head, Kaito focused on tracking the thief. His movements, where he disappeared to. Kaito, having been on the other end of this, knew what to look for, knew what routes made the most sense. So it was pretty easy to follow, even after 'KID' disappeared in a puff of pink smoke – even Kaito's smoke-bombs were cloned on point! At this point, Kaito was so impressed that he really just wanted to corner the imposter to learn who and why.

The other was quite elusive and Kaito found himself challenged by the riddle given on the card that Hattori had found, before he finally figured it out and managed to corner the fake KID on the roof-top of the nearby castle, just the two of them. Even the fake's stance was a pretty good mirror.

"Heh, you got me earlier than I thought you will," commented the other thief, an arrogant but pleased look on his face as he turned toward Kaito. "You make a decent detective, sneak thief."

Kaito froze and his eyes widened. That arrogant smile. He knew it. That face, even behind the monocle and beneath the top-hat. He recognized it. But that was impossible, right?

"Why did you challenge me? You're not KID," Kaito kept the Shinichi facade going.

The other chuckled, scratching his cheek. "It's been brought to my attention that the way you went overboard on your last heist might have been... because you have... feelings for me. I was honestly already feeling bad enough about missing the heist even so. But that you... did all of this for me..."

So it really was his Great Detective. Wearing a surprisingly on-point KID costume. Just having pulled off a heist. No wait. Not just any heist. He hadn't been paying attention to the details, he was so focused on his worries for Shinichi's safety, but this location was where Kaito had held his great heist to celebrate Shinichi's return to his real body, shooting off fire-works from this very castle!

"This... is where Kaitou KID and Kudou Shinichi first met face to real face," stated Kaito.

"It is," confirmed Shinichi, slowly taking off the monocle and pocketing it. "It's our fourth anniversary and since you only covered three mile-stones in your heist... I thought I'd take a fourth and... I'm sorry I missed our anniversary and the apparently amazing heist you planned."

"This is amazing," whispered Kaito in awe. "Wait. You... Oh, that's why Hattori-kun was being so weird toward me, because he knew that I'm you and that you're currently KID."

"He's really bad with secrets," Shinichi heaved a sigh. "So... did you have fun?"

"Kind of," admitted Kaito, a grin slowly forming on his face. "You... stole something..."

"Borrowed," Shinichi pouted. "And... actually, since I would not break the law, it's a... loan. I asked Sonoko for a favor and she agreed to loan me one of the more expensive jewels she owns. All of this was instigated by me, nothing has been stolen, no place has been broken into."

"Aw, you take the fun out of being KID even," Kaito pouted, but he couldn't stop smiling.

Shinichi had done all of this and for him. His heart was racing in excitement and all he wanted to do was to swoop his Great Detective off his feet and kiss him. Shinichi was walking toward him with slow steps, the cape billowing behind him. Now that Kaito knew this wasn't a threat to Shinichi, he could take his time to truly look. And oh, oh. Shinichi looked really good in the white get-up, the well-cut suit showing off his curves and the lean lines of his body so well.

"Wait. You were performing magic earlier," Kaito's eyes widened. "Tantei-kun! Magic!"

"I've been attending your heists for four years now. I've... learned a thing or two from deducing how your tricks work. Though I admit, it's actually... harder than anticipated to perform," Shinichi flushed a pretty pink, scratching his neck. "I was a little nervous about failing."

"No, no, you did great," assured Kaito bright-eyed. "It was impressive, for a first timer."

Shinichi seemed genuinely relieved at that as he came to a half just a few steps in front of Kaito. There was still a certain nervousness to his detective, a tenseness of his shoulders. What for...?

"I... Hattori pointed out that your plans, that they were quite... a romantic gesture. And I just told you that I did all of this as a... reply... to your heist plans. But you haven't really said anything. To either of those. Is my... deduction about your... intentions correct?" asked Shinichi, looking at Kaito expectantly and flustered. "And what's your... answer? To this?"

Right. Shinichi had said that, that he'd figured out Kaito did all of that out of romantic intentions. Kaito flushed. In the excitement, he had kind of brushed past that. Wait. Shinichi had done all of this because he had caught on with the romantic intentions of Kaito's last heist? Oh.

"I... Yes," admitted Kaito with flushed cheeks. "I planned this heist so big and to celebrate our special... moments... because I had planned on confessing to you, on the Haido Hotel roof-top, where we first stood face to face. I... have been waiting for this for so long. For you to return back to your body. And since then, I've been trying to figure out how or even when to tell you that... that I'm in love with you, Kudou Shinichi."

"I'm sorry I'm three days late to your confession," Shinichi smiled just a little as he reached out to take Kaito's hand. "But... I love you too, KID. And I've been waiting for this... for years."

"Kaito," whispered Kaito, smiling at Shinichi's confused look. "Kuroba Kaito. That's... my name."

"Kaito," it was a breathy whisper and lost against Kaito's lips.

Kaito wrapped his arms around Shinichi's waist and pulled him into a kiss. Slow and sweet, filled with both their yearning. It was okay that Shinichi was late, because this was quite perfect, really.

~*~ The End ~*~

Author's note: I wanted to do something for their anniversary, but my schedule is already packed enough without the additional fic so I fiiigured since April 4th is only three days after, why not work with it in this Magic Monday... and work the delayed celebration INTO the fic ;D
